We came in again and tried a couple other sandwiches. Branding Iron: Roast Beef, Bacon, Horseradish, Cheddar, and BBQ Sauce. An excellent choice if you like Roast Beef... always works well with horseradish and BBQ. and I went off menu with a build-your-own. I liked the way the Gotti sounded. So I used it as inspiration to create... A Mortadella, Salami, Hot Coppa, Provolone, Garlic Aioli, with lettuce, tomato, onion on Soft Roll. I always prefer soft rolls with 'Italian' sandwiches. The garlic aioli is nice and can see how that would work on the Gotti, but I wasn't in the mood for artichoke. I like adding Hot Coppa when I see Mortadella on a sandwich. I ordered the Gotti and was presented with thick slices of fresh sourdough heaped with mortadella, ham, salami, provolone, and marinated artichoke hearts - all glistening with oil and vinegar. Service was quick (counter service only) and the sandwich was superb. While wolfing it down, I could only think of my favorite Liz Lemonism: "I believe that all anyone really wants in this life is to sit in peace and eat a sandwich." Tucked in the tendernob on Sutter at Leavenworth is this storefront stand that captures what goes too unnoticed in San Francisco: we're a good sandwich city. 1. All the Dutch Crunch 2. It's not just the fabulous Ike's that captures this. He does it in likely the best way, but our sandwiches are all over this city -- and really a corner store or liquor store has a better dutch crunch combo than most cities try to stack up to. 3. They're always enormous. 4. They're always affordable, unless you go Kitchen Sink here but it's two sandwiches really. It's $12 but should be eaten in two sittings. They have a chicken rotisserie happening directly behind the counter. Their sandwich board is just as much square footage as their kitchen, and they offer at least 20 different special sandwiches. They're open 'til 130am. That's a strong, strategic move. Not everyone needs a burrito or a Chinatown melee. These sandwiches after a long night will knock you right out. read more

This is my favorite place to order sandwiches. I come here late night with friends, order for a lunch and pretty much any time I'm craving something that's not a salad, which is all the time I go to bite. Things you must try: the gouda good is my go-to, it's rotisserie chicken, smoked gouda and a peppercorn sauce of some kind on a Dutch crunch roll. It's literally the most melt-in-your-mouth beautiful thing that you'll ever have in your entire life. I also love the New York New York on Dutch crunch, and the firecracker with jalapenos is my boyfriend's favorite one and it's damn good. A cute blue "hole in the wall" on Sutter, Bite is an adorable late night sandwich joint. They offer many options of creative concoctions with their small selection of meats, cheeses, and extras. Salads, chips, and rotisserie chicken also supplement their mouthwatering menu. I've only stopped in Bite for their deli meats by the pound. While I wish they had Honey Roasted Turkey, the Boars Head Roasted cut is my second favorite. It's reasonably priced and delicious - definitely worth a grocery shopping visit! Ordered a country melt and a gotti but had a hard time deciding because all the combinations sounded amazing! The cashier was friendly and fast, and the sandwich maker was fast as well. There were 5 other customers in the tiny shop, and the phone kept ringing and the orders kept coming. This place is popular! The gotti had salami, mortadella and ham. The country melt had chicken, cheese and BBQ sauce- though we opted out of the BBQ sauce and added mayo and mustard instead. I totally dig the vibe of this sammy shop. It captures what I imagine Ike's used to be like before it became too big for its drrrty sauce. However, this place is a total ripoff for vegetarians. I wanted to get a cheese sandwich with avocado today and I walked out paying $10.86 for a whole wheat roll, one slice of gouda, avocado, iceberg lettuce tomato and mustard. I thought there must be a mistake because I didn't add any meat but nope, the price is fixed: $8.49 for the "make your own sandwich" PLUS a $1.40 upgrade for a small dollop of avocado. I see the owner is active here, so hopefully some of this can be taken constructively. I have severe dairy and egg sensitivities, and am eating a vegan diet as a result. Looking for a place to meet a friend for lunch I thought this place, with its excellent reviews and seemingly customizable menu of fresh ingredients, would be great. Veggie sandwich with no cheese? Score, right? I have to ask, is the bread vegan? The best they can tell me is they all come from the same bakery, so they are all made with the same ingredients, and they all have egg in them. "Even the sourdough?" Yes, all the same ingredients. Doubtful, but the consequences are too severe to take a chance on a possibly ignorant employee's answer. Ok, so salad. "Is the dressing that comes on the Tweet salad vegan?" Would you like to substitute a different dressing? "I just need to make sure I get a vegan dressing". At least at this point they bring out the gallon jug of Ken's Balsamic Vinaigrette for me to verify. Then the biggest mistake - getting the salad dressing mixed in instead of on the side. I swear there was 1/2 cup of dressing on my salad. It was the soupiest bunch of lettuce I've ever seen, a pool at the bottom - completely inedible, almost laughable. I picked some of the toppings off, but that was the best I could do. No seasoning on the artichoke hearts, mushrooms, tomatoes, or roasted red peppers. And at $10, I feel very overpriced. My friend's sandwich looked tasty. If I had been able to order one, maybe my experience would have been very different. read more

