Amazing quaint restaurant in the heart of downtown Northport. We went here to celebrate my sister's engagement in September and we sat in the outdoor courtyard in the back. It was lovely! The service was impeccable. She had great recommendations. We got the fried mozzarella and Thai calamari to start and was great. The pino Grigio was yummy. I ordered the lobster ravioli and was so so tasty. Dan got the chicken Milanese. My sister got the ahi tuna and her fiancé got the short rib. All delicious! read more

So good! Soo good! If you're wandering around Northport and are in need of delicious food for an affordable price, this is your place. Yelp led us here after drinking next door at Sand City. While they did not have any tables available on a busy Saturday evening, they did have space at the bar and we love sitting at the bar. The restaurant is dimly-lit, small, and has a romantic ambiance to it. Each booth feels like your own little oasis and the bar area is so classy you almost feel underdressed in a pair of jeans. The bartender was nice and attended to us quickly. I got the spinach ravioli topped with fresh lobster. My boyfriend had the mussels and lobster (I forget the name of the dish but it literally all comes together). My pasts was perfectly cooked, the sauce was fantastic, and the lobster was so fresh and oh so good. My boyfriend's mussels were also great and the lobster made for a fun session of cracking it open to get all the meat out. Everything we tasted was phenomenal. We polished off our plates, which is rare for us. The restrooms are clean and large enough that you're not hitting the door on the toilet. The staff is pleasant. Fellow diners are on the quiet side but we all enjoyed watching a pretty exciting game of hockey on the TV behind the bar. Unsure if they take reservations but if they do I would suggest it since this place really is that small. We will definitely be back. Here's the rundown of my night at Bistro 44: * The hostess sat my wife and I at a table. Couldn't get to where my wife was to pull out her chair because the hostess insisted on blocking my path to her as she cleared the extra place setting. * The restaurant is incredibly loud. Poor acoustics. There was a large table of very drunk patrons in the middle of the room. They were literally yelling to talk to each other. When the waiter came to take our order, he apologized for them because he had trouble hearing us and we could barely hear him. * My wife asked the hostess if we could move to the alcove at the front of the restaurant, but she claimed all the tables were put together for a large party of eight. * Stale bread served. From my vantage point, I could see into the hall leading to the kitchen. Bread lined the counter already cut and placed in baskets, which had clearly been out for hours. No wonder it was stale. * Ordered Thai Calamari. It tasted as though it was one of those frozen industrial restaurant supply house bulk orders that they fried up and threw some mildly spiced canned fruit sauce on top. I had a few bites and stopped eating it. At this point, I was trying to keep my wife's spirits up and was making excuses for the establishment. * I attempted to wash away the taste of the calamari with my chardonnay, but it was literally the worst chardonnay I've ever tasted. It only added to the horrible taste lingering on my taste buds. * My wife's risotto was a soggy mess with liquid filling about 1/4 of the bowl. * My seared tuna arrived and was cold throughout. It literally tasted as if it had been in a refrigerator and they had just taken it out, coated it with warm seasoned sesame seeds, and served it. At this point, I could no longer make any more excuses. * I went to the manager. I felt bad and told him so. I didn't want to be "that customer." I explained the situation to him, he understood, and agreed to remove the appetizer and my entree. As we spoke, I noticed a large drunk man standing nearby, glaring. I saw him earlier at the long table in the middle of the room as he sucked each of his fingers while eating some seafood. Yuck. Now he stood a few feet away glaring. I thought nothing of it, nor did I give much thought to him when he bumped into me as I passed him on my way back to the table. * When my wife and I left, she noticed that there was a table of four in the alcove and the other table was empty. We walked to the street, but my wife was curious about the table and went back in to inquire of the lead hostess. A couple of minutes later, I heard a man screaming profanities at my wife. This was literally coming through the closed door and could be heard out on the sidewalk. I rushed back in and saw the large drunk man -- who closely resembled The Skipper from Gilligan's Island -- yelling just inches from my wife's face. Naturally, I stepped between them. Then "Drunk Skipper" began some ridiculous racist taunt about "You People," except we're as white and American as can be, so we had no clue what he was rambling on about. Management actually allowed this guy to behave this way, so I wonder if he isn't the owner. Why else would he get out of his seat twice to get involved with something he had no connection to? And why else would he be allowed to bellow such bigotry? In short, Bistro 44 reminds me of one of those Kitchen Nightmare shows with Gordon Ramsay where the owners think they know how to run a restaurant, but are probably better off just cooking at home. This place is for people who don't know any better. If you like this place, you've likely never stepped foot into a restaurant with a real chef and owners who know something about fine cuisine. This isn't really a restaurant as much as it is a pseudo-private social club where the general public is allowed in. But, beware, from the moment you enter, both the patrons and staff treat unsuspecting customers like crap. They consider you an outsider where your every move is watched. I don't get it. The food here is awful. There's nothing special about the place. If the regulars want it to themselves, have at it. There's no loss to the public whatsoever. read more

