A salad menu so extensive, that it took me the whole 10 minutes I was waiting in line to make a decision. What even made me even more indecisive was the UPick menu which must've at least 100 ingredients on there. Ultimately, I ended up with the Fattoush salad ($13.75) a huge bowl of romaine, escarole, radicchio, cherry tomatoes, cucumber, red onion, scallions, garbanzo beans, nicoise olives, herbs, crispy pita and feta cheese. Oh man, that's a lot of ingredients! I asked for the champagne-sumac vinaigrette on the side since these type of places always put too much dressing. I want to be able to taste my greens! I was disappointed with the crispy pita (chopped into small pieces that were barely distinguishable) and with that price point, I expected some kind of protein. He liked his Clubber sammich ($13.50) which was generous with the turkey slices, bacon and pepper jack cheese. But I really think it was the jalapeno-bacon aioli that sealed the deal. I don't ever get excited by sandwiches, but I have to admit, it looked really good. For the price point of my salad, I'd say it's a bit expensive for something without protein. In the future, if I end up here again, I'd be sure to opt for the spicy tuna salad instead and pay a couple of dollars more. read more

Please note that I am starving & livid. Ordered a meal for my family including a Skirt steak sandwich for myself to go. Drove twenty minutes home and no sandwich. Called and they said I could "come and get it". Offered me fries or tator tots as compensation. I had one thing, on my first and only visit so far, and this review is based on that. The spicy tuna salad I had was bomb. It was super tasty and large (thankfully because it was $19.) I would definitely go back just for that. FYI, the spicy tuna is what you would get if you ordered a spicy tuna roll at a sushi restaurant. Same flavor and same shredded/chopped consistency. If you live in Marin, surely this is a staple in your life and if not, it should be. When you can't bring yourself to build the most beautiful salad, just come here. I used to be hooked on the Kale Cesar then Cobber only. Then tried Chinese Chicken but not such a fan compared to Cobber. Stayed Cobber Salad until I had their fall harvest Salad with Pomegranate seeds & Brussel Sprouts and maybe some Squash~seriously the Ultimate Salad! But everyone has their favorite salad. My husband finally changed from the Kale Cesar to the Harvest to the Tostada Salad! Then when Harvest Salad converted to a different blend in spring, I finally tried some of his Tostada salad and it is my new FAVE currently 11/2019. It really is the perfect salad with beans and thin crispy chip and the dressing and pepitas! It will be hard for you to decide, but just know it is a wonderful journey and you are doing something good for yourself by having this beautiful salad. :-D If you are not feeling like a salad there are sandwiches, my kids just LOVE their grilled cheese and side of fries, something totally comforting about it. A peruse of other Yelp reviews you'll see complaints about prices. Maybe $14 for a loaded up salad seems pricey to you. Take in mind that it is large enough that most people do not finish it. The ingredients are good quality, it will be tasty. Standing on-line, ordering at the cashier and then getting a number plaque for table delivery may be cost efficient but at the price point most competitors would offer table service. I'm addicted to the greens and beets salad here, which comes with seasonal fruit. I've had it with everything from strawberries to blueberries and back, and it's pretty delicious. I'm also completely onboard with their French fries, which are thin and ultra crisp. The fries taste great with their homemade buttermilk ranch dressing, although I realize that defeats the purpose of a salad, but come on! Realizing Blue Barn Gourmet is in a mall, it still has managed to do a lot with aesthetics, from the mason jars and chalkboards to the reclaimed wood. It is one of the better food options in the Town Center. Bottom line: I really try to stick solely to the salads here. I find the sandwiches here just okay. When I feel like splurging on a salad I always order the Tostada. I love the different textures (pumpkin seeds, crispy tortilla strips, jicama) and the chipotle dressing packs some heat. Sometimes I'll add protein- I recommend getting the rooster chicken instead of their regular chicken. The rooster chicken is grilled, but on the dryer side. The sandwiches are also delicious. Some of my favorites are the Skirt, Kickin' Chicken, and the Rooster. The main reason why I'm giving 4 stars is because the prices have been steadily increasing. read more

Such a disappointment! I was overcharged $15.75 for just my lettuce portion of my "u-pick" salad and then individually charged $1 per dressing and topping, totaling $20.75 for a basic salad! I have a gluten allergy, after testing with my nima it tested positive for gluten... my salad contained lettuce, tomatoes, apples, carrots, and cucumber and olive oil and balsamic vinegar on the side.. couldn't even eat the overpriced, charged incorrectly salad. We stopped into Blue Barn when we spent a day in Marin for a coffee class. Blue Barn offers both vegetarian and meat lover options which suited everyone's hunger. We ended up ordering the steak sandwich, kale Caesar and a cup of soup because it was cold out. The steak sandwich was a bit light on the meat for thE cost, but it was flavorful. The portions of their salads are huge. It could easily feed two people. The soup was a basic tomato soup, nothing very fancy. Overall, the ordering process was easy and the food came out pretty quickly. Water cups and utensils are inside, self serve. I also like that this location has outdoor seating that is dog friendly. Since it was a cold day, they restaurant did have the heaters on but it barely reached where we were sitting and the host said they weren't allowed to adjust the settings. read more

