I got off work early on Friday and, since state parks are now open, my husband and I decided to drive to Cerrillos Hills State Park and do a little hiking. We realized that we wouldn't get back to Madrid in time to eat there so we planned to head up to Santa Fe and get takeout. As we drove into Cerrillos, I spotted the Black Bird Saloon and remembered seeing it on Yelp; we decided that it was still open when we were done hiking we would go there for dinner. Fortunately for us, they were open and doing a brisk business. The saloon is fantastic; it's in a historic building with an antique wooden bar, wooden floors, a pot-bellied stove, and some creative artwork. The tables out front were full, but one opened up while we were waiting for our order, so we were able to sit outside on the patio next to the heaters and enjoy our meal. Let's talk about the food! My husband had the Old World Swine burger - wild boar topped with back bacon, house-made apple and onion jam, and an Irish whiskey cheddar sauce with a bit of a kick to it. It was really tasty. I loved my Ortiz sandwich - roasted lamb served in naan with tomatoes, cucumber, greens, grated Iberico cheese, and a yogurt sauce. It was delicious and I'd happily eat it again. We skipped the alcohol offerings since we had to drive home, but they have a really nice selection of wines and New Mexico beers. If you're driving the Turquoise Trail, be sure to stop at the Black Bird and enjoy a delicious meal. read more

Doesn't look like much when you drive by however this is one of the coolest western bars with food on this side of town, it's down the road from all the popular shops and restaurants in Madrid. The decor of the bar is rustic with tables nicely spread out, the small patio has two tables and the front doors remained open. Also kid friendly. Beer is cold, the food was delicious, some unique dishes like the lamb sandwich and the pastrami are a must try! If you're in the area you should definitely drop in. read more

Awesome little saloon just off the road in Los Cerillos. Definitely worth a visit for anyone driving between ABQ and Santa Fe. Really fresh and simple food made with love. I had a burger and a side of "raw slaw" - which was amazing. The lady ordered the avocado tacos and the house made chips. Both outstanding. Also had a couple nice pints of beer and some chocolate peanut butter cookies. This place is really a gem, set inside a very authentic saloon in an f mining town of maybe 200 people. So stop on in and give these guys some business. And then go hit the mining museum / petting zoo around the corne. It's wild. UPDATE: I've now been to Black Bird 3 times and it has not disappointed. This place is the real deal. I got the Lamb Pita - it was off the hook. So good. I might need another one before I leave this great state. read more

It's got a comfortable, Wild West artsy, funkiness with a surprising elegance, because it's all about quality. And the ambience. It's a whole experience, as you walk into a truly historical site and into an old Saloon, there is a lot to take in. The vibe is relaxed and always a good choice of music playing on the speakers. Seating is inside and outside. Take look around you and you will also see a mini grocery. You can buy your fresh local meat right there, for tomorrow evening's supper. I do. One rule you need to know, as you will be so over stimulated by the ambience and space. You just need to be sure you read the menu above you on the black board. It's a simple and easy setup. but it can take a moment to realise this. Must stop here when visiting Madrid mining town cruising through the back ways of NM from ABQ to Santa Fee! Its a five minute trip past antiquity and arts-shopping with a "cow crossing warning sign" and UFO warning to this saloon-eatery - a food stop famous for bikers and world tourists alike. The interior looks like a snap back in history, with a great bar. Clean, full bar and modern kitchen! What makes it worthy my recommendation is the chef. Husband/Wife teaming up to serve us delicious Elk Burgers and a WAGU Beef-Pastrami Sandwiches that were from heaven. Very happy we decided to get breakfast here instead of Madrid. The atmosphere, service, and food were outstanding. We had the green chili burrito, breakfast bowl with black rice, 2 gerdes sandwiches, the cheese plate and sausage sampler with charred jalapeños. This is a terrific little place that offers great food served up among tons of atmosphere. The restaurant has a 1800s cowboy vibe, with a hint of mystery. You place your order at the bar and they bring it to your table. The menu is interesting and the service is friendly. They have a nice selection of beer & wine. I had the green chile cheeseburger, aka "El Chivato", with house-made chips. It was delicious and satisfying. I'm looking forward to trying the rest of the menu (which includes breakfast). This cozy restaurant is located in a very historical mining town and you can't help to admire it's rustic old town saloon decor typical of western movies. One hour and 35 minute wait for an okay-ish hamburger. No real service per se..find a table snd set it yourself from a utensil station of dubious sanitation. Order at the counter, pay in advance and wait. We were informed the food could take an hour..okay. but 95 minutes? After an hour and a quarter I went into a diabetic low sugar crisis. My wife begged for some chips or a few fries on a plate and explained the urgency. 15 minutes later...nothing. she went back and explained to staff again, and the response was "well you did not say it was an emergency" which is utter nonsense. The food finally came just as we were getting ready to head to urgent care. I ate enough to stabilize, and when able we left. We are never going back. The experience was awful, snd unnecessary. Ambiance, service and quality of food makes this 5 stars for me. We went here a year ago and loved it so much we knew we needed to come back on our next trip. Got the locally sourced burger (and some of the best bacon you'll have). Takes a little while to cook (not a bad thing), just make sure you're not in a rush. Will be back and recommend it easily. Loved the Black Bird Saloon. Patrick, one of the owners, was very hospitable, kind and made great suggestions as to what to order. The space is nice, and the food was awesome. We loved everything we ate from the pimento cheese toast to the horseradish/avocado tacos to the shoestring fries to the house-made chips to the sweet pickles to the green chile angus burger to the black angus burger (forgetting the name). Stopped in to the Black Bird saloon a few weeks ago after hiking with my nephew and was not disappointed. I had an amazing hamburger, I believe it was elk or bison, I cannot remember but it was fantastic. I am not a fan of shoe string fries - usually, but the Black Bird gets them right. My nephew had an amazing take on a Monte Cristo sandwich that was fabulous. Every thing was amazing, the beer was cold, service was great, and the food is delicious. The own is extremely friendly and gave great menu recommendations. Highly recommend you stop in and try this local gem! read more

