This is my first review on Yelp. Last Saturday morning while visiting our grand children in Beaverton, we had brunch here. There was about a 35 minute wait for our party of 6. The restaurant provided free coffee for the people waiting for their tables. The food was great, the rest rooms were clean and the service was exceptional. The sole reason for this review is to give a shout out to our waitress, Lynn. She was fantastic, Some of the best service I've had The place was packed and she was very attentive to our needs. Nom nom nom nom nom.....mmmmmm 12pm breakfast on a Saturday. One of my favorite things to do on the weekend. Come here for the pancakes and eggs, then come back to see if everything else on the breakfast menu is just as good. And from my experiences there, everything is DELICIOUS. You can pretty much find anything you are craving and the portions are more than enough to fill your appetite. I like the "little less" and "little more" options for when you are not that hungry or for when you are starving. My niece brought us to the Black Bear Dinner for breakfast during our recent vacation. The chicken fried stake was outstanding! The biscuits were fresh and the gravy had plenty of flavor. My wife had the eggs benedict and it also was very good. Being from Alaska I loved the log cabin decor. Hopefully this chain will make their way north to Anchorage one day. (hint, hint). read more

How can two plates that come out at the same time to two people sitting next to each other have two completely different tasting potatoes? While mine were fine, my eating companion had potatoes that were swimming in salt. I mean, one was Fred Astaire's umbrella, one was the Morton Salt Girl. Really? Black Bear offers beary large portions of comfort food with a smile. This restaurant is most popular as a breakfast place, but also offers American-style lunches and dinners. On weekend mornings, there is typically a line out the door. They do not take reservations. The decor is log-furniture tourist-trap kitsch. I usually refuse to eat at restaurants with "Bear" in the name (you see them all around touristy areas), but in this case, I make an exception. Most of their offerings must easily have over 1,000 calories; the portions are huge and they obviously use a lot of fatty ingredients in their recipes. To their credit, they do offer more healthy breakfast selections such as 7-grain pancakes and sides of fruit. The service here has always been prompt and courteous. You get the old-fashioned diner service when sitting at the counter. In my opinion, the taste and quality of the food is very average although they do have some unique quirks. With the large menu selection (and large portions), most people will be able to find something on the menu to make them happy. It is a good choice to take a group of people that aren't overly discerning and want to keep it frugal. read more

Food Was good. This place was hopping on a Saturday morning at 10. I had the Corned Beef Hash and my date had the Hobo Omlete. Everything was pretty good. I was not a huge fan of the Biscuits, they were very dense. I am used to those at Biscuits Restaurant which are light and flaky. Over all the food was typical of any breakfast place. Was running around with the newly moved out of the house grand daughter last friday - went to get her supplies for a college class at Art Media. We finished at lunch time and of course she has no food in her new apartment. As we were discussing local spots, other than fast food, and knowing we had time constraints, the nice Art Media clerk piped up and suggested the Black Bear. Even though we arrived directly at noon, we were seated right away. Grand daughter ordered a Reuben and fries, I ordered a grilled cheese..this place is not a vegetarian haven..and opted to try their much touted potato salad. And coffee. The coffee was great. I was impressed with the quality and cheerfully complemented the waitress. We watched the fresh orange juicer being loaded up and grand daughter, who most likely hasn't had any vitamin C in her diet for months asked if she could have a glass..Of course..it's healthy dear. Apparently it tasted wonderful also as she drank it down as though it was mana of the gods. Her Reuben and my grilled cheese came out in a speedy manner-her sandwich was huge and her fries covered half the plate. I snatched a few and they were nicely done, hot and crisp-not over salted and stood on their own without the need for catsup or ranch. She could only eat half the Reuben while I demolished my grilled cheese, which was fine. I didn't care for the potato salad but then I'm not a fan of dill pickles and warm potato salad...but I ate a lot of her fries. Our service was excellent, Valerie the waitress was happy and perky and seemed to like doing her job. Service was fast and efficient and when I asked for the bill, she presented it right away, took the credit card and was right back. We got out in plenty of time to meet out 1PM appointment and were both full, with take homes for grand daughter. All in all, exactly what a person might want from a quick lunch. I'd say I'd go back, but as I mentioned they aren't really set up for vegetarians so, most likely I won't. But all you local carnivores would be happy. read more

