Block Coffee (Blossom Hill Rd in San Jose, near Whole Foods) is so pretty inside--super minimal, clean, and calming. I tried the matcha Einspänner and the cream on top was delicious, which made the drink really enjoyable at first. But the matcha itself was surprisingly grainy and not smooth, like it wasn't whisked properly. I also noticed the matcha looked pre-batched when I was there, which might explain the texture. I saw a lot of buzz about a new coffee shop so I thought I would go out of my way to try this. I really wanted to like this place, but the drinks were not worth driving 40 mins for. The line to order wasn't long, but the drinks took a while to come out. It wasn't clear where the line was because there were so many people that finished ordering and were waiting around inside and in front of the store for their drinks. The decorations and the block sign were cute though. They also have a small seating area in the back! First of all, they ran out of the block coffee. Their name and signature coffee is literally the block coffee! I know we came late in the day, but I would've thought they would prepare more of their signature. They also ran out of the financier that they give out for their opening :( We ordered the pistachio cream latte and the double matcha cream latte. The pistachio cream was weak and tasted almost artificial. After mixing it, the coffee lost any sweetness or pistachio flavor. The double matcha was good! Very strong matcha flavor, very creamy from the matcha cream, but the drink wasn't mixed well so you would get bits of matcha powder in your drink that sunk to the bottom. Also, like some reviews said, the cups were already small and the matcha wasn't even filled all the way! These were like $20! I got Matcha Eispanner drink and it wasn't whisked properly. Big chucks and very watery ratio. The eispanner was also watery and usually it's a thick creamy consistency at other places. My boyfriend got the double matcha and that was better in terms of better whisk and thicker consistency. Very long line for 2 girls working. I think they were overwhelmed. Ultimately, the matcha has good flavor. Though, you can see some of the powder on the bottom if you look at the bottom of the cup, but it's hardly much and it's not clumpy. It honestly has a good flavor for me to not mind that at all. I was very happy with it. However, I'm rating lower for the price. My card gets charged $9.29 for a drink that's supposedly $8.50. I know credit/debit get charged extra for transactions, but there is no other payment option. Second, the cup is small. I first tried Block when they shared on insta that they increased the cup size (see photo captions to see which one), but it seems the cups are smaller again. The smaller cup is not worth it for me based on the price. There are other locations in the bay where you will pay around the same for a decent size and smoother matcha. Third, there have been a few times where I've tried to come here when they open, but then it's still closed. I think they've been better at opening on time though. I get it, it's a small business and sometimes it's hard to open right around 8/8:10. I'm torn because I like how convenient this location is. I like that they're always nice, and superrrr fast! However, I would only come here if I was in a pinch and really was craving a nice tasting matcha since it's one of the only places nearby that isn't Peets or the Whole Foods coffee bar. Almost $8 for a small, lukewarm hazelnut latte wasn't all that impressive. The default tipping options go to 22% too, which is hilariously ambitious for a place with no tables. I had been looking for a coffee shop around this area and decided to stop in Block, which I had thought was an H&R Block (tax preparation) company until seeing it was a coffee shop. The shop itself is very... white. White floors, white walls, white counters, white stickers on the windows. A splash of color wouldn't kill anyone. I will give them this - the service was very fast. Yes, I was the only customer, but I still got my hazelnut latte in under 2 minutes. So if you're in a rush this place may be good. The parking lot isn't huge but it was empty, which was convenient although perhaps not a good sign. I might be back to try their iced drinks, although they do look like they'd be quite sugary. But as far as their self-proclaimed "hot" drinks, I don't see a reason to try again. read more

I am a huge fan of their matcha here but it's pricey and served in small sized cup while they FILL it with ice. I came in with friends and we noticed that they add crazy amounts of ice and my drink had a huge chunk like they didn't even bother to break it down. Definitely a good try but I don't know if I would come back due to the fact I'm paying nearly $10 for a cup of ice and 4 sips of matcha. The service was okay overall. Block is the newest cafe in South SJ. Although I do enjoy their drinks, they are extremely expensive, coming out to ~$10 a drink. While their drinks are good (their matcha einspanner is delicious), there are definitely other cafes out there that provide the same quality and deliciousness without the high price tag. OK, to be fair, I came during their soft opening? Or maybe the first week after officially opening, so things may have changed since. It's a new Korean-owned cafe that recently opened, offers a nice variety of Korean-inspired drinks. I tried their (hot) berry yuzu tea since it was later in the day- super gooood esp on a cold night! It was initially made iced, but they quickly corrected it without any issues. There were only 2 employees working, so service was on the slower side, but they were both very friendly and hospitable. Be sure to check out their (free) photobooth right by the register to snap a pic before (or after) you order. We also noticed a cozy seating area in the back of the shop. No photos, I was on the run. Walked in and there were a few others in line and taking photos. The place is clean and small, I didn't see anywhere to sit. Placed my order with the barista, she was very nice and friendly. My order was the iced vanilla latte and iced einspanner latte. The vanilla latte was good, not at all sweet, subtle vanilla flavor and it definitely didnt taste artificial. The einspanner was very milky, and not overly sweet. They have a station by the glass where you can add sugar packets or liquid sweetener. Barista made the drinks fairly quickly. I appreciate the fast service! Finally a place in the blossom valley area which serves matcha drinks. I tried their double matcha latte and I'm happy to say that it was satisfying, not bitter and yet not overly sweet. There was some matcha powder at the bottom of the drink as other have also noted. I also tried their pistachio cream latte and that was okay, the cream was delicious with actual pistachio but the overall drink was too milky for my liking. Overall the drinks are on the smaller side and the price is rather steep for this size, especially if you go with the default ice level. They can improve on wait time but I understand they just opened up and need time adjusting to demand. They have a small photo booth where you can take pictures (get a sticker) while you wait in line. All in all, with some small improvements I can anticipate crowds as more people learn about it considering it's a new coffee shop next to some busy shopping plazas. I will be coming back and I'm looking forward to them expanding their menu (perhaps a fruit matcha drink) or any seasonal items! It was a chill Thursday afternoon when I was craving a matcha latte. This newer cafe had been recently blowing up, so I really wanted to try it. Therefore, my partner and I arrived to try some drinks. We got a matcha latte as well as a coffee drink. The matcha was really nice and strong with a ton of matcha in it. The coffee however, was pretty boring but still good. This place is definitely one of the more expensive cafes I have seen and I think the matcha makes sense as they do use a lot, but the coffee not so much. Decided to check out this coffee spot as I was looking for a new place to try. I came across them through Instagram and it's a beautiful, minimalistic coffee shop. I got the pistachio cream latte. I wasn't sure how to feel about picking up the order in the same place where you order -- I think those two areas should be separated, because it's a little awkward having to stand right next to the person who's trying to order. This is my 2nd time at block and i really love it! It honestly reminds me of matcha from japan. A regular matcha latte is $7 which is average pricing nowadays. The portion sizing is a little on the smaller side but it is my go to matcha place. I also tried the new banana matcha and it was delicious, not too much banana flavor to overpowered the whole drink and i think it has a touch of vanilla in it. We were greeted by the staff, and got a signature Block coffee and a lavender tea. The drinks are solid, but the shop itself needs attention. The floor in the back needed mopping, the tables were dirty and it looks really rundown for a brand new coffee shop.
