I'll be honest with you in the morning the staff leaves something to be desired but that doesn't seem to be the case with the later shifts. That being said I came in one day looking for a quick breakfast before class and was presently surprised with the portions and quality along with the price I would've paid $5 more or just my meal and been just as happy but instead I gave it as a tip. If you come for breakfast you have to try the pancakes and trust me a little butter is all you need on the they honestly are amazing very dense for a pancake but sweet like it already has syrup in it. I loved Black Bear Diner when I lived in northern California. I was excited to to discover it here as well. Went there for dinner few months ago, ordered the rib eye steak. Asked for medium, the steak was very thin, and was more like well done. Despite it being well done (no pink at all), I got horribly sick after eating it. Everything came back up in the middle of the night. Stayed up the rest of the night with horrible cramps, continued vomiting, and diarrhea, well into the next day. I'm sure that is already more than what most people wants to hear... Luckily I had the next day off from work. I spent it sipping on Gatorade. Couldn't eat any actual solid food. Needless to say, I'm scared of this location now, and probably all Black Bear Diners in general. I don't care how delicious their pancakes are, I will always associate the wooden bears to puking my guts out all night. No thank you. read more

We love BBD, we usually frequent the La Habra location more than this one for a reason, the service. We came here a few weeks ago on a Friday night, we got seated quickly and then we waited for almost 10 min for a server ( it wasn't even busy). Finally, a guy came and took our order ( also the people behind us who were also waiting). While he was nice, he kept on disappearing. The people behind us weren't as patient and demanded boxes and the check to leave. While they were boxing up, he told them "I'm doing salad prep for tomorrow", the gal rolled her eyes and they left leaving no tip. We also got boxes and left a smaller than usual tip. The manager seemed to be doing most of his work ( getting refills and clearing dishes) anyway. I mean I get doing prep for the next day but at 7:30 on your busiest night, I think the prep can wait. It was not busy at all and the waitress kept passing my fiancé and I and not asking us if we needed anything. It took 35 minutes to get a refill on a drink. Not happy just paid 84.00 as a reoccurring customer to black bear and usually visit different locations in CA, this was my first time at this location took my family ... we ordered only to get pieces of our meals and get one of the main courses after we ate??? I ordered breakfast with pancakes .. after they forgot to bring my pancakes I asked if I could get my pancakes only to be told pancakes come after the meal??? What? Where do I begin...we ordered two breakfast plates and a side of pancakes with strawberries and whipped cream. The two plates arrive and we had to remind our server about the pancakes. She brings them over about 10 minutes later with powdered sugar and syrup...I said we asked for strawberries and whipped cream. She says oh that comes on the side, it'll be right out. Where have you ever been where that shit comes on the side guys? While all of this is happening, the table next to us has been here for an hour with no food yet. They complain to the same server we have and she says it's her fault and that her manager just spoke with her. She also mentioned that the manager would be right out to speak to them which he never did. We go up to the register to pay and see the manager (middle aged male with no hair in case you happen to see him because you may want to turn around and leave unless you like people touching your food with their bare hands), and he's scolding the kitchen staff for not making someone's French toast crispy enough. This is a good American style foods they have good breakfast that's my favorite and it's nice clean good service sometimes you have wait in line parking lot OK it's next to Ralph market this location used to be Cocos restaurant., I order steak and eggs with country breakfast well done on meat I had wait for over 15 minutes and then they brought my foods ready to eat, I found a pece of hair on my potatoes kind lost my appetite after seeing the hair Gross so called the waiters and told her about it she said do you want another one OK, then the Manger came by and apologize and said will make you another plate OK, then they brought the steak my potatoes change from country to hash brown I told it's okay fine then when I started to cut my steak it's was bloody and I ordered well done so I called the waiters she said she will take back and cooked more the Manger came by again she apologize and give a discount on my receipt I said OK thx I been there before oh so in Buena park before it's first time I see like this I was totally lost my appetite at this time and then I need it coffee I have to call the waiters to get me a coffee very bad service I think this will be my last time to go there it's to bad if they continue like this they will start losing business customers look for great service and good foods. read more

came in to blackbears today for lunch, our young lady waitress was kind and sweet. took our order quickly, I let her know I need my veggies is very well done. my omelet came out out with very almost raw. she apologize and returned the omelette and asks the cooks and manager to have them very well done. few minutes later another omelette comes out veggies are the same. she asks the cooks to please cook them very well done for me, the cook starts to yell at her that he can't do that and becomes rude, manager sees this yet does nothing to help. later I see the manager take my waitress aside and berate her for trying to help me, never did they come to apologize to me or help. definitely will not be coming back to this restauranr. very sad to see this work envornament for workers. read more

