BJ's is sort of my go to restaurant when I'm with my homies and I love their pizookie's more than any dessert, but their food is borderline mediocre. I don't really go here to get an entree nor do I come when I'm hungry but it's just a comforting place to get food with your friends. their appetizers are that SMACK, the stuffed mushrooms are the greatest thing on the menu!!! I also love the queso and artichoke dips, as they are appetizers too. their world famous pizookie's are what bring me back every time. I want to start by saying I'm in the business as a chef. It is a busy Friday evening and the bar area is packed !!!!!! Our server (Cassie) had at least 10 tables. Went to Bjs on 12-28-2022 at about 3:30. My mom ,sister, brother in law were with me for my birthday. My sister and mom ordered fish and chips, brother in law got the salmon and I got the bjs favorite pizza. The only food that we enjoyed was the salads and clam chowder soup and in law salmon. The fish and chips and pizza was COLD. We should have said something to the waiter, but myself and sister didn't want to make my mom feel bad since it was her treat and she was having a good time. It is absolutely flawless- the crust is phenomenal, veggies are fresh, the sauce is superb, and cheese is belly warming n delightful. I've been to BJ's at this location several times and the service does vary. On this occasion we had the house pizza which was actually pretty good this time. The berry hibiscus drink was awesome as it was unsweetened. The salted caramel pizookie was the best thing of the night! I have had the baked ziti which is pretty good but a little pricy for the size. I also did not care for their queso but it wasn't bad. The food was good, but the service was garbage. The people in the front who told you where you could sit were great! But once you got your server it just went downhill. At 25% capacity we waited for about 30 mins for two sandwiches and fries. She never updated us, when I got my food the fries were lukewarm and when I finally got ranch for my fries they were cold. We placed an order for delivery and a good amount of our order was missing after waiting an hour and a half for the delivery to arrive (mind you we paid for priority delivery and was notified in our app that the delivery would be delayed because our order was too large). Not only does BJs not have many vegan friendly options, the vegan pizza we ordered was not included in our order. For a large pizza with just sauce and veggies, cost almost $36 which is way more expensive than a meat pizza with additional toppings. They were not able to redelivwr the missing item and merely offered a pizza credit. The customer service here is one of the main reasons I wouldn't want to come back to this restaurant and I am letting all my friends and family know not to eat or order here as well. read more

I ordered the root beer glazed ribs with sides of tortilla soup and mashed potatoes. Starting with the tortilla soup, taste was there however temperature was not. Seemed more like a room temperature / somewhat cold. The ribs tasted good, but was really hoping for great. Too many burnt char edges and unfortunately threw the taste buds off. Tonight my lovely husband was craving a salad so we decided to stop by BJs for the very first time. The establishment at this location itself was very put together, clean and quite professional for the workers. The way they dress and address the costumer was more than satisfactory. The host and even the bartenders and bar back were very welcoming. Our server, Andre, was probably one of the nicest server I have ever met. He was patient with my husband and brother in law. He was asked multiple questions, and there was some answers he doubted himself on so he doubled checked for us. He made his rounds a few time before we settled on what we all were planning on eating that night. He was sweet and very attentive not only to our table, but the ones that he was assigned as well. Andre was well mannered and easy going at the same time and it was easy to joke with him. I like that about him, if he wasn't positive on something he would make sure for us, no matter how many times he had to run back and forth. Lets be honest, BJs close at midnight, we came rolling in around 945 or so, and it's a Sunday, one of the slower days for any restaurant. Most people would be over it by that time even if it's only a 4 hour shift. But Andre always had a smile on his face when asking us if everything was alright with our food. There was a mistake in one of our items, and I expected this because I work in a kitchen myself. To run out of items that was placed under certain orders should be address to the FOH so they understand what they should tell the costumers. Understandably, I didn't hold it against them but I did send my order back to double check. Andre was kind enough to do his job well and asked if I still wanted my food or if I just wanted to order something else, of course I still wanted my food, I just wanted to check why certain items were missing. He of course address the shift lead or one of the line cook to let them know and asked them to kindly add extra of 1 ingredient and they did. It was lovely. I apologize on my behalf for being a bit annoying by sending back my food so late at night, because well it's night time and everyone just wants to clean