Flew in from Cali and this was our 1st stop. It's fancy but not uncomfortable for the laid back folks. The staff is so sweet and the manager Micheal is just a sweetheart. We were in town for a birthday and they brought cake and it was a sweet treat. They stored our luggage while we shopped and were just genuinely kind. I'm loving Dallas so far. I have to say the service and food was amazing as always. However 1/2 way through my visit a group of entitled Highland Park/SMU students with their bleached blonde mothers took over three tables next to me. Of course, they acted as if they were the only people there. I was trying to speak to my daughter, but could not hear due to one of the mother's trying to talk to someone at the other end of the table. I told her I could not hear; she was indignant and stated that she would be louder then. One of the "boys" then told me to "fuck off" and acted as if he was going to come toward me. I can find a salad and crab cake in another part of town and not have to be harassed by individuals who think they are the center of the universe. Shame on the adults for their behavior. I met my parents and brothers at Bistro 31 for an early dinner at 4:30 on Monday. It was the perfect time to enjoy the quiet atmosphere and made for a very relaxing and enjoyable meal with my family. This is my second time to dine here and the food and service is always impeccable. We ordered salads, escargot and lobster bisque as starters, and everything tasted amazing. The escargot were tender and succulent, but not overpowered by the butter sauce or garlic. The lobster bisque had nicely sized chunks of meat in a smooth and creamy soup and was delicious. I recommend the 4oz serving to save room for dessert. My father ordered the Bistro salad and is always a pleasure to see it arrive at the table as it's wrapped in a cucumber "crown". It makes for an elegant presentation and is so fresh. For the main dishes, my father, brother and myself ordered the Dover Sole with green beans and root vegetables. It's served table side and deboned before serving. There was a slight hiccup with mine but it tasted delicious as always. My other brother ordered the Lobster Bolognese and said the pasta was cooked to perfection. Al dente pasta is his favorite. My mother and brother's girlfriend ordered the Steak Frites and we all jumped in to grab some of the frites which are a delight to share. Afterwards, we all shared an order of the Crème Brûlée and a Pear and Mascarpone Tart with some coffee and 12yr McCallan. I ordered the spaghetti chitarra with lobster from Postmates....I was so excited but it is not very good. As soon as I opened up the plastic top this old seafood smell hit me. Bistro 31 and its sister lounge upstairs Lounge 31 have both been around for a long time. It's easy to forget the quality of the food and the restaurant with so many options out there; however, after another recent visit, I say it should be in everyone's rotation for a special occasion. Being in Highland Park Village, it is a bit more upscale and the prices reflect that, but the food is well worth the prices. Both are a part of Lombardi Family Concepts restaurant group, and Mr. Lombardi and his team knows how to make good food. We were there on a very busy Friday night. Don't expect to just sit down because the place was packed. I may have forgotten about this place, but so many others haven't. A reservation is recommended here. We ate at the bar and had incredible service from the wonderful bartender there. Drinks were amazing. I'll have another dirty martini, please. Some of the highlights for me were my entree Tagliolini with Wild Mushroom, House Cured Pancetta, Truffle Cream and Aged Goat Cheese. I am by no means a connoisseur or a world traveler; but this for me was truly some of the best pasta I've had in Dallas or most any other city. It was all a delightful combination of flavors together. The earthy mushrooms and truffle cream mixed so incredibly with the salty pancetta and tangy goat cheese. It was simply heaven. We also somehow scored a sampling platter from upstairs at Lounge 31 which was just as fantastic. I don't remember all that was on the tray, but the more memorable pieces of it was Ahi Tuna Tostadas, which was beautiful in its simplicity of tuna, avocado and chili sauce; chicken potstickers (Yum! I could have eaten a dozen) and stuffed jalapeno tempura, which was incredible with its spice and crab and cream cheese filling. Finally, the evening ended with the Nutella Tiramisu with Hazelnut Creme Anglaise. Come on, now! You had me at Nutella. A moist and creamy dessert filled with all that gorgeous chocolate and hazelnut flavor. As I mentioned, this is certainly a restaurant where you can expect