really good food, but imo not worth the price. we came here for a birthday party and they were able to all 9 of us in one table, which is much appreciated. service was super friendly but not very attentive. it took a long time to get our orders in but she was REALLY good when she was around. I'd recommend going for the prix fixe menu if you want to be satiated. portions are small bc of the quality of the dishes so if you only get one thing you're still gonna be hungry. I'm not sure if it was out party size but it took quite a while for each course to come out. we stayed a total of 2.5 hours. This new restaurant was on my radar, so my friend and I met up here last month to check it out. The restaurant is small, but quaint and very pretty. I love the decor of the bar area- it is very festive! Our server gave us the option to do the prix fixe menu, which is a 4-course meal for $69. We weren't too hungry to go with that option, so she ordered a niner to start with. Some kind of amuse bouch was brought out to us, which was pretty tasty. We decided to share the roasted pork belly, which was on the bar snacks menu. I wasn't sure if that was only available at the bar, but was glad we were able to order it. It was a little too fatty for me, but tasted yummy. Next, came the lobster toast, which was delightful, although I was wary about the lobster being raw. Our main course was the duck breast, which had sauteed summer vegetables, and parsnip puree. The presentation was on point and the dish was delicious. For dessert, we were given complimentary bites of some house made marshmallows. It came with some kind of popping thing that was interesting. FIRST: They had an appetizer special tonight- king crab poached in butter with a saffron aioli. Definitely worth the extra $10 upgrade. Nothing like eating a huge chunk of crab without having to remove shell. Crab was fresh and poached to perfection. FIRST: Beef tartare- was his favorite. Beef was diced ever so finely with fresh microgreens. Amusebouche- tempura fried halibut with cacho chili vinegarette. Delicious and intricate. SECOND: Salad- every piece was arranged with much care. I didn't know they could slice apple that thin. What skill! The whole salad was flavorful with dressing, but not drippy or soggy at all. SECOND: potato leek soup with caviar. The soup was very smooth, just-right seasoning. This was my first time having caviar, and it was fresh, light, and mildly salty; a good highlight within the soup. At the bottom of the soup, there were tiny dices of potato. I'm still trying to figure out how they made those pieces cook through, but firm enough to not be mashed by my spoon. THIRD: lobster tortellini with sauce americaine Tortellinis were cooked al dente. Good amount of lobster THIRD: cornish game hen with roasted veggies and gnocchi. Gnocchi was light and fluffy like pillows with a light sear. I think my only negative comment is the bigger carrot was a little under (but maybe that's how it's supposed to be) FOURTH: pavlova- this was our favorite dessert. Light and fruity. Black Radish is a new fine dining restaurant in North Park located diagonally across University Ave from The Friendly Tavern. There is no sign in front of the building, only a hanging wire ornament in the shape of a black radish above the entrance. The inside space was modernized with a long communal table in the middle along with seating near the windows and back wall. The front of the soft opening menu consisted of choices in three categories... appetizer, salad/soup, and entree. A four course fixed price meal was available for $69. The back of the menu listed beers, wines, cocktails, and bar snacks. I picked the Roasted Pork Belly from the bar snacks and the Duck Breast from the entrees (Third) for my meal. The chunk of pork was marinated in a gooseberry jus and topped with homemade pickled radish and fermented fresno chili. Watch out for the kick from the chili as it packed a solid punch of spiciness to the dish. The duck breast was soaked in a port and red beet reduction and accompanied with sauteed summer vegetables and parsnip puree. Both items were each neatly presented on a large white plate. Note that all the offerings were essentially small bites so you are paying a premium for elegantly prepared food. I did receive a complimentary amuse bouche which was a spoon sized serving of local halibut. I also got a homemade marshmallow as a tiny dessert morsel on the house. Beautiful new restaurant with great potential in the San Diego food scene! A little bit on the pricier side for the food portion but they use great fresh ingredients and it's the pandemic where everything is more expensive. Started off with the Shrimp Puff that was ultra delicious mixed with fresh herbs, caviar and whipped creme fraiche. Then it was onto the Citrus Poached Prawns which were large and very fresh. The tomato jam was delicious but the prawns were sprinkled with a bit too much salt and the chips were somewhat stale and oily. The lobster toast was definitely lathered in lemon brown buttered but I felt it took a little away from the sweetness of the lobster. Black Radish truly excelled in their entrees though. The duck breast was tender and cooked to perfection. The Aged New York Strip was also very tender and I loved the red wine and bone marrow reduction sauce. My wife felt it was a tad bit overcooked but I thought it was cooked just right. Our favorite of the night was the Lobster Tortellini though. The lobster was not overcooked and tasted fabulously sweet. Each bite was heaven in the mouth. Absolutely loved this dish! Ended the night with the pink pineapple purée pavlova dessert which was decent as I thought the pavlova was tad bit too gooey in the middle and I thought it could have been garnished with a little bit more fruit. With a little fine tuning I truly believe Black Radish can be a great restaurant that I could find myself going back to on a regular basis! read more

