This is my first time to have Black Bear Diner. We got seated right away our order was taken right away. Everything look good when we received our food and started eating then my husband started eating his hash browns and pulls up a long blonde hair. Gross. Lost my appetite right away. I called our server over and told her what we found. She took the plate no apology NOTHING. She came back three minutes later and told us that they were making another plate still no apology. I told her we did not want it and she said well we could take it to go. All I wanted was acknowledgement and an apology but I didn't get it. read more

Waitress Not very friendly, Took our order and we waited awhile before the food arrived. didnt come by to see if it was ok, had to flag her down to get my drink re-filled and watched her ignore my request and do something else behind the counter. Asked another passing waitress and like the first, ignored my request and didnt come back. Black bear dinner there is a lot of things to say about it, some may be good, but darn there are a heck ton of bad ones for it too. For starters when i came here with my sister i ordered some pancakes and eggs, and she ordered a milkshake, When the meal came out i was shocked to see that the eggs looked like the eggs you would get if you go to a bad summer camp. But i was hungry so i took one little bite out of the eggs and that is when the gaging began, I almost found it to be the most repulsive thing i ever eat in my life and i eat a chocolate cover bug for god sake. I would never recommend this diner in my life and on top of that a Dennys used to be there and people told me it's one step above Dennys well it's not it one step below Dennys. read more

Another great lunch here! This is a great lunch spot, the booths are comfortable our waitress, Danielle was fantastic and the food was delicious. I had the taco salad and my friend has the Asian salad. Both are always huge and so tasty! Seriously, I've eaten at so many Danville restaurants and this is the very best place. I am a huge Black Bear Diner fan, so when I found out there was one right down the street from my work I thought why not? I must say I wasn't impressed with the atmosphere or service at all. My husband and I weren't happily greeted upon entering. Then we were quietly seated by whom I presume to be the manager (he didn't even mention his name). Menus were handed to us and we were told that Mike will be right with us. Mike was no where to be found. Hubs and I sat waiting for someone to take our drink order, when the guy who sat us awkwardly comes over to ask what we would like to drink while we wait for Mike. Uh...seriously?! We place our drink orders and well....wait for Mike. Our drinks are delivered by once again the guy who sat us. At which points hubs and I had contemplated leaving. We noticed a server near our table dropping food at another table. We over heard that their order was incorrect, where the server picks the plate of food back up and realized he had delivered it to the wrong table. Instead of taking the plate back to the kitchen, he drops it at the correct table. The lady who had just watched her plate sat down in front of someone else before it was delivered to her seemed so appalled. Can't say I blame her. Then we witnessed the server make another yet another mistake with the 1st table. He even tried to argue with the customer about what he actually ordered from what he wants! At this point I am just shocked! I used to work retail as a department manager and in no way shape or form was this great customer service. What happened to, the customer is always right? Anywho, hubs and I are still waiting for Mike to show his face. Low and behold, wouldn't you know that the same server we had seen tell this customer that he ordered wrong was in fact our server Mike! Oh my...aren't we lucky? Mike walks over and doesn't even introduce himself, or ask how we are today...you know simple customer service stuff like that. He blatantly asks "Are you ready to order". Needless to say we placed our orders and tried not to bug the guy. Not sure if he's having a bad day or what. I still say that's no excuse for shitty customer service. At one point hubs wanted a glass of water and it seems like Mike was avoiding us. A bus boy was cleaning a near by table when he smiled at us and asked how we are doing today. So we asked the bus boy for the glass of water, which he brought back with a smile on his face. He even brought us boxes for our food without us asking!!! He went above and beyond. I hate to say it, but I won't be back. I think the poor customer service is a reflection of management. I will say hooray for the bus boy, he made our experience a little nicer. read more

I've been to acouple of black bears in Arizona and California but surprisingly, even though it's new, it wasn't the best. The food was on the okay side, the waiters were awesome but I think because it was new, I felt like they lacked attention to their customers. read more

