My son broke his skates and after looking at many reviews regarding skate shops (particularly pro shops for roller skates and there are not many in the area, I took him to the pro shop on Saturday, August 17. I explained to him that my son was special and I did not know much about skates nor did I have much knowledge in the area of replacement parts, cleaning, wheels etc. Both his caretaker and myself got an education on the repairs, parts of skates and how to determine if new ones are needed. I was prepared to purchase new skates but was told several times that he does not need new skates and explained why. A number of sales personnel would have taken my money and said come back again. Kevin is extremely knowledgeable, honest, superb customer service skills and enjoys the work he does and most important he is such a great person to work with and enjoys sharing his knowledge with others. We waited while his skates were repaired. My son will resume skating this week. If you need someone who has the knowledge about skates, and you want honesty, patience and excellent customer service skills, I recommend you patronize Kevin's shop. You won't be DISAPPOINTED. My experience was sheer I professionalism. I really wanted to like this skate shop especially because I read it was black owned. Unfortunately, I won't be back. While I did leave my skates there for a repair, prayed all the way home, and was pleased with the results, Customer service and professionalism goes a longer way with me. Kevin barely acknowledges customers, he doesn't seem to understand the principles of being cordial and professional. I couldn't believe he asked another worker what I wanted while I was standing right there!! I said...I CAN speak for myself! I was there in July and had to wait outside for an hour in the hot sun. Each time they opened the door, they didn't seem to care that customers were outside baking!! I would expect this company to at least acknowledge and let customers know you appreciate them waiting and their LOYALTY. Dang, instead they seemed to care less that we were waiting 15-30 minutes between customers. I was so disappointed with the lack of concern. I recently stopped into Bike and Skate after hitting up an adult skate night at a local rink. The skate night was my first time on roller skates in almost a decade. The break between the skate night and my last roll before the skate night was more than 15 years ago. "Rusty" is not the word I'll use to describe my current status. I think "completely foreign" might be more appropriate. In any event, I figured I'd get back into roller skating since it's a good workout and it's really fun. Wearing the peanut butter rental joints was cool but I figured that getting some new skates, after 15+ years, might be an added booster to the motivation I already had. Enter Yelp and Bike and Skate... FYI, I'm also into cycling. I have a full carbon Dura Ace/Ultegra Trek 5200 so a pro shop named "Bike and Skate" was organically resonate to me. Kevin, of Bike and Skate, was extremely knowledgeable and he offered a level of service that made the visit to his shop productive. He asked questions about what I was looking to accomplish and he offered viable suggestions. Kevin did not try to push the latest and greatest nor did he try to sell me the most expensive skates in the shop. He conducted a fitting and then he went on to explain the components of the skate. In doing so he clarified the pricing of different models of roller skates and accessories. I found a pair of skates and made the purchase. I'm looking forward to putting them to use! This was my first place of skates and it was a terrible experience. The service was awful and they acted as if they didn't care. I walk in and i'm not even greeted or asked if i needed help. I wanted to try on some skates so he let me....for a $10 fee. That already set me off. The place was filthy as well, and when a new person would come in, he would stop service with the person he was already working with. They acted like they were doing ME a favor by having me pay for overpriced skates. I would rather drive 8 hours for nice service and skates worth a damn than an hour for awful service. read more

I was in search for a new pair of roller skates and was having a hard time finding any skate shops near me that had roller skates. I live in Howard County, but I found 'Bikes and Skates' online decided to make the hike up to Capitol Heights. The store closed at five and I didn't get there until a bout 10 minutes before close.... but I decided to take a chance. Luckily Kevin, the owner (I think), gladly welcomed me in. Along with two other men that were working, Kevin was attentive and honest about the quality of certain skates and what would be the best investment. I ended up purchasing one of the more expensive pairs of skates because I realized it was something I would want to really use and persevere long-term. Despite me coming in right before closing time, they fitted me into various skates and helped me make my choice. Not to mention this is a small, black-owned business and I would much rather support them opposed to Amazon, etc. The shop is small and probably could use some organizing for the merchandise, but that was not a factor that deterred me by any means. The owner showed up 25 minutes late to open his store, saw 4 people waiting on line in the rain and didn't have the decency to greet us or apologize for being late and not answering our phone calls. Instead of being professional, gracious and thanking us for waiting and offering something such as something off/coupon, he says "blame traffic not me". As a grown up in the DMV we all know how much extra time we need to allow for traffic since it doesn't change. I thought that was a childlike response instead of a grown man and business owner response. The lack of professionalism and customer service is a huge turn off so I will not recommend this place or patronize it. He has no respect, regard or gratitude for his customers and their time and acts like we owe him something. Like we should be happy to line up in the cramped parking lot and wait 45 minutes to be let in. He has a horrible attitude. read more

It's a shame that people act like you are doing them a favor by trying to patronize their business, but I guess that's the world we live in today. It's also a shame that owners leave their shops in the hands of unfriendly and unqualified people, but again that's what's going on these days. I brought my bike in for a tune up. No one helped me in the heavy non-automatic door with my bike. Strike one. Without even inspecting or touching the bike, I'm given a quote. Strike two. When I ask a simple question, such as how long will it be before I get my bike back, the person left in charge of the store says he doesn't know. He also didn't know when the owner would be back and when I asked if he could call the owner to inquire, he said his phone only takes incoming calls. Strikes three, four, and five. I don't need to beg you to take my business or money. I tried to spend my dollars in PG county, but I guess I'll take my dollars up the street to Crofton where I get quality customer service. read more

Friendly efficient service. I stopped by to get my kids' bikes fixed on a Saturday afternoon. They assessed the bikes and repaired them in less 20 minutes. Glad to know that I don't have to hike to College Park. They also sell bikes, rollerskates, and accessories and repair skates too. Definitely a good place to know about. read more

I went to several local bike shops but it wasn't until I came to Bike and Skates that I actually pulled the trigger and purchased a bike. I'm new at cycling but Kevin explained everything to me plainly so I could understand and was extremely patient with me and my 101 questions. I also liked that he wasn't trying to sell me a bike. I felt like a mark when visiting other bike stores but not with Kevin. He listened to what I wanted and explained the differences in bikes and gave his recommendation.