Only been once, so judge accordingly. Cute little place with an understated vibe. Summary: good food, high price, and you'll need a slice of pizza afterwards. The menu is small and seasonal which is nice. Did their prix fixe option which includes an amuse-bouche and four courses (that comes out to around the price of four courses anyways). Now for where I have an issue. The food is good, don't get me wrong. It's flavorful, balanced, seasonal and creative; but for the portion size and the cost, they really could use two more courses included in the prix fixe because I think they are sending people home hungry. Looking at it from the perspective of ordering a la carte, I would have been incredibly disappointed if I had spent $22 on a scallop starter just to have a single scallop brought to me in some passion fruit sauce. While good, the flavor and detail in the dish don't match the price. Same goes for $18 for a completely average (even during tomato season) half of an heirloom tomato cut in pieces with some salt, pecorino and two pieces of lettuce. Four stars still because they can definitely make good food. But for the prices they have the menu set at, it either needs to be one level more refined or the portions need to be bigger. read more

The food was great. But the service was abysmal. And when the bill is $265, the service has better come with it to provide an experience that justifies it. We sat down at the bar & took 10 mins to finally get the attention of the bartender to put our drink order in. We wasted no time to also place our food order in as we already had enough time to look over the menu. Then, no words, no check in to see how we were doing. It took us to flag the bartender down to get a second round of drinks in. The bar has 6 seats total. At first, we gave a benefit of doubt that maybe a lot of orders were coming in. But then, he was taking care of the other clients (who were white), engaging with them the entire time. With us, barely a couple of sentences the entire 2 hours we were there and only when we were getting our drinks in. Not sure if it was because we were Asian & Mexican. When your clients sat directly in front of you, there is really no excuse for the neglect. It is unfortunate for such service. I wish there were more restaurants like Black Radish in San Diego. The food is elegant yet approachable and each dish is meticulously prepared and cooked to perfection. I came here with a friend who had been raving about this spot for months. We opted for the tasting menu, which honestly was a pretty reasonable price given the state of dining these days. It also comes with an optional wine pairing that I unfortunately didn't see before our food started coming out. Rookie mistake and one I will not make again. Drinks: They have an extremely interesting wine list with some rare finds you wouldn't normally find on restaurant menus. My favorite was this bottle from Corsica, France called La Robe d'Ange. It was absolutely delicious and a must try (and now offered by the glass)!! But if wine isn't your vibe they also have a full bar.. and I must say the Gooseberry Margarita was one of the best drinks I've had all year. And that's saying something. Experience: Like I said we opted for the tasting menu which was 89 for four courses. You can add on oysters or any other small bites for the price on the menu. Each course was perfectly timed and we did not feel rushed at all. The whole dinner was about 2.5 hours. Menu: AMUSE BOUCHE: swordfish tartare on a crispy cracker. Delicious and citrusy. A perfect way to start the meal FIRST COURSE: I got butter poached lobster with black truffle, caviar and sautéed radish bc I'm bougie and my friend got the Shellfish stew with clams, mussels, shrimp with a soubise shallot broth and homemade sourdough. Both were excellent but I think the shellfish stew had more complex flavor and I would order that when I come back SOUP/SALAD: I was in a salad mood so I opted for the chicory salad with pickled red onion and a caraway seed dressing. It was quite good but the dressing was drenched on the salad which took away from it a bit. My friend got the lobster bisque with crispy leek and big chunks of lobster. It was rich and decadent and what dreams are made of IMO **You also get a bread course here and you can ask for extra bread for a small cost. Homemade sourdough. Shall I say more..** ENTREE: We both got the duck breast entree and wow it was perfect. The crispy skin, the succulent duck breast meat, the perfect pomme purée. No notes. Five stars. I was driving by and saw this cool sign and thought that's a cool looking place so I remembered it and googled it and it was a restaurant so I made reservations. WOW am I so glad I made those reservations!!! It might now be our new little hidden gem! When you walk in it's decorated ever so slightly for the holiday season, it is just the perfect amount and perfectly done. It gives a warm, sexy, happy look to the place. We sat at the bar and completely enjoyed Jessica the bartender, She is really sweet and helpful. Everything on the menu looks amazing!!! We ended up doing the pre fixe menu and so glad we did so we could choose so many different things to try! The meatballs are amazing! The asparagus soup is beyond yummy, I could eat just that in a big ol bowl with their amazing bread and butter. Oh I have to tell you about the butter... the butter comes from Normandy and OMG it's delicious! We just got back from France and their is no better place to get butter. I'm not sure why but you will have to Google that for yourself. Back to the food... The beet salad is delicious, with some hidden gem of amazing in the middle. The crudo was very nice and refreshing I loved it. 10/10 Phenomenal. One bit of advice- my