Came here on a whim not knowing what to expect and only skimmed a few reviews that said there were big portions. So I thought, cool. Game on. We came here for dinner and the food was sub-par at best. I ordered the chicken parm meal with a soup and mashed potatoes with gravy. The soup was a clam chowder soup that came out warm, not hot and tasted like it came from a Campbells soup can. So ok, that was bad and I moved on. The corn muffin was probably the best thing on my plate which is why this place is getting 2 stars. The chicken parm tasted like bad ketchup mixed with Prego. It was SUPER red. So cheap and gross. Definitely not homemade. The mashed potatoes and gravy were the worst. Like, how can you mess that up? I'm pretty sure everything here is formulated from some mixture that just needs water added to it. *ahem* the potatoes. The meal came with a side of penne pasta with that ketchup-prego mix smothered on top. I hated it so much that I only took a bite. My kids ordered burgers and never ate them. Huge shock since they have great appetites. My other kid got stuck with with a chewy chicken fried steak and those darn potatoes that he couldn't eat. My husband didn't finish his pot pie and munched on his 5 onion rings the remainder of the evening. These were not huge portions by any means. Maybe folks need to venture out more to see what real "huge" portions look like. Food was terrible and all the workers looked like they were sad they worked there. Based on one visit. Summary: excellent overall during a non-busy time. I was skeptical when, visiting our son who lives in Gilbert, he said the BBD there had the best breakfast. I had never actually gone to a BBD but the reviews on yelp that I'd previously read for others in the chain didn't exactly auger well, as I saw it. But, as my son grew up in Berkeley I knew he had excellent taste. :-) And, it was excellent. Large portions, tasted above average even for good breakfast food. The fruit, in lieu of potatoes, was the real treat: entirely fresh and yummy. Friendly and efficient service. No wait as it was about 10 am on a Fri morning. The best breakfast of the three we had out. Our waitress, her name's Jaimie forgot to refill our lemonade having to come by three times to see how we were doing and forgot my order so instead of getting it she changed the bill. We went there Friday for prime rib. Got there about 6:30 and prime rib was already gone. Ordered New York steak. Expectations of steak wasn't high but two orders placed. One order of fried chicken and waffles and one open faced turkey dinner. Salads arrive and they only had on cornbread muffin. Instead of asking the men if they would like toast or a roll, she cut it in half and stick it in the side of the salad. She says we are out so you two have to share. Dinner comes, no grits with the waffle/chicken, no stuffing for the turkey dinner and steaks came out well instead of medium rare. Tables were not super clean either and you would think it would be. At least our pies were okay. Used to swear by going to these while traveling. Last two times were not good. We might have to find another go to place on our journeys. read more

Let me start out by saying that this place is AMAZING. I'm pretty picky about my breakfast foods, but literally everything I've tried here so far has been delicious (their Classic Benedict is my favorite so far)! Also, I'm seriously in love with the fact that they give you an entire individual pie instead of just a slice-seriously the cutest! I went to breakfast with a group of 10 this morning. Often when I go out in a big group like this, it flusters the wait staff, but our waitress was super calm and helpful, despite making like 4 trips to our table for drink orders because we arrived at separate times. No rolling of the eyes when we asked for separate checks either. The amazing event that caused me to write this review is that one person said their food was a bit cold. Our waitress was very apologetic and offered to re make the food. The person with the cold food was not complaining, not trying to make a big deal out of it, so the waitress left. Within 2 minutes there was a friendly manager, kneeling down beside our table trying to find some way to make it right. Though nothing was asked for, he comped her entire meal and stuck around and chatted with us for a while. We have been coming here regularly forever! I know we are in the middle of a difficult time as well. We couldn't have been more excited to come to BBD for breakfast. This morning we put our name in for a party of 3 and asked for a table. We waited an hour to be called only to find out it was for a booth. We told the server we asked for a table and she said "Oh sure, just let me clean this table off for you. It'll be about "FIVE" minutes. We went in for dinner with 2 kids and I must say that management needs to get involved. The staff did not want to be there. We felt neglected and the staff was attentive to us. The restaurant was not too busy. My order was wrong and the sever even wrote it down, when the food was brought, it was brought to the wrong table. I don't blame the server, I blame management for not seeing what is going on. This neglect was also shown in the restroom, both paper towel dispensers were empty. I hope that the next time things will be better. We work hard and choose to spend money at places and being treated this way isn't how you succeed in the service industry. We just moved to Gilbert yesterday and decided to give this place a try, (on a recommendation from a co-worker). This place is wonderful! Great tasting food, very generous portions, and rockstar service. The first cool thing I noticed was the menu. I won't spoil it for anyone, but it's very fun, interesting, and meant for the customers to take home. I've never seen anything like it. Our waitress was Janna and she is the sweetest thing ever. A couple of our side items were a little cold, so she immediately ran to the kitchen and came back with big portions of the sides that were piping hot. Janna gave superstar service and treated us like family. ‍‍‍ The food here is made in-house,from scratch. The sweet cream pancakes are fluffy, sweet and delicious. The red potatoes are nicely seasoned and the homemade biscuit was huge, (it filled the bowl it was served in), flaky and so delicious that I ate it with nothing but butter on it. I had Bruce's Meat Lover's Omelette and added mushrooms. It was great and so big that I could only eat half of it. Our entire dining experience was amazing! ***Update: Second time was less impressive but still love this place. Don't order their burgers as the meat is not good quality. Tasted like a McDonalds patty. Corned beef hash was so delicious but the tiniest portion in comparison to their other entrees. Good thing the sides were bigger.*** For years I never cared to try this place assuming it would be like Denny's. Because of Yelp, I decided to try one day when we were close by. The wait was 2 hours so we couldn't stay. I started thinking maybe there was something special. We failed to eat there many times because we can't wait long with a baby. Today, we finally came early enough to only have to wait 10 minutes! To my surprise, EVERYTHING tasted amazing and everyone enjoyed the experience. This is one of those super-sized breakfast places that win my heart. I got a vegetable scramble that had loads of spinach and other veggies, hash browns, a giant fluffy pancake, and a watermelon wedge. I tasted my dad's pecan crusted trout and it was as good as one from any pricier New-American restaurant. My husband got the turkey pesto sandwich that looked very substantial. Called in to place an order and spoke to a lady that had me laughing about that fact that I didn't like onions ( great sense of humor ). When we received the order all 4 plates had onions. With a simple call into the restaurant the same lady that took my order brought the food all the way to us!! Talk about satisfying the customer!!! We went here for the 2nd time in 2 weeks and had an ok experience. We were here for lunch before and my turkey sandwich was delicious. Saturday morning we went for breakfast for my husband's birthday. He ordered the huge chicken fried steak, over easy eggs and biscuit. The steak was tender but so salty. The gravy tasted canned and the eggs were very runny (snotty). The server didn't bring us butter and we had to ask. Biscuits were...dry. I ordered the pancakes and again, no butter. One small cup of syrup barely covered half of one. We had to flag down the server for butter and more syrup and waited quite a while for her to return. I was drinking coffee and never one time was asked for a refill. I only had one cup but wished for more. We might return but only if other places are packed. Sad read more

