Had the "Philly " Steak Sandwich and it was very bad. It certainly was not authentic in any way and the meat was dry, thickly cut the wrong way, not unlike shoeleather. There were some sautéed onions and a little melted Provolone cheese. I think the person making this needs some knowledge about Philly Sandwiches. It was served with Cole Slaw, not shredded as it should be but chopped up in big hunks of green and red cabbage and carrots. The only thing good was the dressing. Well I've been needing to give this place a review for years, and I guess I better do so especially since I just came here twice in the last week. Grabbed a quick bite with my sis before a movie (Theatre and Grossmont mall are conveniently across the parking lot). I wasn't real hungry so I thot the Arugula and Beet salad sounded good. And it was perfect! Also has goat cheese, red onion, sliced almonds and cranberries, too. Yum. I like the size which isn't crazy big like a lot of specialty salads are. My sister Joy really likes the Tatonka brew so I joined her. (It's been a while, but what I used to order was the Hefeweizen.) Anyway, the Tatonka is pretty yummy. Ok I really like cool, small glasses so if there are taster size glasses I like to use them. And order another if I want more. They're just more fun, and I'm usually a 1 glass drinker, so at the most I probably would have 2 of these cute lil' thangs. Last nite w/ my friend, I was more hungry and ordered the Root Beer Glazed Ribs appetizer to go with my salad. I have to say I really liked them! I would come back for these, like I did for the Arugula Beet Salad & Tatonka Brew. The glaze was very tasty. Caramelly and had some crunchy edges, too. But I think the price should be a bit lower to match the amount of meat on the bones. And it is also an appetizer. The portion works for me, but I know it wouldn't be enough for the hub. He would need to order the dinner plate. There are many small bite plates to choose from at BJs. And lots of salads. I like that. It's a trendy menu that pairs well with drinks as well. Oh yes, one of my favorite apps is the avocado egg roll w/ a sweet tamarind dipping sauce. (But I believe that last time I ordered it a while ago, it seemed the quality wasn't as good. Hoping it was just an off time.) My good friend ordered a gluten-free pizza. So they do have some GF options. For those who like burgers and such, they have a variety of choices. It's a very popular place so be prepared to wait for a table. There is a bar area of which is always crowded. Also a nice dining area w/ table options even for big parties as needed. And there is limited outside seating. Ok so, gotta give mad props to Bryce who happened to be my server both times this last week. He is really great. Very friendly and cordial, ready to serve and help. He was on it w/ our drinks, water, ice, food,whatever. Very attentive. So BJs, he makes you look good. You better take care of him. Last visit on 6/8/19 was somewhat of a disappointment. When the avocado rolls came out, the plate and rolls looked terrible. Like things were quickly thrown onto a grubby plate w/out much care. Terrible presentation. And the avocados were mushy and obviously not fresh. Hardly any sauce... it was a mess! Better fix whatever's goin on in the kitchen, cuz that really ruined my appetite! It is obvious they weren't made fresh, probably made in the morning and sitting around all day. You can't do that with good food. And especially avocados. He seemed to have gotten lost after we placed our order. The runners got our food out reasonably, but the server was a ghost. My wife got up to ask someone to get him. The smarmy youth with too much cologne finally showed up and immediately threw the management under the bus for his poor service (we noticed servers at nearby tables having no problem seeing to their guests needs). After getting our additional drink order he ghosted us again. We had to ask another server for a box and sat and waited for the check... and waited... and waited. Came here on a Sunday morning for breakfast and to watch a little bit of football. We sat in the bar area. Food: I ordered the short stack pancakes and a side of bacon cooked soft or undercooked and Tupac had the 2 eggs with bacon and toast. He thought his breakfast was alright. For me, the pancakes were delicious. Unfortunately, the bacon was not done or cooked the way I wanted so I didn't eat it but Tupac ended up eating it. With that said, I asked our server how the kitchen prepares the bacon. I kinda knew already but had to ask. I asked if they prepare the bacon all at once and leave it in a container as people order. She responded with "Yes, that's how they prepare it." So I then said, this is the reason why I ordered it soft and undercooked because my bacon was extremely hard like jerky and covered in oil. Don't get me wrong I'm okay with the oil since it's bacon but I didn't want jerky type bacon. She did offer for them to make me another batch of bacon but I said it was not necessary that I'm done eating. The good thing is she did remove the bacon charge so kudos to her. BJ's is a chain restaurant so I'm sure I'll be returning. Beer and Bar food is always better. read more

