Came here once while we were having our tires done close by. I heard a lot about this place so thought why not. It has a very little town feeling once you walk in. As if this place were in Forest Grove or Hillsboro. Not complaining just my thought! Their staff was quite nice. Older waiters but they seemed to of known the frequent customers pretty well as I observed. So, I'm sure they have worked there for awhile. Their menu is pretty unique. When I got there on Friday February 3rd 2024 at about 10:20 am I asked for the steak and eggs spec for $11.99. The waitress that I can't remember her name because I seen her when I sat down and told her I wanted the special she said it's only Monday through Thursday. I took a picture to add it is actually Monday through Friday before 11 am. When I asked if she was sure she said yes Monday through Thursday. So I'm stead of stela and eggs I got the chicken fried steak breakfast. The menu says the chicken fried steak is hand breaded yet again wrong. It is a frozen chicken fried steak mislead you be hand breaded. I ate maybe a quarter of my good because it was so greasy except for the biscuits and gravy were good. My experience all around from an argumentative waitress to misleading menu to eating only a quarter of my food due to grease and still paying full price was a complete disappointment. I have eaten at other black bear diners in other states and they were fine. It was just this one in particular. That is why the one star. read more

Disappointed one of my favorite places is not good anymore. I ordered a ham & cheese omelet with has browns. Sounds simple... not so. Asked also if they had mimosas. Server said they do not serve alcohol. While waiting for our breakfast I saw a display on our table which said they serve alcoholic mimosas. Interesting. Got my meal with those country fried potatoes, which I don't like. Then the omelet had huge chunks of ham, couldn't find any cheese. Sunday, 15 August 2010, brunch-time Yeah, Genna V [see her review of BBD]! My thoughts exactly! I got the CFS and it was ginormous and delicious. I got the larger size...also came with 3 eggs, 2 pancakes [or 2 biscuits, which are also huge], and hashbrowns. So much food, it came on two plates. The waitress said to me, "think you can eat all that hungry bear?". I tried. Worth the $11.29. Even after a 52-mile bicycle ride earlier that morning, I couldn't finish it all [and I just finished the leftovers for dinner tonight]. Establishment is well-staffed. All employees are extremely friendly. Bonus(es): help yourself to coffee at the outside dispenser while you wait...no charge! And they give you pagers to let you know when your table is ready. From Maria who had 15-25 people waiting...a phone ringing, people waiting to ask a question (she was a champ)...to Valerie and her excellent service at a counter even!...Julia (who's job it is to refill all dishes...kitchen, dining room etc) and she did it with a smile...the whole time...we were there 45 minutes...she just kept smiling...To a true ring master in Leo filling at one point 9+ tickets as they kept popping up in the window. This whole crew was amazing. As for food...the gents in the kitchen are truly unsung heroes! Well done to everyone! My family and I went on a Saturday morning, although the wait was long, the service was amazing! Lynn was probably the best server I've ever had! She was absolutely amazing. We will make sure to come back for breakfast whenever we can just because of her amazing service. As far as the food goes, the portions were huge and the pancakes were some of the best I've had. Clean diner, food was ok. Staff extremely friendly! They made me feel so bad I didn't complain about the egg that was over cooked on the outside and undercooked inside, or the fact that my home style potatoes reminded me of some people I have had cook for me, undercooked with I giant helping of almost cooked onions and I don't even know if the bell peppers made it to the grill. Toast was good, except the butter was put on after it was cold, and I don't know if the creamer or the coffee was bad but one is a health issue I drank all my water though so that was good. I don't know if the cook was new, or was understaffed, but I'm guessing that was the issue but could be unfamiliar with the grill they are cooking on. Talk about a beast mode breakfast. This is my first time at Black bear diner and definitely not gonna be my last time. I highly recommend every single thing on the menu :-) this place was absolutely packed and that's saying something. By the time we left we were so dang fool that we couldn't even to go anything because we couldn't finish it the next day. The biscuits and gravy was absolutely amazing the fried chicken was good and the chicken omelette was amazing. There was a bit of a wait about 45 minutes to get our food but it was worth it at the end. I highly recommend this place. read more