and leave. I appreciate both Andre and the Back of the House because it's difficult to keep a smile that late at night. Thank you Andre and Kitchen staff for an amazing night! The establishment's food was overall good, service was impeccably amazing, and the drinks were wonderful. Thank you again Andre for making our first time at BJs a place we'll visit again! Not the best experience. Dined I'm on Tuesday evening. We waited 15mins to be sat, it didn't look busy once we were inside. The waitress was nice but the support staff seemed a bit too lax in their customer service. We got the clam chowder bread bowl to share, a rare steak (we had to re-fire as it came out well the first time) and a large pizza since their shareable size wasn't available. The large pizza was half off so I didn't mind as it was cheaper anyway. I ate some pizza and asked for a to go box. Once the pizza was put away we noticed a baked plastic blue thing that melted on to the pizza pan. I remember eating a blue colored portion of my pizza (I noticed it but didn't think to stop, I just thought how weird that it blue and that it must be food coloring or something). We notified staff so they could inform the kitchen staff. The manager stopped by and seemed puzzled and took the pan away. Corporate owned and managed restaurants are pervasive in San Diego and elsewhere, and they can have a value when you seek the experience they offer. That value is usually one of consistency, of meeting expectations. You know what you will get and what you will NOT get. All I wanted was to sit quietly at a large booth in an uncrowded room, sip white wine and nibble on something familiar. No challenges or unnecessary interactions. I was intending to attend the 5:30 p.m. All Saints Day Mass at Our Lady of Grace Roman Catholic Church in El Cajon on Tuesday, so I wanted to eat at 3:30 p.m. in the area. I knew BJ's Restaurant [where I have been before] was just down Fletcher Parkway from the Church at Grossmont Center, so I decided to eat there. It was very quiet when I entered BJ's at 3:30 p.m. The cheerful hostess greeted me immediately, and led me to a large, semi-circular booth, as I had requested [there are only five such booths in the restaurant---ask for them]. I inquired of the hostess if the Happy Hour applied only to the bar, or if it also encompassed the dining room. She stated it was in the bar only, adding "but I am sure your waiter will be able to accommodate you since we are not busy". When the tall waiter arrived at the table, I inquired about Happy Hour wines and he stated "He did not have the menu and he would need "manager approval". I replied "Don't bother", since the hassle and effort was not worth it. Regardless, the regular price of the House Chardonnay at BJ's is only $6.50, which beats a Gaslamp "Happy Hour" $10.00 wine price any day. While I was looking over the menu, another waiter was in a loud personal conversation with another server which was distracting. Happily, after about five minutes of my hearing all about his life, that waiter went back to work. The WIFI works perfectly. I noted the restaurant seems fond of squeezing twosomes into tiny booths squashed against a divider, even though there were many more commodious tables available. The menu is presented in a plasticized spiral "notebook". On the cover of the menu is a photograph of a large dessert ["Salted Caramel 'Pizookie'"]. I do not like to see a photograph of a dessert on the cover of a menu from which I am ordering my meal. It makes it looks like a dessert menu. I ordered the Chicken Club Sandwich on grilled sourdough, served with French Fries, which was delivered with lightening speed. The after-dinner Irish Coffee was properly made. read more

I wanted to leave an honest review about our experience. As a disclaimer, it wasn't the best, but our whole meal was comped. Therefore, the 5 stars are a way to give my opinion while not damaging the location's status on Yelp. I have been here many times with my family for casual dinners, engagement parties, birthdays, you name it. Tonight, I brought my mom and sisters in for a late Valentine's day dinner. Our server, Brett, was great. He treated us with care and hospitality. The problem with our experience arose when my mother and I received our steaks. I requested mine be cooked medium rare and my mother requested medium. When our group's meals came out to the table, my mother and I cut into our steaks only to discover that they were both extremely rare - mine even had a purple color to it. When we brought this to Brett's attention, he apologized immediately and sent our food back to be remade. A manager on duty visited our table to explain that they were having an issue with the thickness of the steaks (this seemed to be accurate as I compared the steak to past visits). 