New spot to try, Cerrillos has been hot and cold with ideas, this one is a winner. Friday morning we arrived at the opening, 10:00 AM. A very simple layout at this rustic building w/ tables inside and out. You order at the counter from a menu on the blackboard. Our order was the first item on the menu (good place to start). It was a breakfast sandwich with thick bacon, tomato, slice of gouda cheese and a fried egg served on a bun. It came out on a blue enamelware plate with matching coffee cup. Coffee was served from a French press, pretty high end for this little village. We don't know how long this place has been open, but if they keep up what they are doing they have a good future in this spot. read more

I had a 100% wild elk burger that was moist and delicious, packed with flavor and they have a very unique thin-cut French fry we really enjoyed; home-made pickles and farm-raised, free range scrambled eggs. A wide array of carefully sourced ingredients. Several fun brews on tap to enjoy! They've done a great job converting and restoring the old building into a functional cafe/saloon and yet retained a lot of the original elements that makes the place so unique. It's a real treat and a beautiful drive. The owner was friendly and passionate about his business. If you're heading out to Madrid, make sure you stop at Black Bird Saloon a few miles up the road in Cerillos for lunch or dinner. The owner is very friendly and welcoming. The restaurant is a historic saloon that was lovingly renovated keeping all the charm and history. The lamb pita was excellent - the meat was thinly sliced, the yogurt sauce was great and the bread was warm and tasty. We also ordered a salad which was really good with some interesting red peppers that we've never tried before and the perfect amount of dressing. The only complaint I'd have is that the salad needs to be chopped into smaller pieces but that was easy enough for us to do. Overall, if you're looking for a wonderful place for food, good conversation, and an old-timey vibe, make this stop, it's worth it! read more

There are not enough stars to give this place. It was our second visit and we loved it just as much if not more--both for the ambience and the food! Most of us would never expect to find such quality food in a tiny mountain town. They have taken a historic old storefront and brought it back to life in the most tasteful, loving way! We knew my mother in law from France would love it, so we brought her. She did and commented there was not a single thing that didn't exude taste. Great old building with lots of history. The menu is very heavy on red meat dishes. Would love to see a chicken sandwich on the menu. The one vegetarian entree on their menu wasn't available when we went. They had a substitute but it wasn't as attractive. Personally, I don't enjoy having to stand on line to order dinner, and prefer table service. I will say their fries were awesome! It's definitely a place I will go back to for a beer and a snack, but not my type of restaurant for dinner. read more
