Had another amazing breakfast at Black Bear diner in Vancouver. There were four of us and we all enjoyed our meals very much. The portions are ginormous, so if you're not a big eater, there's more than enough to share a meal. My daughter and I shared the Shasta Scramble and even between the two of us only ate about 2/3 of it. It was very good and we had the thick cut hashbrowns as our side which we both enjoyed. The biscuit came with this is what we called a "cat's head" biscuit in the south...very big, and even better with butter and honey. Waitstaff on top of everything and kept our coffee filled with deliciousness. This place is adorably, decorated with little bears all over and camping themes. Hoping to go back for lunch or dinner sometime soon. Sure do wish they had a location on the west side of town; it's quite a trek for me. read more

Never again- feels depressing being here! Yikes...floors were messy and felt a bit chaotic when we arrived and were seated. It's been years since eating at a Black Bear franchise- last one was in Arizona. Feels like it's tired and it needs refreshing- the atmosphere and the menu. Our food came out much too quickly- Meaning it's all pre- prepared and sitting in warming dishes like a buffet. And, it was buffet quality- bland and lackluster in flavor. We ate lunch here after arriving in Vancouver since it was close to our hotel. The front desk person at our hotel recommended this place so off we went. The restaurant's ambiance is a cross between a restaurant and a lodge, and the effect works. There is ample free parking although in retrospect we should have just walked from the hotel, but we did not know. We were starving after our flight. Our waitress recommended the pot roast so I went with that. I had intended to eat only fresh fish while in the Northwest but I was not sure this diner was the place for fish. The pot roast was excellent! The meat was fall apart tender, the mashed potatoes were fresh and not from a box, and the brown gravy tied everything together. Everything was well seasoned and very flavorful. That was a great recommendation! The fresh corn on the cob was sweet and cooked perfectly. The wife opted for cod which came as large fried pieces like fish sticks, except triangular. The cod was fresh and she loved it. The fries were a disappointment, however, because they were not crispy. The kid had chocolate chip pancakes (they serve breakfast all day) and said they were the best she ever had. We finished with apple pie which was good but not quite as good as I expected. Our server was super friendly and helpful. Excellent service. The four stars are for soggy fries and a good but not great apple pie. The rest of the experience was excellent. I am not sure we will return because we have just a few days and lots of other places to try. But if we do return, I will not object. read more

This is a standard American food restaurant with a black bear theme. Its rustic decor is pretty kitschy but the 4 year old that was with us loved it. We went for breakfast and it was pretty good. I had the Shasta scramble which was full of veggies and came with hash browns and a biscuit. The biscuit was huge, dry and heavy. I wouldn't choose that option again. The 4 year old had the teddy bear pancake and loved it. It was pretty cute. One person with us ordered the chicken and waffles with poached eggs. The waitress for got to bring them. She finally did and apologized for forgetting. Other than that, the service was fine. This isn't an upscale spot but if you want rustic and "American" you might like this place. read more

Goiing out for Christmas breakfast is a huge tradition for us, and Black Bear Diner absolutely saved the day! After our previous go-to spot Shari's went downhill with all the mass closures, we were thrilled to find Black Bear open. The service was incredibly quick and friendly, and the overall ambiance was normal, even for a holiday. They were running a limited menu, but it had all our favorites. I have tried this restaurant twice (once for lunch, once for dinner) both times I was not impressed. The food is just ok, doesn't seem particularly fresh, maybe a lot of frozen ingredients I'm guessing. The biggest problem was with the small staff. They need more employees (tables were not being bussed, one waitress handling half of the restaurant, not sure what was happening in the kitchen but the food took FOREVER to come out). It's unfortunate cause we loved the Black Bear Diner back in California so I know the potential is there. This location just needs new management possibly. I would definitely try it again if I hear they fix these issues. Two stars for the ambiance and cozy log cabin esthetic. read more

The good: lots of food choices, and generous portions. The bad: service was sloooow. Took 45 mins just to get our food. Another 20 for the waitress to come back so we could let her know she brought the wrong order. There were roughly 10 staff standing around grabbing food orders from the kitchen - seemingly confused. Food was mediocre. Definitely NOT worth the wait. The cherry on the cake? The bathrooms were disgustingly filthy with body fluids all over the floors and toilets. Also no soap available. Had we seen this before we sat down we would have immediately left. Unfortunately we used the restrooms on our way out. I don't care what's going on in a restaurant. If you have staff and management that don't ensure cleanliness of a bathroom, I'm willing to bet your kitchen is just as nasty. More importantly - how is staff cleaning their hands after using the bathroom and serving food? Zero way I'd ever come back here to eat. read more

We visited Black Bear Diner on Christmas Day with a large party. We understood it would be busy and were quoted a 30-minute wait, but after waiting over two hours with no updates, we ultimately had to leave. What was most upsetting was the manager's behavior. She was extremely rude and unprofessional, not only toward customers but also toward her own staff. At one point, she threw the waitlist notepad, making employees visibly uncomfortable. Watching staff--many of whom appeared to be BIPOC--be treated this way was disturbing. Additionally, the way our party was handled felt noticeably different from how other guests were treated, particularly white customers who were spoken to more respectfully or seated sooner. This left us feeling singled out and uncomfortable. Black Bear Diner promotes values of hospitality, respect, and a welcoming, family-friendly environment. Unfortunately, this experience did not reflect those values at all. Being busy on a holiday is understandable; disrespectful and unequal treatment is not. If they had a negative Star grade. Ok Sugar Bear, here's my take. First, Kara E was was a delightful server. Prompt, attentive, interactive, friendly and checked off all the up-take offers of drinks and dessert without being awkward. Second, I tried the all-you-can-eat fish dinner. Honestly, I was expecting a flashback to my grammer school days of rectangular fish sticks. Much to my surprise I got huge strips of moist fish coated with the tastiest, crunch breading I've ever had. I should have stopped with the 2 fish covering my plate but just had to order a 3rd to truely eat-all-I-could. You didn't get the 5th star because the clam chowder my wife ordered had a raw flour taste with the same consistency and the Iced Tea was super diluted (which Kara quickly remedied with a fresh glass). But all-in-all, I'll defintely be back for the fish. read more