20 minutes later, our new steaks are ready. Brett requests that we cut into them while he is there to make sure they are correct this time. We don't even have to say anything - he can immediately see that they are again rare. He apologizes again and takes them back to toss on the grill for a bit longer. he and his manager both made comments that led us to believe our entire meal would be comped ("we'll take care of everything," "you won't have to pay for any of this"). Finally after a few more minutes, my mother and I receive our dinner for the third time. They had reheated the ones we cut into in front of Brett, so from what we could see they looked done enough. While we were eating them we realized that they were still rare in the middle, however, we had already said that they looked good so we decided not to say anything. When we received our check, we were still being charged $55 for everything but the steaks. I was paying for the meal, so I was just going to take care of it and not say anything because I'm a relatively passive person in these situations. My sister was dissatisfied and went to have a conversation with the manager, who at first tried to say that everything else came out okay so would be charged as normal, but ultimately he made the decision to comp everything as he recognized we had been there two hours since being seated, didn't get to eat our meals all together, and truly had not had a $55 experience. Brett also offered us free dessert. He was very hospitable and we still left him a good tip. The main thing I want to address in this review, is that the manager on duty explained to us three different times that the problem was because they received an unusual cut of meat that was thicker than the normal product. I work in the foodservice industry at a large company, and I am in a position that requires me to travel to several different locations and occasionally hold training meetings. I have seen similar situations arise in the restaurants I work in. In these situations where we have received an unusual product from our vendor but have nothing else to serve the guests, we hold a powwow with every employee at the start of every shift to address the abnormality in the product and how we are going to handle the situation differently for the day. I feel certain that the use of a meat thermometer would have remedied this issue quite easily. At the end of the day, we love this restaurant and will continue to visit. I just feel that this situation could have been avoided with proper measures and wanted to share our experience, and hope that by sharing the experience, I can help ensure this doesn't happen to the restaurant or its guests in the future. read more

We have been faithful patrons of this place for 6 years (birthdays, christenings and recitals have all been celebrated here) , but after tonight...we will not be returning. Used the app to be placed on the waitlist. We arrived and gave hostess our name and she found us on the list. She then stated we'd be called in 5 min. "We" are my husband, 7 year old autistic son,3 year old daughter and myself. This was at 5:57 pm. At 6:01 pm, my watch goes off with a text that our table is ready. We alert the hostess #2 of this and she quickly says "it'll be just a minute". A couple is waiting and they are called past us to their table...no biggie. A party of 6 walk in and they are immediately escorted to a table. Still waiting. They are just about to seat another group and since being called and told our table was ready, we have now waited a little over 10 minutes. I then say to hostess #2 "Excuse me. Is out table ready or not?". She responds to the server that is about to take yet another group rather than me with a flippant "uh, yeah. Just go ahead and take them..." Mmmk. We are seated by a very sweet hostess who apologizes for the wait and explains there is a large party in our area. We wait another 12 minutes before the server assigned to us finally walks over and says that another server will be tending to us as she is swamped. Ok, we understand. The new server was very nice and took our orders for drinks, appetizers and entrees immediately. We asked for the kids meals to be brought out asap. 20 minutes later, our apps and drinks arrive. By 7 pm, no entrees. My children are hungry, but quietly waiting (I'm really proud of them right now). I ask our server to check on their food and she nods yes. 7:16 and still nothing. I tried to be understanding UNTIL the people that were seated behind us AFTER we received our appetizers...meaning WELL AFTER we had been seated received their entrees. Kids included. At this point, my husband had enough and decided to request the check and take our hungry children and money elsewhere. I had him ask for the manager. Surely, there was a reason for such poor service (the restaurant wasn't even packed...just our section). I took my daughter to the bathroom and when I returned, there my husband stood fuming and my son crying that people in BJ's."don't like us". Apparently there was no explanation and our food had been ready for a while (the kids had pizzas and we ordered salads...not exactly culinary feats that take much to prepare). The manager offered to serve us, but my husband declined when the manager couldn't explain why it wasn't brought out in the first place. He offered to bag it on the house and my husband said "No. Keep it." They comp'd the apps and drinks and we left having to explain what we didn't fully understand ourselves to my 7 year old au-some boy and my 3 year old baby girl. My son especially loves BJ's. Children on the spectrum generally do not cope well with changes in structure or being let down when expecting what's promised with no logical explanation. He is so sad and I am sad for him, but it was obvious that we were not given service equal to the patrons around us and we will not stand for that. We had been here once