Service was fine, but the food was bad. Two of our party ordered chicken fried steak, which was served cold, the gravy was congealed on top of the steak in a gross, solid way & the potatoes were cold -- yuk! My ham & cheese omelet was also cold. We all got the big buttermilk biscuits, which are usually a fav, but these were baked so hard & dry, we were all just so disappointed, we threw them out. Finally, in the ladies' room, one toilet was leaking & there was water all over the floor. Unfortunately, we didn't notice that until my sister's purse got soaked. Afterwards, we told the staff there was an issue. They said they already knew it! Nothing had been done to remedy it, nor were there signs to warn of the problem! I absolutely love black bear diner I've gone to the Danville location for years now. Today was the absolute worst customer service I have ever received I didn't get her name but it's the 2nd time she has just been absolutely RUDE!!! The 1st time I asked her for extra syrup and when she bagged it up I asked for salsa and she had a outburst of ' phffft why didn't you tell me when you asked for syrup... I was completely blown away with her lack of self control but I let it slide just forgot about it. Today I went in and picked up my usual breakfast. And asked for salsa and sour cream she instantly gave attitude and said very rudely that they are on limited menu and salsa was not available.. I said ok what about the sour cream ? She replies because of limited menu there will be a charge on sour cream wich I have always gotten sour cream and salsa for free I mean I just paid $16 for my breakfast. I said fine i guess i wont get sour cream then and also told her she really didn't have to be so rude then went to leave then this lady has the nerve as I'm walking out the door to say very loud that no business gives away free food and what do I expect... extremely unprofessional!!!!! I then came back in to return the food because I dont want to do business with anyone who would just be so rude to a customer she then said shes not in a position to do a return and the manager isn't there.... wow... I swear her incompetence knows no bounds. Then I have to ask her again to speak with who ever is in charge she proceeded to go to the back then I hear her on the phone with the manager skipping over what really went on and tell the manager that the reason I want my money back was because of the sour cream and that was not the truth!!! This is the worst Black Bear Diner I have ever been to. Portions are smaller than the one in Pleasanton and Concord. Service was really slow too. 4 people in our party on Saturday afternoon and they were not really busy. The first person in our party got there food in a reasonable amount of time but the 2nd, 3rd and 4th person all came much later. It was like they were waiting for the 1st person to finish their food before they would bring out the next persons meal. The last person in our party didn't get their meal for 20 minutes after the first person got their's. We all ordered breakfast omlettes so it couldn't have been that hard to make. i have been waiting weeks no months for this place to open. Planned my visit to avoid the crowds on the weekend and opening days. Went on a Monday morning at 7am. There were maybe 5 booths with customers. The breakfast came out and the hash browns were cold. Not just cold but more like not cooked from the freezer. A couple of more people came in and I lost my waitress. Had to find someone for a water refill, never saw the bill until I went to the register to pay. Won't be going back to this location. We were excited to learn there was one here in Danville, but this franchisee is in way over their head. We were in tonight, and while they've done an OK job with the decor and have the standard BBD menu and portions, the food quality was subpar and the service, while attentive, was not professional. It wasn't just us ... several parties around us were having issues too. It's like someone who knows nothing about the restaurant business bought themselves a restaurant. Fortunately, there is a Black Bear Diner in Pleasanton which is well run with very good food. But this location is not what you expect from Black Bear. read more

I chose Black Bear fro my birthday dinner because I had been so excited for it to open. We dined in on a Sunday night, Nov. 15th, about 7 days after their grand opening (I hear there was a soft opening as well a few days before that). We had a party of 8 and were seated in the back room. First, starting with ordering the drinks, we were informed that they did not have beer or white wine because those were sold out on the first couple of days. Then, when we went to order our food, I wanted the hot turkey sandwich on sourdough, however they were out of sourdough bread so I had to go with he turkey plate. We received our food, four out of eight of us ordered the turkey plate. The food arrived in a timely manner, however my turkey could have been hotter. Everyone else's turkey plate had gravy on the mashed potatoes and turkey, but when my mom's came out it had gravy on only the mashed potatoes. Throughout the whole meal it felt as if we were forgotten about and had to flag someone down if we needed anything. Our water was filled up once, after us having to ask, after initially getting our drinks which is very frustrating because we were all thirsty. We ordered dessert because it was my birthday and in doing that they were also out of more ingredients; the Sundae (which is pictured as two scoops of ice cream, chocolate syrup, whip cream, a cherry, and peanuts) was only able to me made with the whip cream and syrup because they were out of peanuts and cherries. Our waiter spent most of his time at his one other table in our room, then at the other table(s) he had in the front room. Our meal in all from start took about an hour and 45 minutes. I hope they will get better about finding the most efficient way to serve their customers. We could have had about and hour meal but it was extended due to the fact that we were not served efficiently. I know from experience that opening a new restaurant and finding what works is not easy, but I would expect that since there are many black bear locations, people from other close by locations can train the Danville staff to be more efficient and care for their customers. I hope to come back soon and see some changes because this can be a really great addition to the restaurant choices in Danville. read more