really disappointed with the food and service at this BJs. my food and the other peoples food at the table i was sitting at came out late and cold. the food was lackluster and lacking flavor. more importantly, our server was unprofessional and rude. after not liking my food and deciding to send it back, she decided to still charge us for it even though my plate was untouched and i had informed her it wasn't good. this seemed to really upset her because she then loudly complained to any coworker within earshot and my table could hear everything she said. sad that this is an acceptable employee standard. do better !! read more

BJ's La Mesa is such a fun place to meet up and eat! The food was delicious and the ambience is relaxed, upbeat , and clean! The service was very impressive! All the workers from host to bussers, bartenders, server, staff... everyone is friendly and appears to get along well with their co-workers and happy to work there! Nothing but smiles. Sam was our server. She was friendly, personable, knew the menu, and provided excellent service! Thank you SAM, you made our dining experience 100%. My family sat in the bar area during a busy time, but the wait wasn't too bad if we had wanted a table in the dining area. You can hear (enjoy) the music in the bar area, but did not have to scream to be heard at the table. We ordered and ate the brisket burger, and Prime Rib Steak dinner. We all licked our plates clean!! A great drink menu for happy hour. The Brewhouse Blonde was a delicious beer. Of course the dinner was not complete until we had a yummy warm out of the oven cookie and topped with delicious vanilla ice cream and dripping in chocolate sauce Pizookie! Disappointed in the food and service of BJ's. The food tasted bad and the pizza didn't look good to eat as you can see in the picture. Normally there are tomatoes on the top as well, those missing and the dough wasn't fully cooked. The waiter we had kept forgetting things, checked up on us one time, and then took 10 minutes to bring the check. While I understand that it gets busy sometimes. When you have 5 people floating around the host table, there's no excuses. This is an update. So, as you can see someone from BJ'S reached out and asked me to contact them which I did twice via email. It has been almost two weeks and no reply. The poor customer service continues. read more

This review is partially for the food but mainly for our server, Alaina. My husband and I came in for a quick lunch and luckily got her as our server and she was fantastic. I felt the need to make a review about our experience because, like many others, our experiences with customer service in restaurants in this past few years have been really disappointing. It almost feels like an inconvenience to the servers that we're giving money to the establishment that signs their paychecks. To be honest, it's a bit of a deterrent but today we had exceptional service and she deserves the 5 star review. She greeted us with a smile and was so sweet and attentive. She communicated with us when items were taking longer then expected and gave great recommendations that we really enjoyed. As for the food, the California club flatbread, lemon pepper bone in wings, and Mediterranean tacos were all super tasty! The pretzel was just ok, the beer cheese it came with wasn't very good but our server got us a different cheese and it was waaay better, definitely recommend asking for that alternative. But again, the real star of the show was Alaina, in todays world, we really need more people like this working, she deserves praise for her work ethic and disposition, we will be requesting her section whenever we come from now on, even if we have to wait! read more