a hefty bill per person, but the food, the staff, the service and the quality make it worth opening the checkbook for a special occasion. We just love Bistro 31. We always have dinner there when we visit Dallas. I love the Pappardelle pasta with beef Ragu; it is soooo good. I love the freshly homemade wide pasta. The Raspberry Creme Brulet was excellent too. My daughter thought the chicken with garlic butter was exceptional. I can't say enough good things about the service. It was THE BEST! Raphael, Leo and the manager (who was formerly from Miami) were all awesome. We felt so special; they were so friendly and helpful to us, and made great recommendations for us. I like the atmosphere very much at Bistro 31 at dinnertime. The decor and menu do justice to a casual French Rivera or Parisian style bistros. I found Bistro 31 to be a little of everything, in fact, the menu was in equal parts, French, American, and Italian--perhaps with a French twist. We ordered the lamb meatballs, which were excellent. Along with the lamb meatballs, we ordered potato latkes covered in beet-colored salmon, tuna tare-tare stack, and crab cake. All the appetizers were excellent, if not, a little small portioned. The atmosphere is "energetic", almost frenetic as servers whiz past tight packed table. It leans a little on the loud side, but not as loud as the trendy restaurants which seem to strive to use furnishings and construction elements to enhance the volume and echo factors. Our server seemed a little overwhelmed with the number of tables he was assigned, but overall did a very nice job of managing his workload. We had to ask for water and bread a couple times, as he was not as attentive as he could have been. We were visited a couple times by the head waiter/manager, which was a nice touch and he pitched in when needed. Theh main courses were excellent, the branzino, fresh pastas, and steak au poivre. The mac and cheese was very underwhelming--served at room temperature and having an egg-nog flavor to it. Again, the portion sizes were underwhelming, not to the point of distraction, and on the other side of that comment, the prices are very reasonable considering the neighborhood. My party of six was out for $300, including all those appetizers, a round of cocktails, and a modestly priced bottle of Malbec. This is my first review on yelp, but I felt it necessary to write. We were having drinks at this establishment and met some nice people to the table next to us. Their friends got kicked out over some minor complaint. We invited these girls to sit with us because their friends had gotten kicked out. When the bill came they were charged for their friends stuff (which should have been charged prior to kicking them out). The manger came and yelled at them and also yelled at me because I was trying to help these girls explain the discrepancy. It was uncalled for and probably the most rude service I have ever received. I had heard a few people talk about this place so I was excited to try it out. We made a reservation for a Thursday night. We showed up at the time of our reservation and were sat about 15 minutes later. Upon sitting the waiter came over to our table and asked if we were ready to order. Since we had literally just sat down I wasn't sure what I wanted to drink. I glanced over the menu and the waiter let out a dramatic sigh like I was wasting his time. My date went a head and ordered his drink and the steamed muscles to start. I asked the waiter to recommend a cocktail that wasnt very sweet. When i got my drink, what do you know, it was sickeningly sweet. Thirty minutes went by and we finally got our appetizer. It had clearly sat for a while because it was luke warm. Our waiter came back one time to check on how the app was and to take our order. We ordered a bottle of wine and asked for a few more minutes before ordering our main courses. I noticed our waiter was paying a ton of attention to his other tables. He came up to us two times while he checked on the other tables multiple times. Thirty minutes went by and our waiter still hadn't come by our table to take our food order. He wouldn't even glance our way. I had to grab another waiter to ask him to get our waiter. When our waiter finally came by, he gave us a bit of attitude as if we were burdening him to put in an order of food for us. I ordered the sea bass and my date ordered the duck breast. The sea bass was horrible. It was incredibly salty. I tried my dates duck breast and it was ok. Not the best Ive had but it was average. After receiving our food our waiter dropped off the check. Soooo you're hinting to us that you're ready for us to leave? Thanks jerk. We still had half a bottle of wine left and full plates of food. He could