We have been to many Black Bear Diners but this one is a cut above. We stopped in to eat and my wife wanted her favorite, the bear claw. They didn't have the almond variety so she was sad. Enter Julio the A+++ manager. He saved the day. He investigated, saw they were about to start cooking them, and comped both the berry claw and the almond claw. Now THAT is the way you do it. Service extraordinaire! Well done Julio and Kelly for the great work. We will be back, of course. By the way, my corned beef hash was great. Large shredded chunks of beef and yummy. read more

He was mother daughter special time Friday morning. So we decided to go to breakfast and have some fun. For some reason I didn't realize she had never been to Black Bear diner. My husband and I used to go a lot more when we first started dating because he was so close to his old apartment. She thought it was the funniest thing to see the cute little wood carving bears all over the place. She ordered the cinnamon roll pancakes and I had The eggs Benedict which I never had before, I usually order the steak and eggs. I should have stayed with my usual because they were not that great, sad to say. They looked pretty but everything was very runny and I don't mean the poached egg. It was like they might have used old bread plus old tomatoes, so all together just turned into a pile of mushiness. I will not give it any less stars than four because every other time I've been, and I have been several times over the past 10 years, I've had a very very good experience both with the friendly staff, friendly servers and very good steak and eggs. This is the last time I come to this predjudice establishment. My friend & I come in go to the podium tell her how many was in our party 2& she says have a seat let me clean off the table. She steps away then Holly walks up & this man was at the podium he tells her he has 2 in his party & she seats him. When our hostess walks up I asked her what was that all about. Then Holly lies & says she just seated 4. I told her No I was standing there & heard him clearly say 2. So the other hostess said that we were 1st. She kept being argumentative on about he was standing there so she just took him first. So just ignore the ones who are sitting there waiting. She kept on going back & forth with me. U til I just walked off. As far as her being a Manager I think she handled this situation unprofessionally & unfortunately this put a bad taste in my mouth because I have had a bad experience with them before. Phenomenal food, friendly service, and cozy atmosphere. Their breakfast is where it's AT! Be prepared to wait an hour or more for a table (definitely on weekends, not sure if weekdays are less busy). Also the parking lot is teeny tiny and it's hard to get a spot. But the food is worth the little inconveniences. I always take out of town guests here to eat when I have visitors. The veggie omelette, Shasta scramble, and sweet cream waffle are my go-tos. Hash browns are awesome too. read more

Food was as expected but writing this review to provide feedback for server Vanessa. Vanessa seemed a little irritated from the beginning of our visit but didn't bother me at first, everyone has their moments. Throughout the visit she ignored us and when we were able to ask for things like water, condiments etc we never got them. We had to interrupt other staff to ask for things, which the gentleman we did ask was very nice and helpful about it. She just had an overall irritated attitude towards us and I hope she has a better day. Good food and Friendly Staff and not all run down considered it's in a very busy spot of town

After a cumulation of a 38 Day Road Trip, I decided I was going to finish it off with a fantastic meal . So, I went to the Black Bear Diner. But,I was a bit surprised that when I walked in, I got seated almost immediately, as there is usually a little bit of a weight based on what I've seen and driving by. At first, when the waitress handed me the paper, I was still waiting for a menu. Turns out, the paper is the menu. Whoops. Well, my waitress, introduced herself, even though she was wearing a name tag a rare occurrence in the restaurant industry nowadays on both. Well, I order the tri-tip combo with a salad, corn, and Redskin mashed potatoes. But, what did surprise me, was it when she asked if I wanted beef gravy, or turkey gravy. Apparently, people do order a beef dish with turkey gravy (In my opinion, that's like having a diet soda with a jelly-filled donut). And, blackberry cobbler ala mode (vanilla bean ice creamk for dessert. As you can see by the pictures, it looks absolutely delicious period and taste even better! And, to make it even better, there was enough left over to take home to give me a second dinner. Great food, and excellent service. Thanks again Sarah, and the other two waitresses one who seated me, and one who brought me my meal. Well no fault of the restaurants, the one thing that really bugs me is their location. It's just south of the freeway, and between the poorly time traffic signals, only one way to go when coming out, and a couple of areas where no u-turns are allowed, getting there and leaving, can be a bit irritating. read more

I stopped in to grab a bite for lunch, and was pleasantly surprised. The hostess greeted me with a smile, the place was buzzing with clientele and my waitress, Ingrid, was a delight. Went in for breakfast with the family , everything was fine until we asked the waitress if it was possible to move tables to which she said was totally fine and went up to the front to let them know the table we were moving to was going to be unavailable and immediately the manager came up to us already raising her voice telling us we couldn't and was being extremely rude ! We moved back to our original table no problem but she stayed there repeating herself very loudly and rude telling us we couldn't sit there after we said ok we understand and she kept going . My son had been here a few years ago while visiting a friend and suggested we go. So we stopped in for brunch. I had the Bear Claw French toast which I wasn't sure I was going to like ( but wanted too step out of my box) and it was fabulous. The first review that popped up was a very derogatory one-star review. Only after passing up the restaurant did I notice that it was from 2014. Yelp should drop reviews, both positive and negative, after some time. I doubt that management has remained the same over nine years. Also, what is "elite24" about? Came back here yesterday and it was packed! And I'm not surprised why, the food is great! Luckily I placed an online order and even though it was packed my order was ready when I got there, they were out of bread pudding but If you snooze you lose lol the restaurant was kind enough to replace my dessert with a silk chocolate pie even though it cost more. We decided to stop by BBD on out way back from taking family photos down south of Avondale. We never been and have heard good things about the place. The Good - We're seated immediately and a short time later our order was taken. The Bad - we watched our food come up to the pass and stay there..... The Ugly - not only did our food sit there for 15 minutes. We tried getting the waitress attention multiple times while she walked past our food. Maybe we'll have better luck at another location. I have only had their breakfast food and it is all very good! I usually get a sampling of pancakes, eggs, hash browns, toast, etc. The pancakes are nice and fluffy and I like that they serve breakfast all day. We don't come here often, but when we have the service has always been good. They have a large menu of diner style food that is consistently good. We love coming here for our Sunday breakfast. The southern scrambled is my all time fav! My daughter loves her cinnamon French toast plate. Basically your eating a plate of grease...that's what it smells like and that's what it tasted like. As a matter of fact, this old, outdated restaurant just reeked of grill grease as we headed towards our table. This was for breakfast and due to the nasty flavor, everything came right out a few minutes later. The healthy choices are limited, so I'm not sure if you will be able to avoid the same fate as me. The potatoes are probably the culprit, but the Shasta scramble just was an oil soaked mess. This is food for the masses, not for the more refined members of society. read more

What a joke of a restaurant. Called on 11/5/23 @10:45 am to place a To-Go order, and was told they're not taking to go's. I asked how long it would take and I'd be willing to wait and was told there is no wait they're just not taking to go's. The fact that the restaurant is busy, isn't my fault if you're poorly staffed and unable to meet guest requests on Sunday morning (100% your busiest day) then what kind or establishment are you running. I just love this place. The food, staff and management team are all on point. Ordered the Bob Big Bear Burger and it was HUGE. Cooked to perfection.