They took over old Carrows and Coco's locations and transformed into these ugly as sheep restaurants. I just couldn't get myself to enter one until last night, just because it's so close to the Fullerton Loop. Parking is bad in this plaza, so suck it up and park farther and walk, you'll need the walk back after a meal here, trust me! Anyway, the restaurant is almost empty but there is a waiting list somehow. My friends didn't want to seat at the sorry excuse of a bar area so we didn't have to wait so we got seated in about 5 min. This is such a bad use of the space here, the only good part of the restaurant is really only on the right side as you come in. The left side is a crowded space with only a couple of tables and there is another section in the back on the right side that is so isolated, quiet and pathetic that I was praying they won't seat us there! There is no beer on tap so I got a bottle of Stella, they have quite a few other good options. The fried chicken with mashed potatoes, the backed potato, the onion rings, the corn bread and the other comfort food that we kind of shared was good, but you could tell that the ingredients were cheap/low quality, down to the chicken that had a little bit of that unmistakable metallic taste, specific to hormone infused, antibiotic laced, fast growing chicken. The corn bread had the good taste but not the right texture, there was more high fructose corn syrup in there than corn. The mashed potatoes were good, with garlic and bacon, as long as you don't worry what they are actually made of. The onion rings were good, they didn't look like they were frozen or anything. The portions are large and pretty inexpensive so you don't feel bad leaving half of it on the table. The service was slow, they give you plenty of time to order, but friendly and comforting. It's a great place if yo need some quick "Granma's food" style edible stuff, but in between the ugliness and the half baked attempt to bring that log cabin warmth you need a lot of imagination to feel good here. read more

It was kind of awful. The impression you get when you walk in, is that if you're not a regular, you won't get good service. And that's exactly what we got. This the first restaurant I took my son to when summer vacation started. I was encouraging him to write restaurant reviews to maintain his writing skills over the summer. The food was mediocre at best. My son had the Mini Volcano and I had the veggie omelet. The pancakes were all different sizes and the omelet was totally overcooked. The service was atrocious. I have been here before and customer service is not something they care about. The waiter, Guillermo, was not very nice, but he was not rude. I didn't pay any mind to the lack of enthusiasm in his demeanor while he was serving us. I didn't even say anything when he left the receipt on the table as soon as out food was brought out. I was insanely irritated though, when he asked me if I was done with my food and proceeded to take my sons plate while he was eating. He was literally taking a bite of his biscuit and Guillermo took his plate without asking him. My 10 year old looked and me and burst out laughing, "I guess I'll place my biscuit here." And placed his biscuit on the placemat where his plate once stood. Needless to say we will not be returning and we suggest you take your business elsewhere. I can't understand why this place is always busy. I went to lunch with my neighbor and she told me she really liked the Chinese chicken salad she had the last time she went. I had a hamburger and granted it was the largest hamburger I've ever ordered but it was tasteless. My friend ordered a pastrami sandwich and when it arrived I look at it and thought that the meat looked discoloured. She took a bite or two and didn't like it so I sent it back. I'm pretty sure the reason people are going to Black Bear is the quantity of food but the quality is bad. I will say the inside of the restaurant is very cute and the service was good. My husband and I decided to go have breakfast for dinner after visiting his mom at St. Jude on Wednesday around 8pm. Julie, our server, really perked us up. We were having a very very very bad day. She was a ray of sunshine and made are night better. Our food was amazing (as always) and her service was outstanding. I wish we lived closer to go there more. Shes the kind of server I like; super friendly and good with the jokes! While we paid, we got to chat with Mike and Fernando. They were kind, funny and very friendly. Made our night even better. My girlfriend, her mom, and I just attempted to eat dinner here last night and we didn't have a pleasant experience. My girlfriend had a California burger and fries. She said the burger tasted like something you would buy at a carnival. Very bland and cooked to death, I guess the Cooks had to make sure the cow was killed a 2nd time. She said the best part of the burger was the avocado she ordered on the side. The bacon on her burger and her moms plate tasted heavy and oily/saturated like it was sitting out for awhile and then reheated). She barely ate half of the burger. Her mom had a breakfast platter and the hashbrowns were cold, the gravy on her biscuits didnt taste good and that was also cold. She also only ate the eggs on her plate. Thank god they didn't mess up the EGGS! I ordered the blazing pulled pork sandwich and it was not up to par at all. I am not a great cook by any means but i could have made a better pulled pork sandwich in my own kitchen. The pork tasted very strange/off, it was also very dry, and i couldn't even eat half of it. I honestly should've sent it back right away. The food also left bad tastes in our mouths. My stomach was in knots and has been since we left. My girlfriend's mother still isn't feeling too well (this morning included). Our waitress told us she wasnt sure what she could do about things. For starters, she could have told the cooks our complaints so they could use it as constructive criticism that way they could make the next customers happy. Just a thought, I've worked in restaurants before... Definitely not coming back unless the food quality and service get better. It made me wish that the Coco's that was there before never left. Our waitress was not on top of filling drinks and i had to ask another waitress for napkins and utensils because i was forgotten about. The workers seemed more interested in conversing with one another than doing their job. We pretty much donated $45 to the restaurant. If you're looking for a good place to give donations be it money or clothes i recommend donating to Goodwill or the Salvation Army. Or eating the clothes(might taste less bland?) just dont give it to Black Bear Diner because odds are you won't be happy with your experience. We gave this chain restaurant an opportunity to impress us. We are very happy with or experience. First, our server, Leo, was very inviting and attentive. Props to him! Food was fresh and hot when it came out on our plates. Tritium sandwich deluxe was delicious and so was the taco salad with chicken. Love the house made dressings for the salads. Ummm.... I seriously don't see what all the hype is about Black Bear Diner. Let's start with the service. Our server took a few more minutes than necessary to take our drink order. A salad and grilled cheese sandwich should not take 20 minutes but whatevs. French fries were cold and greasy, sandwich did not come out on the correct bread, salad had like three pieces of chicken on it. I don't have a problem with sending my food back except my server never came by to check on us. No water refills. No offers of dessert. Nada. Had to ask somebody else for our check and while I wait, I'm sitting here writing this review. The one star is for the lemon in my water. read more