Usually go here all the time but am very frustrated after their website glitched and took out over $100 that I now won't be able to use until it is back in my account whenever that happens. On top of that, I've lost over 30$ in overdraft fees because of their website. Not like I need that money or anything... Although it is a corporate chain the design is one of a Mom & Pop small timber-town breakfast cabin. It's a warm, cozy feeling and the staff are very nice. My friend and I both had the steak & eggs special. The steak was a 2 Star event, a long length of gristle made my mine less than satisfying. It was cooked perfectly and the part I could eat was okay. The 5 star winner was their Country Style Potatoes, they were the best I've had in years! The onions and peppers were a small dice and perfectly sautéed. The potatoes were a perfect size as well that allowed for maximum browning. Coffee was good. Good service and a good time. read more

We really enjoy the servers at this location. I'm getting to know them as friends. We were in last night and we were waited on by Melissa and Rick. They are so friendly and they take such good care of us, especially that Melissa. She is a treasure. I have a lot of fun with her and Rick was in a wonderful mood also. They were both running in the place cuz it was late and working hard and they did a great job taking care of us. Always mixed me want to come back especially if they're working. I've only been waiting on by David supervisor twice but he is excellent at what he does customer service and getting your portions of what you want to eat exactly correct but so was last night of course and then I have met another woman. Christa, I can't remember how to spell her name but she came from another black bear restaurant and she's an excellent also and fun to talk with and now her daughter's working there. I have waitress years ago and I think everybody should do the job at least once in their life so they can have more patience and understanding. There's a lot too waiting on tables. We came here on a busy Saturday morning and the lobby was packed with people waiting to be seated. We asked how long the wait would be and they said 20-25 min however they told us that 2 seats at the counter just opened if we wanted to be seated now. We rushed at the opportunity since we were hungry! Haha. We were immediately greeted by our waiter and he took our drink order. The environment was crazy (since it was busy) but still we enjoyed ourselves. I ordered the Bear Claw French toast and my husband ordered the Southern Scramble. My French toast was so delicious! It had filling and it was definitely more than enough for me. I made sure to order bacon as well since I knew it would be sweet. The Southern Scramble was good too (according to my husband). Got here about 10am to have breakfast with a friend and was seated right away. I ordered the bacon cakes and she ordered California eggs Benedict. She said that the coffee was great while we waited. Our waiter David brought over our drinks almost immediately after we ordered. Their OJ is fresh squeezed and delicious! The bacon cakes were HUGE and tasted amazing! It has been a while since we have been to this location. Now I remember why. My omelet came out super cold. The cheese was not even a little melted and all the omelet contents we super cold and under the eggs rather folded in the middle. The waffle was ice cold as well and super doughy like a waffle cake undercooked. The hot tea water was cold and they had the air conditioner was on and so were all the ceiling fans. Came here on a Wednesday evening. It wasnt very crowded, so the wait wasnt too bad. Our server was a friendly guy, but he seemed very rushed. I can see that he is stressed out...it is a naturally stressful position but he projected it. A lot. He rushed us through ordering and seemed to be snippy with the hostess who helped him bring out our food. However, perhaps it was a tough day, I dont know. I am rating based on food alone. Holy cow, is the food overrated. What they lack in quality they have sure made up in quantity. The portions are huge. Like super huge. My daughter's cub sized pancakes took up most of the plate! I tasted them and they were delicious! However... I got classic eggs benedict with a side of corned beef hash. It was a total miss. The eggs were over cooked, the hollandaise sauce was already drying up and the corned beef hash was bland! It was shockingly bland. I actually put salt on mine. This is by far amazing! Every single bite was tantalizing! I wanted to savior every single morsel in my mouth for moments on end. Timing was perfect in every aspect. The chairs were hard, but I completely forgot I was sitting on a hard chair with the delightful brunch I was endulging in. Lynn was our waitress and she had the most inviting demeanor. Our waitress engaged with a friendly interest in us and our order was perfect! The bill was did not reflect what we paid for as it was the best restaurant so far on this trip and extremely reasonable. I may come to Oregon just to have breakfast again!! Very Very nice structure, and you can tell they want to do it right. My biggest complaint is when someone says they have biscuits and they basically give you a big bread roll. Less is more in many occasions beef up the quality and decrease the appearance of large portions that are not as good quality. read more

