This little spot is a couple of miles off the beach. Perfect location in what appears to be fairly new shopping strip. Funny, thing: it is right across from a fitness spot. If you're heading for the beach and want to take a lunch to go, this is a good spot. It has the staples: Burgers and fries. Soups. Salads. Rice bowls. Ribs. Grilled chicken. Pork dishes. Loco Moco, of course. I went for the mahi-mahi sandwich, which is served on a plump, soft bun with lettuce and tomatoes. It was substantial. The sandwich itself was huge! Big kahuna, eh? Certainly enough for two people who aren't too-too ravenous. But with all the lettuce and tomatoes, the flavor from the fish -- which was lightly seasoned -- was drowned out. That's too bad, because everything was so fresh and light. The sandwich came with a massive order of fries, which were very good. Also quite fresh, with the perfect amount of salt. I do recommend the coconut shrimp appetizer. It was a tad bit on the greasy side, but the flavor was perfect. And the shrimps are fairly plump. As for the ambience, it really feels like a casual bar. But folks do show up with their younglings. It does have a nice family feel to it. As for outdoor seating - there is one round table with shade situated right at the entryway. I got a chuckle. So, I'm on a health kick and when my husband brought home their Teriyaki Chicken bowl... I was not a fan. You can tell the chicken lived in the marinade before it was cooked with it. Husband got the Big Kahuna Burger. The menu specifies it's on a Hawaiian bun so we expected a Kings Hawaiian style bun or even roll. It is on a normal style bun- wtf? Disappointment number one. The patty was bloody and pink, more so than he would have liked and nobody asked him how he wanted it cooked. He cut me off a piece and it tasted a lot like a Bubba burger, a frozen patty grilled as is. The fries were delicious with a crispy coating, I really liked them. I decided to be adventurous and ordered some kind of breakfast item that consisted of ground Beef in a sauce on top of rice with two eggs on top. The ground beef tasted like a less tastier version of stroganoff. I wasn't feeling it- didn't eat much and didn't ever reheat the leftovers. It wasn't disgusting or anything, I just wouldn't ever want it again. The macaroni salad was probably my favorite part of my meal but you can get that at Ralph's. It was my first time at Big Kahuna and this will be my last. We ordered the brisket platter with rice and Mac salad. The rice was under cooked, the brisket was ok. My cheese fries were stuck in the yellow paper it came in. It was all melted together and hard to take apart to eat. Looks like someone snotted all over it. Didn't look appetizing at all. The rice in the spam musubi was the worse tasting. How do you mess up rice?! It was undercooked and left a bad taste in my mouth. The spam was also burned to a crisp. Volcano burger was cold and bun was all scrunched up. They just slapped the ingredients together and boxed it up. The only decent tasting things were the cheese bread, the brisket and the Mac salad (and that's being nice). Hawaiian food should have some love put into it's preparation. Found this place after going to the beach at Silver Strand. My I got the chicken aki and my mom got the teriyaki chicken, both really good. The mac salad wasn't what I normally expect from islander places, but still pretty good. They had socially distancing regulations in place, but we went around 3pm on a Saturday and there was only one other group of people in there, which was nice. Not bad by any means. We decided to try this place for dinner and we all found something we thought sounded good. The food was ready fast and everything came hot....everything except all the parts of our order that were missing. We all got out entrees but all of our sides were missing. We got a Kalua pork dish- this was very good. This was supposed to come with a side salad that we did not get We got the teriyaki plate- not terrible but very salty. This was supposed to come with macaroni salad and that was not received. We also got a grilled chicken plate-very tough and overcooked. This was supposed to come with macaroni salad and coleslaw. We did not the Mac salad but got the coleslaw The best part of our order was the coconut shrimp- they were delicious and we could not eat them fast enough. We did call to tell them about the parts of our order that was missing and they seemed to know that we were missing part of our order. I've never been to this place before and my god I'm glad I finally went. Showing up there is great the staff was good to us and the menu was easy to understand not like other places. When you walk in your greater and you take your own seat the menus and silverware are on the table ready to go. I ordered a big kahuna burger because I'm a big fan of pulp fiction and Tarantino's work. The display of the burger and appetizers did not disappoint. If you are looking to take the family out this would be a good place to go. They have music playing but here is the perfect part it's not too loud it's s not too low it's just right. Wanted to try a new burger spot and we were not disappointed! The restaurant is decorated in a fun beachy way and my kids loved sitting by the giant shark. The waitress was so nice and friendly with the kids too, they have coloring to occupy them. Staff was even so patient when a ranch was accidently smacked off the table by the baby. I finally went to BK, it had been one of the few places I had left to go now that I live in Imperial Beach. All in all it was a very enjoyable experience. The girl who helped us was so so nice and friendly, she helped us by explaining a few things about the menu. The place was very clean and there's a very cool atmosphere. Very easy parking and the service overall is fast and efficient. I ordered the teriyaki plate with rice and salad. The teriyaki sauce was so tasty and delicious, the rice was so yummy too and I enjoyed the salad very much. My fiancé ordered the Aki Chicken and it was super tasty and the macaroni salad was awesome too. We normally don't eat the rice but it was very well cooked and tasty in this place. The patio is a cute little place to sit, but my boyfriend and I usually do takeout for two reasons: 1) We like a little more quiet and the open floor plan makes it a bit noisier in the restaurant and 2) if you call ahead, it is ready for you when you get to the restaurant so it essentially gets rid of the wait time. When my parents were in town, we brought them there and literally all of us got the spicy aki. You just can't go wrong with it! A burger doesn't take 5 minutes to make from fresh ground beef especially if it was well done.
