Re: All-you-can-eat Fish fry platter I noticed during Lenten, the period after Fat Tuesday until Easter Friday, many restaurants will have more fish or seafood menu items. I know BBD has battered cod on the regular everyday menu, which is above anverage Imho, it's two steps above frozen bagged battered sticks or portions in grocery stores. BBDs battered cod is ok to take care of a craving. I came in with a dining partner. I just had to order the All-you -can-eat FISH fry platter. I emphasize FISH bc that's the only item that's AYCE. First platter arrived with 2.5 pieces of hot and steamy breaded fish, 3 hush puppies, onion rings (I swapped out fries) and a separate cold Cole slaw in a separate serving dish. It also came with a lemon wedge and tartar sauce. If you want refills, it's only for the FISH and only one FISH at a time. In summary the very thin layer of fish encased in a thick breading that can cut the top of one's roof top, inner cheek and tongue needs to be better. I chatted with 2 other ppl and they weren't ordering ever again. The crust was also dark colored. On my only refill, I requested a lighter fry, which it was (See pic comparison) The onion rings were breaded like fish, which became hard as rock and difficult to eat in a few minutes. The wife and I went there on the May 22 /26. I had the meatloaf and the wife had the pot roast. Both were so smothered with thick gravy you could not see the meat. My meatloaf was so thin maybe 3/8 inch, last time more than a half inch or more one slice was a quarter inch. My salde was great muffin. The wife's pot-roast was shredded no big chunks and so much gravy it was sickening not like the large servings I remember. Great chowder and muffin. Worst "corned beef hash" ever! A bunch of dried out corned beef on top of a few tiny cubes of flavorless potatoes. "Buttered" toast was equally as dry. Scrambled eggs were just OK, and the fried potatoes were dry, cold, and fairly tasteless. I was pretty much ignored once my bland meal was served. Then there was a payment device that lost the connection, and since I couldn't get anyone's attention, I paid with what cash I had. Fortunately, there I didn't have enough for much of a tip. A fun, atmospheric diner! I think the biggest stand-out for me is the atmosphere this diner gives. You have bears everywhere, from decorations to the outside statues to the curtains as well. Everything is themed to be an "outdoors"-y style with wooden chairs, tables, dividers. And the menus are newspapers, which is super cute. The people are great, both staff and diners! Shout out to Jorge for being nice and courteous, and shout out to one group of diners that hugged when meeting each other for what I assumed to have been a while since meeting. Fun environment, pleasant 80s rock music on the speaker, just nice and atmospheric! The only thing for me that didn't hit the mark was the food in my opinion, as it felt like there's more of a "presentation" instead of substance. The plates convex from the bottom to make the food "pop out", and while I got the Bear's Choice with a ham steak, two scrambled eggs, and two biscuits and gravy, I'm sure I got like four large biscuits, which took over half of the plate themselves, a quarter for the ham, and another quarter for the eggs. When you get the plate, it looks super nice! When you dig in, it starts to feel like a chore to finish. The breakfast was $20, so keep that in mind when ordering as it felt more like biscuits plus two sides of protein. Besides the food, I think if you just want a nice spot to just relax, to be with friends, and maybe share a meal, Black Bear Diner is incredibly nice to have that moment. Took too long to get our order in and too long to get our food. They messed up the order too. Missing items and bringing the wrong items. My friend and I went here on a Sunday for lunch around 2:34pm and there was no wait! I used to go to their other locations often with a group of friends, so I already knew I'd most likely like this location too. We ordered the Country Fried Steak, Fettuccine Alfredo, and a side of Biscuit. The portions of all the items we ordered are huge! Haha we were confused when the biscuit arrived to our table because of how big it was! Anyways, everything tasted good, but the biscuit was the highlight for me because of it's buttery flavor and how big it was. I also liked how creamy the Fettuccine Alfredo was, but the Country Fried Steak wasn't really what I expected. That country fried steak was still good though! I'd recommend this place! Parking lot is shared with other businesses so it makes it extremely difficult to find parking. I had to drop my family off at the door so they could get us a table while I drive around the parking lot fighting for parking. Walking in on a Saturday afternoon around 1pm you better expect a wait. This place was packed, thankfully we didn't have to wait long, no more than 5 minutes. You may not wait long for a table but once you get to your table you better not come here hungry because you will be waiting a long time for your food. Once we sat our waitress was great, friendly, polite and quick with drinks. After placing our food order, we sat and waited about 30 minutes for food, felt like an eternity because we were starving since we had just left Milpitas high school from The Music in the Park event and hadn't eaten anything. Our table was right in front of the kitchen so we were able to see plates just sitting waiting for them to be picked up by the waitresses/ waiters and at one point I looked over and I saw about four waitresses and waiters just standing at the kitchen window waiting for food to be put out. I don't know if they are understaffed or they just don't know how to manage properly but something needs to change because waiting that long for our meal I think is a little not ok. I can say the food was good. I ordered the turkey club sandwich with French Fries. You can't really mess up a sandwich! Unfortunately, I was not impressed by this restaurant as this was my first time at Black Bear Diner. I know they have locations all over the West Coast, so I was excited to try it out. We were seated immediately as a party of 5. We had to wait around 40 minutes after we ordered before we got our food. I think they forgot about it and they only started making it after we asked so that wasn't too great. - BBQ Ribs - This did not taste good as the rib quality felt very poor as it almost had a watery texture to it. - Steak - Honestly this was surprisingly good and if this was the only thing I ate here, I would have given Black Bear Diner 4 or 5 stars. The steak was actually very tender and there was a good marinate that permeated throughout the meat. - Garlic Parmesan Toast - This item was shredded cheese on top of heated toast. I thought the garlic and the parmesan flavors would be more incorporated into the toast but unfortunately not. I would not recommend it. - Italian Green Beans and Bacon - The bacon and the Italian green beans were incredibly soggy and the whole thing had too much water in it. Also, there wasn't much seasoning other than the fact that it was salty. Because of the wait after we ordered food as well as the lack of quality-tasting food, I'm not sure if I would come back unfortunately. read more