have waited till we were done eating or at least asked before presenting the check. Overall I will never return. Worst experience ever! If I could give this place 0 stars, I most certainly would! Poor excuse for fine dining... I've gotten better service at fast food restaurants! Our waiter was angry looking, at best and gave us terrible service. Was seated for 15-20 minutes before evening pouring my a glass of water, and even then I had to ask for it! After ordering the food was bland, uneventful and off putting.. Ordered the beef tartare which tasted and looked like dog food with a side of stale chips. Last I've checked I'm not a pigeon... Would not be coming back for more. The lamb meatballs were dry and the chop salad was under dressed. The only thing half way decent were the brussel sprouts, but even then the flavoring wasn't anything special. Will never come back!! Would much rather go get a happy meal at McDonald's... Terrible Experience. Never got to try the food. We had a 7:30 reservation for 6 on a Saturday night. When we arrived, our table was not ready. Not a big deal, they said it would be about 15 min. 7:45 - Table still not ready, but we are still patient as we understand they are busy. They say it will be another 5-10 minutes. 8:00 - Still no table. I talk to the host and ask him how long he think. He assures me that they are setting up our table right now. I let him know that we had a 7:30 reservation and that we had an event to get to. He said not to worry they would seat us momentarily. 8:15 - Still waiting. Talked to the host and he tells me to hold on. He does not apologize and is rude. I let him know that we had a reservation and we have been waiting for 45 minutes. He said that he was setting up out table. I told him that is what he said 15 minutes ago and 30 minutes ago. 8:30 - No apology. No table. No update. I call Marquee and they say they can seat us immediately. Regret that I did not call them earlier or make the reservation their earlier. We ended up being an hour and half late for our event which we paid a lot to go to. I can not believe this place. I have never in my life been treated this way. In Dallas you get only so many shots with restaurants. I will never go back here and encourage any of my friends and clients to steer clear of this place. Told multiple people at the party the story and they will not be going or had already had a bad experience. Do not go here. Bad people. read more

Since eating at Bistro 31 on Saturday for a special event, I've been dealing with the effects of food poisoning. I'm not sure what it was specifically, but can say with 100% certainty that it was from food here. I ordered escargots, lobster bisque and the wagyu burger. The escargots were super oily. The lobster bisque was too sweet and had maybe 2 small pieces of lobster. The fries were old and stale. Another person in my party had the spaghetti that was so salty, she couldn't eat it. Instead, she ate table bread. Speaking of bread, the service was terrible. We had a party of 12 and had to ask for bread a number of times before getting any. They gave hardly any and we had to ask multiple times for more. At one point, a gentleman at the end of our party asked for more and instead of getting a fresh plate from the kitchen, the waiter (some heavy set guy) took an eaten plate from the middle of our table to give to him. Are you serious??? We even had to ask for small plates and utensils for cake a number of times before getting any, which forced people to just use their hands, clean them in cups of water and wipe them on the table linens. Food is plated way before being served (the steak tartare was EMBARRASSING)... the salmon Benedict lacked flavor and I found a hair in the hollandaise sauce lol it also lacked any real texture. I've been here twice for brunch -- went back within a week because my first experience was so fantastic. The first time was with a large group (~15 people), and our waiter (Steve, I think his name was?) was incredible. He managed everything with ease and humor. He was flawlessly attentive -- for example, unprompted, brought us two huge baguettes of bread after noticing that we had annihilated the first two small servings he had brought us. He treated us like friends, even bringing us a free sampling of a vodka he raved about after hearing us discussing hard alcohol at 10:30 am (no we don't have problems; why do you ask?). My salmon benedict was very nice, with perfectly poached eggs and hollandaise on the side as I had asked, but my husband complained that the short rib hash didn't have much flavor (I tasted it and agreed). Others in our group raved about the quiche, whereas the pancakes were not a big hit. Overall, a 4.5-star experience...close