Cozy atmosphere with an urban, classy, romantic vibe. The background music was good with a great sound system, but a little loud for me. Menu was varied and interesting with some specialties, sandwiches, and salmon. Prices were fair for these times. I had the strawberry goat cheese salad and the baked dinner rolls with sweet butter. Enjoyed it all. My husband had the burger with fries. He said both were very good. I'd like to try the bacon crusted salmon or the gnocchi next time. We did not have dessert. Service was friendly, helpful, and efficient. This is a tiny gem in Uptown. They've been open about a year. I hope people will discover and enjoy it like we did. I mean--you would think of all the things that are pet peeves when it comes to food, overcooking my steak would be one of the biggest. But I've learned that if I order my steaks rare or even blue rare at a place not known for their steaks, it comes out to the desired medium rare I wanted all along. Such was the case tonight. I asked for rare but it came out closer to medium rare--maybe even dipping into medium. No big whoop. The baseball steak was still juicy and delicious. The fries were still great shoestring. And I can live with a chimichurri sauce instead of the preferable hollandaise or bearnaise these usually come with. I just wish I could actually ask for a medium rare and get medium at a food joint other than where it costs me $60 or $70 a cut. The service was good. She was pleasant and quick on her feet. The ambience was good. It was a quaint space and had a lot of charm. I can't say it was too full but I attribute that more to the day being full of sporting events like the World Cup and some silly NBA thing than an actually critique of the restaurant. Subsequently, I found this a good place for dinner but not superb and I found myself wondering when the next like fate might bring me here. read more

I've been here multiple times and I am never disappointed. The food is so innovative, the drink selections are great, and they add a nice variety to Uptown's cuisines. The interior feels so upscale and chic. And the waitresses are always attentive. I hope they stay for a long time. read more

First off. This place is great. We haven't been for about a year so menu items changed a bit. But nonetheless the food was fantastic. We tried to book via the website which was through open table but it noted that the restaurant was closed, which was far from it. Try calling to book a reservation because theyre currently having issues with opentable. Now that's outta the way we were served by Abbey and she took care of us dearly. We first ordered the Hand Cut beef tartare, which was fresh and had good flavor, great for sharing. The mains I ordered their 16oz ribeye w/ a side of Grilled Corn, it had chimichurri sauce on the side, but to be honest it wasn't necessary as the spices they did on the meat was already flavorful, but it did give a different flavor profile, since the chimichurri was a bit spicy. My wife ordered the Bacon Crust Salmon. We also ordered some House Baked roll with Honey Butter and sea salt. The butter was really good. We went here on a Wednesday night so it was as busy. Probably a good time to go. But again their restaurant is open, just call to make a reservation. Positive experience overall, and Abbey was attentive. Compliments to the chef. read more

Dinner was fantastic here. Those deviled eggs really caught me off guard. It was a full on show eating them! They were presented in a glass dome with smoke inside. The bacon was so juicy and the crispy edges were divine. There was no one in the restaurant which really confused me because the food and service were so great. Delicious French inspired food with top choice wine and alcohol all topped off with fantastic service. This new restaurant (just seven weeks old) is on the rise and the one to watch out for! Food: I got the lamb shank and my husband got the duck leg confit. The lamb shank was fall off the bone, melt in your mouth delicious. The duck confit was seasoned perfectly, had a magnificent crispy skin, all without an oily or dry aftertaste. Also paired well with the risotto. Excited to come back for crab cakes, the beet salad, the salmon, and the steak. Alcohol: fantastic wine choices. Husband ordered a chardonnay that was balanced and not too buttery. They even gave an '18 Cab I'd love to try next time. I opted for the beers. Not being a big beer fan, I got the two sour beers and loved them. They have the ipas, stouts, and cool craft beers too. Seating was plentiful. Gorgeous decorations. Fanatic service. Right next to Rokka and the Vandalist, Blackbird is a fierce competitor and is here to stay! I'd love to see a happy hour or a few cocktail choices. But overall, a delightful addition to uptown Whittier, a delicious French restaurant, and a perfect new date night staple. read more

This is a lovely little place in downtown Whittier. The waitress was attentive and helpful, but also gave me the space to enjoy dinner at my own pace. The food was delicious. The stuffed eggs came with a serving of BBQ pork shoulder that was amazing. The filet mignon was good and the smashed Yukon gold potatoes were melt in your mouth delicious. They do serve seasonal and small batch items, so sometimes they don't have everything available on the menu, but are happy to help you find something different. I've been here about 5 times in the last few months and have been impressed with their food and service every time. Salads, soups and entrees have been absolutely delicious! I love that I can find dishes that are unique from other restaurants in Whittier, but can also find classic dishes that have been taken to another level with the Chef's use of seasonal fruits and vegetables. I gave it 4 stars because he hasn't had any dessert offerings on at least two occasions that I've visited and I love ending my dinner with dessert. read more

