Cool concept and fantastic place to eat and re-energize for more downtown exploring! There are many options to choose from, from the base to the proteins to the toppings! There are three bases to choose from , but the interesting one is the purple rice instead of the usual brown rice so that's a nice Asian touch. There are different proteins from spicy to mild, but the spicy is pretty firey with a kick to the tongue. The toppings are all very fresh and pair well with the proteins. The only thing is just that it was a bit salty for our tastes. Even with mixing everything together, it was either too salty or too spicy. When I found this place on Yelp, I was super excited. First off with, I am a huge fan of bibimbap. I like the idea of having a ton of vegetables in my plate. And I had never seen anything similar to Bibibop before. As a foodie myself, of course I would like to try it out yay I went with the beef bowl with purple rice as my base. I liked the seasoning of the steak, where it to a certain extent resembled the flavor of bulgolgi at Korean restaurants. The purple rice was a bit mushy though... I really hoped that I could get the nutty and chewy texture. What a shame :( The serving staffs were super friendly. And they were good at making your bibimbap very beautiful. I got the purple rice, spicy chicken, and all the toppings with the sesame ginger and Korean red sauce. Not too sure how I felt about the cheese with everything though, didn't really work for me. This place just opened yesterday and I can already tell this is going to become a fast favorite of mine! When I first got in, the line was crazy long but the staff is already a well oiled machine and I was in and out within 15 minutes. I got a spicy chicken bowl for about about $8.20 after tax and there's so much food in it! Everything tastes fresh and delicious and there's a great variety of sauces. If they added the option of getting a fried egg to top it, that would take it to another level. Can't wait to try the other flavors of sauces and meats! Update: knocked it down a star because the price for the small bowl has suddenly gone up. You can choose from white or purple rice, salad, or noodles as your base, and choose from a variety of toppings and protein. I chose the steak, and was glad that I did. The server was generous, and the meat had a sweet taste to it kind of like bulgogi or kalbi. There are traditional Korean toppings available and some not-so traditional options too. Hello kale, corn, and cheese. I topped off my bowl with Korean red sauce, which is gochujang for those that don't know. Spicy, of course, but that's how bibimbap should be, even if this is not your mom's version. There are chopsticks available (yay), and free miso soup (not Korean, but sure, I'll take it.) It honestly does not taste like bibimbap, but it's ok coz it's still tasty. I loaded mine up with spicy chicken, tofu, and tons of fresh vegetables. Kimchi is extra - like guac - so I obvi skipped it lol. I wanted to be healthy so I went with the cucumber wasabi sauce, which the staff told me was mayo-free. BF got both teriyaki & Korean red (gochujang), which proved to be way more sumptuous. After downing the free miso soup - yes, I had to re-emphasize that it's free - we both walked away super satisfied. Seriously, add this to your workweek lunch rotation! I like mixing the teriyaki with the fire red sauce, with some yum yum sauce to top it off. When you go through the line, don't be picky about what you're adding, just get all the toppings at the end (minus kimchi and pineapple if you don't want to pay extra). Pro tip: they're cool with you doing half and half for the bases...I usually get salad as a base with some purple rice. Don't forget the free miso soup! read more

This is definitely one of my favorite fast casual restaurants in Chicago. I absolutely LOVE the Korean red sauce (it is actually fairly spicy). I walked by last this place last week and I saw people walking away with orange and white bags and I got pretty curious. I came by twice this week as I stated that I am a bibimbap fan so I had to come and see if it was legit. When you walk in the door, you are greeted by the staff that will be putting your food together..it actually catches you off guard lol. You have your choice of rice, noodles or greenery to go start your bowl off...I chose the purple rice. Threw some black beans, sprouts, potatoes, kale, kimchi, red cabbage, carrots and spicy chicken in there. They have what looks to be shredded eggs in which I prefer the over easy egg with my bowl, but not an option here so shredded is your only choice. You can top your bowl off with the sauces they offer. I have tried korean red (ok), yum yum (pretty good) and cucumber wasabi (awesome). Both bowls I tried were pretty good as I switched up the ingredients both times. This pretty good bowl came out to $8 and some change...not bad! Good spot to stop in real quick for an inexpensive lunch or dinner if you work and/or live in the loop. read more

