In the 6 months I have moved to San Antonio. I have fallen in love with Tex Amex and eat it every day. Blanco cafe might be the best food I have ever had. Have been there 3 times now and every dish is amazing. Their is a sign that says "voted best enchiladas in San Antonio" well I'm here to tell you that is the truth. I have had none better. Parking is a bit rough and sometimes their is a wait but the experience is worth any hardship you endure. You will be glad you made the trip. read more

Blanco Cafe is the Tex Mex I've been missing since moving away from Texas. No frills, just delicious basic food. We hit them for dinner and timed it just right. There were maybe 3 tables seated when we walked in about 5:45pm but when we left at 6:30 almost every table was full. And they close at 7 as they are mostly a breakfast/lunch place. But the locals apparently know where to go for a quick dinner and I'm glad we joined them. I had the Carne Guisada and it was terrific. The beef chunks were so tender while the rich sauce they were in just added to the flavor. The rice was excellent while the refried beans had a creamy consistency I've missed. Blanco Cafe has been named the best enchiladas in San Antonio and my wife had to agree. Neither of us have had puffy tacos before but we will from now on, if we can find them back home. Last but definitely not least, are the flour tortillas. OMG I have sooo missed flour tortillas with my meal. It seems to be standard at most Mexican restaurants in Texas, why don't they do this at home? I'd forgotten about this. And these were so good, thicker and fluffier than those pale imitations I've been enduring for the past 35 years. They were Tex Mex pancakes of love. I had never been to this location before, I was there last Sunday and boy, I've been missing out! I had the Trio Enchilada (one chicken, one beef and one cheese enchilada with rice and beans and it also comes with side tortillas), everything was delicious! My partner had breakfast tacos (yay, breakfast served all day!) Barbacoa and egg w/bacon. The flour tortillas are probably the best i've tried in San Antonio. I wasn't really planning on coming here, but my Bf's mom wanted a quick bite so we came here and oooh boy the line was long and my bf's mom waited 30 mins before they got seated (It was all worth it thought lol) So I'm not really a fan of Mexican food, and if I were to go to a Mexican restaurant, it's always going to be the same place) only because they have my favorite shrimp & beef fajita plate. I am not a fan of Mexican food and I dislike enchilada. The moment I got here my bf's mom said that they have the best enchiladas in town (the restaurant even got the best enchilada in SA) and oooh girl, IT WAS DELICIOUS. I can tell the difference if this enchilada from the other once I've had. So their enchilada is very creamy, the cheese tasted sooo good and it just went with everything on that plate. The tortilla is also VERY VERY VERY good! It's so authentic, I love it. The only thing I probably disliked is the sweet tea because it wasn't as sweet, but some sugar aided it. My husband and I stopped in for the first time for lunch today. They are a very cute, hole in the wall cafe. The long bar still has the old spinning stools attached to the floor so made me think of the old days. They opened in 1972 and most of the people that work there have been there forever which is always nice. OMG This is a hidden gem!!! This place is very small, but the service is fast! And the waitress, we had was the sweeties! We were a party of 8, they sat us on a table for 8 (no elbow room). Cynthia saw we were a little tight. She asked for another table to be added. BAM! Larger table and eating room We didn't have to ask for anything, she knew what we needed. She did come over and ask if we need anything else (refills). Her happiness made us feel so welcome, we had to more food (to-go) If more restaurant had more of her, they would be making a killing! There's not much parking here so make sure you come early if you plan on having lunch on a weekend. There's no waiting area so you hang out around the inside or outside where you may or may not hear your name being called. The decor is simple and the food is a never ending menu of breakfast tacos, enchiladas and other Mexican fare. I had the chicken mole enchiladas and they were amazing. The service is average, but they give you huge drinks that will last you through the meal. You pay at check out so it can be an easy in and out. The tortillas are delicious. I like how the food is not overly greasy and the taste is just right -- no fears of being too salty or bland. I can easily see why this place is popular. The prices are average, $8-11 and definitely not on the expensive trendy style that is so popular now. I felt like I was enjoying home cooking when I ate. read more

Blanco Cafe has been long touted as a delicious Mexican food restaurant in San Antonio. I have to say that for me, it was an "okay" experience. On Saturday night, boyfriend and I rolled in around 7:15 p.m. They close at 8 p.m. but we were able to sit quickly. Our server took a few minutes taking our drink order (water for me, tea for boyfriend). He handed us the menus and immediately asked if we knew what we wanted. I didn't, since I had never been there. I ended up getting the 2 cheese enchilada and fajita plate. More about that in a minute. We wanted chips and salsa, as most Mexican restaurants serve. The server told us it would be $1.99, which is a lot. And to be honest, the chips were only okay. The salsa was actually rachero sauce. It was very unappetizing and completely not worth $1.99. My plate came out hot and pretty quickly, which I was happy about. I completely enjoyed the cheese enchiladas. The cheese was so perfect and had a great sauce. However, the fajita meat was extremely tough and way too hard to eat. Our check came and we paid at the register on our way out. Overall, I would say that I was relatively disappointed, considering how much hype there is around this place. I will try the one on Fredricksburg next time and see how they compare. read more