We traveled to Whittier originally to dine at another restaurant, which had been bought out for the night. Based on reviews we chose to reroute to Blackbird! Immediately upon walking in the mood felt a bit off. We sat and the lone server came over eventually and gave us glasses and water. Time between check ins was quite lengthy. We attempted to order drinks and were told they were out of 6/8 of their beer options. We selected a few cans from the servers descriptions and placed an order for some appetizers. We had all finished our drinks by the time the appetizers arrived and oh no they were also out of the Brussels sprouts so we had to swap to fries. I then asked for a second can of the beer I ordered. The server came back with two different beer cans, and explained they had, you guessed it, run out of the beer I ordered. It appeared these we're the last two cans in the joint. We placed our entree orders. Coq a Vin and lamb shank 86'd. Shocking. We proceeded to wait around 40 minutes before food arrived at our table. The restaurant was half empty. What took so long?! I wish I could stop here and tell you the good food redeemed our experience. Dear reader that was simply not the case. Great : Parker house rolls, the kale and onion sautéed beneath my steak, the garlic aoli the server forgot that we had to ask for. Good : filet mignon 6 oz , medium rare Ok : fries. They were boring and came in huge piles with everything which made the substitute appetizer fries redundant. Wings, though technically they were all full sized drumsticks in place of your traditional flats and drummies. Burger, bacon and caramelized onions were doing all the heavy lifting. Bun excessively sesame seeded. Meh: clam chowder, super boring. Shrimp pasta, lacked flavor Bad : Korean fried chicken sandwich. My guest only managed two bites. The server eventually brought us our bill, which they then had to correct because it still had the missing brussel sprouts on our tab. They comped us one glass of wine, and our dinner was $200, PLUS a 3% surcharge for using a credit card. Suffice to say we don't plan to return. read more

Tried this new spot on a sunday evening and I was not disappointed. I had the salmon and my friend had the steak. We also ordered the mac and cheese from the small bites. Unfortunately, we ate the mac so quickly I didn't capture a good picture. But it was so good we couldn't wait for the picture. It was creamy, and had a nice little crunch with the bread crumbs. The peas & bacon were also a nice addition. The steak was cooked to perfection and the steak fries were great. My salmon was one of the best! It was perfectly crispy on the outside and cooked to perfection, it was moist and the sauce and veggies complimented so we'll. Our server, Andrew was very attentive and gave us some great menu suggestions. Can't wait to try other menu items. read more

My husband and I were excited to try this new restaurant in Whittier. We ordered the hanging bacon, duck, and filet mignon. The hanging bacon sounded promising--we were expecting something thick-cut and crispy, like a butcher-style bacon. Unfortunately, it just tasted like regular bacon and didn't feel special. It was served with a baguette, but we thought a thicker-sliced sourdough would have been a better pairing than the soft white bread. The filet mignon was just okay. It came with kale and fries--the kale was overly salty, and the fries were a bit too hard for our taste. The duck dish was also quite salty, and it came with risotto that wasn't very creamy. The rice was overcooked when we were expecting a slightly al dente texture. We also wished they had a wider drink menu--there weren't many options to choose from. That said, we understand the restaurant is newly opened, and we hope our feedback helps them improve. One highlight of the evening was our server--he was genuinely friendly and made us feel comfortable throughout our dinner. read more

