These guys (and girls) were great. Bought a nice bike here over a year ago. The salesperson was patient and knowledgeable, and allowed me to take my time looking at and test-riding different bikes. He was really cool when we decided to shop around at other bike shops, even referring us to some local competitors. When we eventually came back later in the day, he was there to help us choose the bike we wanted and to pick out the necessary accessories. He even attached the accessories on the spot, rang us up and told us about the two free tune-ups and sent us on our jolly little way. Fast-forward a year and five months later to present day: I'm getting ready to start a new semester of school and decide that I want to start riding my bike since I live so close to campus. Sadly, I haven't been a very responsible bike owner because I haven't had a single tune-up in the year + I've owned the bike. I call down to the good people at Bicycle Discovery and explain the situation. I'm told by a lovely young lady who identified herself as "Jamie" that the free tune-ups are supposed to be within the first year, but to bring it on down anyway and that "it should be o.k.". She was right. My bike was received with open arms and a big N/C (no charge) tune-up was written on the work order. Then next day, I drive down to pick it up and was helped by a nice gentleman named "Shay" (sp?). He looked up my work order, retrieved my bike, and even helped me load it into the truck, as I have carpal tunnel syndrome and can't lift anything. We chatted a few minutes (turns out his g/f does the same thing I do (or did) for a living). Small world. Anyway, Shay, along with Jamie and everyone else I've dealt with at Bicycle Discovery have all been very professional, knowledgeable, nice and helpful. Keep doing what you're doing, guys! read more

Bicycle Discovery, which says nothing of the kind on the outside, is the kind of bike shop I like, but don't love. It has a truly massive selection of cruisers, yet also has a few token carbon road bikes and a couple Ellsworths at steep prices. Yet you try and buy a basic pair of cruiser pedals and they want $36. In fact, they *only* have a shitload of cruisers, and are weak on everything else except cruiser tires. If you want a chris king headset (not a rare item), an ultegra chain, or some crank bolts, you are better off going to Performance. Yet I like the flavor and of course the location, which is pretty much on the beach. Plus weird old dudes with cokebottle glasses work there. And James, he's a fast and cool dude. read more

This is the perfect place to rent your bike and cruise down Pacific Beach and Mission Bay Beach on a sunny, breezy day in San Diego. The location is literally 1 block from the beach front and there's a paved bike walkway for your biking adventures along the coast. Bike rentals starts at $8 for the first hour and $15 for 1-4 hours. Easy to use, light weight, single gear beach cruisers. This is probably one of the best deals in the area. Bikes come with a basket and lock. The staff is super friendly and helpful. We were in and out of there cruising in no time. read more

I've really tried to support Bicycle Discovery over the many years I've lived nearby, but after my experience today (July 28, 2020) I won't be returning again. I took my bike there to have the brake pads and rear wheel replaced. When I picked up my bike and started rolling it out the door, I checked the brakes and predictably the brake pad was firmly rubbing against the wheel. I turned around and showed it to them - they took it back, made an adjustment and returned it to me. I checked it again on my way out the door and it was still clearly rubbing - they adjusted it again and returned it to me again and yes, it was still rubbing against the wheel. Finally on the third try they were able to make the proper adjustment. One can only wonder why it didn't dawn on the tech to check this in the first place. I naively thought everything was resolved, but as I starting riding my bike, the front derailleur was not functioning properly as the chain was stuck in low gear and would not shift to the other two gears. I returned to the shop and they said they did not touch the front derailleur during their repairs and refused to take any responsibility for it. This, despite the fact that it was working perfectly when I took it there the day before. Further, when I dropped it off, it was not in low gear - I rode it downhill on Mission Blvd and I would not have put it in that gear, which I use very infrequently on steep hills only. Obviously they must have done something to the front derailleur as the chain was in a different gear. The tech refused to even check it out (perhaps only an adjustment would have solved the issue?) and said there's nothing he could do and they don't have this part in stock anyway. He seemed to blame it on a somewhat loose frame - it's been loose for years! Now, thanks to Bicycle Discovery, I'm out $120 and have returned home with an unridable bike. "The customer is always wrong" seems to be their motto. The bike shop I prefer (located in Ocean Beach) has a big backlog of repairs with a 2-3 day turnaround, so I won't be riding for the next few days. Over the years, the repairs I've had done at Bicycle Discovery have been hit or miss. Some of the techs are very good and others have bordered on completely incompetent. I would strongly caution anyone who is considering taking his/her bike there for repairs. There are several bike shops nearby that are far superior to Bicycle Discovery. read more

