We really wanted to like this place but it was just OK. Actually by far the best thing we ordered was the banana pudding - it was fantastic and a giant serving! After seeing very good reviews we stopped in for an early dinner and sat outside at one of their tables adjacent to the parking lot (not exactly scenic). Our waitress was super friendly and super attentive. She did a great job. We ordered one of their 3 meat platters with burnt ends, brisket and 2 spare ribs. We also got a complimentary pulled pork sandwich for signing up on their website. Often pulled pork sandwiches can be dry but this pork was moist and the bun very good. The other three meats were a bit disappointing. Not a huge fan of spare ribs compared to baby backs - not much meat and a bit tough. The burnt ends were dry and the brisket average. Just finished an amazing lunch! I have enjoyed great BBQ in Houston, KC and Nashville but this hidden gem was some of the best I have ever had! My husband had the 3 meat platter - brisket, ribs and hot sausage and I had the meatloaf. Truly fantastic smoked meat! The sides of collards and pinto beans also were on point. Unfortunately, Cape Coral is not known for their barbecue scene. So, if you're in the mood for smoked meats, you really don't have that many options. If you're looking for finger licking, melt in your mouth barbecue like you find in Texas, this place will not hit the mark. However if you're looking for the best barbecue that Cape Coral has to offer, then you may be onto something. The owners and the staff are friendly, polite, and very welcoming. Aside from a few tables that hadn't been bussed, the restaurant was clean and had country music playing lightly over the speakers. The menu offered a full bar and lots of protein options. Sometimes when you go for barbecue, you get to pick from ribs or pulled pork. This place has smoked sausage, turkey, chicken, brisket, and pork. They also offer four different unique sauces which you can taste are homemade. At this point you're probably wondering why I don't just give this place five stars, but honestly it just wasn't a five-star experience. The cornbread was a big, warm, individually wrapped muffin, which they served with whipped butter. Sounds amazing right? Then you take a bite and the muffin is dense and tastes like flour but also sweet like a cupcake with little to no actual corn in it. Good but not great. The collard greens were served in a mini crock. They were perfectly cooked and tender with tons of brisket. The first few bites are amazing and then the vinegar takes over and it's all you can taste. Good but not great. The 8-cheese mac and cheese held up to its name. It was oozing with cheese. It too was served in its own crock and it looked melty and dreamy. Then you took a bite and it was under seasoned and the cheese sauce was broken. Good but not great. Did we enjoy it? Yes. Will we go back? Yes. Will we order different things? Yes. Will we recommend it to our friends? Yes, if they are craving barbecue and can't travel to Texas. We've had the ribs, pulled pork, brisket, the tornado-OMFG!!, smoked potato salad, Mac & cheese, both kinds of beans AND THE LIFE CHANGING CORN BREAD!! I loved everything-the green beans were off so we tossed them. We thoroughly enjoyed this meal and their family meals are enough for double what they suggest. Get the Memphis sauce they make. 3 things about this place: 1. Great, clean space along with wide dining tables. Staffs were friendly and constantly kept checking to see how everything was. Had a flyer with free pulled pork sandwich and they gave huge portion of pulled pork which was a big plus. 2. The place looked short staffed as the server sat my sister and I to our seats. Waited over 20 minutes to place the orders and not even waters were given until so late. The table next to us came in 20 minutes after we sat down and they placed their orders less than 5 min after sitting down. 3. Brisket, ribs, pulled pork with garlic mac & cheese, Texas baked beans, and potato salad were ordered and they were pretty good. However, ribs were a little difficult to eat so I don't think I'll order the ribs next time. Glad they had different sauces for us to try. I'm a big brisket guy and these guys are spot on! My only complaint is the sauce (or I'd give five stars). There were only three choices. The Texas sauce didn't impress me, kinda like Tabasco mixed with the Memphis sauce. They need something like a Smoked but not sweet sauce (some call it Smokey Mountain). Where this place excels over other places is their beer selection is great! I just wish more taps would be local micros. The mega Bud kinda people have no problem ordering cans. I like their location as it's near the action. They had a guy playing live music and that was a plus. It seems that he was just a little too loud considering that the place didn't have many people (it was early). We will definitely be going back again and again! read more

Discovering the barbeque at BIG8 BBQ is one of the greatest surprises of my time in Southwest Florida. How can BBQ this good possibly be found in a place like Cape Coral? You'd be forgiven if you're asking yourself the same thing. Found in an unassuming strip mall on SE 47th Ter it might be easy to overlook. But make sure BIG8 gets your attention. I first need to offer my credentials. Not only am I a bit of a foodie, I know my BBQ. Before moving to Southwest Florida I lived in South Carolina, where one's choice of BBQ establishments -- heck, one's choice of BBQ sauces! -- could make or break a friendship. I've eaten good BBQ, bad BBQ, and everything in between. This restaurant claims that their meats are so good there's no need for sauce. I was initially skeptical. But y'all. Their meats really ARE so good you can skip the sauce. I'm honestly not sure how you can go wrong here. The pork, the chicken, the brisket, the ribs, the sausage -- their smoked meats are created through a slow, methodical, labor of love. And don't let yourself get so carried away by the meats that you skip the sides. All of their sides pair well with their meats. (A note about spice levels. If BIG8 says their Texas beans are hot, you should include the word "very" before the word hot.) The restaurant recently added some