2 stars means "meh. I've experienced better" and that is exactly how I feel about Bibibop I've been there twice: once on opening day, and then today. I was really hoping today would be better, as they had time to smooth out the kinks. However, I am truly not a fan. The biggest problem to me is the ordering process. The employees seem stressed and like they're pressured to move customers along very quickly. I hate this feeling, and it's been super clear even when there's no one in line behind me. When I ask questions, I get short, curt answers. When I ask for a little of something, they don't accommodate and pile it on, and they don't seem to understand that I'm looking at the toppings but the names of the toppings are above my head, so no, I don't know what "yum yum sauce" is. I'm not impressed, and I won't be back. The food is fine (good luck getting it how you want it) but the experience is bad. read more

I stopped in for a dinner before a class I had nearby, at about 5:15pm the place was jumping and there was barely a place to be found inside the restaurant. Like many other reviewer's have said, it is a Chipotle-style assembly line where you can pick from a base, a protein, veggies and sauces. There were a good amount of choices, I picked the purple rice, half chicken half tofu, then opted for black beans, bean sprouts, cucumber, carrot and kale, then got the cucumber wasabi sauce. Everything was really good! The purple rice especially was really unique, the proteins seemed flavorful and good, the cucumber wasabi sauce was fantastic and went well with the actual cucumbers and other veggies. I was also pleasantly surprised to find all of the sauces available on the condiment table, so I was also able to try the Korean fire, which I thought was delicious! Miso soup is free, it is in a giant heated container next to the soda machine, and while there wasn't much tofu in in, it was still a nice compliment to an already good meal. It's a really interesting place, I am a fan of the Chipotle-style assembly line, and Bibibop has turned that into a unique Asian-style bowl that I haven't seen before. The only minor drawbacks I could see when I compare it to the ever-so-familiar Chipotle is that the protein portion and the overall portion seemed to be a little skimpier and the animal products have no ethical or natural claims. The cost is roughly the same, if not less, my bowl was did not exceed $8 without upcharges, the extra sauces and miso soup is a nice touch. When I called they told me they'd been having a problem with the drivers keeping food or drinks. This was told to me like that was the solution. Enjoyed this small Korean eatery. The Bibibop was delicious with many options that you can dress your salad with. But don't be deceived, I just said "salad" but this is anything but. Pretty sure this is not 100% authentic Korean food in the traditional sense (in fact, I know so since very rarely is cheese in any dish in East Asian countries cuisine) but it's honestly very good and probably as close to the real thing. The times I have been there, I see many Korean patrons so clearly if it has their stamp of approval - its pretty legit. They offer free miso soup which is nice (although some days its better than others) and if you are a student, you get a free drink ( I am in love with their lemonade). I have occasionally had a less than enthused worker prepare the bowl for me but minus those few occasions with rather unhappy employees, the service has been quick and friendly. Not surprisingly, the times I have had encounters with those rather cranky employees; it's also been where I have noticed that they are stingier and add a little less of everything. I like that they offer the small bowl which is like a dollar less but if you are not totally starving but yet want a filling meal, the small one will do the trick. I don't remember all of the toppings I got, but some of the ones I remember include pickled radishes, cucumbers, corn, and some lettuce. You can also get free miso, located next to the drinks. They give you a lot in the small bowl, I ended up having it for two meals. Since I got it to-go I didn't realize that the server gave me spicy chicken instead of regular chicken which made it a little hard to get through since I can't really eat spicy foods. The bowl totaled out to be a little under 9 dollars. I'd probably return if I was in the area and had to get something quick to eat, but I probably wouldn't go out of my way to stop by. read more
