Bearlishous! Ok y'all, forget that In-n-Out thing. Black Bear is a California diner worth going to. We have been to several and every one has served fantastic food with a smile. Breakfast all day plus burgers and more including healthy options. For this visit we each chose the Hobo Joe omelet. Huge!!! Filling! Delicious! Y'all, the "biscuit" is more like a loaf of bread! But with that biscuit fluff. The gravy is so good. The interior is like walking into a huge mountain cabin with adorable black bear pics and accents. Great food. Great music. Great service. The steak was cooked exactly as requested--juicy and flavorful--and the scrambled eggs were light and perfectly done. The fresh fruit was a refreshing and healthy addition that balanced the meal nicely. Bread was extra portion. I will remove to tell them one slice is enough in order to prevent waste. As someone focused on eating high-protein, cleaner meals, being able to swap traditional sides for eggs and fruit makes a big difference. The atmosphere is cozy and welcoming, and the staff were not that friendly throughout my visit. It might be because of it's a truck stop. I was excited that they opened here. With that. The service. It sucked. My waitress was terrible. She just had no sense of customer service. Come on. Don't let this be the norm here. This is the best Black Bear Diner location there is. They have kept most of the old wait staff from Iron Skillet but with the Black Bear Diner decor and, of course, the taste and value you've come to expect from any Black Bear Diner. Make no mistake, this is peak Truck Stop Diner. Always a good mix of friendly and busy here. Good portions that hit the spot whether or you're headed into or out of San Antonio. This was our first time ordering dinner at this restaurant. We asked the waitress to give us a few minutes because we had never ordered dinner from Black Bear diner. We decided what we wanted, but we couldn't find our waitress. She disappeared for a while. She reappeared placed our order and for some odd reason my plate came out first and then we had to wait about 10 minutesfrom My Husband's to come out. She told us that I was given somebody else's plate of food that should not have been given to me . Seeing that there was nobody else in the restaurant but three other tables and they were already served we knew that that was a lie. My plate came with a wilted lettuce on it that was dark and slimy. It was so disgusting. The salad that came out would've been OK except the little cherry tomatoes were over ripe and very squishy. They were not fresh and we got two micro, tiny cherry tomatoes per salad, must've been a shortage on cherry tomatoes that day. I had the open turkey sandwich. The turkey meat was basically a turkey lunchmeat that was so dry and had no flavor. I just took a few bites and ended up taking the whole meal home to give to my dogs. Our waitress kept disappearing and didn't ask us for any refills on our drinks or how we were doing. She was a young girl with braces and had some kind of acne issue on her face. I failed to get her name unfortunately. I would like to also mention that the short older woman that was working the front register had six people ( I counted ) waiting to order takeout food or to cash out so they could leave the restaurant. There was nobody there to help her , never saw a manager insight either . A basic diner situated within a truck-stop on San Antonio's east side off Interstate 10 eastbound. My expectations were low and this place managed to go lower. If you choose to try this place I suggest choosing basic dishes (burgers, fries, sandwiches, etc.) rather than being adventurous. I made the mistake of ordering corned beef hash. The "shredded" corned beef had the consistency of jerky. Home fries made with reheated potatoes, barely cooked purple onion and diced red peppers. No flavor and no style. Biscuits are the densest/heaviest I've ever seen. Dry and unwieldy. My breakfast was a mess...and so is Black Bear Diner. read more

Wonderful, delicious food that I would share with anyone visiting San Antonio. I had a bacon blue cheese burger that was hefty and very good! Loaded with thick-cut bacon, mushrooms and crispy, homemade onions merged with a horseradish aioli I barely finished this monster meal. Went a few times before no issues but this last time it was a horrible experience. Ordered a simple burger and a salad promised time was 4:52 got there a little early. Let them know. I was here. Waited over 45 minutes ended up leaving with my food at 5:40 had to ask them for ranch for the salad which they forgot to put in the bag. When I got home I realized them forgot part of my salad and the meat was cold, drove back and asked them to remake it, checked it in the car and was missing the boiled eggs, went back inside to ask them for it to get told they are out but they didn't mention that when they gave it to me. Didn't end up getting home until 6:30 and still ended up with an incomplete salad. Wasted my time and was charged full price for an incomplete salad. Will not be back. read more

Stopped here after our long drive to San Antonio and was not displeased. Kevin the manager of this location was our sever, he did a wonderful job! I noticed it was only him and one other worker. He was waiting tables, bussing, checking people out, answering the phone and serving people at the bar! He was amazing and made our experience wonderful, he was extremely attentive and his attitude and kindness will make this diner a place we'd like to stop by every time we visit! The food was also amazing and the cooks put out nice portions of perfectly cooked and flavorful food. 10/10 experience. read more

What was once the Iron Skillet at 1112 Ackerman Rd. is now the Black Bear Dinner. It took a few months of remodeling but, the Black Bear Dinner is now open and is doing quite well. I recently had breakfast (March 19th) there and enjoyed a great meal at a reasonable price. The decor is familiar if you've ever been to a Black Bear Diner in the past. Here, adjacent to a Shell station and truck stop, you'll find a convenience store, and themed Black Bear shop. There is indoor seating only both at a counter or, among tables and booths. I ordered the Meat Lovers Omelette with Avocado which is shown here with Hash Browns. Overall, this plate is enough to fill you up and the only drawback was it took a little bit of time for my order to reach the table. The staff are all very friendly and will work to ensure your meal is as you expected. So, try the new Black Bear Diner at Ackerman and the East I-10 Access Rd. We went for a special sneak preview the sunday before their grand opening. So we happily went to try it out - now we have never visited any of the Black Bear Diner's so this was truly our First time! We got there and got checked in - they took us to our table and once seated our waitress Christina was there right away to take our drink order. She said she was excited we were there and would help us with any questions about the menu that we might have. The menu looked great! Alot of breakfast items, lunch and dinner - of which Christina mentioned that you can get almost all items at all times of day - they open at 6am and close at 10pm. On friday nights they offer all you can eat fish and chips and Friday and Saturday nights they offer all you can eat prime rib! Wow! We both ordered a version of the Bear's Choice. I had: Scrambled eggs add cheese, bacon, waffle and a biscuit Husband had: Over easy eggs, bacon, sweet cream pancakes and a biscuit. We both had coffee to drink - it was strong and flavorful. The offer several kinds of creamer - I got French vanilla and hubby had half & half. Now let me tell you they have dedicated drink refillers that go around the whole dining room refilling drinks. I think that is nice because there is nothing worse than drinking all of your drink and it sitting empty while you eat your meal! I asked if they always have those and the answer is yes! Cool, I like it! Our food came quickly - and wow! The portions are BIG!!! The shining star was the biscuit which is the size of a softball! Yummy! our food was hot and delicious - the thick cut bacon was crispy - my waffle was dense with a little crunch when you cut with a fork and oh so tasty! I couldn't eat all of my biscuit so I was able to get a to-go container to take that bad boy home! My husband is a big guy and he couldn't finish a triangle cut of his last pancake.