to 5, except that the food was hit-or-miss. My second brunch was with just one friend, and it brought my overall rating down. Our waiter was much less attentive in little ways. For example, despite the fact that there was bread on everyone else's tables, he did not bring us bread until we had asked (and then not until after our entrees had arrived), and he neglected our water glasses at times. He claimed the bread had been baking, but it wasn't exactly piping hot when it came out, and that still doesn't excuse the fact that he never even mentioned bread until we asked. (I love me some carbs.) Even worse, the Bistro Omlette was horrible. Rubbery and lukewarm, with the ingredients shoved inside rather than being at all blended with the eggs. I also had not been envisioning whole, barely-cooked cherry tomatoes when the menu mentioned tomatoes in the omlette. My friend had the lemon ricotta pancakes and was not super impressed with them either, much less the paltry drop of berry compote they were served with. Overall, it was a 2.5-star experience. So, I average out the two experiences with a 3-star rating and note as highlights (1) the great service I had at my first visit and (2) the French 31 cocktail, which is absolutely divine. Perhaps this is a place for cocktails only, or perhaps the dinner menu is a little stronger and less hit-or-miss. read more

First of all, I love the location and look of this place! I sat right by the windows for some people-watching (and car-watching for that matter). The tables and chairs were comfortable as well. Our waiter reminded me very much of my time in NYC because he was from there (straight forward and honest). I knew I could trust him when I asked his opinion on the fish dishes. I went with the Lemon Sole which I loved! It was a perfect portion and well-seasoned. I also had a mocha, and it was one of the best in the city (better than most restaurants versions of a mocha). I would have tried the cocktails (they looked so good), but alas, I was too full. I was able to enjoy my company without being rushed out the door like many places. Was really looking forward to eating here. I dine at Toulouse and Taverna often and have been dining in Alberto's restaurants since I was a child. We arrived at 7:00 on a Thursday night and I noticed there were a few open 4 tops. We were told there was a 45 minute wait, yet no one else was waiting. A few other groups came in after us and we waited in the very small bar area (no seating). After waiting about 15 minutes, a group of 4 walked in and were seated immediately. When I called a week earlier, I was told they did not take reservations for parties under 6 people (we were 4). Then another group was seated in a booth before us. They walked in after we did, as well. I asked the hostess when a table would be available and that maybe we had been overlooked when she admitted to me the other tables were sat before us even though we had been waiting longer and to talk with the manager. I approached him and asked why we had not been sat and he told me that the other groups had waited longer. When I told him I watched the others walk in after we had already been waiting, he told me, "they came in earlier and said they would go have a drink at Marquee and then come back." I was appaled at that response since we were having drinks in THEIR bar, not another restaurants. I was so upset that I walked back to my group. We were sat after waiting 45 minutes. Then we waited about 7 minutes for a server to come to the table. Then after we ordered, we waited for 25-30 minutes for our food. Both of us that ordered the burger medium were served a burger that was well done, almost burned. I did not want to complain again, and we were offered a free dessert for all the waiting we had to do. The fries were alright, I did not enjoy my burned burger and my friend who ordered the salmon was still hungry due to the tiny portion. To top off my experience, I was brought the wrong car at the valet. NEVER WILL RETURN! I did write a letter to corporate because having worked in the restaurant business for 7 years, I would be appalled to know that a custumer had that kind of experience in my restaurant. The only pluses were the friendly bartenders who made me a delicious bloody mary and the sweet hostess who wanted to seat us promptly. read more