girlfriend and I typically will get a bunch of little things- to sample as much as the menu as possible and only get one meal to also share. The portions here are "single serving" aka. Pretty small and seems silly to share. With that said, you can easily get an appetizer, a salad and a meal to yourself and not be STUFFED or wasteful. Everything we had was perfect. We started with the french fries and caviar, and the King Crab with truffle butter. I wish there was a bit more caviar with the fries but I feel like could probably easily said about caviar in general lol. We got the cucumber salad and liked it so much ordered another round. I have to give props to my Yelp friend Charles C., who yelped this place before I did and intrigued me to the point that I bookmarked it for a special occasion. The occasion was in celebration in my daughter's 18th birthday and this place was the perfect restaurant for this important milestone. The place is cute and the decor doesn't lend itself to what a fine dining establishment should look like. I could easily imagine this to be a cafe, with my laptop, coffee, and sandwich on the table. The vibe was a combo of rustic with the brick walls but had a touch of class with the intricate crown molding, bright blue velvet booth chairs, and grey blue board and batten walls. The bathroom is actually hidden in these walls, I had to ask because it wasn't apparent. As other diners have stated, you can order the pre fixe menu which comes with a starter, main, and dessert for 79 dollars. Or you can order a la carte. Amuse- Bouche: To be honest, the waitress rattled off the ingredients so quickly, I wasn't able to properly remember what I was eating. I do know that it was a delicious starter bite with an herbed creamy spread on a multiseed cracker. App: Fries and Caviar. Go ahead and say it because we said it too. Fries and caviar?!! That does not sound appetizing at all. Who wants fishy fries? But at the strong recommendation of our waitress, we gave it a shot. Yes, I am a convert! Not fishy at all. The fries are perfect for two people and it wasn't too much fries (as most fry dishes can be overwhelming) where you are full by the next course. Perfectly salty, crisp on the outside, with no oil to be seen. It was paired with an herbed creme fraiche, which you smear on the fries and top with delicate caviar. First course: Butter poached king crab leg. Beautifully plated with bits of purple flowers artfully placed throughout, presentation was magazine worthy! The leg was cracked open but the meat remained encased within the crab leg shell. The crab was easy to take out and dip into the delicious, creamy saffron aioli sauce. Delicatable, savory. Second course: Tomato salad. This was a deconstructed salad composed of various types of tomatoes. Some acidic, some sweet, and of course a fried green tomato. It was dressed in housemade vinegrette that complemented the various tomato flavors. Good thing I don't mind tomatoes! Third course: I was torn between the pheasant and the halibut. I opted for the pheasant since I've never had tried this type of bird before. There was no gamey undertone and the meat was juicy and flavorful. The polenta was so smooth it fooled me into thinking it was pureed mashed potatoes! There was also baby cauliflower, which was seasoned well and had a nice bite to them. Dessert: Peach sorbet and red wine soaked peach paired with a thick sweet cream and a loose nut crumble crust. Both delicious! The sorbet was rich with peach flavor was and was a very light and refreshing way to end a meal. The wine soaked peach didn't have a strong wine taste, it was subtle, which I appreciated. I did have to hold myself back from eating the entire nut crumble crust because it was so yummy! Our dinner was finished off with bite sized macarons which was a pleasant surprise after an amazing culinary experience. Service was spectacular from the busboys and the waitress. I luv that they have an small seating area with a 'lounge' area (where we sat) with very comfortable lounge chairs and other seating options. We got there early so the noise level was very low but, after more people came then it got too loud and we had to speak loudly to be heard. The other item of note is that the potion size of all of the food is small, while the quality was high, so was the price. This place falls within other locals that are a 'try-only-once.' A delightful hidden gem of North Park. We opted for the tasting menu, with the fries to start. The fries were perfectly crisp, and the caviar was an excellent complement. The amuse-bouche of swordfish and white strawberry was a perfect starting point. I opted for the wine pairing with the 4-course meal. Every wine went perfectly with the course, would highly recommend you opt for it. The Dungeness crab with green mango was very bright with nice acidity, and a pleasantly large portion of crab. The pork belly was tender and fruity, also a delight. For the second course the sweet onion soup packed a lot of flavor into a small amount, with a very cheesy gruyere crouton. For the third course the ribeye was well worth the supplement, with a huge portion, perfect medium-rare with a nice char and flavorful sauce. The potato pave was another highlight. The pork tenderloin with a curry jus was an interesting combination that worked very well together. For dessert, the French meringue with orange was good, but the basil ice cream that accompanied the chocolate sponge cake was some of the best I've had hands-down. Top notch for San Diego, more of a NY SF vibe. Loved the small setting and perfect craft cocktails. Suggestion go for the apps on the menu. All were amazing. We ordered the option to pick 4 items and dessert was complimentary. Pork belly and tuna were our fav apps! Entrees we're great, but make sure your steak comes out the temperature you like.
