Sabrina was an awesome server. She hurried to get our small order in to the cooks before a group of 50 in the banquet room. We have eaten at this restaurant before so we knew what we wanted. We got the smaller portions even though they are still big enough for two meals. I think their prices are fair. We were seated in a comfy booth. They have different sized booths and tables. The food was good--didn't need extra seasoning. We got chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and gravy, meatloaf, cornbread muffins, and steamed veggies (broccoli and carrots) with dinner salads. We didn't get dessert (rarely do we have room for more food), but their pies looked delicious. I like how they list the calorie content for each item. They offered military discounts on Veterans Day. Nice. The one thing that ended up being really bad was their tight parking spaces. Our regular truck wouldn't fit in several spaces because of the way goofs parked, so we parked on an end. Our truck doors still were too wide to open them much because of the car next to it. Then on the way back, I slipped on the curb next to our truck and fell on the sharp rocks. We LOVE to eat at the Black Bear Diner. However, this was our first visit to this particular diner and in the end, I was disappointed. Typically, we eat breakfast at Black Bear Diner. But we arrived in town around dinner time and thought we'd try it. We ordered the pot roast dinner. Not only did it take awhile (not uncommon these days), but the pot roast and veggies were room temperature and the meat somewhat dry. The proportions were great, but I'm not a fan of cold food that's supposed to be served hot. And the flavor itself was lacking, more on the side of bland. We took home leftovers and I heated it up the next night thinking it would be better hot. Nope. So I hope they figure it out and restore whatever cooking techniques and talents they need to make great tasting food again. Perhaps it was the dish we ordered? Food was standard Black Bear (excellent as usual)... Fresh, well-prepared, good portions. Service was friendly. One of issues were utensils. How does one serve food without providing utensils? Not just my table, but several in my area. Having to stare at your food for a few minutes after being served... yes, its a small issue, but its kind of an annoying thing, especially at a restaurant. Another thing was masks, and while I think masks (in general) are worn just for show as most masks aren't really rated to stop viral particles, as a business you should stick to your own policies. If you make it a policy to wear masks, enforce it on your own employees. The whole time we were watching people preparing food, washing plates... Not a mask in site. Or the one fellow that chose to protect his chin instead of mouth and nose the whole hour we were there. Some servers didn't bother to cover their nose. Consistency would be key if they really cared... All the while the manager never once corrected any of the employees. read more

When I first walked in, my initial thoughts were of how cute the diner was: everything from the furniture that looked like it was made from logs to the menus that resembled newspapers. It wasn't until later that I realized the restaurant was a chain because it had such a homey feel to it with some of the nicest waitresses I've ever encountered. My day had been off to a very exhausting start, but stopping at the Black Bear Diner really brightened my mood. The food was delicious and really warmed me up on a chilly day. Simple two egg breakfast with hash browns, bacon and a sweet cream pancake cold again. I keep trying Black Bear for breakfast thinking surely post pandemic they could get this simple breakfast menu item hot enough to eat, but no. Tried again today and I could not eat the pancake, it was like they pre cooked it, took it out of fridge and put it on the grill with my hash browns and bacon. My order came out so fast I assumed the pancake, hash browns and bacon were pre made and just in some type of warmer, more like a fridge, and served up when my eggs were done. Stopped in mid-roadtrip while my electric vehicle was charging across the street. Super friendly service. Tried the tri-tip dip... YUM!!! One of the very best French dip-style sandwiches I've had in years! The bread is divine and it was toasted, so it added an awesome crunchy texture to the sandwich. And the portion size was huge! I loved it so much that I stopped in again when I was heading home during my roadtrip. Got the same sandwich, but the bread wasn't toasted. It was still delicious, but I did miss that crunch. Once again, the service was friendly, the restaurant is clean, and now I know where I'll be stopping every time I'm traveling between UT and LV. read more

