A Manhattan culinary excellence without the Manhattan attitude or crowds. Have been twice since it opened. Last night we tried the roasted Monkfish which was cooked to perfection accompanied by two fried oysters. My other half had the duck which was tender and delicious. On past visits I sampled the salmon on potato boxty (Irish pancakes) which was popping with freshness, the venison carpaccio was tender and delightful and the lobster, black pudding and braised pork belly was amazing. We had a wonderful, warm, and friendly experience from the minute we were greeted by the host until we received our check. We started with warm bread and butter which was so delicious. My husband also ordered a whiskey drink. I can't remember specifically what, but considering I'm not to much of a whiskey drinker, this cocktail was on point. I had the pork belly and lobster tail and It was perfect. The glaze over top was my favorite. We will certainly be coming back to Bia. It's a nice change of pace to the area of Rhinebeck. I had been looking forward to the much-anticipated opening of this hidden gem in Rhinebeck, and I certainly was not disappointed when we tried it last Friday night... What an amazing dining experience from start to finish! The salmon appetizer, monkfish, and scallop special were all outstanding in both taste and presentation. If you are just driving through Rhinebeck you could miss Bia, and that would be a shame, because it is a gem. My husband ordered the boneless rib roast, with creamed spinach, Yorkshire pudding, and potatoes. I had the Scottish salmon over broccoli. Everything on our plates was expertly prepared. 2nd time here, this was our 9th wedding anniversary we both chose this as the place we wanted to go.... things did not start off very well our waiter kind of forgot us in a corner table although very pleasant, (thru no fault of their own) a couple came in with children who decided they wanted to start a band with the silverware on the table wait staff promptly moved us to a new table discreetly then things really took off. One of the best meals we have had in a very long time. Very unpretentious chef attentive staff, my wife had an arctic char that was cooked to perfection, also the little beef puff pastry pie, ( mind blowing umami flavor) I had the venison Schnitzel with a classic take on lingonberry Sauce with a hint of grainy mustard, shear perfection I kid you not....for my starter I had a heavenly marriage of the most beautiful baked rye Soda bread gin juniper cure salmon, caviar and baby herbs, shaved radish... dessert?! OMG yes, citron tart macerated berries and cream, my wife had warm almond orange blossom honey pudding, OMG! Lovely Dinner with my sister at Bia last night. Too hot to sit outside in their lovely garden- sitting inside will never disappoint, the space is really beautiful ,very old world european. Onto the dinner started with Venison Carpaccio with truffled ricotta, crispy shallots, english mustard - SO GOOD- Entrees, what to choose - she had the Pork Belly Confit and butter poached Lobster- I had one of the specials of the evening , Seared Sea Scallops with a savory Spinach Tart, yum ! Scrumptious homemade breads and dessert was Apple Tart Tatin with homemade olorosa sherry ice cream Attentive and friendly service . The portion we received was embarrassing. We ordered the lamb which arrived in two miniscule pieces maybe 1-inch by 3-4 inch. For something like $28!!!! It was also absolutely freezing INSIDE. I appreciate times are tough and they are doing everything possible to accommodate the current situation but wanted to be honest and I do wish them luck. read more

I am writing this review in regards to treatment from staff - we were dining this evening and ordered 2 dirty martinis. The waitress brought each of them (2 mini glasses) in 2 large cups of ice. She did not tell us what anything was or how we were supposed to "concoct" our own drink. Naturally, we poured the mixers into the cup and the taste of the drink was completely diluted. When bringing this to her attention, she said that we were supposed to leave the mini glasses over the ice to keep them chilled. We had no idea. We asked if there is any way we can have new ones, and they said no you'll be charged for them. Never in my life have I been in a situation like this with a drink. We asked if they would just take them away thinking that maybe they would just take them off the bill. Then at the end of the meal we were charged not only for the 2 drinks, but additional charge to have them the "up" style. A cocktail glass with ice certainly doesn't hint at "up" at least not anywhere close to Manhattan. This could have been a good experience, but this really impacted our meal. You should think about customer service and how to treat guests if you want to avoid reviews like these or want them to rerun. read more

