Pretty tasty island fare in a new(ish) and well-kept spot near the beach in IB. We went for the coconut shrimp, spam musubi and teriyaki chicken bowl. Of the 3, the musubi was probably my favorite, followed closely by the shrimp and finally the chicken bowl. I wasnt super hungry so the bowl was good choice and was appropriately sized to fit my appetite. If anything, Id say the chicken had a wee bit too much sauce but it wasnt so bad that I didnt finish every last morsel nor did I even complain. I did notice another customer order a burger and that thing was HUGE. Next time I drop in, if Im more hungry, Ill go for a sandwich. We have been coming here for about 12 years and this place never fails to impress us with their delicious and shareable portions. We love to get the spicy aki bowl, and the bbq bacon burger. They serve the spicy bowl with sweet, sticky rice and yummy macaroni salad. This dish is spicy, yet tangy and you can add pineapple to give it a sweeter taste. Their burgers are ginormous and the buns are sweet too. I added their spicy mayo sauce to my bbq burger and it was the perfect combination of flavors. This place is dog friendly and has outdoor seating. This place has a laid back atmosphere with lots of Hawaiian decor. Definitely reminds me of visiting the islands. I am very happy I came in here today. I occasionally have a craving for spam musubi, and thought that musubi and beer would be a delicious lunch. I want to fuggin wreak havoc on that restaurant because there is no customer base and it has people running it that have little to no experience to know they are working in a shit hole. There were so many things you didn't see there that raised my eyes like they didn't have refrigerated cold drinks, they had a tiny beer section and all the pouring is done under the counter Where the lady's put their purses. The lobby had no music. They had an ice cream machine in the back and I asked about a soft serve and they don't sell sweets... not even on the menu and it looked like a used machine too. She directed me to all of where the sweets were in a glass bowl that was filled with offbrand candies. It was a large lobby. The burger was burned and you could taste the char on it and it made everything soggy. It was the worst experience I've had in a while in addition to the 30+min wait and made me throw up at 2:07 am. What a disappointment and an embarrassment. I suggested this place for dinner to my family. We ordered 2 Kalbi plates ($11.95 each) and a couple of burgers and appetizers. I have lived in Hawaii and Asia and the picture that depicted the Kalbi was on point. However when it was served to us, I immediately sent it away. I know not everything will look the way it does in a menu. But damn, there couldn't have been any lazier way this was prepared and presented. My first cousins from Florida planned a last minute trip to San Diego because they wanted to spend time with my Dad, who had some extended trips to the hospital. We haven't seen our first cousins since 2003, so I felt bad that we hardly spent any time with them during their weeklong visit to America's Finest City. My first cousin said that her primary reason for visiting was to spend time with her Uncle, my Dad. Due to my brothers' and my work commitments, we weren't able to get together until Friday night, so I coordinated with my cousins, my parents, my brothers, and our wives to get together for dinner. One thing you would quickly determine if you met my family is that we're really close and we strongly believe in what my Dad instilled in all of us, which is Family First Always. I thought Big Kahuna's (BK) would be the perfect place for our family to get together especially since the word Ohana means Family. Big Kahuna's is located in Imperial Beach just before the start of the 10 mile 2-lane drive thoroughfare to Coronado called the Silver Strand. It's specifically located in an outdoor strip mall across from a local fitness center and across from Meijo Sushi. There is plenty of parking in this strip mall and for a Friday 6:30pm evening, the restaurant wasn't busy at all. A strong positive about BK is that you're able to make reservations, which was really convenient for our party of 10. As you park in front of BK, you're greeted by their cartoon character of what looks like a hefty Samoan wearing a lei, Hawaiian shorts, holding a surfboard, and proudly displaying a gigantic hamburger. The entrance to the restaurant has a grass skirt awning. Inside BK is plenty of seating and our large table for 10 was already waiting for us. The decor, ambience, and