Lovely restaurant located in Northport, NY. Four of us went here for dinner and got a great seat in the front of the restaurant by the window. Felt like our own private seating area and was very nice atmosphere. Each one of us ordered a different meal and will say the food was solid overall. We ordered the Chicken Milanese, sesame crusted tuna, lobster ravioli and the classic Duck L'orange. Each one of us enjoyed our meal. The service was average and food was above average. Our reservations were at 12:45 on Mother's Day. It was early, but I know this is usually the busiest day in the restaurant business. I selected Bistro 44, because of a lunch I had on the patio last Summer, which was very good. The inside of this small restaurant is very well thought out. We had a table for 2. The server took the drink orders... a large Martini and a dry Pinot Grigio. They were both perfect. There were additional specials, besides the lunch menu. We were told that we could order from the dinner menu too, however the mashed potatoes were not done. Dinner starts at 3:00 PM. Most places have a price fixed dinner for Mother's Day, which was not the case here. From the Specials, we ordered the Seaford Bisques, and I had the Marinated Skirt Steak Sandwich and my husband ordered the Lobster over Handmade Spinach Ravioli. I requested a salad rather than the fries, and the waiter brought me blue cheese to sprinkle on top. The food was tasty. The place can be a tad noisey, but we had arrived at a good time. It was nice that we did not have to rush. Since it was a special day, we topped our lunch with coffees, New York Cheesecake, and "Coffee and Cigar". Which besides being a clever idea was actually quite good. The tab came quickly after requesting it. Will be back for dinner, and also for lunch alfresco. Saturday afternoon we decided to venture out to Northport to take our out of town guest to lunch. We have been to Bistro 44 a few times throughout the years and it was always pleasurable. UNTIL now, we entered the restaurant only to be if you call it greeted by a very rude blonde-haired woman. She actually acted like it was an inconvenience to ask to be seated. We had asked if we could be seated at the table in the front window and she immediately and sharply said NO as if we were children being reprimanded without explanation and continued walking waiting for us to follow her. This woman was such an immediate turn-off that we opted to go elsewhere. Sad, You would think during this Covid situation & the state of the world -that businesses would be happy to have & welcome customers. Not such a great start to what was going to be a nice dining experience. If you're looking to be greeted by a RUDE hostess or whomever she thinks she is to set the mood or then this is the place. read more