I took my 10 year old mountain bike in twice in the last couple weeks for some fixes. These guys really knew what they were talking about and really seemed interested in figuring out what was wrong with my bike and fixing it. Both times they spent a lot of time with my bike and made a lot of little adjustments, oilings, etc. that wasn't what I was getting fixed, but just second nature for them to fix what they see wrong. The parts and labor were pretty inexpensive for the level of service you get! My bike is riding like a dream now! read more

I found their shop while bicycling along the beach. I stopped in to see if they could fix an issue with my bike that another shop had failed to do(with excuses-no parts available for 2years etc.) Anyway, it was a problem with the crankset on my Specialized mountain bike. They took it right in and less than 45min later the part was replaced with a new one and my bike is like new. AND it was very reasonably priced. I'll drive from La Mesa for my repairs now. Good Selection, Decent Prices... Lacking customer services. I've been there a few times and they're usually nice about doing small repairs... but i swear everyone in there is too high to function properly, and I'm not the type to complain about that. I lived and biked in the Pacific Beach area for five years and never found a bike shop I loved. I wish this place had been open while I lived there. Rentals are $7/hour. Our group of 7 came here half-an-hour before closing time. Determined to get some kind of bike ride in PB...I negotiated with the cashier to hook our group up with bikes $3 for the half-hour. The guy was pretty fair and agreed if we promised to make it back by 7pm. We each quickly picked a beach cruiser that were all lined up outside and sped off into the bike trails. We made it back right on the dot and the crew was pretty nice about everything and took care of the bikes for us as soon as we got there. One thing I noticed, we weren't offered bike locks or helmets. I can do without a helmet since I'm pretty safe...but bike locks are a must! Therefore, I'm on the fence with this place...we did get a good deal within the nick of time and all but that's pretty much it. read more

I bought my adorable Phat Daisy beach cruiser here (the blue one). Yay! This is definitely a cruiser shop, and I had a fine experience here, but it lacks something in the soul department. I don't know quite how to describe it. I originally liked a different bike than the one I ended up purchasing. Bicycle Discovery refuses to put a bike on hold without a large deposit--not even for a couple hours. So between my boyfriend checking to see if they still had it and him going to get money to hold it--they sold it. I know! Ick. Ultimately though, I love the bike I ended up with, and it was a fairly decent price. The employees were friendly and helpful, and it's fun to test your potential cruiser right there along the beach. read more

Rental bikes were crap. All rusty, squeaky, horrible brakes, and flat tires. Needless to say, 5 mins after taking out the bikes for a ride, my friend and I turned around to return them and get our money back. At least they didn't make a big fuss about the refund. read more

I sent in my rear wheel to get trued since it had a little bit of a wobble. They came back and told me they couldn't true it because all the nipples were stripped out (which wasn't true). I ended up having them re-lace the entire wheel with new spokes and nipples since it was already there and hasn't been done since I bought the bike. I picked it up and did a brief once over, everything looked fine to the naked eye. During a ride 2 days after the repair I had 4 spokes break and all the nipples that they charged me for weren't all replaced. Only about half of them were. Not to mention they replaced the wrong sized spokes, and improperly laced them in the wheel. I called and inquired, I lost my receipt and asked if they had a service log or invoice, but they didn't have either on my bike, which is legally required by bike shops. This is not the first time I've ran into shitty workmanship, if you can't perform a service, why offer it and waste someone's money. I will no longer be coming here and nor will any of my friends. read more

My friend let me borrow her bike and I got a flat a few hours later after accidentally running over a goat head. Tire went flat while I was down in south Mission Beach and I don't have a car. Managed to change the tube but couldn't get the wheel back on right. Got it to a place where I could ride it and took it up to Discovery Bicycle up in PB. They put it on the rack, took a quick look, spotted the problem right away, and fixed it just as quickly. They really helped me out and I was really grateful for their help. I went in and found a bike that I wanted to purchase but it had a mismatched fender. The salesman was nice and said they could swap it out or discount the bike. I said thanks and that my husband and I would be back the next day. The following day we went back. This time dealt with Dave who had absolutely zero customer service skills. He wouldn't move from behind the desk, refused to do anything about the bike's fender, no discount, nothing. He could've had an easy sale but because of his rudeness and lack of motivation we chose to take our business elsewhere. read more

