I love Blaze!!!! This restaurant is in prime location for UCI students so it does have heavy foot traffic, but the wait is definitely worth it. Blaze is extremely reasonably priced and the pizza is delicious. If you are also health conscious the calories for the pizza and toppings is amazing. Oh Blaze, I'm sorry but I just have to say when it comes to the battle of the build your own pizza's Pieology has got you owned. I've dined on pizza's from both establishments a few times and a few months ago I'd say the two were in a neck to neck tie. Blaze has more variety in terms of ingredients and more space to sit while Pieology has better texture in terms of their crust and better consistency in their BBQ sauce (a must have on my pie). Anyway's here is why I vote for Pieology and where Blaze falls short. 1. The most important test for me. If you pick up a perfect thin crust pizza (granted you've selected a heaping pile of your favorite toppings) the pizza should give a strong effort to stand up semi straight for at least 2 seconds before slowly becoming overwhelmed by the shear mass of all your glorious meats and veggies, resulting in the need of your other hand to support the little friend on it's short journey from the box to your mouth. Pieology pizza's live up to this standard. These babies don't have the strength of a cardboard box but still, they TRY to hold up, and for that they win my support. Now for the analogy for Blaze's pizza slices. I picked up my first slice and BAM. Elephant trunk. (Sorry that's the best I could do) but really, the pizza was so so SOO soggy that it literally tasted like wet dough. Not my kind of pie. 2. When I ask for BBQ sauce on a pizza I kind of anticipate that swirly artsy design of some nice thick sauce swiveling back and forth on the top of your freshly baked pie. At Blaze you get a pizza sitting in brown soup. This KILLS the texture of your pizza and that's exactly what happened on my last visit. At Pieology their sauce makes a perfect drizzle and doesn't compromise the texture of the crust, at Blaze they use too much of an already wet sauce and it just ruins the whole thing. 3. The fact that you can order online for Blaze should be a major plus but due to the fact that either the system is new and/or the people here don't know how to work it yet, it seems more like a hassle than something that is supposed to make your life less stressful. Needless to say if I'm ever in a custom pizza kind of mood I don't think I'll be picking Blaze anymore. Sad too because I liked finishing off my pizza dinner with a nice cup of boba from CHA. :( :( read more

I usually stick to what I know, and what I know is Pieology. As of late, the name Pieology is as ubiquitous to pizza as Chipotle is to burritos. Not wanting to make the far drive to Irvine Spectrum for lunch (I work near SNA), I decided to try out Blaze. Parking was rather difficult to find during lunch, but my coworker and I managed to snag a spot that didn't involve too much walking. There was a line almost to the door, but you can expect that from most places during lunch. I didn't like that they didn't have all the toppings listed out for you to browse while you were in line, but at least they had their "specialty pizzas" listed for you to mull over. My toppings were: Spicy red sauce, mozzarella cheese, salami, bacon, crushed garlic in oil (x2), basil, mushrooms, tomatoes, and pesto drizzle. My coworker and I grabbed one of the few seats that were empty, and within 5 mins, our names were called for our pizzas. (Note: they don't have ranch here). My pizza was very tasty. I'd attribute that to the extra garlic and pesto drizzle. Unfortunately, my pizza had a hard time staying up. Since the crust is very thin, it became very soggy from all the oily stuff (crushed garlic and pesto drizzle). It was a challenge to try holding a slice the normal way and feeding it into your mouth. I ended up eating my pizza with utensils. Other than that, I had no complaints. Maybe next time I won't go overboard on the toppings. read more