I enjoyed the Vegetarian Omelette with Hash Browns. I've never had a problem with the omelette, but the hash browns aren't always done right. More times than not they are overcooked. I like them kind of crunchy, but a lot of the time they're burnt. It's a really good meal, but it would be so much better if they cooked them with consistency. read more

We love coming to Black Bear. Typically it is a 5/5 every time we go. We have been another 4 times previously. We went today and it was a huge disappointment. We were ok with the how busy it was. We expected to wait to be seated and wait for our food. What was a problem was our food was cold and the potatoes were heavily undercooked. Obviously we weren't going to complain. I planned on taking the food home and finish cooking the potatoes. Don't get the biscuit and gravy. The biscuit is dry, crumbly and the gravy is bland. The waitress said there is meat in the gravy but there wasn't. I got the California Benedict (I get the same thing every time) they made it correctly this time with the eggs runny but it was like the food sat out for a while before it hit the table. My favorite item on the menu: Cinnamon roll french toast, hasnt been available in Arizona in over 6 months. Its been on the menu the whole time with stores citing "supply chain problems" as the reason its out. I Reached out on Facebook and was ignored. So i went to the grocery store, bought the ingredients to make cinnamon rolls, then french toasted them. But if I can go to the grocery store and get everything to make this... than so can they. We walked in and we already knew something was off. We didn't wait long to be seated but it was clearly a bit packed, it doesn't matter though, what's the harm in a little waiting? At least that's what we thought. We ended up sitting in a booth and the waiter asked us what we'd like to drink. I got a mocha and my family members got some water. Already, I could tell that the waiter was clearly irritated either from work or the amount of people that ended up showing to come and eat, like I said it was kind of packed. Anyways, the waiter handed us our drinks shortly after and asked what we'd like to eat. This is when we could tell that the full sass and attitude came out. It wasn't a big deal at the time and we just brushed it off and talked to each other as we waited. It ended up being 25 minutes, so to pass the time I asked a nearby waiter what the Wi-Fi password was, and went on my phone for a bit. It ended up taking roughly another 30 minutes until me and my family realized it's time to go. Obviously, the place was either understaffed, fragile under pressure, or just straight up forgot about us. The final straw was seeing two tables that came AFTER us get served first, mind you, they had big salad bowls and food that looked like it would take a while to prepare. We ended up telling our waiter to cancel our order and that's where it all went down the drain. The waiter raised her voice in a kind of demanding way, saying that she would give a 50% discount, and begged us to stay for at least another 10 minutes to get our food. But we were done, we didn't want to wait any longer, especially because we knew that 10 minutes was actually going to be another 20 at the minimum. We ended up not arguing cause at that point we didn't even care. The waiter begged us to stay and offered a full 100% discount, but like I said, we were done. We decided to go up to the register to try and pay for my only Mocha, because the water is free of course, but we didn't have to. I was dragged here by the suburban AZ family, not a place I would go to by myself. There are dozens of people waiting a very long time to be seated here on a weekend late morning, the wait was about 45 min and there were not enough seats, even for the disabled older people like my mother. Eating took twice as long: the whole experience was 3 hours, and the food was on the sticky/heavy/carby side with too huge portions. The saving grace was being with the family but even that is challenging with a bunch of kids trying to get through the experience without freaking out, but they had many distractions and fast track food for the kids. Fun for certain types of groups but not my style! I have to give it credit for liveliness, patience, and friendliness overall. read more