I had a jogging stroller that lost one of the nuts for a wheel. Went to ace and they didn't have anything that would fit and actually told me that a bike shop wouldn't have it either and I just needed to buy a new axel. Decided to just stop in this bike place cause it's close to our place we were staying and we had actually rented bikes from them before. The guy there took one look at the wheel and said I got you. 10 seconds later he came out from the back with exactly what I needed. When I asked how much he said "my treat". Went to Pacific Beach, San Diego on vacation. Rented bikes from Bicycle Discovery twice then bought two bikes. The people there are awesome, great customer service. I like the fact that when I bought the bikes they didn't just let us leave with them, they took the bikes to the bike tech in the back and he checked over and adjusted the bike to fit us comfortably before they let us leave. Came here on 2 separate occasions, 10 years apart. 1st occasion was to buy a cheap beach cruiser that, surprisingly, lasted me 10 years without fail. The second time was to buy and install a basket on said bike. I was on my daily training ride today when I got a flat tire. I walked into Bicycle Discovery & they took care of me immediately. I didn't even have my wallet with me yet they trusted me to come back & pay later. It cost me $60.00 for a tire & tube which is about half of what I normally pay at my local La Jolla bike shop. I came back within 30 minutes to settle my bill. I will be bringing my business to Bicycle Discovery from now on. Great job, folks. Excellent customer service. read more

I took away the star I added earlier. I pre-ordered & pre-payed, they said they'd call in a week. They never called. We called and called and called. The first time, the girl answering the phone put us on hold for a really long time, then said "umm, my manager just yelled at me, and said call back next month." We walked in when we were in the area, and a guy was able to figure out that the bike was in, but not yet built. We were stoked to hear it, but then they never called again. We called, and when we could finally get someone to give us answer, they said "oh yeah, it's ready and out on the floor." We rushed in. There it was, but my tag that said it was reserved wasn't on it. They found our paperwork, we got my bike. We also got told by the sales guy (strange, but very helpful in spite of the disorganized mess) that we were lucky to have come in when we did. They would undoubtedly have sold it that day to someone else. (Apparently they got 5 of those bikes in along with mine. All sold that day.) Um, this store would be great if they got a computer to maybe keep track of things... things like bikes, maybe. And learned how to use a phone. read more

This bike store is great. The staff are all extremely knowledgeable and eager to help you out. I must say they do slightly lack in the mountain bike department, but make up for it with enough beach cruisers to mobilize a small army (maybe not a very intimidating one). Prices are very fair. I had Discovery do a $48 tuneup last week, and initial impression of them was good. When I got ready to go for my first ride with the bike a week later I found the rear tire flat - the stem was broken off where the tire came through the rim. I was going to change it myself, but couldn't get the nuts on the rear wheel lose. That's when I noticed that they were covered with rust, and obviously hadn't been off the bike. I'm not sure what they did with the bike while they had it for two days, but unless the rear axle rusted in my apartment in the past week Discovery didn't do what they said they were going to do, and what I paid for. When I took the bike back over to talk to them about it, the idiot kid I spoke with implied that I didn't know how to change a tire, and wanted to argue with me about the obvious rust. In my book, these guys suck. Use at your own risk. read more

These idiots scratched my bike cranks and frame when all I asked them to do was tighten the bottom bracket bolt. Just had my bike powder coated, these guys do careless work. Do yourself a favor go somewhere else. You'll find better prices and definitely better service. Pacific Coast is a hundred times better. read more

I went to a lot of bike shops today trying to find a bike to buy in a few weeks. I was at another shop, and that shop recommended that I try Discovery to try to find the lightweight cruiser I was looking for. They should probably change their name so people who want any other bike besides a cruiser won't waste their time, but if you're looking for a cruiser, you have to stop in and see if they have what you're looking for. They carry the Townie that I was looking for, and they had a few different ones. I have seen them at a few other bike shops, but the others only had a couple of versions, and Discovery had quite a few to look over and compare (not to mention about a hundred other kinds of cruisers). Two sales people asked if I needed help and were attentive. The second one let me take some bikes out and ride them around and helped answer some questions I had. read more