I like the ability to customize and order online however the online ordering process is a mess. I submitted an online order for 4 pizzas this morning at 9am for pick up at 11:45am. STRIKE 1 I received confirmation my prepaid pizzas would be prepared but not cooked which requires a check in, I purposely set the time for when I wanted the pizzas finished not prepared. STRIKE 2 I tried calling multiple times to confirm my order and request they cook the pizzas prior to my arrival, no answer. STRIKE 3 I am now here and have been waiting for my pizzas for the past 20 minutes. The workers claimed they did not receive my online order even though they were able to view it upon my arrival. Since I've been to pieology I just have to compare. They offer similar products after all. Price: Blaze Pizza $6.85 vs Pieology $7.50 At first glance this seems awesome since Blaze is cheaper. However, upon closer examination, I find out that the "build your own" has a restriction: you choose a combo of any 3 meats and cheeses. At first I was a little confused, is that 3 meats and 3 cheeses so 6 items total? Or is it 3 meats or cheeses meaning 3 items total? Turns out it's the latter. So you can only pick: 3 meats/no cheese, 2 meats/1 cheese, 1 meat/2 cheeses, no meat/3 cheeses. WHICH IS TOTALLY LAME!! At pieology, you can pile up the toppings, pick as many meats and cheeses as you desire. At blaze, not only do they limit the number of meats and cheeses you can choose, they also barely put any on your pizza. WHICH IS EVEN LAMER!! They put small tiny spoonfuls of topping on my pizza. There wasn't even enough mozzarella to cover up all the tomato sauce. It's also +$1 for an additional meat/cheese. NOTE: I wouldn't pick parmesan as one of 3 cheeses since they have parmesan, as well as red pepper, shakers near the soda machine. I ended up choosing: chicken, mozzarella, and perlini mozzarella as the 3 meats/cheeses along with some assorted vegetables. Perlini mozzarella are just these small balls of mozzarella cheese which was probably the only thing I liked. I wish they had put more on! The chicken was dry... ew. I had literally 4 little pieces of artichoke on my pizza. Sad. At blaze, gluten-free crust is +$3 (vs +$1 at pieology) and I was so appalled I didn't even want to try it anymore. So I got the regular thin crust which was ehh, nothing special. Overall, I was extremely disappointed. read more

So the first time I came, they just opened and I loved it! There were some talk amongst my friends comparing Blaze to Pieology. The big arguement here was the fact that Pieology then had unlimited toppings where as Blaze limited your meats. Fast forward to today and the playing field has been evened out. A simple pie (mozzarella, parmesan, red sauce) will cost you just $5, a 1 topping pie will cost you just $5.85 and a custom build it yourself (unlimited toppings) pie will cost you just $7.45! These prices, along with the quality of toppings, puts Blaze clearly on top of Blaze. Blaze is slightly underwhelming in terms of flavor, and the service really drives down its rating in my opinion. On my last visit, I was picking up an order for someone else, who ordered (I thought) over the phone. I went up to the cashier and said, "Hi, I think my girlfriend ordered a couple pizzas over the phone." The cashier responded with, "No, we don't take phone orders, so she didn't order anything from us." And proceeded to move onto the next customer while I was standing there. I asked someone else and they said, "Oh, she might have ordered online." So I called her and asked her, and yep, she ordered online. So I went back to the front of the line, asked if they received her order, and the dude saucing the pizzas says, "Nope, she's having connection issues obviously. It's instant, so she has a problem." Apparently this dude knows my girlfriend's internet better than she does! So I call her again, and she sends me the screenshot of her order via text, and I see that her order time was about 20 minutes before I spoke to the cashier originally. So I go back and show the same guy the screenshot, and he says, "Yeah, connection issues probably." Bro. Dude. Brosef. No. This was a confirmation page FROM BLAZE saying that they will be ready to "fast-fire" the pizzas on arrival to the restaurant. 20 MINUTES IN THE PAST. Not a big deal that they didn't get it, but the fact that they wouldn't own up to it - annoying. When they finally did get the order, about three different people made the pizzas. I ordered one more pizza on a separate ticket while there as well, and the girl who made my pizza did not understand the concept of extra pepperoni/salami. Four pieces of salami? That's considered extra? Literally four pieces of salami? PILE THAT ON THE PIE! When I asked for more, she looked more annoyed than anything and passed me on down the line. The last girl at the vegetable section of the line was nice/friendly, and she didn't seem to be annoyed. Pizzas tasted decent, but if you really want a good order-it-yourself-watch-them-make-it type pizza, go to Pieology instead. I love the