Their claim of having the best enchiladas in San Antonio is complete rubbish. They are just okay but certainly not the best. The service was very slow considering it wasn't extremely busy and it times we were ignored by our waitress and we had to ask another server for things. The beef enchiladas were pretty awful as the meat had an unusual flavor and smell and when we mentioned it to the waitress, no one bothered to try and make it right or give a small discount. As of 2 hours since we have eaten, my friend that had the beef enchiladas has been to the restroom several times and there is a concern about food poisoning. Definitely is a forgettable experience and I certainly wouldn't recommend this place. $45 for 3 plates of sub par food and shit service is definitely not worth it. You would be better off eating at Taco Cabana or Taco Bell. Save your time, your money and your health. It's a major trap. read more

First I have a public service announcement: They're constantly busy... for the sake of all things holy please have the decency to pay attention to your server when he/she comes to your table. Don't be a prick and make others wait or mess up a servers rotation just 'cause you're self entitled and think you're better than everyone else, you're not. Only your mom thinks you're a princess, no one else likes you. I see it all the time, a busy place, server comes up to your table greets everyone and is ready to take your order... and not one jack ass at the table has the decency to stop talking and even acknowledge the server. When I was a server and people did that I'd just walk away, that always got their attention. Sorry baby, now you're waiting for when I have time to come back. *rant over* I'm one of those people that is kinda on and off about this place. The stuff here that I like I really really like. The stuff that I don't like here, I do not even want to see it! Be gone! The service is usually pretty friendly. Aside from the stone face lady at the register, the servers usually have a smile on their face. It's an old place and you can tell but there have been some improvements over the years. If you can look past these things, the food here is wonderful. I am a enchilada enthusiast. My favorite Mexican dish is cheese enchiladas. I order them every where I go. I was warned by a friend who is also like me that she did not like this place but my boyfriend insisted to come here to at least try them. Service was a little under par I think we might have had a new waiter. The chips and salsa that were provided might have been the worst I've had in a while. Chips were hard possibly cause it was 7:30 pm. The salsa was similar to a ranchera sauce could also be described as a soup. Our enchiladas plates came out fairly quick but when it hit the table it was luke warm the cheese inside the tortilla has already solidified and I had to send back to be heated more. When I got it back the cheese was the way it should be when you cut in and take away the fork cheese strings should follow in my opinion. I used to come here for breakfast tacos every other Saturday with the family. The ladies were always polite and as Edgar already mentioned, they were pretty fast in getting to you - and not just to sit you down either. They stuck with you fairly well even through the morning rush. The tacos were always filling - only needed a couple of papas y huevos with a heaping spoonful of hot-ass green sauce and I was good to go! =P Weekends get filled with customers quick (especially Sundays when the 'church crowd' comes) so be prepared to wait in line if you want to dine in. Quite possibly the best puffy tacos I've ever had! The beef puffy was bomb and didn't give me a nasty taco seasoning burp afterwards and the chicken puffy was PERFECTION, lightly seasoned and tender! However, if you don't like greasy food then stray away from these or just blot to your heart's content. Jesse waited on us and ran the place like a BOSS! Blanco Cafe has been our go to place since the 70's when they opened. They have the best Tex-Mex food I've found in San Antonio and Austin. Believe me, I've been to dozens of places with friends and I always return to Blanco Cafe. I love their Mexican Dinner which includes three enchiladas, rice, refried beans, taco, chalupa and guacamole and of course two wonderful flour tortillas. I do however, recommend that you eat your chalupa, taco, & guacamole first then ask them to prepare your enchiladas, rice & beans. I love my food served extremely hot. You must request it, if you want the cheese to be melted throughly. Tell them to almost burn the cheese on top to get it adequately hot. After reading that this place, the original Blanco Cafe, was voted "the best enchiladas in San Antonio", I had no choice but to try it. Yes, the enchiladas are very good, but best in town? In my ever-so-humble option, they're not even in the same league as the Enchiladas Soluna at Soluna, but neither is the price, so if the ONLY thing you're after is great authentic enchiladas and don't care about ambiance or the availability of a margarita, cerveza or chips and salsa with your dinner, give Blanco Cafe a try. The service is good, the prices are ridiculously low, but the setting is more Mexican diner than Mexican restaurant. The area is a bit suspect, but probably safe enough, especially before the sun goes down. My guess is this is a place that appeals more to locals than visitors, and that's okay.
