Finally found the brisket. It's in small print under each item for an upcharge of anywhere between $5 and $10. For example the sandwich is $19. They are happy to sell you the cheaper meats at a premium but if you want brisket you have to pay even more. If we wouldn't have already ordered onion rings we would have left. Son ordered a burger and I ordered fries. Ate almost all onion rings and one was raw and still had powder on the inside. Fries were good, son's burger was good, but we can get burgers anywhere. I did bring the onion ring issue to the waitresses attention just so she could let the kitchen know. When she brought the bill, they had taken the onion rings off. I did not ask them to do that, but they did it anyway.

The group Sunflower Seeds Ukraine is headquartered near Boulder and across the city, on two days this week there are events under the name, DINE OUT FOR Ukraine. This dinner at the Chautauqua Dining Hall is the first we are attending. The menu was created and cooked by the chef staff here, using modern high-end takes on Ukraine menu classics. It was beautiful, tasty and we loved it. By the time we learned of it, most seatings were sold out for the earlier time slots because a Ukrainian Quartet was performing at 7:30pm in the nearby Chautauqua Auditorium and many diners were going to both. We did not have tickets for the concert so we ate towards the end of the available Ukraine item service, though they were just fine. The regular menu was also available all evening for those who wanted it. I was familiar with many of these classic selections having eaten some my entire life and even made some myself years ago. My family is not from Ukraine but originated in that general geographic area so many common foods were available and my grandparents emigrated with similar recipes. There were drinks themed to the dinner too, a Mocktail for me and a Spritz for my husband which he generously let me taste. I loved both. The names and ingredients are on the pictured menu I posted. The Amuse to start was a Beet Borscht, each cleverly served in a small, tall glass. It was thick enough with pureed ingredients that it needed a tiny demitasse spoon for eating. The waitstaff could only find one in the stock still clean, so while they looked for more, my husband and I shared the one they had found. Quite funny actually but another time, the staff should be better prepared for such a possibility and have washed a few mid service. The taste was great, the texture was so different from my family recipe, which was a more soup tradition, this added surprise. But the beet flavor shone through, both ways. The first course was the Holubsti, a beef, rice "meatball" wrapped in cooked cabbage, spiced with onion and dill in a tomato purée whereas our home tradition was more of a tomato, ginger sauce. The entrée was Chicken Kiev, common in restaurants around this country, and was served with mashed potatoes and roasted carrots. Nothing my mother ever made! We always had plain roast chicken and boiled potatoes. The dessert was decadent with cream, almost a crêpe but thinner, stuffed with cream and topped with peach compote, the whole thing swirled with cherry coulis. Colors and tastes blended well. The peaches, a touch of Colorado. I was so pleased to have been a part, knowing a good deal of the cost was donated to such a good cause. They also had a table of Ukraine themed items to sell, staffed with their own volunteers, set up near the entrance. I am sure the music was worth the ticket price as we could hear some of it as we left and we hope there will be another time in the future to hear this group. The kitchen, the servers and the decor of the Dining Hall seating were good choices for such a fundraiser. We really do love Chautauqua and we will return to the Dining Hall for their Thanksgiving meal this year.

Oskar Blues has several locations but this is my first visit to any. I grabbed a "Dave's Light Lager" which hit the spot after a long hike. They were even nice enough to bring out a free appetite hush puppies! These were delicious and very crispy, and the sauce was tasty and refreshing. They have a large menu and lots of good options. So if you are new to this place, I would grab a menu and take a seat somewhere before ordering, if you haven't had a chance to look at the menu. My husband and I wanted to get a wide array of what was on the menu but we opted for the loaded street cart fries with a mix of sweet potato and regular fries and the OG gyro with beef and lamb mix. Because I wanted to try the chicken gyro I got the mixed meat for my street cart fries. They accidentally forgot to put it on my fries so I got it as a side. The food was really good, especially the sweet potato fries with a side of garlic aïoli. The fries inside of the gyro were pretty good, but I would but felt it was overloaded by other flavors. I also got a drink of a passionfruit Mezcal, which was nice and smoky. Overall, I would come back to the spot, but it is definitely not an everyday spot due to price point. It was around $52 for the two entrees, the drink and tip.