I went on a roller coaster ride at this place! Decor is beautiful, and I love the comfy chairs by the windows. The host was fine, nothing notable. The initial service was a little slow but not a big deal. We each placed our order then the service was smooth from there on out. We got our appetizers, and my Tuna Tartare was FABULOUS!! At this point, I was in love with the place. Every bite was so yummy. My dining friends said the crab cakes and the soup of the day were great. Then it got to the main course...ouch...the Lobster Salad Sandwich came on gummy white bread that didn't hold up to the sandwich. The contents slipped around and fell out with each bite. It was screaming for a brioche or some type of "fancy" bread. There was a nice portion of lobster in the sandwich. Then the inside was flavorless. The only thing inside with some flavor was the tarragon aioli. On to the fries...old, lukewarm, mediocre flavor, and the dipping sauce was again, flavorless. I should have asked for tarragon aioli for dipping. This dish was a huge dissapointment. Of my dining friends: Lobster Salad Sandwich, too (did not like), Sole (said good but not great), and Chopped Salad (also used the word "flavorless" and this comes from a girl that lives for rabbit food (aka salads)--may be the first time I have seen her leave most of the salad). I think this place has a lot of potential. They need to do some work on the preparations. A few people need to sit down and really taste the food. Bistro 31 could be outstanding. I plan to try it again once I get the Lobster Salad Sandwich out of my mind. read more

Risotto! I had a great dinner at Bistro 31 with a group of girls. We sat outside on the patio. The outdoor space had a feeling of being in a different country. Think: an alley in Rome. It was so nice! I had the risotto special of the night which had salmon, scallops, asparagus, and cherry tomatoes. It was delicious!! I ate every last bite leaving nothing on the plate. Everyone at the table enjoyed their meals including snapper, lots of orders of risotto, and a few different pasta dishes. The service was great as well to round out a perfect dinner. Fois Gras Torchon - I'm a sucker for Fois Gras, but this was melt in your mouth. Four crostinis and a good portion on top of each. 2. Mussels - large mussels, wonderful sauce! Soak the accompanying crostinis in the sauce for an added bonus. 3. Chocolate Bulleit (Bourbon Cocktail) - really good (my gf thought it was too strong, but I thought it was perfect). The OK: 1. Cheese Plate - good cheeses, plenty of bread, honey, and grapes, but nothing jumped out as amazing. 2. Escargot - "A" for effort on taking a unique approach (served in a bowl with wild mushrooms over polenta), but this dish fell flat on taste (mushrooms good, escargot ok, polenta bad). 3. The wait was slightly excessive, but the general manager was very nice. The BAD: The Bottom Line - the atmosphere is very date friendly, with the perfect amount of energy and liveliness in the upstairs lounge and lower volume in the downstairs restaurant. The prices are typically Highland Park Village (slightly overpriced), but this is a perfectly passable for a Saturday night dinner and drinks affair. read more

We were shopping in Highland Park Village late one evening in from out of town and stopped in for dinner. We were pleasantly surprised with Bistro 31. The food was great and the service was too. Without a reservation we were seated at a great table. We started out with tomato soup and lobster bisque as our appetizers. Both were great. Our main dishes were the Chilean sea bass and one of the pastas. Again both dishes were great. The restaurant itself is not that big and without a good table could seem hectic with the waitstaff running around. One good thing about the restaurant too are the large windows at the front. It makes the space seem bigger than it is and gives a nice view of the shopping center. read more

This has been one of my favorite restaurants for several years. It was one of those places where any dish on the menu was expertly executed with intricate and well balanced flavors, one of the best examples of New American cuisine that could be found in Dallas. The original chef, Victor Hugo, created an incredible menu and atmosphere with the help of restaurant owner Alberto Lombardi. Since Hugo's departure, the menu, execution, and flavor palette were all reinvented in a manner that can only be described as downright detestable. There is absolutely no excuse for poor execution or flavors at this price point. The two dinners I've had there under the new regime this holiday season were some of the worst I've had in recent memory. Lombardi, a well renowned and successful restaurant operator, is an excellent businessman who continues to struggle in the gourmet / new-american space. Lombari will either need to make some drastic changes in the kitchen or settle in for a rough couple of years of decline. The convenient and beautiful location should allow Bistro 31 to do enough business to keep their doors open and continue providing mediocre fare to the patrons who don't know any better. read more
