UPDATE: Dropping my review to one star because after making the initial review I was told to email to get this resolved? I did exactly that and no one has responded to me at all. And upon further look at their website, there is no mention of these fees. Another commenter mentioned how these hidden fees are not posted on the website, nor in the restaurant, and the servers do not tell you about it, making this practice illegal. I love this place! Always great service and very professional management team. This place is a sure shot. You will always have good food, and a great time here. This time I went with a large group. Appetizers we ordered were: brussel sprouts (LOVE), wings (sweet chilli, buffalo, plain); crab dip. All were very good. The entrees were Rock Fish, short ribs, and crab cakes. All the food was delicious. My mom doesn't like anything and she doesn't eat other people's food, but she loved all the food. Again good food, great customer service from waitstaff and management. So as far as ambience goes, it was a very cool vibe, and we really did enjoy our server. He was incredibly attentive and very very accommodating and knowledgeable of the menu. That being said, for three adults, one adult, being only 15 and the fourth member of the party being a 10-year-old who got the pepperoni flatbread and french fries. For a bill that is in the hunis absolutely atrocious. Yes, we did have oysters, but the French onion, soup and cheesy grits. My mom ordered, we're bland is bland could be. I highly recommend the oysters but at $8 a piece we only got 1 each. My husband always orders the brussel sprouts as an appetizer wherever we go and they were tasty. I ordered the crab dip also good but the crackers tasted stale. I got a soda and my husband ordered a pumpkin ale beer that tasted like pumpkin pie. He ordered the Salmon special and the salmon was cooked perfectly seared with a crust. I got a flatbread pizza also good but by that time was getting full. Like I said a lot of food but we were able to take it back to the VRBO for later. For dessert we got the bread pudding and that was a disappointment. My friends and I were looking for somewhere to start off our 'Ladies Night Out' and Blackwall Hitch came highly recommended. So so glad that we opted to dine here, because the everything from start to finish was JUST what we needed. There was a live band when we entered the restaurant, which imm pretty sure is a key feature on Friday nights. You have a variety of options to choose from. Service was good. We were a party of 6 and our waitress accommodated us well. We enjoyed the Bellini's and Mimosa's. We ordered 2 bottles and was provided carafes of (peach, pineapple, mango, orange juice & cranberry juice) to be mixed with our champagne. We enjoyed the music. I've been a patron at Blackwall Hitch in Alexandria since 2019. My wife and I first visited right before COVID and immediately loved the service and hospitality. We've returned regularly for Sunday brunch and even celebrated my wife's birthday here last November with over 20 guests. That's why I was so disappointed by our experience on Saturday, April 4th (around 11 AM-noon). As a former restaurant and bar manager for 10 years, I understand how busy brunch service can be. However, what I witnessed was unacceptable. We were told by the hostess that only bar seating (indoor or outdoor) was available unless we had a reservation. A few minutes later, two Caucasian couples walked in with no reservation (which I verified with the gentleman personally) and were promptly offered table seating -- they were even told they would be texted when a table was ready. Shortly after, another African American couple arrived and was given the exact same "bar seating only" response we received. I personally asked that couple to confirm. I spoke with the manager on duty, but we ultimately left and ate next door. As longtime customers who have brought many people to this restaurant, I'm deeply concerned that seating decisions appeared to be based on race. In 2026, this kind of treatment is completely unacceptable and damaging to the restaurant's reputation. I truly hope management investigates and corrects this issue, so all guests are treated fairly regardless of race. read more

Went to Blackwall hitch and I will say right off the bat, the food was great. Loved the steak and potatoes, sautéed spinach was actually so good. The grab dip was also amazing, very hot but so good. I also got the blueberry lemonade, one of the best I've ever had. The vibe of the restaurant was cool, could be nice or laid back but unfortunately we made reservations on open table a week ahead of the date for outside seating and when we arrived we were told it was a 45 min wait for our own reservation so we elected to sit inside because it was right away but frustrating we made a reservation that wasn't honored. Also, when we finally sat down, the service was not great, it took an hour and a half to get our food and only saw our waiter 3 times in total. My BFF wanted to try this place because she had heard great things about their brunch. Based on these Yelp reviews, I had pause. Ambiance - Gorgeous! Right on the water in Alexandria. The inside was beautiful. There was live music so, it was challenging hearing and