The value is what I'm rating here. For years I've been in full support of the $26 salad. I've happily ordered to go, dine in, date night and dinner parties serving delicious healthy, expensive salad. Blue Barn has been my #1 go to. I've noticed the size of my salmon has been shrinking. I weighed it - 3.18 oz. They don't make any claims that it's supposed to weigh more than this. I'm pretty confident I should expect a 6 oz piece for an extra $8.50. I tried contacting them on their website, they don't have a way to do this so I sent them a DM on instagram a week ago without response. So, I'm letting the community know how disappointed I am that they're raising prices and cutting portions. Yes, I still think it's the best salad in Marin and will still order. Went with two friends for dinner on a weeknight. I had the Kale Caesar Salad with steak added - I'd give it a B, but for $22, it should have been an A. The ingredients all tasted fresh and it was flavorful, but it needed oomph - I prefer a garlicky caesar with an obvious anchovy essence. This was too tame. But even if the dressing had been stronger, it would still have not seemed worthy of its restaurant entree price tag. It was just greens, steak (a moderate amount), grated cheese, and croutons...which I knew going in, but nothing on the menu seemed to be a decent value. And my friend ordered it, so copying her solved my indecision. My other friend took a different approach - she ordered the steak sandwich, a side caesar, and fries. This seemed like the way to go, although it cost about the same amount. She had a more varied meal and took half her sandwich home. And it all looked very yummy. I still think they make their money off bread and lettuce, what with the ratio of those things to meat...which often isn't included, but either way, you pay for it since it's either built in to the price point or added as a surcharge. I'm used to paying $15+ for dishes where protein is the main component. I know organic produce and high quality ingredients are expensive, but $15-25 salads and sandwiches are hard to justify. Even with large portions (again, more lettuce and bread than other ingredients). If bacon and avocado or artichoke hearts had replaced some of the greens, I would have been satisfied with what I paid. So I won't be choosing to go to Blue Barn when I can make the same thing at home (with more of the good stuff) for way less money. A casual eatery with counter service should have prices that reflect that. The hype feels a lot like The Emperor's New Clothes. read more

tl;dr- Don't hesitate! Ok this is odd... because this usually happens with bars, back in the old days. The people here are family. I want to treat them better than most of my relatives. They're sweet, smart, helpful, real, and simply the best. All of them. If I weren't some awkwardly super tall random dude I would try to hug people that work there. I know it's spendy, and I get it's a GIANT salad. Not Seinfeld big salad... GIANT. But everything about the place is excellent, the sandwiches are amazing, the side menu can afford you an extravagant meal of fries, side caesar, and tasty tasty fried chicken for less than your "is this farmer's market overpriced like for real" reaction. Service deserves 5 stars!! My server was friendly and efficient. But the food was surprisingly disappointing, especially for the price. Our orders were properly prepared (again, 5 star service), but the fried chicken sandwich was inedible. More description on the menu would have been helpful. It had a hot pepper that permeated the chicken, its coating, the coleslaw, and even the roll. My husband took a few bites and threw it in the garbage because his mouth was on fire. He may be a wimp but with a better description, he would have ordered the steak. I ordered a salad that was fine but so small for the price that it wasn't worth it. I'm happy to support local businesses and tip well, especially during the pandemic, but there are many that need support and I'll find another. Nice staff, and some fresh ingredients, but fried chicken was simply frozen chicken tenders, coated with Panko crumbs, and overcooked in deep fryer until it was the consistency of cardboard. Salad dressing must be in short supply since the salad was so lightly dressed one could not taste the dressing. On the plus side, the beef was nicely cooked and well flavored, but this salad, too, needed some dressing. If you want a good chicken salad, walk down to the Pig and Pickle for truly nicely presented ingredients, good BBQ chicken (or brisket) and good salad dressing. Have not tried Orangebird, and perhaps that is better fried chicken. During the week, the vibe here is nannies caring for young children, and mothers giving their children an outing, which when school lets out is supplemented by high school students. I went in here thinking "OMG, $14 for a sandwich? they gotta be crazy!" Well, yes, OK, it's a little crazy... but I had the "Provo" Grilled Cheese sandwich and it was incredible! I would have taken a picture for y'all but it looked too darn good and once I started eating it I couldn't put it down long enough to dig my phone out of my pocket. Now, I can't attest to the other stuff they have (like salads), because I've never had a good salad at any restaurant (and honestly, salad is boring), but the sandwiches are amazing, and that's that. Fortunately, I don't have to drive all the way to Sonoma anymore for some m Blue Barn's BLT is a true winner. Mouthwatering smoked bacon, goat cheese, heirloom tomato, mixed greens & pesto aioli on sliced country levain. I'm drooling right now just thinking about it. It's definitely a hearty sandwich that'll put you in a food coma. Now be warned, Blue Barn isn't exactly the cheapest place in town. This BLT will run you about $14 after tax. And then if you order a beverage and leave tip, you'll have dropped $17/$18 for lunch. But man oh man, this sandwich is worth the price. Blue Barn has plenty of indoor/outdoor seating. If I could give less than 1 star I would. $50 for two salads is outrageous. And they're not even that good. And if you order chicken or shrimp on your salad to go, be aware that they put hot food on top of a cold salad so when you get home and you open the salad, all of the lettuce is wilted because of the heat. I've come here a couple of times and each time have been very happy with the food. The most recent time I came here, I came with my boyfriend and we each ordered our own meals and got a side of fries. When the gal working there brought us the food, the fries were missing and mentioned that. She comes back about 10 min later saying "there was no order of fries in our system" but handed us a side of fries anyways. We both thought that was a great management move, as we definitely ordered the fries but the girl at the cash register must not have put the order in the system. I was enjoying my salad when I bit down on this large and jagged stick. They cut my mouth a little bit but luckily I didn't swallow it or do any further damage. When I called to speak to the manager and explain the situation she seemed unconcerned and said that sometimes the stems can be left on the greens and that's what it must be. I assured her this was NOT a salad stem but a larger and hard stick that should t be in my food. She gave another weak "sorry" and didn't offer any compensation.