before, enjoyed ourselves and the food so decided to come back again. I am not a complainer but they need to know when something is wrong so they can fix it. As an appetizer we decided to split the Seared Ahi Salad. It came to the table split which was nice and I asked the food runner for some soy sauce to go with. He told me they did not have soy sauce, I said really, can you check please? We took bites of the salad while waiting for soy sauce for the Ahi, the salad was very good HOWEVER the Seared Ahi was still frozen!!! Really???? It tasted hard, ice still on it and extremely fishy. The Runner ended up finding some soy sauce in the back, but when he came back to the table we asked to have the manager come over to speak with us. We told her about the frozen Ahi on salad, how it was horrible and she apologized, did not charge us for salad and said they would pay special attention with the rest of our meal and that dessert would be on the house. It took quite a while for our main course to come, our server never checking on us, finally when it did come my husbands Salmon was quite good he said but the sides, rice and broccoli were ice cold. My Prime Rib Dip was ice cold, French fries were good though. Our server never came to check on us and by that time we were so hungry we ate it anyway. We ordered our dessert "to go" because we just wanted to go home after all the trouble we had, the Triple Chocolate Cookie thing and Salted Caramel one too, ice cream on the side. Too funny when I got home to see that dessert was not what I ordered at all, it was the Monkey Bread cookie thing (hard as a rock, inedible) and the Macadamia cookie. Yelp! You need a zero star option. I am currently sitting here, as I have been for almost three hours. Either the slow dining movement has made it's way to BJ's or I got punked. Either way, something in the milk ain't clean, boo boo. Came for a graduation party for about 20 and sat for over an hour before getting our entrees. And everyone still didn't get their food at nearly the same time. And once we got it? It was cold. Or the order was wrong. Ultimately, it was not of the same quality as other BJs. And, as if that's not bad enough, we walked into the middle of BJ-gate. Basically, that's the equivalent of Biggie vs. Tupac of the serving world. I hope they can work it out because their rivalry, while entertaining, interfered with a family celebration and made it awkward. And to add insult to injury, the bathroom isn't clean?! Nah. That's just nasty. Almost EVERY surface was wet. They tried to make it up to us by giving us free dessert. And guess what?! They even brought that out late. Free is too high a price at this BJ's. It was honestly absolutely delicious! The deep dish pizza was perfectly crispy and my husband loved his brisket burger. We also got boneless root beer flavored wings. As the restaurant started to get full our waitress made sure to keep up with it. She was great making sure her section was well taken care of. We are definitely going to go back to try something new. Seated on a Friday evening with 6 guests within 10 minutes. Our very friendly server, Sarah, asked for and delivered drinks within 5 minutes. Ok, you have my attention. We were ready to order dinner when the drinks arrived. She cheerfully took our orders and then went around the table to make sure she got them right. Can you say "awesome"? I knew you could. Entrees were served within 15 minutes. Not bad since we didn't order appetizers. My ribeye was spot on. Perfectly medium-rare and not too much un-trimmed fat. They were totally plain - no lettuce, no pickles, no onions and over cooked meat! Come on! I don't usually complain but I called and was told that sliders unless otherwise indicated are served plain! I don't believe that and I checked. Here the description from the menu, it's not true. I was offered no discount, no coupon or anything. I'm so disappointed in BJ's. The last couple times we've ordered the pizza from here it just seems to be thrown together. I'm not sure if it's because it's not dine in that they aren't taking as much care or pride in what they are serving. This time they got part of our order wrong. We ordered a 1/2 buffalo chicken but instead got bbq chicken. We also ordered a vegetarian and the toppings were not evenly distributed at all. It was like 1/2 the pizza was missing toppings. Also they either shrunk their large pizzas or we got mediums even though we ordered large. Well I guess this is what I get for ordering take out. Can't expect equality food or for them to get my order right. I order avocado egg rolls. My family devour them quickly and left me two. To my surprise they had a nasty soggy orange filling welp to my surprise no avocado. My sons kids meal pizza was burnt and had black stuff around it. Plus it had the tomatoes when I had asked NO tomatoes. I just assumed it's the black stuff was from the pan but still gross nonetheless. I end up calling BJ's they handle it properly but still disappointing after you think your going to sit down to a nice meal. This is the #1 reason why I don't order take out bc restaurants usually slack on these orders and today BJ's proved me right. I reviewed them 11/2017 and after my last meal there last night, I must update again. I am never eating at the Grossmont location again. This was literally the worst meal I have had in