Because of the girth of their abundant salads, the Blue Barn on Polk provided me salvation during the pandemic on more than one occasion. Sure, their price point was on the high side, but even a cursory review of the ingredients made me recognize the focus on quality was not a one-off. Riding the N-Judah MUNI line westward, I passed by this particular location often and stopped by for a quick lunch. I must've forgotten how big their salads were because I was overwhelmed by the size of the bowl for the $19.95 Thai Chicken Salad. It was quite a fresh and satisfying mix between the thin slices of chili-lime Mary's chicken, carrot, snow peas, cabbage, scallion, herb mix, peanuts, sesame seeds, crispy wonton strips, and house romaine, all tossed with peanut-sambal dressing (Photo 10). I couldn't finish it, not even close. Further illustrating my lack of common sense, I ordered the $4.25 side of French Fries which came piled in a slightly smaller bowl (Photo 9). They were tasty but a lot. I ate upstairs where I found myself in solitude. They had takeout boxes next to the utensils, so I ended up packing away most of the food in two containers. They kindly gave me a bag on the way out. First time having their BLT and loved! The addition of goat cheese and the basil aioli really elevates the simpleness of this sandwich. Love their salads as well. $30 for a salad is a bit steep though. This is once you add protein but it's still. Portion size is quite big so there's that. read more

We tried the tostada salad, with the sauce on the side that was a delight (my personal preference as a gastroenterologist would be to get more beans into these salads but might just be a mean thing. I love Blue Barn because I can get what I want with the selection they offer. Adding Mary's chopped chicken is $6.95 so an OK price point but I wish there was a little more; however, that is enough protein for a balanced diet. The staff at the Cole Valley location who take your orders are efficient and patient. This place and the one on Polk can be very loud based on the design of the interiors. The way the restaurant is set up makes my brain hurts. You order at the counter and pay. Then everything else after that is self service, meaning you pick up your order from the counter, pick up utensils, salt and pepper, napkins and then you also have to dispose everything depending on whether it's recycle, trash or compost. The cost of the meals are just as expensive as a sit down restaurant with waiters who would bring your food to your table and clean your plates after you are done. If you sit on the cushion there is no back for you to lean on. There are apparently some health violations too. Will not be back. read more

I got their truffle sandwich with some fries and omg I've never had a sandwich that tasted so truffle-y in the best way. I absolutely would get it again and the foccaccia it's served on it SO good. I decided to try the Tea Leaf salad and was sadly disappointed. All the other menu items I usually order are solid, so after seeing 100% on Uber Eats decided to try. I am not understanding the $21 price point as there is no protein . Also very difficult to eat from box if getting delivered . There are loads of nuts as well. Although I'm always tempted by their seasonal ingredients (pomegranate seeds & Brussels sprouts, I'm talkin' bout you right now), I inevitably always pick the same "fixins" in my U-Pick Salad -- cheese of some sort, either Ranch or Chipotle Agave dressing, & always always pinenuts, roasted beets, avocado, garbanzo beans, & tomatoes. I enjoyed all the different textures of the ingredients, and I was pretty full after finishing the entire salad. This salad was obviously a great deal because it was essentially 50% off. I'm not sure it's worth ordering regularly at full price though, especially because the ratio of chicken to greens wasn't so great. My partner got a sandwich and fries. The fries were surprisingly great - crispy and flavorful! But the bread used for the sandwich was low quality and disappointing. I don't recommend ordering a sandwich here. I've been to the Blue Barn in Corte Madera before, and I was happy to hear that one opened up in Cole Valley. Also, if you show your UCSF badge, you get 20% off which is super nice! I came for lunch, and it is a nice place if you need group seating. I got the tomato basil soup with a kid's chicken caesar salad and the table shared an order of fries with ketchup. We sat upstairs, which was cute and quiet. Since this is a new location, everything was really clean and the newly renovated space looked very nice. I loved the little touch of fresh cut flowers to decorate the space. The soup was a little salty for my taste, but it was creamy and the croutons and parmesan on top were a good addition. It came with a piece of herb focaccia, which was good dipped into the soup. The salad was the perfect side to go with the soup, thinly cut and fresh romaine dressed perfectly with ranch and topped with croutons, parmesan, and chicken. I was the most impressed with the fries, they were thinly cut, crispy, and perfectly salted like a better version of In-N-Out fries! These were so good, I'll definitely get them again the next time I'm here. My coworkers got the turkey sandwich, which they said was delicious. The cashier -- who laughably called herself the "manager" -- had the nerve to demand a 10% tip simply because I ordered more than eight items. I've been to the other Blue Barn locations over the years and have never heard of this made‑up rule. I've given this company more than enough business and already pay the inflated SF health mandates that supposedly support these employees, yet I spent nearly $350 today and didn't even get a basic thank you. Instead, I got attitude, entitlement, and zero professionalism. To make matters worse, there isn't a single corporate number anywhere online. Convenient for a place where the staff clearly feel free to treat customers however they want, with no accountability and no standards. If this is what Blue Barn has become, then they can keep it. Until they overhaul their employee training and fix their customer service disaster, they won't see another dollar from me. I really love the thai chicken salad, I did delivery via UberEats. The portions are large for a single person (and better be for the price) and I got an extra dressing to have for the other half. The meat portions should be increased, but tasted balanced because of the other toppings and yummy dressing. I got a ton of crunch and enjoyed the different textures.
