I haven't been here in years, but I met my friends for lunch here, the food was amazing. I had coconut shrimp tacos, they were so good, they were sweet, crispy, and absolutely delicious and it came with a little side salad, which was just enough. Everyone with me enjoyed their meals as well. We shared a piece of hummingbird cake, it wasn't very good to be honest with you. I would not recommend it. It was moist, but didn't taste like a hummingbird cake. You order at the counter, and they bring your food to your table. Highly recommend and I definitely will go back, the menu is amazing so many delicious choices. It was very loud because it was very busy on a Friday at lunch. I had to park in the very back of the parking lot because it was so busy. If you wanted refills, you could get up and get them yourselves. read more

Black Walnut is slowly becoming a place where you're paying for the ambiance and little else. We've been coming here for years, but each visit gives us one less reason to come back. The food used to justify the price. Now it feels like the menu got a raise while the kitchen took a pay cut. Our order was entered correctly, yet a completely different dish showed up at the table. Thankfully, the manager was professional and fixed the mistake immediately easily the most impressive part of the meal. The coffee deserves special recognition for achieving the impossible: tasting like hot water that once made eye contact with a coffee bean. As for the service, our server never introduced herself, never acknowledged the mix up, and seemed determined to complete her checklist without interacting with the customers. A simple smile or "I think this might be the wrong order" would've gone a long way. Instead, we got the hospitality equivalent of an automated email. read more

We haven't been here in a few years. The place has been renovated with better lighting, very bright inside now. We came in at 2pm on a Sunday and it was packed. We waited quite some time for our food but it was worth the wait. The food was good and staff provided excellent service. Everyone was friendly and helpful. We also had an order of tenders to go with Nashville Hot sauce and they accommodated our request with the sauce. I'm adding a star because staff were nice. But the bathrooms needed servicing and there were no toilet paper seat covers in one of the stalls. I ordered a cauliflower steak. It was good but I didn't like the nuts with it. The mashed sweet potatoes under the cauliflower were delicious. I had ordered a slice of chocolate cake to go. After my meal, I had to go ask for it. My first ever visit to a Black Walnut Cafe was here a couple of weeks ago for lunch. It was busy. At the counter I ordered their "award winning" pot roast entree for $19. After getting my fountain drink, the meal arrived about 10 minutes later. The bowl had chuck roast on garlic mashed potatoes with mushroom gravy and a slice of artisan bread. The meat was as tender as meat can get....melt in your mouth level. With the delicious mashed potatoes and gravy, I thought it was perfect! As good tasting and tender as I have ever had (5). I returned a couple of days ago to try the Mediterranean chicken entree for $15.50. When it arrived in a bowl it had grilled chicken breast meat with artichokes and olives with alfredo sauce and garlic mashed potatoes. It also had spinach, crispy garlic and sun dried tomatoes. This meal was very good either way the smoothness of the alfredo sauce and garlic mashed potatoes contrasting the olives and sun dried tomatoes (4). Seating is inside and outside covered patio. I honestly can't believe I haven't reviewed Black Walnut yet, considering I used to come here pretty often when I worked nearby. I recently came back for brunch with a friend and noticed they've done some remodeling. One change I really liked is that you can now order straight from the table. The old setup with long lines and then having to come back to pick up your food was doing way too much for a sit-down spot, so this upgrade was much needed. As far as the food goes, my experiences over the years have been decent but a little hit or miss. I tried the Nawlins pasta years ago and that was a pass for me. Since then, I've had quite a few breakfast dishes plus some salmon and chicken entrées. Overall, the food is good and enjoyable, just nothing that's blown me away or become a must-order. On this most recent visit, I ordered a mimosa flight--which I definitely felt a little--and the pastrami hash. I don't do over-easy eggs, so I ordered them over hard, and the dish was solid. My friend ordered a mimosa and the BBQ shrimp; she didn't really comment either way on it. We wrapped things up by sharing two desserts: the caramel apple cheesecake and the lava cake. Both were good, about a 3.5/5. Overall, Black Walnut is a dependable brunch spot with a chill vibe and a much better ordering setup than before. The food may not be mind-blowing, but it's consistent, enjoyable, and worth coming back to--which earns it a solid 4 stars from me. read more