A random drive to northport.... A random drive to Northport led me to a spot down the road from bistro 44, glancing at the menu my stomach yearned for something a bit more upscale; I was dying inside asking what my girlfriend was going to order, I couldn't help myself I rudely said get up let's go down the road, "quick." Thank goodness I did, Bistro 44 set a much better mood with outdoor seating and a tasty sounding menu. Started with lemon crusted calamari that lacked much lemony "zest" but really came through on the crisp and delicate texture. Two petite crab cakes were just that, petite; bite size in fact but, quite delicious at that. The meals would tell a different story, my chicken, although exciting on paper, was dry and bland; however the spinach and cheese ravioli with a cream sauce was packed with flavor and excited every taste bud. After years of trying, we finally made it to the Northport Theater for a show and made reservation to come to Bistro 44 based on what we saw on line and reviews we read on Yelp. We had early reservations and came in at 5:15 to a very quiet restaurant, by the time we left at 6:45, the place was packed, and there were many groups sitting out back on the patio. We were immediately greeted at the door with a welcoming smile and brought to a table in the back of the restaurant. The restaurant is covered in dark wood with a bit of an old French motif. It is a dim establishment but bright enough to be able to see your food. The busboy came to the table quickly and brought water and bread which included a plain white rustic bread, sliced along and plain Italian bread. The table is given caramelized garlic, olives and whipped butter. After the waiter brought the menu, my wife asked about the Price Fixe, which is only from 5 to 6. As it was 5:20, he then brought us that menu too. My wife opted for that dinner while I ordered off of the regular menu. She had the Onion Soup, Skirt Steak, and Molten chocolate cake, I had the Fried Calamari and Kobe Burger. Onion Soup: This was a nice rich broth and you could taste the addition of the sherry. She asked for the Gruyère gratin to be a bit more crispy and it certainly came out perfect. Fried Calamari: was a little disappointing... While it seemed to be perfectly cooked to the eye, it was not crispy and the calamari was a little chewy. Skirt State: is served with roasted garlic mashed potatoes, haricot vert and hoisin emulsion. I thought the steak was both cooked perfectly and had a very savory flavor. A nice crispy outside and tender inside. The garlic mashed potatoes were flavorful with a nice consistency. Kobe Beef and Short Rib Burger: with Stilton bleu cheese, applewood bacon, frizzled onions, shredded lettuce brioche bun and fries was O.K. I was hoping for a more savory, richly flavored burger. The short rib, and blue cheese definitely added to both the presentation and topping but to me, it never really hit the mark. There was way more bun that I cared for, so I removed it and ate the burger as a mini meat-loaf. Fries were perfectly cook and you could really taste the potato... (for real, I have eaten so many fries that are just a vehicle for salt and oil.) Warm Chocolate Lava Cake withFresh whipped cream, raspberry compote: was delicious though I must say, there was way more 'lava than cake." Through the whole dinner we were constantly visited by both the bus girl for water and the waiter to check on our meal. I was definitely happy with that attention. The pricing for the food was fair but I though that 11 and 12 dollars for a glass of Chard or Merlot was a little pricy. (I would have been happier with an 8-10) I really must say that I was completely taken back that i did not see any Long Island Wine (or any NY wine) on the menu. If I missed it, I am sorry, if it was truly not part of their wine list I am very disappointed. I would like to go back and try some other I items I saw on the menu, but it will be after I go to some of the other eateries in Northport. Once I return, I will definitely update my review and add more stars if warranted. read more

Ate here a few weeks ago and was very disappointed. They get one star for the friendly host but everything went downhill after that. I'd have to say this was one my worst dining experiences ever. First, the bread came out severely burnt and we were surprised they even served it to us but mistakes can happen, right? So we called the waiter over and showed it to him and asked for another basket. He didn't acknowledge or apologize for the clearly burnt bread, he just made a face and spun around on his heels and went back to the kitchen. WTF? Two minutes later, he returned to ask "do you just want cold bread?" No.. we just want non-burnt, edible bread. WTF?? We were already starving and would have eaten the bread had it not been completely burnt, so his insinuation was super insulting. Second, all the dishes were MEH and I'm pretty sure their food is all semi-homemade. We ordered the crab cakes, lobster over spinach ravioli, and cioppino (a seafood dish in tomato wine broth). The crab cakes were still cold in the middle and looked and tasted exactly like the ones you buy at Costco. I could have made them better. Same with the ravioli. Same with the clams, mussels, and shrimp in the cioppino. The lobster that was placed over the ravioli and the half-lobster in the cioppino were the only fresh ingredients they used. Third, while we were finishing up, they started talking about raising their menu prices in the kitchen. We were seated in a booth near the kitchen so we could hear everything they were saying. Why would you have this conversation with patrons so close by? It was so unprofessional, not to mention we already felt like we were overpaying for store-bought frozen food. By the end of our meal, especially with the dirty looks we were now getting from the other wait-staff that our waiter had clearly been complaining to, we were pretty pissed off. They need to provide customer service training for their staff and learn how to practice some discretion. Food and service were so terrible, we were tempted to skimp on the tip but decided against it and wrote this review (after years of ghosting on Yelp) instead. read more

I came here for dinner with two friends on a Thursday night. We didn't have a reservation and they were able to take us anyway. The space is super cute! There's decorative pillows in the booths, a pretty good sized bar, and really cool wallpaper. The menu is awesome. We had a hard time choosing what to order, and decided on lobster over spinach ravioli, calamari, crab cakes, tuna tartar & a butternut squash salad. The service wasn't great. We planned on sharing everything, and asked the waiter to stagger the courses. We waited a long time for bread (we got wine before we got bread), and he gave us the tuna tartar and ravioli as a first course. We had to ask multiple times for water refills, clean plates, and we asked for a second round of bread that we never received. The food highlights: the ravioli was really good, the calamari was super crunchy, but the star was the butternut squash salad. It was so, so good. The crab cakes and tuna tartar weren't that memorable. The sauv Blanc was great, but $12 a glass. Overall, great option if you're looking for something tasty, intimate & in Northport village, but I likely wouldn't go out of my way to come back here. read more

