I enjoyed my first experience at Black Bear. It was busy when we arrived but we were able to be seated within 15 minutes as a party of 5. We all enjoyed our fresh squeezed juices. That was definitely a highlight of the menu! I personally ordered the Shasta Veggie Scramble. It was just okay. It lacked seasoning/flavor but the rest of my party thoroughly enjoyed their selections and for that reason, we will be back! Our waitress was so kind and checked on us throughout our meal. Thanks for a great first experience.

Well it has been 5-6 years since we left Ca and black bear diner Today Pedro took excellent care of Coffee from Nicaragua I had the massive chicken fry steak with 3 eggs over easy Massive biscuits and gravy Extra large shredded taters Totally delicious Son in law had chicken and waffles with a tanker full of syrup- he ate it all !! Today I went to work out, and afterwards I made a decision to go to Black Bear Diner to eat. This is my second time coming in. I'm at one something that was hard, healthy nutritious and also have some protein in it and on the menu I see where they had a cob chicken salad, see picture above, and the salad was very good and fresh bags were tasty. The tomatoes were very good but onions were real good bacon was real crispy and the chicken was cooked just right I just wanna say thank you once again staff and management at Black Bear Diner. You may this experience wonderful.Amaya was my waitress and she did a great job. She was very attentive. She came back and checked and I appreciate that very much

I started outside. I enjoyed the design of this place! It definitely has its own thing going and makes you feel like you are in a diner in the mountains. Lots of real wood logs around the trim and furniture. It was very simple and made you feel like you were at your grandparents house eating breakfast. I got the Creamy Vanilla Iced Cold Brew and it was average. It got the job done, but didn't blow my socks off. I didn't expect them to specialize in coffee anyways so I'm not upset. Lastly, the food was great! I ordered Joe's Hobo Omelette & I was pleasantly surprised by the portions! They were massive! Shoutout to my server, Brianna! She was on top of it and very friendly. I'll definitely be back!

Great service and a surprisingly great meal. It reminds me of a better version of IHOP. Not sure I would come here often, but it would definitely be a place to bring out of town guests, as the menu is large enough to accommodate all tastes and preferences.

This was an awesome breakfast establishment ans had quality service and great food. The attitude in the restaurant was welcomed and service was fast, ambiance not much we i was there at lunch. Probably the loudest and busiest timeframe. Ill definitely be visiting again.

Had a great lunch here at the Black Bear Diner. The atmosphere is like a cleaner greasy spoon diner. The waitstaff are super friendly and easy to work with. For lunch expect a little waiting time before seating, but then again it's the luck of the draw. The lunch we had was great! And the portions are plenty. I ordered the chicken nest, which is new in the menu. Which is chicken breast in Hollandaise sauce, and onion straws which was excellent. Came with good broccoli and what tasted like real mashed potatoes and white gravy. My wife ordered the "bear paws" which looked like a chicken fried steak, with the same sides I had. Both were very delicious. Like I said the server was attentive and quick to refill our drinks and get our bill ready. Overall a great experience for locals and visitors alike, highly recommend!

We had a delightful dinner tonight at the Black Bear Diner. There's a Big welcome Bear for photo ops, a souvenir store for bear claw house shoes, paw gloves, stuffed animals, t-shirts and more. We were seated promptly; there were 5 of us, Makenzie was great, very friendly and attentive. The restaurant is clean, with an outdoor camp feel. Their menus are on newspaper which is cute. We ordered the turkey club, 2 cheese burgers, chicken & waffles and a breakfast special with sweet cream pancakes. Everything was fresh and delicious.

This place is AWESOME!! Such cute decor, great music (but not too loud) & great service by Maria! Let me tell you about the food!!!! I was so happy when black bear opened because we had them back home and really missed them. The food is the way we remember, generous portions and really hit the spot. Past 3 dine experiences were good, food was portioned and cooked correctly. Dined in on 5/16 and was less than desirable. Tried to order 2x2x2 weekly breakfast special that is on the Alliance Black Bear Diner online order website and was told.by waitress it wasn't available, I stated it was on their website, she checked with the manager and stated not honored at this location. Ordered a Denver omelett, and the manager served my plate. Noticed the overly cooked hashbrowns and decided to try because I hate to send a plate back. They were hard and burnt, so decided to send it back, as I looked up to see manager turn with something in his right hand put food in his mouth as he was still in the dead center of the front counter. Decided to take my loss on a $14.06 plus 20% tip for a meal of $16.65 that wasn't completely edible, on top of being denied a special that should have been honored Sent a comment through Black Bear "contact us", no response. read more

We have ordered breakfast foods a few times and they have been good. My wife enjoys the California Bacon Benedict and I get The Grizz. I recently ordered the biscuits and gravy. The biscuit is very large but was to hard and dry even with the gravy. It may have been a one off with a biscuit that was over cooked a touch. The gravy was good though. read more

Our first visit and it was like walking into a movie scene which was way cool! We ordered from the choose one + one on the top left side of the paper menu when you open it up. We asked about the seasonal pancakes hoping to hear about a possible "Pumpkin Spice"! Nope, only Strawberry & whipped cream which you can have year round with other restaurants. It's Fall Season! We had the pancakes with bacon & eggs (see pic). Pancakes were very flavorful the rest was average. All the side condiments were in "to-go" packets!?!Service was okay and the staff were very polite and friendly. The Black Bear looks great but the food did not match the Ambiance. Absolute worse service from our waitress Madalynn. Never asked if the food came out alright, never returned to ask for refills, completely vanished off the floor, no where to be found. I watched our food sit at the kitchen counter for a good 15 minutes until another waitress looked around and grabbed it. The only time she reappeared was to ask if we wanted our check. What a joke show especially since the restaurant was less than half capacity on a Sunday afternoon. I guess if we ever return, I'll have to cook our own meals too. read more