idea of building your own pizza pies! This is the exact same concept as Pieology. I'm not sure if the price is the same, but I know the food taste the same. I mean come on, they're just vegetables, regular meatballs, and cheese. So I don't see why people are comparing the quality of the food...maybe one is fresher? I dont know...both places seem to have everything out in the open anyway. I guess you can start comparing the two places when a staff burn your pizza. Fast service and I think most of these workers are students. Everyone is young, has high energy, and are extremely friendly. I ordered online and when I got there, all they had to do was put the pizza in the oven for 5 minutes and it was ready to go! I basically loaded my pizza with everything (hey, a girl's gotta eat her veggies!), including all 5 kinds of cheese. How much did it cost me? A flat rate of $8! That's right. We've had 2 big orders from Blaze Pizza. The first time we were yelled at for not ordering online, and they complained we held up the line. So, the next time, we ordered online and it was a hot mess! They got everything wrong and forgot our salads. In addition to messing up the order, the pizza was soggy. Our order was suppose to be ready at a certain time. I got there and told them I was ready. They made me wait an additional 20 minutes for my order. A friend who waited in line got their pizza before us! I asked to speak to the manager and she was just as bad as the pizza we got that day. She kept making excuses for the wait. She's a lousy manager and needs to take a course in management, or even just pure customer service. This location is poorly run. I am a fan. I also will suggest that you choose the option of creating your own pizza instead of ordering from the pre-set menu list. The whole point of Blaze Pizza is to make your own style of pizza, plus the vegetables are unlimited!! And creating your own pizza is the same price as the pre-set pizza!!! My only minor problem here was that the employees sometimes speak really softly. There is somewhat of a glass wall in between the customers and the employees, and when an employee speaks softly you have no idea what they just said to you. For example when you ask what a certain item is that you see, you just end up nodding away and decide not to get that item...when in the end you would have loved some of that basil on your pizza!! Also Blaze Pizza is all about the thin pizza crusts. If you're looking for some chunky thick crusts, turn around and try Pizza Hut. read more

Thought I would update my review on this place. I work for an undisclosed delivery company and pick up here fairly often and it never ceases to amaze me how horrible the service is. I grew up working in a pizza place and it is ridiculous how horrible the service is here. It is like all the workers are stoned and have had absolutely zero customer service training. The whole time they are "helping" the customer they say absolutely nothing to them. I picked up an order here once and watched as the line cleared out only to find out that the person that had received my order, never bothered to make sure that it was made. The food is decent. the ingredients are okay. But how would you feel knowing that a high college student is making your food. Someone that is too lazy to even care that the pesto sauce is in the red sauce and the red sauce is in the white sauce. Or that meatballs are falling in the vegetables. Came here last night for dinner. The pizza is cheap ($6.85), but good. I love that they have their signature pizzas to choose from, and if you don't want that, you can build your own. For building your own, you can choose 3 meats/cheese options total. So like, 2 cheeses 1 meat or 2 meats and 1 cheese. Veggies are unlimited. Good selection of veggies too. Red peppers, cherry tomatoes, garlic, mushroom, artichoke, jalapenos...just to name a few. The crust is a thin crust. Oh, and you also get to choose from three sauces (bbq, pesto, or red). It was pretty packed when I went, and I heard it usually is. Good amount of seating inside. They also have patio seating and of course, just regular outdoor seating in the UTC area. Here goes UTC adding yet another awesome place to eat for UCI students. This place has the same concepts as Gogi and Chipotle in that you can choose what you want on your pizza. Blaze has an array of pizzas to choose from but opting to creating your own pizza is always fun. With the create your own pizza, you get to choose from an assortment of protein and cheeses. You are then able to add as much vegetables as you want to your pizza (note: the more ingredients on your pizza makes it harder to hold your pizza). Afterwards, they throw it in an 800 degree oven and your pizza is ready in a couple minutes! For about $7, you get a customized, gluten-free pizza that comes fresh out of the oven. The atmosphere is great and there is a good vibe from people who leave Blaze. It definitely helps business when Lebron James occasionally comes by when there's a Miami Heat match up in Los Angeles. 5 stars for Blaze read more