There many eateries on Main Street in Northport to choose for lunch Brunch or Dinner. I tend to lean towards the classy Bistro 44 for its cozy late 18th century ambience. The restaurant has original woodwork and a marble bar with wood molding accents throughout the dining room. Also during the warmer months, they have outdoor courtside dining. Their menu has pre-fix options along with its New American eatery offerings. We ordered muscles and calamari for appetizers and grilled salmon as an entrée. The service was very attentive and the food was very good as well. It was also a very private lunch since it was a Tuesday during a holiday shopping week. read more

Wow just wow First time trying this place and it was SO good! The hostess Gunilla was so gracious when taking our reservation which we moved twice. Once we were seated, we were greeted by our server Leo who promptly told us the the specials. We decided to be adventurous and try the escargot-something my boyfriend and I had never had before, and Wow so glad we did. It was phenomenal. We had told Leo we would be splitting our entrees and so when they arrived they were already split into 4 plates for us. How perfect. John who was the busboy was also kind and promptly filled our waters and frequently checked up on us. We had the skirt steak and lobster risotto, both which were cooked perfectly. Beautiful inside, classy tablecloth restaurant. Nice big bar, set for enjoying your meal. Martini was a good pour and made to order. (Chilled glass, I would have given another star). We were part of a group of 10 people that made a reservation on May 18th. When we called this Saturday to ensure they were prepared to welcome us, we were told that we did not have a reservation. The person who called them went with his cell phone to show the two women who work the front desk that he, in fact had called. They were totally unsympathetic to the fact they had made a mistake, simply saying they had no tables. We were with a group of 100 boaters from CT visiting for the weekend. Needless to say, we will never attempt to go back to Bistro 44. Customer service is non existent!! read more

We had lunch their on Wednesday 4/26/23 with my husband and another couple. My friend and I ordered the salmon entrée. Our husbands ordered different entrees. After we left the restaurant my friend an I became sick with and upset stomach and diarrhea. We called the restaurant and they said no one else got sick, obviously. The manager offered no apology and would not offer a credit for the meals. We have live in Northport for 35 years, and will not patronize the restaurant anymore, or recommend it to anyone. read more