To say this place did not disappoint doesn't give it justice. The sausage patties are home made and the best I have ever had. My server told me I could do one mild and one hot. Both were perfect. These sausage were perfectly seasoned and cooked. Literally perfect. The biscuits are huge with that perfect biscuit texture. As far as the gravy, this was the first time in my life that I did not need to add salt. Their sausage gravy is pure perfection. So many places mess up this pretty easy recipe. Black Bear Diner nailed it. Everything g we had here was fantastic. The service was top notch, as well. They are nuzzled in about 40 or 50 restaurants in this little area and they stand out as one of the best by far. They are a perfect breakfast place. I just need to try their lunch, which I'm sure will be equally great. read more

We went last night for dinner on a Friday night, glad we were finally able to try it out and not have it be packed. The service and staff was great we were seated right away and our waitress was super sweet and helpful. Let's talk about the prices!! I was blown away to see such great affordable prices especially for the kids menu 4.99! You can't beat that these days, my daughters ordered the grilled cheese and chocolate chip pancakes both great size plus after 11am they get either a sundae or strawberries as a dessert. I ordered the tri tip dip and my husband got the unlimited Friday fried fish both were good. Overall the price is great staff was nice and establishment felt clean, will come back read more

Came here today for lunch and had an amazing experience. Sydney our waitress did an amazing job. Quick with service and she kept the drinks filled the entire time which is impressive with the amount of Coca Cola that I drink. We decided to order in after a long day, and all three of us ordered something different. My brother got the breakfast burrito and it was a huge hit, it looked amazing and he gave it a thumbs up. Hubs got the pot roast and really enjoyed it, although the portion was pretty skimpy, so keep that in mind if your wanting a big meal, he said it seemed like a kids or senior citizen portion, but it was very good. I got the chicken fried steak and was so disappointed, it tasted exactly like the school lunch CFS from the 1980's I really was surprised since this is a diner. Now I'm not going to rate them too harshly on that, their breakfasts look like the winner, and we love breakfast foods so I will for sure go back, sorry I don't have any pictures, it was just too much to manage after a draining day and we weren't at the dining table. But trust me on that breakfast burrito, it could feed two people! read more

When we got the check he tells us he got in trouble for serving my 16 year a kids meal, I ask myself do I really believe that whoever runs the place pays attention to every single meal each person gets there? My family isn't a fan of leftovers so if this is the case and my kids can't order from the kids menu we probably will not return. read more

History

Established in 1995.

In 1861 a gold prospector named Sisson fell in love with Strawberry Valley - a quaint mountain meadow at the foot of Mt. Shasta. He opened an inn overlooking wild berry patches that were frequented by black bears and people alike. Large portions of quality food in an interesting and friendly atmosphere became the standard that people expected on their visits. In 1995, Bob and Laurie Manley and their partner Bruce Dean opened the first Black Bear Diner on the site of these old strawberry patches. They were determined to rekindle the level of hospitality that was lavished upon early guests to Strawberry Valley. The menu, service and decor were designed to remind the guest of a time when life was a little more simple, and service and quality were the cornerstones of business. Although we've grown from a single location at Mt. Shasta to over 55 restaurants, all are dedicated to the same simple concepts that made the original inn at Strawberry Valley famous.

Malai starts every table with steamed sticky rice and an eggplant dip, which is a charming little ritual and a genuinely good one. We also kicked things off with the Edamame, a heads up on the heat level there, and the Fried Imperial Rolls, filled with ground pork and shrimp and served with a sesame soy sauce. Fair warning: these do not photograph well and arrive at the table looking a little shy. Don't be fooled. They're flavorful, subtly spicy, and well worth ordering. For entrees, we tried the Basil Vegetable Fried Rice two ways, one vegan and one with chicken. The vegan version was a genuine surprise, with vegetables cooked just right and a flavor that didn't need the chicken to make its case. The mushrooms, however, had the texture of something you'd find in a hardware store. Chew at your own risk. The Green Curry, meanwhile, was a case of too much of a good thing. The curry was so heavy-handed it drowned everything underneath it. Sometimes restraint is a virtue. Save room for the Banana Pot de Crème. It's creamy, subtly sweet, and a graceful finish to the meal. The service at Malai is enthusiastic, and I do mean enthusiastic. The staff works as a team, all smiles, attentive, always nearby. Occasionally a little too nearby. More than once a plate nearly disappeared before we were done with it. It's a small complaint, and honestly a far better problem than the alternative. They're warm, cheerful, and clearly enjoy what they do, which goes a long way. Portions are generous, so order a few dishes and share the wealth. For a lunch stop between shops, Malai Kitchen punches well above its weight.

The meatloaf I ordered was not up to the expected standard. The crust was excessively dry and hard, making it difficult to consume. Due to the busy nature of the restaurant during the lunch rush on a Monday spring break, I chose not to send it back, as my children were almost finished with their meals. When the waitress inquired about the meal, I expressed my dissatisfaction with the meatloaf, to which she kindly offered additional gravy. Love this place! Staff is super friendly. We obviously come too often because they remember us and the kind of table we like(booth). Pancakes are sweet and delicious without syrup.