Wow. A spectacular night at Bia. Wonderful meal with amazing attention to every detail. The fish and chips was the best I've ever had. Crisp but not greasy. MUST try the thrice fried chips. We had a few salads which hit all the right notes. The cured salmon was divine. Our server was fun and skilled in helping us navigate the menu and wine choices. A must if you're in the Rhinebeck area for a date night or an evening with friends. Foodies will not be disappointed. I had never had what I would call "elevated" Irish food (or really good Irish food in general) before and when my wife chose this spot for our first dinner during our weekend trip to Rhinebeck, I was skeptical. Boy, was I wrong. This meal was something very unique and special. We started out with the Irish Stout Brown Bread. I love drinking stouts so figured, what the heck? Guess what? You don't have to like drinking stouts to love this bread. It is incredibly tasty, as is the cultured Irish butter that accompanies it. We next got 2 appetizers, the mushrooms in truffle oil (but not too much if you do not like truffle oil) and the salmon gravlax. Both dishes were unique and excellent. For our mains, my wife got the steak and ale pie, which was almost like a smaller Beef Wellington, except better with farmhouse cheddar in a puff pastry. I got the Schnitzel-which here was made with venison. The key with schnitzel for me is not to make it too fried, lest it turn into KFC or something. Here, the balance was perfect and the potato and apple salad (and granny smith puree) sweetened the pot (figuratively and literally) to produce and excellent dish. I cannot say enough good things about this spot. See my pictures for reference and definitely stop by if you're in town. With much anticipation three weeks after the opening, I looked forward to finally eating at Rhinebeck's newest restaurant, Bia. The chef, who led the wildly popular and delicious tapas joint, Elephant, in uptown Kingston, was apparently brought in here to lead some kind of Irish fusion endeavor?? Not sure why Irish, but with Rhinebeck restaurant owners fiercely bent on edging out their local competition, I understand completely....why not? The restaurant is located in the space previously occupied by Puccini's, Rhinebeck's finest Italian hideaway, which closed after a successful 5-year run on Garden Street, a remote corner off the town's main drag. Bia's new owner wonderfully renovated the previously stark white space with warm atmospheric style murals and new banquette seating; darkly welcoming and comfortably easy to dine in. When we arrived, most of the tables were occupied and the vibe was quite pleasant. The diners were smartly dressed, visually tattoo-free (for a welcomed change) and seemingly the type of customer who wouldn't flinch at the $30-$40 entree pricing. There is a garden too for romantic al-fresco dining out back. Briefly, the menu is interesting, including an obvious heavy nod toward traditional Irish influences; Beef and Cashell Pie, Champ (Irish mashed potatoes), Earl Grey Tea Cured Organic Salmon, Braised Lamb, Pork Belly.... and for the less-than-adventurous, more familiar dishes include cod fish, risotto, duck breast and some variety of steak, and a few vegetarian options. The wait staff was professional, if not overly attentive, which was an encouraging sign. However, during our first round of (excellent) wine and mixed Irish whisky drinks, the table conversation had to compete with some loud and very uninspiring pop music which proved to be anything but dinner-friendly. I would have mentioned something but chose not to. Here's your hint, now.... find something to play in the background, not to sing along to. Our entree orders arrived perfectly timed. And the plate presentation, top shelf! The scallops were exceptional, the cod, fluffy yet crisp, but the two remaining entrees, the lamb and the duck, not as well received by our guests. Still, 50/50 isn't bad for a new restaurant and specifically for a table of finicky locals. The meal was so rich that we skipped dessert. We'll definitely return to Bia for another visit, however, I'm hoping (selfishly) that once this Irish bent has run its course, the chef will return to what made him a real hit - TAPAS. I found it to be ok, just ok. I had the lobster bisque that was completely tasteless. It did have corn fritters in it which was a fun twist but still didn't make up for the blandness of the soup. For desert I had the Chocolate Espresso cake. It did not have any taste of espresso at all, the only thing I could taste was the strong chocolate. I also let my husband taste test both to make sure it was not just me and he agreed on both dishes. With that said my husband really likes this place which is why I give it three stars. A wonderful new restaurant in Rhinebeck. Our server Greg was fabulous - so proud of the new place and his role in helping to make it a success. I had never heard of modern Irish, but the food was excellent. They make two types of soda bread, the dark bread just fabulous. (We requested and got a few more slices to take home.) We enjoyed three types of cheese with cranberry chutney, candied nuts, and homemade pickles. Yum! For main courses we highly recommend the pheasant legs and the duck. Both were delicious, and the servings weren't huge. I didn't give five stars only because the wine-by-the-glass selection needs some attention (Pinot or another light red please), and our dessert had some ice cream churning troubles. Otherwise Bia is terrific and you should give it a try...and then go back again. read more