My bf and me got the Veg out. The vegetarian pizza with zucchini , red peppers, mushrooms, mozzarella, crumbled gorgonzola, and red sauce dollops . After you pick your toppings and pay the pizza comes out in less than 10 minutes. Because the crust is so thin, the pizza cooks fast. Pizza: It was tasty! For around 8 bucks we got a thin crust pizza about 6-8 diameters in size. It's not that big and it did leave us feeling unfulfilled.... Cons: I don't like that they give you dollops of sauce. I'll be eating a part that either has too much sauce or no sauce at all. Second, the pizza isn't loaded with vegetables, and vegetables are cheap too : (. Green Stripe Pizza: It was my first time there and the layout of topping and choices was a little overwhelming (in a good way) where I couldn't decide what to order. I ended up ordering from their signature pizza menu since I could not decide for myself what sauce, toppings, etc to add. They made the pizza in front of me and allowed me to add additional toppings. Afterward, they placed my pizza in a fire oven. The cook time wasn't long. It gave me time to get my drink, table, and condiments. The green stripe pizza was really good! I was surprised that the food was affordable (poor graduate student budget) and tasty! The pizza had a nice crisp to it (thin crust pizza) and I really liked the pesto. Big thumbs up in my book. Blaze is SO CUTE when you walk in.... If you look up, you realize that they've made the whole place to look like it's an oven! Color me amused! LOL! I also really enjoyed that the toppings and kitchen area were very large and open for all to see. The seating was also pretty clutch because there's a good amount of seating inside as well as a large patio area (complete with umbrellas) to eat outside. I was so amp'd to try this made-to-order pizza concept because I had heard so many great things about their crust. Also, I was happy to come here because my mother-in-law could get vegan cheese so we could all eat pizza together! She also had the gluten-free crust which was pretty good - definitely did not taste like cardboard! The regular/gluten-free crust here is really great if you're into that crispy thin crust deal. It is definitely more on the crispy side than Pieology which is a little more dough-y. Unfortunately, there were a few things that made them more 3 stars than 4 or even 5. The s'mores dessert was really underwhelming. It was a pre-made smore that was warmed up in their oven.... Eh, not impressed. Also, I was just not into their staff. They skimped on a lot of the toppings even after we asked for more; they were not very knowledgeable about the ingredients they were serving; and, really... New place in the UTC = irrational excitement: maybe this one'll be awesome! They never are, but hey, I never lose hope. Blaze is a reasonable addition. I'd say I'll be coming here about as often as Berkeley Dog, that is to say - maybe once a month. The prices are low enough to not be ridiculous for lunch: $7 for a personal sized skinny crust pizza with equally skinny toppings. I chose one of their recommended topping combinations rather than trying to build my own. Experience at build-your-own-Mongolian-BBQ places has taught me that I am not a cook. Most of what they had chosen looked to jive with my style of pizza topping anyway: light on the sauce, heavy on the veggies and herbs. I think what I got had artichoke hearts, ricotta, basil, and a few dollops of sauce, and my friend's had mozzarella, garlic, fresh tomato slices, and a dousing of olive oil. The sauce was heavily sweet and would not have been missed had it been totally absent. The cheeses were the best part - strange, since they came out of a tub on an assembly line. If you can, ask for more veggies - they put them on gingerly, like the vegetables are something distasteful. Ideally I would prefer more than 2 leaves of basil and 5 artichoke hearts on my pizza... but in a culture of 'eat your veggies or you won't get dessert', maybe the paucity is supposed to be a selling point. read more