Big chain restaurant like the cheesecake factory or what not. I came here for lunch, they have happy hour menu for the brews and some appetizers. I love all their brewhouse beers and their selection of alcohol. I also shared a cheeseburger pizza deep dish. Weird that those are 2 of America's favorites: cheeseburger and pizza combined into one. It was pretty good, I thought they kind of cheap out on the beef/meat. There wasn't too much and it was like flakes of it, not big big clumps or anything. Their salad wraps are always a good choice as well. BJ's is a good chain restaurant. Decent service, great bar area, good selection of beers, and all types of different dishes to choose from. My BJ's Restaurant count stands at 3, with this most recent visit being number 3. Despite the fact that it was the last Friday before Christmas, and the fact that we were in a mall setting, the restaurant had a table for us surprisingly quickly. The answer to our question, "How long is the wait for 2?" was "There is no wait." Can't ask for more than that! The restaurant was pretty packed - and loud - so I was amazed that we were shown to a booth towards the back of the restaurant after less than five minutes. Our waiter was at our table within a minute, and he had our drink order back to our table within two minutes. The best part? I asked for water with lime (because I can be finicky), and when our waiter (Benjamin) came back to the table, he said that they were slicing new limes, and that he'd bring some more by in a bit. Being the cynical ass that I am, I immediately wrote that comment off as fluff, and resigned myself to having one teeny-tiny lime floating in my glass with the ice cubes. Lo and behold, not two minutes later, Benjamin comes back with a ramekin filled with lime wedges...all for me! Sometimes, it ain't so bad being wrong. =) For dinner, I ordered the Moroccan Spiced Salmon and my husband got the shrimp tacos. It was kind of a light meal for dinner, but we were planning on sharing a Pazookie for dessert, and neither of us wanted to order a heavy meal that wouldn't leave room for dessert! The food came out relatively quickly, and I must admit, though I was initially a bit disappointed by the looks of my plate, I changed my mind as I started in on it. I mean, come on - the plate is 550 calories, so it's not going to have food dripping off the edges. There were three small salmon medallions, a small scoop of couscous and steamed veggies, and a red sauce poured over it all. It smelled divine, but looked sad. But once I started eating, I realized it wasn't sad at all. There was enough food to satiate, and the flavors were surprisingly good. Though, I will say that though I could smell the cumin in the spices, I couldn't really taste it on the fish or in the sauce. I think it just got lost with all the other flavors. My husband loved his shrimp tacos. I guess it's his "go-to" dish...though I question having a "go-to" dish at a restaurant we rarely frequent. At any rate, we did end up ordering a Pazookie: the Holiday version, and boy howdy was it delicious! The flavors of the peppermint ice cream worked really well with the rich chocolate of the Pazookie batter. It wasn't too over-powering, and one dessert was perfect to share. I will say that I was surprised by the service. Benjamin was very friendly and patient, and knowledgeable about the menu. I know he must have been busy that night, but he never made me feel rushed (I couldn't decide on a dinner entree for while!), or crazy for asking questions or the things that I ordered. That goes a long way with a person like me. read more

Ordered delivery and we are far from pleased. Note that this our first, and last, eating at this location. Cold food....I will give you that because it's delivery, so not complaining there. However, pictured is a well done burger that is literally falling apart. Not only that, but it's missing the onion strings and the fries which are clearly stated on the box. The rest seemed carelessly thrown in boxes. I imagine had we dined there it might have looked presentable. Dine in or out, all restaurant patrons should be treated the same, hence the two stars. We waited for over an hour to get our food once we received our food he forgot to put in an entire order which was for our grandma. We waited another 10 minutes for her salad and he forgot her soup waited another 20 minutes still no soup so we had to stop another waitress and ask her to bring it. He also got our drink order incorrect, I'm not sure if he was new but the wait time and how he kept forgetting our order and getting it incorrect was very frustrating. This is the second time we've gotten dinner via DoorDash. The delivery service is great. First time, they sent us a grilled salmon dinner without the butter Chardonnay sauce; a plain fillet that was disappointing. I called the restaurant, trying to talk to what was probably one of the greet staff through the noise of the place. After waiting for 20 min (my dinner getting colder) for the manager, she returned to tell me to call back tomorrow. She ultimately hung up on me. So tonight, my wedge salad (see attached photo) arrived. A handful of spring mix. Very impressed with our take out meal, especially my fit salmon. Very generous portion of fish with delicious wilted spinach and couscous.