I used to enjoy coming here. I really did. The service is usually great and I love the country themed decor which is more enjoyable to look at than the blandness at Dennys or IHOP. My favorite meal to eat used to be to get four slices of bacon, eggs, hash browns, and a pancake. Back when they first opened I would have given this place 4 stars, but lately they've been on a downhill slide and their other locations aren't doing much better (Pleasanton) either. I had what I believe will be my last meal here a few days ago because the food just keeps getting worse and worse to the point of almost being inedible. I asked for extra crispy bacon and what I got instead was a soggy mess of salty fat. The eggs were scrambled properly but ice cold. The hash browns were not cooked all the way through and the pancakes were doughy. Absolutely nothing to like about this meal except for the orange juice and friendly customer service. I could be forgiving if this was a one-off bad experience but this is the 4th or 5th time in a row I've been disappointed in my food here. I'd say avoid this place and go somewhere else. If they're still in business within a year or two maybe try their food again. read more

We always come to this location for breakfast and love it everytime. The service and food are always great. This past time we came for breakfast, Greg was our server and he was great; very attentive. I do however have a complaint about one of the other servers, (I think her name was Kate?) A table sat, Our server went to go introduce himself to the table, and Katie came back with the tables drinks. She yelled at him in front of us and another table, complaining how that was supposed to be her table. Apparently there was a mix up, But it was quite embarrassing to see how unprofessional she was in front of everybody, and how rude she was to the other staff member. read more

Had a terrible experience here! We like going to the BBD in Walnut Creek and were so excited for this location to open. We thought maybe we should have given them a few months to work out any kinks, but our excitement got the best of us and we came a week after opening. There were 6 of us. We put our name in; the wait was not supposed to be long. We waited almost 30 minutes and saw several parties come in after us, both small and large parties, and get seated first. The hostess soon realized that she had accidentally skipped us. No apology, just an "ooops" from her. We sat down and waited for quite a while more. I will say that, when our waiter did finally come, he was very nice and friendly. He took our meal order and our drink order and brought the drinks out quickly. While wating, two girls were bussing and resetting the table next to us and were chatting loudly. One of them was venting about having to do things that are "So not [her] job." When our food came out, it was a disaster. My daughter got 2 sausage instead of 2 bacon...okay, that is an easy fix. But my dish had gotten lost somehow. It was on the ticket, but wasn't made and had to be rushed. Also ALL of our poached eggs were hard boiled. Every single one at the table had grossly overcooked eggs. The waiter offered to bring us new ones and 2 of us accepted. What he brought us as a replacement was an undercooked slimy mess. I wasn't planning on drinking my eggs either :-( We all had hash browns that were not just undercooked, but plain cold and raw in the middle. Most of us had bacon that wasn't cooked through either. Biscuits, gravy and sausage were all cold too. It was gross. We were sad. The waiter was apologetic, but nothing was really fixed as far as the poorly cooked food. Thank goodness for the one person who ordered an edible chicken fried steak because he ended up sharing with all of us. Pancakes were ok too. Upon paying, the hostess asked how breakfast was. My parents shared their disappointment and the girl said nothing at all. Not a word of apology. She just looked at them blankly and then started chatting with a fellow employee next to her, while she finished processing payment. It was pretty unreal. We weren't expecting anything fancy here. We get that it's a chain and a diner. But I would think that we could have at least gotten food that was actually cooked. We have never had this happen that the Walnut Creek location. We might give it one more try in a few months, but I'm not 100% sure that it would be worth it. There are better places to spend our time and money. read more

They looked to be packed but our wait time was remarkably short, our order taken as soon as we decided on it, and our meal arrived quickly and perfectly prepared. I'll keep it short and simple. First experience: very happy, good food, good service. Second experience: short wait to get seated, long wait for waiter to great us, even longer to get water, even longer to get food, and you could tell it had been sitting, pancakes completely soggy and cold, and outside of scrambled eggs had turned dark yellow. Third time: same complaints as the first, but on top of that they couldn't keep water full. And when we finally asked, the dude forgot. A different waitress walked by, asked if we needed water, we said yes, and I guess there was a pitcher literally ten feet away cause she disappeared behind me and reappeared with the water literally 4 seconds later, so what was the problem? Also it was pouring rain outside and we were sitting in that back room, and the air conditioning turned on, and it was blasting so loud you could hear it over the ruckus of a full restaurant. Ten people asked them to turn it off because within 3 minutes it was freezing. Over all bad experiences. Biggest complaint is the cold food though. Service was friendly, food was good. A perfect place for a night out with the family. This is just the second time at this location. The first time we witnessed the manager chewing out a waitress. This second trip, we got that waitress and now understand. We will never sit in Martha's section again. We waited over 30 minutes for her to take our order, she completely ignored us. Fortunately, Matt noticed and stepped in. My family of 3 decided to try the new BBD last night for dinner around 7PM. I've been to BBD in Tracy and Walnut Creek a number of times and this new location in Danville does not live up to the BBD name. I thought at first that maybe it was because it was new so service was slow - we didn't get our drinks for almost 20 minutes as we were told that the OJ machine was being cleaned. However, things kept going down hill. We ordered a small chicken noodle soup and a salad to start and both arrived at the time our entrees did. My chicken noodle soup tasted and looked like Campbell's soup. My boyfriend ordered the meatloaf, but the weird thing was that the meatloaf had brown gravy and his mashed potatoes had country gravy - should have both been with brown gravy. I ordered two eggs w/bacon, english muffin and hash browns. For starters, I only got one egg - per the waiter, he cited that he was trying to save me money and ordered me the cheaper item (1 egg breakfast)?? That did not make any sense. Secondly the toast was not near being toasted. It appeared to have been microwaved and butter slapped on it, it was so soggy. I was given my second egg and tosted muffin. The hash browns were not crispy at all on top and I was only given two pieces of soggy bacon, not the usual BBD portions. The restuarant looked okay, the entry was super slippery or greasy - couldn't tell. The ladies restroom sink was not draining and a pool of water was backed up in the sink - already? When I went to pull the door handle to exit the restroom, it seemed that the metal plate on the handle was already pealing away form the door - all this to say that the restaurant appears to have been cheaply and quickly done. We may give it another try in the distant future, hopefully by than staff will get their act together on service and food quality. Definitely not what I'm used to for BBD. read more