She was short and dismissive when we asked for a table without a reservation (there were only two of us and the inside of the restaurant was practically empty). It wasn't even peak hours--it was around 4PM. She may have been wearing a mask, but the general distaste she had for me and my partner was obviously written all over her face. We came by yesterday for a lunch date. We sat outside since it was a gorgeous day out. I had the shrimp wrap and my husband had a different sandwich. both sandwiches were great. Decent, aside from the hair inside the butter (yikes!!! Puke!!). My mom cut into the butter and there it was. We had it taken off the table. Lunch prix fixe menu. App: baked clams, they were ok. Whole, not chopped clams, decent flavor. Entree: Salmon. A big piece of salmon. Delicious. With beets and a risotto cake. This dish was the highlight of the meal. Dessert: Apple tart. Puffed pastry with thin sliced apples, it was good. Could've used some ice cream on top! Atmosphere is nice when sitting outside in the back. Service was kinda slow, we felt like our server forgot about us a few times (the outside seating was busy, it wasn't like we were the only ones out there). Positives: The experience here was really good. Our waiter was great and very personable. The food was good. I had the lobster and crabmeat risotto, it had good amounts of lobster and crabmeat in it so it wasn't lacking. The crab cake appetizer was really good. The atmosphere and ambiance was nice. We sat in the outdoor seating in the back of the restaurant. It was nicely decorated and cozy. Negatives: Overpriced-Food wasn't worth the money. We've been to other restaurants in Long Island with similar price points and the food by far more memorable. The busboy girl came to our table a few times, not a smile on her face and did a poor job clearing the plates off the table. I was not happy with my tequila shrimp dish. $16 for 4 bland shrimp, a 1/4 cup of spinach, canned pineapple and tasteless broth made for one heck of a dull lunch. Burgers walking by looked very good. Bread was chewy but okay - came with 3 dips - oil and garlic, kalamata, and butter. Crispy Duck was crispy but I was having a hard time cutting into it - maybe too overdone? Probably. Wine was marked up probably 4/5x as much - it was okay. The bill came out to $350+ with tip and NO DESSERTS. Definitely not worth the price and I won't be back. Service: 2.5/5. Our waiter was good. However, the bus girl and boy kept forgetting things left and right and I had to repeat myself over several times. Atmosphere: 3/5. Outside was nice. Very spacious. Lacked the proper lighting to see my food though. tight squeeze going to bathroom almost had a train wreck with food! Verdict: 3/5. Food was okay, service mediocre, and atmosphere eh not bad. What a dissspointment. Rude hostess, fighting with a customer over seating. We sat at the bar and ordered food. The bartender was also waiting tables, bussing and texting. Had to ask for plates and cutlery. The Bistro tuna and oysters came out quickly and were good. The Thai calamari took 1/2 hour to come out and it was cold, chewy and just bad. I had to ask for a second drink because my empty glass went unnoticed for ages and then it wasn't even placed in front of me. Wow! Sitting here paying my $99 bill and I don't think what I got was worth $20. Three drinks and two salads... all were horrible! The margaritas were pure alcohol with no flavor and when we complained the waitress said "there's tons of juice in there." When the salad came with NO dressing and we asked for dressing the waitress said "there is dressing it's just light." And finally, when the bill came and we said we probably weren't going to come back our incredibly rude waitress said "it's not for everyone." What the hell can I of establishment is this? The moment me and my parter walked in we were met with hostility. The hostess asked if we had a reservation, which we did not. She proceeded to give out a huge sigh, and acted like we were causing an issue for her. Mind you, the restaurant only had people eating at two tables, and during the entire meal no one else was seated in the dining room. Although we were off to a bad start, the food was delightful. We ordered the tuna tar tar and clams on a half shell, for our appetizers, and we had the ravioli and burger for dinner. They were absolutely phenomenal. Our waitress was very kind and hospitable. Came here for lunch today and enjoyed their Prixe Fix Menu! Can't beat 19.99 for three courses at a bistro! I had the lentil soup which was ok, I felt it was more like a vegetable broth with lentils as opposed to a lentil soup. They didn't have any vegetarian options for the entree portion but were happy to accommodate my request for a vegetarian salad, so I had the Roasted Squash soup which was filling and delicious. I highly recommend this salad when you're in the mood for something hearty but refreshing. I finished the dinner with the warm chocolate cake for dessert which was more like chocolate mush shaped like a disc, while the texture was a bit offputting the dessert served its purpose. If there were more vegetarian options I would come back so if this isn't an issue for you I think this place offers a great value! read more

Last weekend while coming back from the Long Island farmers market (review forthcoming), we decided to have lunch and cocktails in Northport and were window shopping the menus along the main drag, when we doubled back to try Bistro 44. I'm very glad we did- it turned out to be a very enjoyable experience. Upon entering, we bumped into another couple entering at the same time. We joked about having lunch together as the host assumed we were together (having entered at the exact same time) Then someone said, "say why dont we all sit at the bar to eat" what ensued was a very nice conversation over food and drinks for possibly two full hours. The french onion soup was good but not better than anywhere else you can get on the island. But what really shined was the bistro box, a four square box of culinary delight and I recommend it highly. The help at the bar was friendly, attentive and joined our conversations very appropriately. Our fortune, so it seems, was the introduction to Rob and Karen, who lived in town and seemed to know everything there is to know-- from theater to every restaurant- it truly made for a very nice time and since we are new to the area, we appreciated getting the skinny on this great little town. The atmosphere of the restaurant was nice, not extravagant in any way but the bar runs along one wall and there are booths and tables throughout and although we didnt see them, we were told that there is limited seating outside in the back. If you pull up their website, you'll be surprised to find menus from other area restaurants---- we thought, "WHAT?"---- I dont know exactly how this works, but you can order food from other restaurants close by and it will get delivered to this restaurant!!!!! I'm not joking..... I think there is a collaboration between some of the restaurants and although it seems counter- intuitive, this is something I'm looking forward to seeing for myself on a future visit.