The rating remains the same. I enjoyed their breakfast. Unlike other breakfast restaurants, they don't overcook their meat. Of course, I forgot that I could split my bacon with sausage. My husband upgraded his meat to two patty sausages for an extra $1.99. They are very good. I think I will get them next time. I know their pancakes are denser than other breakfast places. This time, they seemed even denser. My husband tried their French toast instead, which is better than their pancakes. We both agree that we should try the biscuit and gravy next time. Their coffee is very good. I wish i could buy the cup :) However, getting the server to give me refills was rather difficult. read more

If we could give this location more than 5 stars we would. The food is always delicious and by far the best Black Bear Diner we've ever been to. Lacey was an EXCELLENT server. On a Friday all you can eat fish and fried chicken dinner. My fried chicken was so small wings look like chicken nuggets drumsticks look like carrots stick, breast look like a thigh and thigh had to much breading and my wife had the fish to it had a lot of breading to she burned her mouth it was hot. My friend and I had breakfast and it was very delicious. I recommend black bear diner definitely for breakfast. We usually walk out with no problems. Our recent trip was a bit of a whirlwind. We were waiting for our bill. Come to find out someone closed our bill out on a different couple. So, we paid their bill. Not done yet! We walked out of there with pies, not sure if we paid (husband paid the bill). As we were leaving he said I don't think we paid what we should have. Reading everyone else's reviews makes me feel like I'm crazy.... This place has no business having as many stars as it currently holds. The server was super nice but the food quality vs cost is so out of wack that it hurts. 4 pieces of bacon is over 6 dollars... a lemonade is 5 dollars. The pancakes were too vanilla extract-y. The biscuit was crouton-hard on 5 sides. All the heavy lifting of the gravy was done by cornstarch. The mashed potatoes are rehydrated and heavy on the starch ratio. The website photos vs actual food is wild. I mean, you expect some degree of marketing magic but this degree of deviation is wild. The onion rings were great though! Went to BBD between Xmas and new year. The food was only mediocre. If you order hot tea ask for hot water. Ours was only Luke warm. The pancakes were very tough. The thing was we were charged the bill for a table of six, we only had two in our party. Lesson learned never pay a bill if you aren't presented and review a paper bill. I tried to give them a second chance for Christmas after my horrible Thanksgiving experience and they did it again. All the things that were missing on Thanksgiving were missing on Christmas. I ordered a prime rib Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner because I ended up having nowhere to go I figured I'd order a prime rib dinner from here. That was a huge mistake that only made me feel less appreciated. The prime rib was missing the AU Jus and the horseradish, it was also missing the cornbread muffin and the salad had no dressing and no whipped cream on the Pumpkin pie,it ruined the whole meal. The country gravy was also missing this was a horseshit job totally. It was a delivery order and of course they were closed after. I would never order from this place again and I suggest that unless you want to be disappointed you don't either. Just awful. There was nothing good about my meal. I ordered: Biscuits and Gravy - Nothing like I'm used to, having a lived in the south. The gravy was instant gravy like you get from a dried packet of powder, no sausage or anything, and the biscuits were dry, awkward half crunchy chunks of old cold bread. Really didn't even taste like food. Pot Roast Sandwich - This was the least of the bad. They tried to spiff it up by melting cheese onto the outside of the bread, but all this did was result in a burned, crunchy hard layer of cheese that really wanted to cut up your gums if not break a tooth. The meat and onions inside were good but cold, like it was just taken out of the fridge and half microwaved. It came with upgraded sweet potatoe fries (for an extra buck). I couldn't eat more than a couple. They were soggy and saturated with old cooking oil and zero crisp. Worst of all, they were burned, adding that bitter charcoal flavor to them. Utterly disgusting. Banana Cream Pie - 90% stale whipped cream, 5% instant banana flavored pie filling, 5% Graham cracker crumbs. The picture on the menu makes this look like a full size pie. It's not. It's a mini-pie. And it's all whipping cream, no actual banana at all. The crust wasn't a crust but crumbs that felt like gravel had fallen into the pie. The desert left a thick coating of grease stuck to the inside of my mouth and a sickening feeling in my stomach. For nearly $40, this meal really had no value. It didn't satisfy me in any metric and made me feel cheated, and tricked. McDonald's would have been a better meal for half the money, I exaggerate not. Buyer beware! read more

Ok we received a gift card to Black Bear so today is the day. We bring with us our huge appetites and hungry eyes. Sundays are there busy days. As expected the pap e was packed. Fortunately, parties of two get seated pretty quickly. We eating all of 5 minutes. There were other larger parties eating after we were seated. Our servers were polite and expeditious, they they moved with pace and purpose. But things went a little side ways when the waitress came back to our table after taking our order informing us that she couldn't find our order. 30 minutes into our wait time. Hmmmm We both ordered the bears choice. I order sausage patties, eggs over medium and waffles and strawberries. I received scrambled eggs, French toast and sausage patties. I did let them know about the error but I settled on what they brought me this the lowers rating. The breakfast was ok but the wait time and the missed items on my order bring their score tow a three. Our waitress was really nice about things but it is what it is. read more