a very long time. I ended up throwing almost the entire meal away once I discovered how overdone and tasteless every item was. I ordered the steak medium rare. It came way overdone and it was literally cardboard consistency. It had no flavor even and two bites in I was done. It was so hard to chew. The asparagus I ordered was way overdone. It was beyond welted with no flavor. The cauliflower was half decent but I thought it would just be the cauliflower but it came mixed with some bean stuff which I could not eat. I picked around to eat some of that but ultimately, I had to toss it too. Perhaps the cauliflower was on me since I wasn't sure if the ingredients on the website order page list all the ingredients. My meal was supposed to be delivered at curbside. I pulled up early into one of the designated slots and waited. The young girl came out several times and never approached to ask me about my meal. Finally, as 8:30pm I was stepping out of my car and she approached and told me a price of my order. I paid online, so I knew that wasn't my order and I said as much. She then looked at the ticket and asked if I was "Grace". No, I said, not me. I already paid for my meal. She went looking for Grace to pay the eleven dollars and change. I went inside. I approached the desk and quickly was asked if I could be helped. I said, yes, I called in an order for curbside. Instead of the girl looking behind her to see if my order was there. She looked at me and said the other girl would be back to help me. Wait? What? I gave her a puzzled look at that time. Another girl approached a bit after and asked if my name was again one that it was not and I told her what my name was - Wright - she looked up my order, handed me the bag. The people at that counter are the utmost unfriendliest I have seen from staff that actually are supposed to great customers. No smiles, no hello's. No customer service decorum about them. I have had really bad food at this BJ's in the past and I stayed away for a long while. Then I went in to try again and literally wasted $21 dollars and a mealtime doing so. I was happy that I actually had the night before leftovers (I was trying not to eat, thusly BJ's) that I could actually eat that night. I probably will never go back to BJ's again. This was the last straw but if I do, it will never be at the La Mesa/Groosmont restaurant because ALL my horrible experiences with their food have been at this one. Ordered the loaded nachos with chicken and was not impressed. The cheese was hard and all clumped in the center, the chips were kinda stale and the chicken was cold. Felt like the entire meal was assembled poorly and was made super fast to be left sitting out for a long time. You would think the food would be just a little better since it took basically an hour and thirty minutes to get. And I'm not sure about some people but I like to not have to eat a combination of hard cold cheese and stale chips when I get some nachos. Just wow. read more

Manager: Shawn was very dismissive of how her staff was today! Apparently because "corporate" put the free pizzookki per table the waiter (asked to cover another shift) and the runner who was extremely condescending when we asked for a drink told us he couldn't help us and walked away!!!! The only reason I am giving this 3 stars is that our server Diego was an absolute delight, even though it was the fault of the kitchen, Diego personally ensured us fast as possible food and even gave us a free pizookie for our rocky experience, Diego is a star (it was his first day on the job) and turned this experience around for us! It's a sad day for lunch specials and vegetarians folks. This place just gave me the saddest excuse for a vegetarian quinoa. Plus the waiter could care less about it. $11.95 down the drain for about 7 soggy bites of vegetables that normally work together wonderfully. read more

For the 3rd time we have been overcharged at this particular Bj's. Unbelievable! We even tipped decently after having very so so service. Our visit literally spanned over 3 hours due to being ignored and treated not so great by the server. So we were so over it by the end we just tipped, signed, and left. To later inspect receipt and see multiple items added to our bill was infuriating! Then we went in to speak to manager the very next day. We got a quick sorry and was told they would look up receipt as refund some. There was little to no caring in the process of this restaurant finding out they have ripped off customers for the 3rd time! We are very dissatisfied with this restaurant and Urge Everyone To Closely review receipts/Bills regardless of how quickly they try to process and rush you when closing out. read more

The worst restaurant experience I have ever had in 65 years of my life. Our waitress was Sam. Did not get napkins or utensils until my granddaughter had almost competed her macaroni and cheese eating it with her hands. Unsat. Refills for our drinks, both my daughter and her friend, had to wait for a conceivably amount of time. My drink sat empty for about an hour. Never was I asked if I wanted or needed a new drink. The only upside of our dinner, the ribs were very good. I don't know if Sam is a new waitress, but she differently needs more training. We used to love coming to BJ's to eat. I will not consider it as our choice in the future. read more