We entered in and the server was really nice and we got sat immediately. The place is really cute and is decorated nicely. However, there was two main issues, one being the lack of AC and the other, just being the food. Let me tell you we were straight sweating. I swear, even the water was room temperature within a couple of minutes. The bottle was sweating too! Def don't go here if you struggle with hot temperatures. Especially since the food we were eating was also hot. The Caesar salad wasn't good. The dressing tasted like a bottled dressing you could get from the store. And the croutons were fried which was so odd. It just tasted like oil. I described it as tasting like a donut. Maybe the oil was old or something. Not a good start. Then the food came. We were CRYING LAUGHING at the ungodly amount of fries that came with the sandwich. And once again they just tasted oily to me, or like the oil used was old. The sandwich according to him was just "aight". My pasta was SO flavorless I'd rather go to Olive Garden. It was literally just a bowl of cream with no seasoning. And the shrimps were so hard and dry. They left the tails on too, which had no point since there wasn't even any juice in them. Rock hard and tasteless. I feel bad because the server was really sweet but it was sooooo hot we had to get out of there! The food wasn't good either, especially considering the bill clocked in at $100 . Finally tried Blackbird last week. Reminds me of local neighborhood restaurants in Europe. Love that we have that in Whittier. Casual vibe, amazing food at a great value. Wanted to eat the deviled egg appetizer all myself. Had a ribeye...nicely marbled, flavorful and cooked perfectly (and at a surprisingly nice price.) And the Brussels were incredible. Short version: GO. Longer version: keep reading. We opened with the deviled eggs served under glass and the hanging bacon, which comes on the cutest little stand with grilled toast and jam. Delicious way to start. The clam chowder was Loaded with clams and Potatoes no skimping. The highlight was the ribeye. Excellent quality and it was cooked absolutely perfectly -- this is quality meat that doesn't need to hide behind a sauce. The French dip - also ribeye, was STACKED on an incredible roll with a mountain of fries. Our friend ordered the crabcake she said super fresh, briny, like the actual ocean. Sides were stellar too! The smashed roasted Brussels sprouts and the Yukon gold mashed potatoes were genuinely some of the best things I've had. We had a French Bordeaux that went beautifully with everything. The chefs came out to chat with us, which was a nice touch. The owner/chef did serious time at Nick and Stef's and Patina here in LA and it absolutely shows. This is LEGIT. First off, the Blackbird Abbey is a nice addition to Uptown's eatery scene. The menu has some nice entrees from Steak to salmon as well as some pasta dishes. I had the salmon dish and it was excellent. My friend had the Steak Frittes and she gave a a big thumbs up which for her is saying a lot. If you go try the hanging bacon as an appetizer. It was great! They have a nice selection of beers and wines on the menu as well. Blackbird Abbey is a nice alternative to the standard burgers and taco places that frequent the Uptown area. I want to start off by saying that this place is a little high priced so don't be surprised. We ordered the crabcake which was $28 appetizer, I will say it was one of the best crabcakes I have had. We ordered the salmon and the blackbird burger. I did order the blackbird burger with no onions and no cheese as I wanted to get the full flavor of the fig house jam. It was excellent. My only comment would be that may be a little less salt on the fries. They do not have beer on tap. It is canned and bottled, and no mixed drinks. The service is excellent, our waiter. Andrew was very attentive and was very Knowledgeable of the items on the menu. He did let us know that the crab cake was only one as some people expected to receive several crabcakes for that price. Very nice atmosphere enjoy that they were playing moderate music and not loud. Also note that if you're going to use your credit card, they do charge a 3% additional fee. This was my first time at Blackbird Abbey, a fairly new steakhouse in Whittier and overall, it was a great experience. Walking in, the space felt a bit awkward at first. It's a small, single room with tables, and the layout doesn't offer much in terms of ambiance. I think having a window into the kitchen or something to show the chef in action would add more character and energy to the space. That said, the food was excellent. Most of the dishes had great flavor and upscale presentation. You can tell thought and care went into each plate. We also had wine with our meal, which paired nicely and added to the experience. Service was a strong point. Our waiter was extremely attentive and professional truly 5-star service. The only downside was the final dish: the steak. It tasted good, but the presentation felt underwhelming compared to the other dishes. It came out on a plain plate and didn't match the elevated feel of the rest of the meal. Still, Blackbird Abbey has a lot going for it. I'm looking forward to coming back and hope they stick around for years to come. Great addition to Whittier's dining scene. read more

This is a long overdue review as we've eaten there several times. Each and every time everything has been simply outstanding. My husband is a huge fan of their lamb dishes while I have enjoyed the duck confit, salmon and scallops. The beet salad is also wonderful. The service has been excellent. If I were going to nitpick, it would only be to say that all sparkling wine should be served in a flute. That said, for a smallish restaurant they have an unexpectedly fine wine list. Service was personal and knowledgeable. Our table had the brussel sprouts, Cesar salad, crab cake, soup of the day, and the schnitzel sandwich. Everything was delicious. The real big surprise was the schnitzel. Generously seasoned, moist center, crispy and crunchy simultaneously. The executive chef came out to greet his diners and said there would be a menu change for the Spring. Our first time at Blackbird Abbey. I gave it 5 stars because it deserves it but if we're doing 1 - 10 it's 9 out of 10. The food was outstanding. I ordered Mary's free ranged half chicken and it was delicious. The chicken was juicy and spicy and I must say the food all came out piping hot. My husband ordered the blackbird burger and said it was a solid 10. We ordered the smoky deviled eggs and they were worth the $16 price tag. They come out under a smoke-filled dome. It's dinner and a show. It smelled absolutely fabulous and tasted just as good as it looked. Our server, Andrew, could not have been more attentive, friendly, and professional. Excellent service. I have to take a point off for ambience - the space could use a little bit of warmth and style. We will definitely go back and we will recommend it to all of our friends and neighbors. read more

My wife & I had our 9 year old son in tow & Blackbird.s staff is very accomodating; most of their menu items can be kid-afied. I started with the smoked deviled eggs with pork belly, which have a nice smoky depth and a little kick to them. The crab cake is another hit, full of flavor and comes with a tangy tartar sauce. Then I went with the schnitzel sandwich. . The crispy schnitzel was perfectly cooked, and what really tied everything together were the pickles and Russian dressing.
