We went for a special sneak preview the sunday before their grand opening. So we happily went to try it out - now we have never visited any of the Black Bear Diner's so this was truly our First time! We got there and got checked in - they took us to our table and once seated our waitress Christina was there right away to take our drink order. She said she was excited we were there and would help us with any questions about the menu that we might have. The menu looked great! Alot of breakfast items, lunch and dinner - of which Christina mentioned that you can get almost all items at all times of day - they open at 6am and close at 10pm. On friday nights they offer all you can eat fish and chips and Friday and Saturday nights they offer all you can eat prime rib! Wow! We both ordered a version of the Bear's Choice. I had: Scrambled eggs add cheese, bacon, waffle and a biscuit Husband had: Over easy eggs, bacon, sweet cream pancakes and a biscuit. We both had coffee to drink - it was strong and flavorful. The offer several kinds of creamer - I got French vanilla and hubby had half & half. Now let me tell you they have dedicated drink refillers that go around the whole dining room refilling drinks. I think that is nice because there is nothing worse than drinking all of your drink and it sitting empty while you eat your meal! I asked if they always have those and the answer is yes! Cool, I like it! Our food came quickly - and wow! The portions are BIG!!! The shining star was the biscuit which is the size of a softball! Yummy! our food was hot and delicious - the thick cut bacon was crispy - my waffle was dense with a little crunch when you cut with a fork and oh so tasty! I couldn't eat all of my biscuit so I was able to get a to-go container to take that bad boy home! My husband is a big guy and he couldn't finish a triangle cut of his last pancake. I don't want to be too disparaging but I was expecting better. I've been to Black Bear Diner in other states and also the one in Katy and loved it. This just isn't the same. I'm guessing because it's smaller and in a truck stop. They're under staffed for the business they had on a Sunday afternoon. I could tell they were doing their best. The floors were filthy with past patrons dropped food and it took forever for us to receive our order. I don't believe we got any refills either. It was ok. We got the chicken fried steak dinner, and it is a lot of food. We ordered the fries, mashed potatoes, and soup. The portions were large. Honestly, had I known the portions were that big, I would have only ordered one for my wife and I to share. My wife loved everything. I was not a fan of the mashed potatoes. They had good flavor, but I do not like them lumpy with skins. They make mashed potatoes the right way, but because of my texture issues, I prefer instant potatoes. The country gravy is very good. Unlike some restaurants, they got that one correct. I am not a fan of cornbread, but theirs is amazing. The muffins are big, fluffy, moist, and soft. There is a slight sweetness to them. Our daughter got the tenders and fries. She really liked them. We didn't get dessert, but they have several options, and the portions were big. My wife and I went into the restaurant to have breakfast. We were sat at table 38 by our receipt. Our server was Taylor. She rudely came up to us and just gave us our menus and asked what do you want to drink. We kindly said give us a minute. She rudely said ok and walked off. We waited for about 15 mins for our server to come back. Another server was passing by and we asked if we can get something to drink. The server's name was Jennifer and with a smile she said what would you like. We got our drinks and Jennifer said Taylor will be with us shortly. Soon after Taylor came back to our table. With an attitude she said are y'all ready to order something. We said yes and gave her our order. As we sat there wairing for our plates, not once did Taylor come by and check on us or asked if we were alright. The supervisor I believe that was working at the time came by to check on us. Her name was Naomi she was kind and sweet. We told her that our server Taylor hasn't came by to check on us. Another server named Jennifer got us refills. Naomi told us she was sorry about that and that she will go check on our food. Not even 5 mins passed she came back with our food. Again Naomi apologized to us and told us to enjoy. Ooooweee is this place delicious. The location will throw you off because it's inside a truck stop off the interstate. I think this add charm. I came during the middle of the week and this diner keeps a crowd for a reason. I came with my aunt for brunch and we left satisfied. Serving sizes are massive and great quality. This place has shockingly good food and stellar service. This diner is the real deal! The servers are incredibly friendly ( shout out to Christina our server). The food was plentiful. They have the best grits in San Antonio, perfectly seasoned and correct consistency-heaven! The biscuit and gravy are HUGE, the gravy also well seasoned and the biscuit was perfectly baked. The dining room was clean and they bussed the tables as soon as a guest left. Nice. Other niceties included 5 different types of hot sauces. I always attempt to find a Black Bear Diner on Fri nites for the All-U-Can eat fish!! I didn't end up doin that, but I did go in for breakfast this morning!! Immediately greeted & seated! While serving our table, she busted the table of 10 with little to no help, following by seating another table of 8 at the table she just busted. Came in for dinner and had the Friday night fish and chips. Coleslaw looked like cabbage sat out for awhile since it was black. The fish was to fishy taste and soggy. Fries were lightly salted but could have being crisper. My partner had a burger that was good. Place was clean and lots of room. Long story short Service is good But the food itself was just not the same like the other locations. So my gf ordered the breakfast country fried steak & the hashbrown was stale & soaked in oil. Looked like it was sitting around then they just decided to just put it out. At 7:45 this morning I placed an $100+ order thru Uber Eats like I have in the past with no problems. 3 - 4 different drivers went one after the other to pick up my order and each time the order wasn't ready. At 9:10, my order was cancelled by Black Bear without my approval. When I contacted Uber Eats to ask what gives, they said that the restaurant claimed that I cancelled the order. I DID NOT cancel the order and up to that moment I was still waiting for it. As of now, my bank account is still showing the full charge even though the order is cancelled. Excellent food, large portions, great service. You would receive a 5 rating but for the two times I have been to this location and ordered grits. I've had to send them back each time to reheat as they have been dry and cold. No problems at the City Base location that always has "creamy grits" as advertised. Everything else has been excellent. I will give you a "5" if the grits improve next time I am here. Maybe the cooks here are not aware of the "creamy" texture the grits are supposed to have. Time for management to step up. read more