Amazing customer service experience with Justin, the business student. We arrived late and they were out of the Tri Tip sandwich. My friend's mother was so disappointed as she has been waiting all night. Her daughter, who we just saw post-surgery, highly recommended it. Justin told her they were out but asked the cook if he could Make one from the "next days" quota of meat. Outside the box thinker. He's understands the customer experience. It resulted in the family going the next day (today) even though Justin wasn't there and they had another meal! I am in the medical field and had a patient recommend this restaurant. I was not sure what to expect but had my wife look at the menu and then we decided to go there for our Valentine's Day, on the 13th. We arrived about 5:45 and it was not crowded. We were seated pretty quickly, not the best table, but I wasn't going to complain. The waitress was pretty busy, so the manager came over and took our order by memory. We quickly received our salads and before we finished our salads we got our entrees. My wife got the chicken fried steak, fries, and sauteed vegies. I had a bit and it was good. I got the Tri Tip dinner, the smaller portion, with a baked potato and sauteed vegies. The Tri tip was good but not great, a little tough and dry. I like to eat the skin on a baked potato, and this one was not that tasty, so I only ate half. The vegies were tasty. All in all, good service and food. This place is good for comfort food, like meatloaf, chicken fried steak, beef, chicken and seafood. The ambience is rustic, fitting for a restaurant that started in Mt. Shasta. First off we walked in behind a party of four. They got sat immediately, we stood there waiting for the shift lead or host to return to seat us. Took a lil bit longer than expected but the problem lay with the manager managing this evening. The whole time we stood there he stayed hiding behind the cash register not more than 7-10 feet away from us...no greeting no acknowledgement or even letting us know that someone will be with us in a moment. Second we were sat with no server for 8 minutes. This wouldn't be horrible if we were notified onshore our server might have been. Instead we flagged down another employee and asked him just to send someone over as soon as possible. He replied with letting us know "we're short handed right now, everyone just got cut." He did get a server for us along with beverages right away. We were never checked up on for beverage refills or simple "how was the food?" The worst part is that I was asked if I wanted a soup or salad accompanied with my steak in which I replied to soup. I could've had mystery soup for all I knew. The soup came out and sure enough it was a creamy mushroom soup, I'm unfortunately allergic to mushrooms. Maura (our server) took the opportunity and turn her service around 180 degrees and was very attentive and caring after that. I watched the manager deliver a few plates to a few tables only to be more dissapointed. I watched a he borderlined push the plates to the guests in a quick and non caring manner and walk off instantly with just a "have a good meal" being said as he's already walking off. No "do you folks need anything else with your meal" "how is everything looking folks?" I watched as he basically hid behind the cash register until "needed". The worst part was that when we went to pay our bill, once more, no personality and no customer service. Didn't inquire about our meal, didn't invite us back, didn't even say goodbye. Practically tossed the credit card slip to me when he asked me to sign. This is the second time I've come to this location on the evening while the same manager is on shift and it is the second time I had a dinner and a show with watching how dull and uncarring this manager can look like. I will continue to dine in and promote the store for the morning to afternoon. I will not mention or suggest dinner/evening service to anyone though. read more