This is a hard review to write because I want to love Bite. I did love Bite. They have a stellar sandwich menu with really solid offerings to please the masses. My problem is that I keep finding long black hairs in my food! First, I found one in the bottom of one of their salads (of course after I had eaten almost the entire thing... gag.) Then, I found hairs in two separate weeks-apart sandwich orders! Maybe that doesn't gross out everyone else as much as it does me. My boyfriend still gets their sandwiches, hairs and all, but I vowed to never order there again. We will still pick up a rotisserie chicken on occasion, those are a better deal than their sandwiches anyway ($10 for a whole chicken versus $10 for a sammie). So far, no hairs in the chickens. So, it is with regret that I have to give them two stars. If you are okay with less than sanitary food prep, I recommend the Moshe Moshe or the Vinny's Bag of Doughnuts. read more

I seldom crave for sandwiches. But after tasting the "leftover specials" from the bf, I crave for a fresh one for myself without really knowing what I was eating. So I found out, the "leftover specials" was from Bite, and the sammich is called the Gouda Good. They definitely got the name right. The sandwich was really really good. So I finally got a chance to check Bite out in person, and of course I got the Gouda Good. Not surprisingly, the fresh sammich was even better than the "leftover specials", with juicy chicken meat topped with melted gouda cheese and oh-so-delicious sauce. The cheese was slightly melted, with slight crunchy edge. The sandwich was toasted in perfection. 3 words-- gobbler is bomb.com. Their gobbler has turkey, bacon, avocado, and blue cheese. The only thing that bugs me is that I always order sauce on the side and they never do! Ehhhhh. It ain't no Ike's Place! Overpriced. Bland Sandwich. TOO Much Bread. I walked up to the counter and had one worker in the back stare at me while I waited for someone to notice I was there. A decent hello would have been nice?! A stare just don't cut it! When the other worker slicing the meat finally took notice, he came to the counter dragging his feet. I'm a little frustrated. I just got a "day after" turkey sandwich. It tastes mostly like turkey, but the wrapper smells like tuna. THIS SHOULD NEVER HAPPEN. I am hoping that after a night in the fridge, out of the wrapper in a plastic container, it won't smell like tuna at all. This is my third time here. The place is very hot and I'm not certain how the employees can work in that environment. The sandwich was very flavorful and of good quality,however when I got home all the things I requested were missing. I was hungry for a dinner sandwich and Bite was there for me! This shop is pretty small but had a couple of tables to sit at and was headed by two very nice women. The menu is primarily sandwiches but they have a few salads and pastas listed. There were about 20 main sandwich combinations listed but there was an option to make your own too. We had the kukaroo (I can't remember the exact name), but it was really awesome with rotisserie chicken that you can see being made in the shop and fresh pesto. One was enough for two mildly hungry people. The Kitchen Sink also looked amazing and is probably something I'll try next time. The price was pretty reasonable for a quality sandwich in SF and for the size (ours was about $8). I haven't been to the Sandwich Spot in SF so I can't compare, but I can't imagine it being much better! Overall: If you want a solid sandwich by a local business with reasonable prices and good hours, Bite is a great place to try! Let's get this out of the way: I am not a sandwich person. I know there are people who live for anything served between two slices of bread. Not me. I never order sandwiches, never make them at home, never have and probably never will. Sandwiches are just not my thing. Except for these sandwiches. These sandwiches are TOTALLY my thing. So there I was in my hotel room at 11:30pm with hunger gnawing away at my stomach. I had the sneaking suspicion I couldn't make it until morning without eating something, and yet I didn't want to walk more than a block - and I definitely didn't want to sit down somewhere and order. Lo and behold, Bite (with all its fab reviews) was twenty steps away from my hotel. The extraordinary convenience of Bite overshadowed my initial reluctance to choose a sandwich joint (see first paragraph) and I decided to head down the street. An interesting mix of patrons and an overwhelming menu greeted me when I walked in. I love rotisserie chicken so quickly narrowed down the extensive menu (which, by the way, is WAY bigger than what's shown on their website or on Yelp) to a few options. I did my best to shout over the insistent roar of my growling stomach and ordered the Kookooroo - chicken, apples, feta, pesto on wheat. Except I wanted to try this famous Dutch crunch bread. Could I have Dutch crunch instead of wheat? Sure, says the guy at the register. Only later did I notice the "as is" asterisk next to the Kookooroo. I started mentally preparing myself for the possibility that my sandwich might come on wheat after all. Once I finally had my hot, toasty sandwich in hand, I booked it back to my hotel room. My Kookooroo smelled AMAZING and I practically hyperventilated waiting for the suuuuper slow elevator to get my sandwich and me to the right floor. I raced into my room, unwrapped my sandwich, and... Yep, wheat bread. Barely caring and consumed by hunger, I devoured the entire first half before pausing to reflect on the sandwich itself. It was divine. The best sandwich I'd ever eaten. No longer caring about Dutch crunch vs wheat, I inhaled the second half as quickly as the first. Why here? Why now? Why do I like THIS sandwich? Well, could be the quality ingredients. Could be the fun and unusual flavor combinations. Could be that it was late and I was starving... But no, I don't think that's it. My friend and I wanted something, ANYTHING, on New Year's Day, and Bite was there to save us! It's open very late, has short lines, and serves up quite very very solid sandwiches and rotisserie chicken. We had the Kookooroo sandwich, which is filled with lots of Bite's famous rotisserie chicken, pesto, some fabulous cheese, and more. It was a huge mess, but was definitely one of the better sandwiches I've had in recent times. I can't deny pesto on anything, and putting it on a sandwich makes me crave it more. The Kitchen Sink is a whole different beast, with seven types of meat and two cheeses. To be honest, it's probably more than what most of us can eat in a single meal. Individually, the seven meats were great, but stacked together I found little excitement as I tried to tame the monster. The sauce/mustard on the sandwich also resembled a light wasabi sauce, and I was slightly turned off by it. 5 stars for Kookooroo; 3 stars for Kitchen Sink Overall, I wouldn't say it's better than what I've had at Ike's, but since there's usually such a short line, it's so easy to keep coming back. read more