Came there for their soft opening so i don't know if there has been recent changes. first i am glad that there is a diner to be had in the area. Missing Denny's and those horrible late night meet ups. Came in after lunch rush and surprised to see the parking lot mostly filled. Let me just say I am a fan of blackbear when you are in the mood. Be prepared to hate yourself after your meal. So unhealthy and so many calories and on top of that so much fat. Stick to their breakfest and you should be ok. Anything else is going to ruin your gains for the month. I came in to order the reuben to go and decided to pay first because i was in a rush and had to take care of things. I came back and there was a line about 5 people deep. The lady behind the counter spotted me and told the customer to hold on and that she had to give me my order. +1 for spotting me and +1 for bringing ketchup in the bag. -.5 for having the container upside down. and -1 for the size of the reuben . Ive had their burgers mainly and breakfast items and so i was expecting to see a HUGE sandwich. i think it was 11.99 or 12.99; anyways i was able to eat half my sandwich in 3 bites...not cool. And for the price it better be a fattie. I can go to some sandwich delicatessen and get a great sandwich for less. i had skipped lunch and was looking for a meal to fill me up and put me in a food coma. Nope didnt happen. +1 for the fries though. They were fried well! I love Black Bear Diner! I am so glad they opened this location in Danville. We came for a family dinner out on a Friday night. The restaurant was very busy but they turned tables quickly and the wait was relatively short. The service was great and the food came out fast. The kids meals are very reasonably priced and come with an ice cream sundae (free after 11am)! They also have delicious desserts and the lava cake was to die for! We will definitely be regulars here! read more

We arrived at Black around 10 am for breakfast. This was our 4th time eating here. Each time they seem to be improving tremendously. Especially our service. Our waiter was Edward he welcomed us with a warm smile. It was my mothers first time at a Black Bear Diner and he told us what to expect and was extremely knowledgeable and and personable . Our order came out perfect . My Hobo omelette was amazing and my hash Browns came out crispy like I asked. All our meals were hot and fresh. We were amazed on how the servers were helping eachother . Especially our waiter. We seen him remove plates and refill coffee on other tables that appeared to be another waitresses. I will recommend them to all my friends and family. I have to give a shout-out to my new neighborhood diner! I was a bit disappointed that Denny's moved out, because when there's a need for salty, huge breakfast portions, that place fit the bill. But after waiting MONTHS, Black Bear signed on & eventually arrived, and I am glad it did. I have been here several times: the bacon benedict breakfast is supper yummy - portions are generous, eggs done just right, and I love, love the home fries. They do a great job on those, and this is super important in breakfast, isn't it? The wife had pancakes - she loved them. On several occasions, I got the California burger to go - that is a treat - succulent burger cooked right, with tasty avocado and other toppings! I just love their French fries too. Because I keep getting the same delicious burger - I cannot comment on the other menu items, lol. But if the Cali burger is any indication, then I am optimistic. One of these days, I will try a different burger or a sandwich. They seem to have their act together with wait staff and order taking at the counter. Maybe there were some bumps early on, but all is good now. Also, Black Bear is nice and clean! Note: it gets BUSY here during prime weekend hours, and some weekdays as well. Plan accordingly! Final: this is a DINER, not a fancy restaurant. If you want something finer, go across the street or to Hartz - and pay triple.