speaking, but that's to be expected. Food - Everything was delicious. I loved the peel and eat shrimp! The waffles were also good, and were constantly being made. They were hot and fresh! Service - This is where I had to drop a star. Our server couldn't remember what we ordered (more than once). Considering it was a buffet, that shouldn't have been difficult considering we just ordered drinks. Overall, I would recommend it. I had lunch today at BH to celebrate a friend's birthday. From the time we entered and were met at the door by the GM, Andy until the time we departed it was an extremely pleasurable dining experience!!! I would rate the entire experience a solid ten. Great atmosphere and great food! Here are some details, our server, Dennis answered all of our questions and recommended great dishes. To include the appetizers: Calamari and Flaming Crab Dip. Both were delicious!!!! Next, our entrees included the daily special which consisted of salmon, crab and shrimp blackened on mashed potatoes. That plate was cleaned.. .no need for the dishwasher! Also, had the beef short rib pasta dish which was good and plenteous had to take some leftovers home, to leave room for dessert!!! Again Dennis, didn't disappoint based on his recommendations we had the sorbet, key lime pie and red velvet cheesecake...drop your spoon/fork and shut your mouth good!!! After searching online for a restaurant near me. I decided to check out Blackwall Hitch. I sat at the bar for my visit. The bar was not crowded, I felt like I had to catch the bartender when they came in my area to order or ask for something. I ordered the blueberry basil smash for a drink. It was light and refreshing. Now there were plenty of appetizers to choose from but I decided to get the house salad. The salad was a decent size and it was prepared with a house vinaigrette. The vinaigrette was a little on the heavy side and over powered the salad. The salad was served with two warm rolls that were light and fluffy. The special for that night was half off of pasta dishes. In hindsight I wished I would have went with that option instead. I ordered the shrimp and scallop risotto. The bartender recommended that I sub the risotto for the grits which I did. My entree came out but it was not as good as I expected. The dish was warm, but in a way that it had been sitting a little longer than it should have. I would have liked it to be a little hotter. I am a big dessert person. Once I finished my meal, my plate sat in front of me for a while. A bartender finally came over and asked if I was finished. I wish I was asked or given a dessert menu but they seemed to be busy with restocking the bar. I finally just asked for my check. read more

We got not only our appetizer but our entrées before we got our drink which it took 20 minutes AFTER BEING SEATED to even get the drink menu. The seafood is actually pretty good, anything else is bad or barely edible. Manager came to the table never asked about the issue and when my partner tried to bring it up because we had to send food back they couldn't care less and just walked away. I came here last weekend for the first time. I want to preface this by saying we all enjoyed our meals. The food was good (food is 4 stars). However, the three star rating is for the cleanliness of where we were sitting. We were put at a booth along the window. Their window sill was covered in dead bugs. The window was also covered in dead bug splatters. At first I thought it was the outside of the window, but nope, it was the inside. It was clear the bugs and window had been like that for a while. I couldn't believe they'd let people sit near that. I'm a former server, and it's normal practice to routinely clean the windows and sills. Looking at that kind of dampened my experience, especially sitting right along it. For food, again, we liked our meals. Two in our group got the creole pasta and the braised short ribs, both delicious. I got the Chesapeake flat bread, and my boyfriend got the burger, we enjoyed each. We also got oysters to start and the crab dip. The oysters were fresh and tasty and you can never go wrong with crab dip! Overall, I enjoyed their food and would go back. Our server, Lauren, was incredible...the rest of our experience was unfortunately not great. We'd been looking forward to visiting Blackwall and finally got around to making a reservation. We arrived and were told we may not have a table, despite the reservation...meanwhile we watched a walk up group of tourists get seated immediately. Once we were seated, our server was warm and welcoming...but when the food arrived it fell far short of expectations. I ordered the black pepper pasta...chicken was bone dry and noodles had no flavor. Tasted over cooked and seemed like all they did was poor a spoon of olive oil and a shake of pepper...there was really no flavor. My partner ordered the crab stuffed rockfish and after about three bites of another bland dish we were ready to move on from this meal. We told our server we wouldn't be finishing our meals and expressed the disappointment, but didn't have any further interaction from the kitchen or management. While the atmosphere is lovely, food fell far short of expectations and I would recommend it with so many other spots in the area. read more