We ate at Bia for the first time. The 4 of us were delighted with the whole experience. We were greeted warmly by the host, who later explained the menu thoroughly. She was friendly and helpful through out the meal. The appetizers were delicious. Cauliflower vichyssoise and crab salad. We ordered 4 different entrees and again we were all so pleased. Seared scallops, butter poached lobster claw with pork cheek confit, roast leg of lamb and strip loin of beef. The gracious owner stopped by to ask how our dinner was. Maybe it was an off night but I ordered the appetizer carrots and received the side dish of roasted carrots. I told this to my server who countered with "at least it's cheaper than the appetizer!" My husband asked for an appetizer portion of the risotto and was told that it's meant to be an entree. PS. The customer is always right. Make it an appetizer portion. Charge half. Move on. Flavors were great but everything is really heavy. Think all foie gras, all the time. My scallops were lovely but served over a butter tart with creamed spinach. Not a lite fish dish! We loved everything at Bia so much that we cancelled our plans for thrle next evening and went back 2 nights in a row. From the beginning bread basket, which tasted exactly like irish soda bread, but better, and the excellent cocktails, inventive and delicious. The scallops were a winner, duck perfectly cooked and savory. Some of the dishes sound heavy, but they were not at all. I am not someone that would ever imagine posting a review of a restaurant, but I feel compelled to praise Bia Restaurant for one of the best meals I've ever experienced in the Hudson Valley. The warmth and beautiful decor of the restaurant are a pleasant preview of whats to come. The homemade soda bread with incredible homemade butter is unique and delicious. I found the menu small but filled with an incredible variety of meat, fish and even a full vegetarian menu the night I was there. Every one of the specials were special and sounded incredible which made choosing difficult. I ordered the Lobster Stew and the Pheasant. The Lobster Stew is the reason I am writing this review! The balance of flavors and beautiful preparation made this dish one of the most delicious things I've ever eaten, and I have eaten all over the world and would put this dish up against any dish, anywhere! The Pheasant was beautifully prepared and delicious and also a recommendation. My daughter ordered the scallops as this is one of her favorite things at Bia and I think one of their most popular dishes! Deserts are fabulous as well....Try the Apple Tarte Tartin! Even the incredible homemade whiskey caramels they give you with the check are delicious. Bia is truly a gem and gets my top consideration for food in the Hudson Valley. Bia was a highlight for us on our trip to Rhinebeck. The food was an experience I am going to think about for a while. The bread we started with was warm, slightly sweet and dense. Like a warm hug in bread form. The thrice done chips were perfect with the curry aioli. The marinated tomatoes with farmer cheese and cherries blew my mind. In texture and flavor it was something unexpectedly magical. The show stopper for me was the beef and cheese pie. Flaky and buttery pastry wrapped around melt in your mouth beef and creamy blue cheese. The HP sauce and fried greens were a wonderful addition as were the pickles. A perfect plate of food. The dessert was another surprise hit. Foie gras and roasted banana ice cream. Never in my life would I have thought I would enjoy this but it was a wonderful experience. Ultra creamy, rich and the roasted banana came through. Don't miss a chance to try this fantastic place. I've never been unhappier with a meal in my life. The drinks were sub par at best. The cured salmon appetizer was inedible. However, I could live with that from a newly opened restaurant. What is inexcusable is the fact that I was served chicken tenders instead of fried oysters. I don't eat meat. I feel violated because I asked not once, but twice, if what was on my plate was meat. I was told that it was definitely a fried oyster by both the waiter AND the manager. After it was confirmed to be chicken by the staff, no explanation or apology was given. I've never been treated so terribly at a restaurant. For a place with a vegetarian menu, there's no excuse for such terrible treatment to someone who doesn't eat meat. While I always try to support new restaurants in town, please do NOT support this restaurant that doesn't care to treat its diners with respect. read more