music instantly lets you know that you're about to eat some tasty Hawaiian food. There are surfboard tables, bamboo covered walls, Tiki statues, pics of beaches and Hawaiian dancers, and a hanging Great White Shark. There are two tvs for your viewing pleasure and bar seating. We received stellar customer service from our waitress and her assistant. Wish I got her name, but she was wearing a tube top and she looked of mixed ethnicity. She always checked up on us, was very friendly, and she split our bill evenly in threes, so my brothers and I could pay for the meal. My four star rating encompassed the excellent customer service, reservation capability, and the delicious eats. For starters, we ordered two orders each of the 8 deep fried coconut shrimp with sweet chili sauce and Big Kahuna's cheezy stix. Although I wish these appetizers were more bountiful, they were just right because the dinner plates and sandwiches were a good amount of food. I thought the shrimp was really tasty and you can distinctly savor the coconut. The cheezy stix were okay, but could have been bigger. I'm a loco moco fanatic. I've eaten this Hawaiian staple at Island Style Cafe, Homestyle Hawaiian, Ono's, L&L Hawaiian BBQ, and other Asian/Hawaiian establishments, so I know a quality loco moco. I wouldn't say BK's version is top notch, but I really enjoyed eating the loco moco here. The loco moco is a heaping plate of a ground beef patty, onions, brown gravy engulfing the rice, 2 fried sunny side eggs on top, and a generous scoop of their famous macaroni salad Hawaiian style. The gravy could have used more seasoning and the eggs were slightly overcooked, but as you'll see from my before and after pictures, I would have no problem eating that plate again. Definitely ask for the macaroni salad because that was some bomb diggity mac salad. For drinks they have Pepsi fountain products and they also sell Hawaiian canned flavored soda. I'm glad I selected Big Kahuna's to eat dinner and hang out with my cousins. If you're looking for a place that's not crowded, has food that you'll enjoy, decor that reminds you of Hawaii or the beach, and have employees that understand how to take care of diners, then BK is your Huckleberry. My family went to Big Kahuna's for the first time today. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich with fries. The sandwich tasted okay. However, the bun was thin and falling apart as I ate it. Man what do I say. We had eaten at BK just a few months ago and the review I would've written then? 5 Stars. Everything was excellent, real Onion Rings, beers on tap and the burgers were top notch. We had just returned to IB and decided to take the kids as we had talked up this place since our first visit. Problems right out of the gate. They were out of a few beers. Okay, no worries their on draft so it happens. We order the tots and O rings and are a bit surprised when the O rings come out looking like they'd just rolled off the Sysco truck. You know each one perfectly formed looking like oversized Cheerios? Ugh. Then the burgers arrived. Buns? Different. Meat? Different. Guacamole? Obviously the prepackaged pablum that you squeeze out of a Sysco bag. And then the bacon. When I order a bacon burger I would at least like to see 2 pieces of bacon, not one that was torn into a multitude of pieces and buried under the "guacamole" I've eaten at enough restaurants to see the signs. Cost cutting measures galore and the evil Sysco Corporate Food Conglomerate has inserted their fingers into the business in an attempt by the owner at stave off imminent closure. Went to Big Kahuna's for lunch with my sister on my birthday. I used to go there every so often but I hadn't been there in a while since pre-pandemic. I ordered the Big Kahuna Burger as is my usual and my sister ordered the coconut shrimp. One reviewer wrote that the burger was smaller than they remembered well I don't know what they remember but when the Big Kahuna Burger arrived it was actually bigger than I remember... And I remembered it was so big I could only eat half of it. The burger was cooked to perfection and yes I could only eat half of it. The coconut shrimp that my sister ordered was cooked perfectly you know sometimes shrimp tends to be over fried but this was absolutely perfect. The sauce they provided with it was excellent. 7 pieces were just the right amount. I ordered a big wave beer and I really enjoyed it it was the perfect beer for the burger in my opinion. Especially if you like shock top or blue moon. I don't know what some people expect but to me this place is awesome.