Back for breakfast with my husband this morning, and we got there when they opened, bright and early at 6 am. Our previous waitress Lynn was there to greet us with her happy attitude and sweet smile. Food was fantastic, as always. Lynn kept the coffee coming and she was attentive and friendly. The food here is unbeatable, but it's waitresses like Lynn that keeps us coming back. 4/5/2018 Before I start this review, I want to put it out there that I'm a fan of BBD. I went at 9am for breakfast with my 3 granddaughters and ex daughter_law. I ordered the same thing I always order which was the volcano which comes with eggs, I informed the waitress how I wanted eggs over medium and to make sure the whites of the eggs were all the way cooked. when our meals came the whites of my eggs were done just like I asked for but, my yolks were hard also, I didn't say anything and acouple minutes later the waitress (who was a very nice older lady) asked how my eggs were, I told her horrible and she insisted she would get me some more eggs. when she returned with the eggs they were just as bad the whites of the egg were runny and not cooked thru, she was very sorry and took the eggs off my bill. to be fair everyones meal was fine, the cook just couldn't cook eggs properly read more

The food here sucks! The pancakes are like eating hot mushy pillow stuffing. The hash browns are squishy and bland. The eggs in the omelettes are unnaturally fluffy. The biscuits are more like masonry than baked good. Seriously, they are dry, salty bricks! The breakfast gravy is bland, and has a consistency not unlike snot. Even the catsup here is bad! I have been here twice and it was blah both times. Even Shari's is a step up from this place. This is probably the worst breakfast food I've had dining out. After eating at this diner I had to change the plans I made to do some shopping. The food made me come back to the hotel and lay down. When I say the food is filling, it is! Huge portions cooked how you like and pretty much everything is on the breakfast menu. While eating my breakfast I had to order a sandwich, for lunch too! Again..when my sandwich came out it was big enough for two people to eat including the fries. (I'm full right now but I'm looking forward to my turkey club). The service was perfect! It gets packed there so if you're one of those I need to sit down now and eat type of people, be patient, it's worth it. The staff moves quickly behind the counter so you know they're not just lolly gagging with your order. Or just call in your order and pick it up. Let me start by saying our waitress was wonderful, but that's about it. The menu is overpriced for less than mediocre food. I got biscuits and gravy with eggs and applewood bacon for $12. There was a very small portion of scrambled eggs that tasted like egg beaters. I can't say for sure, but they didn't taste like real eggs. There were only 2 small strips of bacon. The entire plate was really nasty biscuits with gravy that was devoid of any sausage. The biscuits didn't have a shape. It was like they mixed Bisquick and water, baked it and crumbled it onto a plate. The gravy was like flour and water with a few minuscule pieces of sausage mixed in. My partner had chopped steak and eggs with country potatoes. The chopped steak was a grilled piece of unflavored ground beef, the potatoes were bland and even the wheat toast had a strange flavor. How do you screw up toast? The orange juice was a sugary concentrate. The coffee was good, but it should be for $2.49. Again, our waitress was wonderful, but the food sucked. She was nice enough to take my breakfast off the bill. I guess I'm not the first one who didn't like this dish. I will not return. If you want a good diner-style breakfast, you're better off going down the road to Shari's. At least you can get good pie there. read more

I didn't expect more than an okay chain type breakfast restaurant. Oh boy was I wrong. I should have taken my queue from the 25 minute wait to know this was gonna be good. First of all, the service is quick paced & on point. No one just stands around here. They are all working and work well together. There isn't just one person who works your table. You have one who takes your order, someone who walks around to make sure everyone has enough coffee, someone who brings your order, people who are cleaning, setting up, squeezing orange juice (yep it's 100% fresh squeezed) and various other things. Secondly, the food is great. Special shout out to their Salsa! This is not your average pour out of a jar salsa. Great flavor & went well with our meal. Husband had a breakfast burrito. It has chorizo, jalapeños, onions, refried beans & cheddar in it. They scrambled all this together so you had a bit of each in every bite. I had the Mexican scramble & have to say it was one of my favorites. Black Olives, jalapeños, tomatoes & cheese. We both had the hash browns.