I love this place. Their chicken and Waffles are the best. They have the sweet cream waffle which is exactly as it sounds and better and some very crispy chicken. It is also very welcoming and enjoyable. I also love the vibe. It has many wood structures with cute little bears on them which it makes being in the restaurant enjoyable while waiting. Service: Peppy. Yes, I just used the word peppy cuz that's the only way I can think to describe it. Not overly friendly or overly not friendly, but that server just plain had a bounce in her step and seemed like she was made to stay on-the-go Food: meh. I actually like their pancakes, they are like eating a dense form of angel food cake. Their country fried steak is impressive for this kind of diner. It's very tender and has a bit of flavor to it. But why anyone would say their cream gravy (they use it on the steak and the biscuits) is good, I simply do NOT understand. I have had it twice now and both times I thought it was bland and very heavy in a really weird way. If this stuff doesn't come pre-made out of a can, I just shudder to think how they are making it. It has the consistency of an opaque Jell-O pudding and the flavor of a well used football. Blech. My breakfast companion liked their coffee. My eggs were good but his came out way, way, way underdone. As in, the whites were just a big, gloppy, uncooked mess. That's unforgivable. I suggest ordering your eggs over hard instead of over easy if that's your thing, unless you like uncooked egg whites. I like the decor and the wacky, over the top bear theme. I'm not gonna lie, this is becoming a staple day-after-party breakfast place. Just enough greasy spoon action to make you comfortable, but the ingredients are quality and you are left way satisfied for decent prices. I have only come here for breakfast, so I can't comment on later-day offerings, but I have never left disappointed. If I'm feeling like something reasonable, I'll go for a two-egg combo with some sausage. Mmm, they sausage is good. If I'm feeling like comfort food, I'll go chicken fried steak and eggs. I can feel my heart slowing with every bite, but I power through, because man, what a way to go. I've had benedicts there, great hollandaise sauce and well-stacked; they're not going to self-destruct half way through. My only beef, if there is one, would be the hashbrowns: they try to do something novel with the way they slice them up, but they don't cook up crispy enough the way I'd prefer it. Whatevs, I'll eat it. Secret: my friend always orders the Bigfoot, which is a harrowing expanse of chicken fried steak (I'd estimate it at about a square foot of breaded beef), which comes with two mountainous biscuits. That is way too much biscuit for one poor guy to eat. I order my meal with a side of gravy, he hands off one of his behemoth baked goods, and Bam! side o' biscuits and gravy. My friend and I went here for the first time today and we will NEVER go back! We sat at a table for almost 20 mins before someone came and asked if we'd been helped and they weren't even busy. We were finally able to order and 20 mins later we watched our food sit at the window for 15 mins before it was brought to us cold. On top of that, we didn't even realize until later that evening that we were severely overcharged paying almost $26 each for eggs Benedict! I was visiting some relatives with little ones and this was their pick for a meet-up breakfast last Saturday. While I wasn't sure what to expect, I gotta admit that it was a lot better than I anticipated. It was packed at 10 am on a Saturday and they won't seat your party until they're all together; which I can appreciate. Our party of 6 + 2 high chairs didn't wait long...maybe 5 minutes (which is awesome). Our server was well-seasoned, attentive and friendly. She knew how to handle an active 2 year old and was quick to deliver his drinks/food, so I could definitely appreciate that. I ordered a classic breakfast: 2 eggs over medium, bacon and the 7-grain pancakes. I was pleased with all my choices; bacon was smoky, meaty and not too greasy; pancakes were hearty and fluffy; egg whites cooked. I envied my cousin's biscuits and hash browns on nearby plates; one had a ham steak the size of his head, and that's sayin' a lot. Overall, for a diner-style meal, I thought this breakfast was well worth the $60 it cost for 6 adults and 2 kids. I'll quit scoffing now when I see one on a cross-country drive. :) read more

They are a small chain restaurant that does Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner options. I've never done the Lunch or Dinner time-frame, have always ended up doing breakfast. I learned fast that it was best to get the "Little bit of Breakfast" size portion rather than the normal size. The portion sizes are big enough for 2 people to share. I generally would get the 2 eggs combo any style with Ham, Hashbrowns, and toast. However, those that I have had breakfast with have had great success with the Veggie Omelet and also the Eggs Benedict. We all have left happy and content with the service and the quality of the food. They can be rather busy on the weekends. read more