This place gets two stars based on convenience and decent food but that's about it. We went in on a week night around 8:00 PM and waited over a half an hour for our sandwiches while everyone arriving after us got theirs. Turns out my polish dog takes a long time to cook, would have been nice to hear that up front. Also, the sandwiches come with 'everything' (there's a list on the menu board) which includes mayo (ICK!) so you have to request to NOT have those things if you don't want them, regardless of what kind of sandwich you ordered. The guy taking the orders was beyond rude. He moseyed to the back after taking our order and left the folks behind us waiting to place an order, he was in no hurry and just really didn't seem to care. When I realized that my daughter's sandwich was going to come with all the extra 'stuff' I wanted to have him omit those items. He got really pissy and said, "it's just a sandiwch, guys" GUYS? I got the Good Gouda sandwich and it was tasty but a little dry, but nothing a little more flavor-packed sauce can't fix! So for comparison's sake here is the list of pros/cons between Bite and Ike's: BITE: pros - good sandwich to fill the need for Ike's, shorter line/wait, open pretty late, good dutch crunch that doesn't tear up the insides of my mouth cons - lack of sauce IKES: pros - better/more sauce, get a lollipop + chips with your meal, more sandwich choices and crazy mixes cons - longer lines, (farther away for me) Overall, I would say this is a good quick fix for a nice sandwich and if I'm feeling too lazy to get Ike's this will do just fine. read more

I've had the New York New York, Napa, Gouda Good, Mama Mia, Gotta, and Kitchen Sink to name a few. I can't decide what is my favorite, it depends on my mood, the weather and sometimes what I ate earlier that day. They have their own rotisserie (and sell them whole) so if in doubt go for a sandwich with chicken. There is limited outdoor seating if you can't wait to sink your teeth into the sandwich. Plenty of drinks to choose from as well. Around dinner there can be a little bit of a wait but nothing like the insanity at Ike's or even at times like at Rhea's. The sandwiches are good but expensive and the service stinks. I didn't want my sandwich toasted and apparently you have to tick this tiny box on the order form to make sure that doesn't happen. I went here last night after a cocktail party at the Fairmont. It is a short walk from the hotel in the Nob Hill region. It was open late around 130 am which gives this place extra points for catering to late birds looking for good eats after a nice time drinking with friends. I had a sandwich, the Kitchen Sink, and there was a ton of meat on it. Great sandwich. The baguette bread had great texture, the perfect balance of soft and crunchy/firm. I base great sandwiches on the quality of all elements and for some reason some people take for granted the bread, and Bite delivers on the perfect sandwich bread.