additional items to their menu. Of particular note are the smoked cheeses with pretzel bread. Oh my word. So good. I can't speak to the restaurant experience, as the prolonged pandemic meant that my family has only ordered takeout and delivery. But with BBQ this delicious I'd be able to overlook minor in-person service issues anyway. How can BBQ this good possibly be found in a place like Cape Coral? I still don't know the answer to that. This downtown Cape Coral BBQ is a comfortably casual restaurant run by genuinely friendly staff. It's an al a carte menu (for the most part), so meats and sides are ordered separate. There's a beer and cocktail menu on the table with the other menus. Also, since beverages are served in bottles and cans individually, they can offer both Coke and Pepsi products. Our first experience dining here left a good impression and we're looking forward to coming back. The Brisket was exceptionally tender, perfectly moist and had excellent flavor by itself. I had it on a Corn-dusted Kaiser Roll. I used a small amount of a sauce and ate until I was completely full. I had some left to share. The Jambalaya was a solid entrée but would have been elevated with a bit of a seasoning kick. Someone stopped by the table (manager? /owner?) and suggested having it with the "Texas Sauce". Unfortunately, he came back and apologized as the chef hadn't gotten to the sauce that day. We'll ask if the sauce is available before we order next time. We both ordered Cornbread and Beans (sweet) for sides. They were both solid options. The cornbread was plenty moist but did fall apart while we consumed it. The beans were chock full of meat. I hesitate to say too much meat, because saying that seems silly. However, for my personal taste, it was. The ratio honestly seemed to be 50 percent each, meat and beans. I tried to target some bites with mostly beans and still came up with big chunks of meat, so each bite I seemed to be tasting the meat more. A minor point but maybe worth mentioning. Like most good BBQ places that batch cook their meats low and slow, they regularly run out of proteins toward the end of the day. When we arrived around 6:30 PM, they had run out of all fowl / poultry. Around 7 PM I heard them telling a table they were out of ribs. This is common and understandable, as far as we are concerned. Keeping a balance of freshly prepared proteins and estimating how much to prepare without waste, seems like a big challenge that is very necessary at any time but especially during this time of sky-rocketing food costs. I ordered the Burnt Ends with corn bread as a side and my dining companion ordered a combo platter with pork, burnt end and jalapeño sausage with corn bread, beans and 8 cheese Mac and cheese. Food came out quickly. Generous portions and the food tasted great. Everyone there was nice and the service was great. More people came as we were finishing. Maybe it's a hidden gem. My husband ordered the Brisket and I ordered the burnt ends. Our daughter ordered the pulled pork sandwich and her friend ordered the Half of a chicken. I tried my husbands brisket and it was delicious! The best I've ever had. The burnt ends were good and flavorful. Our daughter loved the pulled pork. And the chicken was moist and really good. This is one of the best restaurants I have ever been to in my entire life (I'm 55 years old). Me and my entire band stopped in here for a bite before putting on a show across the street. I had the brisket (with a salad), which was fantastic - never had anything this good before. Food was excellent and was brought out promptly. The waitress was very nice, very thorough (there were 6 of us) and after taking all of our orders, went over all of our orders to make sure she had it right (which she did). So my son and I ordered delivery. I have to admit we are pretty dang disappointed. I got the meatloaf sandwich in Cuban bread, with Chad dat and Slaw. A soda and some cobbler. The meatloaf is delicious. Nothing but high marks there. The bread...inedible and definitely Not Cuban. A large soda ... is a 12 oz can. Blackberry cobbler ... edible but way average. If you have not been here yet, or are not a regular, you are really missing out! I had the Cubano Sandwich (smoked ham and pulled pork with a sweet mustard sauce) it was Ah.mazing! Everytime we go to a new city, we make it a point of trying a local neighborhood spot. Big 8 BBQ was our choice this time. The reviews sounded good and the pics looked delicious. When we got there, the place was fairly empty. I think we were the only dine-in customers at the time. They had several folks picking up takeout while we there. We were seated promplty and the server took out drink orders. The menu has several meat options with a decent selection of sides. I ended up going with my standard BBQ order, ribs & sides. The wife order the burnt ends and garlic mac-n-cheese. Took a few minutes to come out but not overly long. The food looked great. Oh the drinks are bottle retail versions? That isn't a deal breaker but should be noted. The wife said her burnt ends were a little spicy for her but otherwise good. The mac-n-cheese was very cheesey. My ribs were very tender and decently seasoned. I chose the Mephis style sauce. Glad they serve it on the side. It was a tad sugary sweet but had a nice heat to it. The coleslaw was good. The cornbread came wrapped in plasticwrap like a mummy and took effort to open up! It tasted decent but was fairly dry. The super sweet whipped spread that came with it didn't do it any favors. WOuld have been SO much better with some melted REAL butter! Overall it was a pretty good meal. The decor is kind of typical "bbq rustic", clean and spacious. Being that we were the only customers eating in at the time, service was rather slow. I had to go find the server twice, only to find her gabbing with coworkers. I mean I get it, it was probably a slow day. They probably mostly do take out during the week, but still. Also - she gave us 2 little individually wrapped "tablets" and a small container of water. Our first visit tonight to BIG8 BBQ will not be our last. The food was amazing with generous portions. I had a mini tornado which was crazy, pulled pork, brisket, Cole slaw, Mac n cheese 4 different kinds of sauce.