Came in here for Saturday brunch. Parking is always full, but I always manage to find a spot. Every time I walk into this place, it's crowded. The wait is at least 30 minutes (I went at the 10:30 am time slot). Their waiting area has limited space for sitting, so expect to stand the whole time. The cleanliness of the tables are average. you cannot really expect spotless seating areas where there is boat load of people waiting. a majority of the food is of average quality but does not justify the long wait. I did have a New York steak, which was good. but i would suggest staying away from the pot roast because it has no flavor. Overall, this place is OK. Expect a long wait time for OK food. read more

I really don't get the negative reviews. The food here is pretty good as diners go,and much better then the major national chains. It's not a five star restaurant but it doesn't have to be. It's a small regional chain that's atmosphere and service like your local mom and pop restaurant. Be respectful of the wait staff and you'll get it back. Place can get pretty busy during the breakfast hours. They do open at 6am for those who want an early bird breakfast or are going on a trip and leaving early in the morning and want a nice breakfast to fill them on that ride to wherever it is they are going to.... I haven't had their dinners in a while, but I have had their two egg breakfast and that's pretty good. I love the red potatoes as I have them instead of the hash browns. Chopped potatoes with onion and bell pepper with a little bit of crispy edges. Eggs and bacon (or sausage) toast and fresh squeezed orange juice? All for $8.99? You have your self a meal. While it's not the largest meal on there, it is your standard size and priced competitively. one suggestion I have, and this isn't necessary aimed at the Beaverton location, but as the company as a whole is make your own jam/jelly and when a customer orders toast, English muffin or a biscuit serve it to them in a small cup on the side. (Don't put it on the table) I think making your own jam or jelly and serving it to customers when they order a comparable meal item would really go in line with your food. read more

Massive amount of food! I went there hungry and finished one plate of California omellett with five slices of sour dough toast and hash brown. As it is well known for the home style cooking, I thought I could fix one of the California omellette myself :) - The taste was not surprising, it's just what you could imagine out of an omellette. Great place for the kiddos. Actually my wife and I first came here alone. It was our night without the kid, and I decided to try somewhere new. It was a nice casual place even for a nice dinner with my wife. When I told a judge that we went there because we didn't have the kid, she laughed at me. A native of Beaverton she joked that the Black Bear Diner is a place you go to BECAUSE you have kids. So a couple months later we finally took the Jeffy and it was good. Jeffy had fun, but he seemed to want my french fries more than his waffle... There were lots of families with kiddos there so you really don't have to worry about the screamers earning that title. They aren't the only ones. Even if you're just looking for a casual night without the kids it works quite well. This place is as great on the inside as it looks fun on the outside! The food is tasty and reasonable, the menu ginormous and diverse, and the atmosphere is warm and welcoming. My personal goal is to try everything on the menu once...that should keep me busy for a time! On an aside, the last time I was there was valentine's day before the rush, I had just split up with my guy and was not very happy as I sat alone with my comfort food. The wait staff was very pleasant until I paid, at that point she didn't become very pleasant, she came back picked up my creditcard slip and walked away. She was not good about refilling our drinks either. Tonight I had the meatloaf and it tasted good but it was dry, and the vegetables were way overcooked, you wouldn't even need to put it in a blender to make a soup, which also goes for saying that the water all over my plate was unappetizing as one could imagine when you don't strain your boiled vegetables. As for the non-pancake meals I've had there, the omelette was not remarkable, the bacon was chewy and overcooked, and the coffee only slightly above average. Recently moved to Beaverton, I must say this is my favorite diner ever. The service was amazing, our first waitress' shift ended in the middle, she brought our new waitress said goodbye and introduce the new one. Not many place do that! We had 3 adults and 6 kids at our table. Both waitresses treated all the kids with respect and gave them sprinkles on their hot cocoa. We were brought amazingly fresh biscuits/muffins. I ordered the pot roast & LOVED IT! My boyfriend had the ribs and sausage. He & I LOVED it also... we will definitely be back.