This is a clean and peaceful restaurant in Washington. The pancakes are always delightful. I generally order the Volcano Jr. What I used to do was order the full Volcano but i now find the Jr is better for me. If i want something different I will try the New York Steak. We were traveling through on our way to Zion and stopped for dinner, what a great experience!!! We had the Pot Pie, The roast beef, the roasted turkey and the open face turkey sandwich. Ordered Ny strip medium rare. Was well done. Finally received another one, which was medium rare, but the quality of meat was terrible. We ended up taking it home to our dogs. Just by chance, found this eatery. Familiar with this franchises name from dining in California. The restaurant is newly built, very modern decor and clean. We were greeted by a friendly hostess who gave us the sitting option of a table or booth. We chose the table and our server , offered us drinks I don't remember seeing name tags or hearing their names. Both ladies were very cordial. Our food consist of the Cheese burger salad with ranch and bleu cheese dressings and a Cheeseburger sandwich with French fries. Pepsi products were offered, but we choose ice water. The food came out in a timely manner. Presentation was good ! The salad had the "Wow "factor, as the dish looked very hearty and filling. The Cheeseburger also had a beautiful look with fresh green lettuce, red tomato and American cheese, it was accompanied with French fries in a red plastic basket. The fries we're a disappointment, as they were cold and soggy! I asked for a fresh hot serving, and was pleased with the replacement fries which were perfect! Our waitress was very efficient , checked to make sure all was good a few times and offered to refill our drinks too! Good service and food! I would like to make it clear that I truly hate to be "that Hispanic" who pulls the race card. But I truly hands down have never felt so humiliated, outraged and hurt by the way my family and I where treated. We where first treated by a nice gentlemen who took the time to welcome us to our first (and last time) to the Black Bear Diner. We where then helped by our waitress Rachel, who at first seemed nice enough to bring us our coffees and waters and took our orders. As we waited, my son, husband and myself watched how 5 families of more than 4+ people where being seated around us and helped right away. 30 mins later the first family next to us of 7 people where served their food, I brushed it off as "there salads and fruit so there quicker to serve". Then plates started to pour into EVERY SINGLE FAMILY. All the while my son is watching them and asking me, "when is ours coming ?" And I tried various time to make eye contact with our waitress and she seemed to be avoiding me! Letting us know that it will be soon. Seriously? As a waitress it's only common Sense that if a family of 3 who came before all these other large parties aren't served. There's obviously something wrong! An hour and a half later she tells us that our receipt was misplaced. I convinced my lil family to give them 10 mins more. 30 mins later she tells us it's going to be out soon. That's when I truly felt like I was slapped in the face. I paid for my food, took it to go and ate with my small family in our car in 90 degree weather. OK, so yesterday (8/13/18) we tried our first Black Bear Diner, at the new location in Washington City, Utah. It was a mixed experience. New place was fresh and clean, with no sign of the grouchy manager and server(s) others have reported. Server Lyndsay (always cheerful) was quick to take drink orders and explain the menu (three different colored sections). She agreed to allow me to taste a little potato salad (awful) before deciding on my side, and I immediately opted for the fries (crispy) to accompany my Parmesan Sourdough Cheeseburger. Spousal unit ordered the Tri-Tip-Dip, with fries (also crispy). So far, so good. With excited anticipation, we waited. And waited. Exactly 25 minutes after ordering our two sandwiches (place was sparsely populated), our food arrived (yes, I was taking detailed notes). That's when things took a turn for the worse. Our crispy fries were ample, slightly brown, and limp and soggy. I left about half of mine, and ate the least soggy ones. Spousal unit left all of hers. No, we did not send them back, as we had enough time already invested. My burger also had arrived less well cooked than I had expected (I was two bites in when that became evident). I am accustomed to places that only cook hamburger one way, well done (Red Robin, etc.), so I did not think to specify. To be fair, the menu made no mention of the need to specify, and Lyndsay did not ask me to specify, thus I blundered on. No, I did not send it back (see above). Upon checking out I chatted with the manager on duty (Robbi) who explained that their "default" mode of cooking hamburger is medium, which explained why I was surprised by my burger. Next time (yes, there will be a second chance) I'll specify "well done" for burgers, and "extra, extra crispy" for my fries. I won't be forgiving if the food comes out like the first time, I'll immediately send it back, and hope it doesn't take another 25 minutes for a replacement. They do deserve a second chance, and I hope the next time will be better. Stay tuned. read more