We sat on the patio, which was perfect with the nice weather, and the staff was friendly and helpful since you order at the counter. 8/8/2025: Overall, I was satisfied with our dinner. I want to say that first, as my reviews are very detailed and it may initially communicate a bad experience. It wasn't. It just wasn't what I anticipated for the atmosphere. We had a group of 6 dining before a community theater play starring one of our friends, so we wanted something fast to make our theater time. I checked the website prior to arriving and noted a photo showing white linen tablecloths. This suggested a higher dining experience. This restaurant is a seat yourself, walk up order process, pay at the counter, get your own drink, and then they bring the food to you based on the location disk you take to your table after ordering. I will give compliments to the servers. They brought salt & pepper upon request, fixed one of my friend's salads as it was skimpy on the chicken, brought water to the table, and brought extra dressing upon request. We had 3 people assisting. When I was at the counter to pay (before the assistance at the table), I chose to not tip. I feel like if I'm doing the waitstaff work, what am I tipping for and to whom. After the waitstaff assistance at our table, I felt bad for not tipping. No cash on hand, so now I look like a cheap dining attendant. This is something to note in hopes of helping you before dining. Waitstaff deserves a tip. The food arrived fairly quickly at our table. I ordered the cauliflower bites to share with everyone and a chicken cobb salad. The cauliflower was absolutely the hit of the table. They were tempura fried, sesame seed sprinkled, sauced to perfection, large bites of deliciousness. The flavor was terrific! My salad was mixed greens with cubed chicken, egg, bacon, pickled onions (personally not an onion fan - forgot to remove them, but if you like onions, they looked good), tomatoes, and parmesan cheese. It was very good, but next time I will remember to request romaine lettuce. Spring mix always gets wilted after applying the dressing. It's my personal preference to have a crunch. Everyone at the table seemed pleased with their orders. The menu is a good size with several items I wanted to try. My meal was $33.84 in total. Still feel bad about not tipping. The staff were all friendly, the seating was great! They have tables with very comfortable chairs, bar seating, booth options, and also an outdoor patio. I would have given 5 stars if the food order process was different. I prefer the waitstaff to take my order when I am dining in a true restaurant. Walk up service is for fast food and BBQ places in my opinion. Their staff would have received a better tip if the layout was different or if we at least knew someone would be tending to our table. I know for sure, one other person in my group thought the same as me, so she did not tip either. We eat out a lot together and we are both 20% on a basic experience, but more like 22-25% on a great experience. If they don't change their setup, I would at least suggest for the order taker to give a rundown, especially for new people. A "how it works", if you will. A manager even came to our table to check on us. That's usually what a higher dining experience place does. I think they have the resources to make this place elevated. Our dining area was super cold. It was a very hot day, so I'd rather it be cold than warm. Even my always hot friend thought it was cold. Not complaining. Just suggesting to bring a sweater. I had a sweater, so I was fine. The parking lot is large with lots of spaces. Parking is free. read more

I ordered Black Walnut for dinner to go. My sister and I got the Mediterranean chicken and my brother in law ordered the chicken crossiant club with mashed potatoes. My sister enjoyed all the flavors of the dish and liked the ratio of chicken to potatoes. I felt like the dish itself was very overwhelming with all the flavors involved. The garlic mashed potatoes didn't have a distinct garlic flavor to them. The chicken was cooked very well and tasted great, but I didn't feel like the lemon Alfredo sauce paired well with the dish as a whole. My brother in law said he wished the sandwich was layered better and it didn't hold well together. It needed a bit more sauce. They have definitely expanded their menu from when I've been here a few years ago. They have a lot of other great dishes on the menu. I'd like to try some of the other items in person next time so it's fresh! read more

I come to this place for brunch after the gym. Almost every day, and I must say it's one of my favorite places to get brunch in Houston. The service is always top-notch. I never have just one person looking after me. It's always two or three people. checking in to make sure everything is to perfection. There's always someone walking around to make sure everything is going good. And the food is also amazing. I've tried so many things from this menu and so far everything is recomendable. It's been a while since I've been here, but we needed a solid enough brunch spot after moving a TV for a friend and thought we might find some hearty fare here. The menu has enough for everyone, nothing really stood out as not belonging or being too adventurous and the staples you expect are available to choose from. You walk up to order from the counter and then find your table from there, I bet that can get dicey if it gets too busy, but it worked out for us. Wait staff Service is left mainly to delivery of food and bussing of tables. There's an anachronistic feel to the interior that might have felt more modern when this was built in the 00's, but it feels dated now. Wood panel walls, TV's, few windows, and sectioned off dining rooms make it feel a little too cramped for my open concept millennial disposition. The carpeted dining areas was recently brought to my attention by an autistic friend of mine as being a huge ick, and I agree. It smelled like old carpet, and that's not the best eating environment. It's due for an upgrade. The food itself hits the mark, satisfied all the thing I expected it to. Everything was cooked to order and portions were fair for the price. I would've liked to have a crispy waffle; I mean I can get one crispier at most any hotel with a waffle iron. Tenders were over cooked, but still edible. I have been to the Black Walnut cafe on numerous occasions to work and eat. It's a great place to eat, and the perfect atmosphere for some laptop work. Plenty of booth seatings and comfortable chairs. All the employees were friendly and respectful. Today, I enjoyed an American burger medium rare it was cooked the way I wanted it. I mean....meh..... This wrap had potential but it really missed the mark. The chicken wasn't seasoned but the wrap had bold flavors such a onion, mint and cilantro. I would suggest using one or the other but not both in this sandwich because it is too much. The peanut sauce was the biggest miss here. I am not sure how the concogted this sauce but it is not the traditional peanut sauce you would get with an avocado eggroll. The sweet potato fries was the only winner here. It's really hit or miss at this place. Also, the bartender got my food order wrong. I watched my wrong order sit under a heat lamp until someone ordered it and they served it to this woman. Came here for a Saturday brunch with my MIL, and of course it's always busy on the weekend, but I saw two seats open at the bar and didn't realize that it was full service, so out of the line I went and over to the bar. I must say, i was happy to learn it was full service, bc although I get the concept of this place and how you order, and open seating, sometimes dealing with all the hooplah can be overwhelming! Anywho, we sat at the bar and ordered the delicious mimosas but did with pineapple, which was delicious! The sweetness of the pineapple with the orange liqueur made for an amazing taste of mimosas. I ordered a simple breakfast and was really craving some grits, and I've never had their grits in all my years coming here, and I must say, I will be ordering them again! The bacon was perfectly crisp and the eggs softly scrambled as ordered and the toast, the toast was just really good, perfect toasted with the crunch but still had a great soft texture! They nailed the breakfast and mimosas for me! The only reason for 4 stars is that it seemed to get so busy that we didn't seem to get noticed for quite some time sitting at the bar.