What a horrible place. Definitely not like other black bears. Stood there waiting for a table for over 10 minutes while waiters and waitresses stood around talking. Looked directly at me and turned their backs as if I wasn't there. Not the first time it happened but this will be the last time. I will never step foot in this place again. "Good things come to those who wait". Not always. Lunch Friday, September 14th. Hoping the kinks would be out and a smooth, effortless running of this establishment would now be the norm...we 3 ventured out. I don't recall ever giving a facility a 2 without cleanliness and sanitation being an issue. Neither were issues at the newest Black Bear Diner in Washington. The positives...ambiance, cleanliness, attention to customers, variety of menu, all were satisfactory as expected. There is plenty of parking and handicap parking is accessible. Noise level makes conversations easy. There was no line to wait. Black Bear's repeat diners know the quality of this comfort food. Any new franchise owner merely has to fall in line and give customers what they know and expect. Having said this it came as a disappointment when a tiny issue of "biscuit or no biscuit" seemed to set the tone of where this establisment could be headed on subjective/judgment calls. On deeper inspection I see lack of experience and hospitality knowledge (heck even just plain old customer service) as the root of the problem. This simple request need not have escalated had the waiter been allowed to make the judgement call. Micromanaging was the order of the day as a request for a biscuit/roll to accompany the turkey dinner (Turkey, gravy, mashed potatoes, mixed veggies, cranberry sauce). Derek didn't make the decision but said it had to be charged $2.39? Ridiculous. All she was hoping for was stuffing/dressing. Alas only at Thanksgiving. If I were the waitstaff I'd wonder if my tip might be in jeopardy. But he passed the buck along to the next level to not rectify but assert 'policy'...along came Mitch. He informs us they "can't just give away stuff"...I reminded him (I have eaten in restaurants all over the globe) that he wasn't giving anything away. His markup covers even poorly made decisions. We could afford the darn roll/biscuit so would they please bring it and add to the bill. It ain't over folks...Here comes the head muskateer...the manager Collin (Wong, son of the original St George Main Street facility). He wants to know if we have a problem with our bill $40. (2 coffees, 1 rootbeer, above turkey dinner, 1 bowl clam chowder, and an Asian salad w/chicken) oops and the add on biscuit/roll). He repeats policy of biscuit (can't locate on menu this being the case). When advised it wasn't that great (hard outside, not fluffy inside). He decides to remove from bill. No senior discounts, although there is a military discount of 15%. Don't you think this could have been resolved before three paragraphs. Upon leaving my 88 year old veteran uncle (former chef, part time Atlantic Ocean fisherman) puts his 2 cents on the watery, clam rationed soup. Alas, his last visit. My Asian Salad w/ chicken was just adequate. Nothing special. The turkey dinner mentioned above had great turkey, congealed gravy, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, and mixed veggies. If the bread situation had not have taken over the meal (and time of 3 employees) the turkey could have been reheated and meal would have been salvaged. Wait still received a 15% tip in cash. We both ordered a "small" dinner - tri-tip (which was quite chewy) and chicken-fried steak (which was good). Potatoes, gravy and green beans were delicious. Amount of food was plenty. We had salads and sandwiches and they were very good. Great service and kept checking on us to make sure everything was good. She served us sweet tea by mistake but brought us unsweetened tea as soon as we asked. Brand new building and everything is so nice and new. We love all the neat bear pictures on the walls an outside. Plenty of parking and even parking area for motorcycles and RVs in the back. Easy to find off of I15 and WASHINGTON parkway. read more
