During the heatwave there are a few things I tend to eat. One thing which doesn't affect me when the sun is out is sandwiches. Not all sandwiches are the same and are built differently. Some have buns and some have sourdough like some in my social media feed. Then there are some which are good using baguettes and lots of vegetables . I am fortunate that San Francisco has lots of banh mi places throughout the city. There is one located on Fillmore street and it's called Ban Mee. On a Summer stroll in Lower Pacific Heights I landed on Fillmore street at Bun Mee. Inside there are a few tables and a menu which offers drinks like Vietnamese Coffee to matcha for Don Juan de la Matcha and even purple taro cloud drink. I can for the banh mi and I ordered the combination with pate and veggies. It was tasty and the meat was tender but the baguette can get a little flakey like some in SF. The pate gave it a bit more flavor. A good place to grab Banh Mi in Lower Pacific Heights. I feel a theme developing in Pacific Heights: if a spot isn't brand new, the quality goes down and the prices go up. Unfortunately, this holds true for Bun Mee in Lower Pacific Heights. I stopped by for lunch on a Monday afternoon and ordered the ribeye steak dip sandwich. I normally get Mama Tran's Crispy Egg Rolls, but at today's prices, I had to skip them. The sandwich itself was overpriced, lacked real flavor, and came with very little meat. Instead, it was packed with tons of cilantro and bean sprouts--to the point where you could barely see or taste anything else. The jalapeños and the dipping au jus helped save it, but you can definitely find a much better, more authentic bánh mì for a better price closer to Civic Center in Little Saigon. On the positive side, the cashier and waitstaff were helpful, kind, and solid overall, though it does take a while for the food to reach your table these days. The ambiance is fine, offering a decent amount of indoor seating (including a couple of booths) along with a few outdoor tables along the sidewalk. Located along a busy stretch of Fillmore, Bun Mee often gets busy. The seating at this location is minimal here so it can get crowded and the tables are really close together unlike their downtown location which has much more space. It's a good place to get something to go and take to nearby Alta Plaza Park. They have a simple menu with basic staples like Pho, and everything is good. I love their fried chicken sandwich, it's one of the best ones I've had, it's super savory and I like the sauce they use. read more

I ordered ahead online a lemongrass tofu sandwich for pickup and asked for no jalapenos and no peanuts. It was ready on time and they followed my request accurately. The restaurant has some outdoor tables along the sidewalk. I could mostly taste the cilantro, mayo, and pickled carrots. It was okay, but I felt it was overpriced relative to the size (at least, I know I can get more for the same money from some other places that sell banh mi). I guess I'm basic. I kept trying to find a better vermicelli noodle bowl in SF, but at the end of the day I just keep coming back to Bun Mee. Who would have thought that a fast casual restaurant I discovered at the airport would have my favorite vermicelli bowl in the city. The chicken is always juicy and flavorful, the noodles are excellent, and the big differentiator imo is that their bun bowls come with plenty of lettuce and other vegetables. And the ratios of everything are just right. The sweet potato fries do not hold up well with delivery - I still maintain they're my favorite sweet potato fries in the city when they're fresh, but unfortunately once they cool down they're soft and limp. read more

Among 4 locations, this place has the best sando! Meat is fresh and tasty! Five spice chicken has the right amount of basil and veggie, very balanced! Cashier and waitresses were also helpful and kind. Keep asking me if I need any other support - as a solo eater, I might not finish up a whole sando and fries, they will provide takeout boxes and also watch my stuffs when I used the bathroom. Stopped in for some quick dinner and ended up getting the lemongrass pork banh mi and crispy egg rolls. It wasn't busy and ordered at the counter. Food came out fairly quick. Inside had seating and some outside seating as well. The egg rolls were good. I liked the filling and how crisp and not greasy they were. The sandwich was a pretty good portion but pork wasn't too flavorful and felt slightly dry. We also tried the fried chicken sandwich and was good. It was lightly battered but not very crisp. Still my go-to Banh Mi sandwich place in San Francisco. They go for about $13.75 each. Some might say they are the yuppie Banh Mi place but I like the place. Food and location is clean. I usually get the Lemongrass pro or 5 spice chicken, but when they occasionally bring back the catfish that is my favourite I never miss. Salt and pepper fries are a must. Jalapenos are REQUIRED. The pickled carrots and daikon mixture was too sour and overpowering. I think it had pate but barely, didn't taste any butter/mayo, flavors were so off and meat was dry. This is the first time I had to throw out a banh mi . 1/5 If you want good banh mi for half the price, come visit Duc Huong or Huong Lan in South Sacramento. Area is kind of sketch but just come during the day before nightfall and it's normally busy with crowds. I ordered the lemongrass pork sandwich. The flavor was pretty good but there was hardly any pork in it. Of what was there, it was over 50% fat (which I pulled out). Maybe this was unusual. The chicken in the rice bowl was perfectly seasoned and cooked and all the ingredients balanced well together. I am not always big on Vietnamese cuisine I think because of the mint forward flavor profile but this was really delicate and flavorful. The Brussel sprouts were served with a tasty sauce and wings were crispy and fried fresh. The only underwhelming thing was the egg roll but I would totally come back for everything else again. Walking along Fillmore and in search of some food. Hubs wanted to try Bun Mee. Ordered the Kale Mango salad with grilled chicken and the catfish sandwich to share. Love the softness of the French bread. The catfish was light and crispy - good flavors but needed a little more sauce as it was a little on the dry side. As for the Kale Mango salad, there was quite a bit packed in the bowl. The grilled chicken was well flavored. We couldn't finish it all and packed the rest to go - still looked like a full portion leftover. The salt and pepper fries were hot and crispy - good portion as well. I'm surprised by the semi low reviews for this place but maybe it's due to expectations and what we expect in a Vietnamese restaurant. My expectations for Bun Mee is that it's a fast casual place for popular Vietnamese food like vermicelli bowls and banh mi. The menu met my expectations. It's not as extensive as other Vietnamese restaurants but at the same time that really wasn't what I was looking for that day and if you want that there are other options. Got the combo banh mi. Price was pretty comparable. Service was fairly quick especially since there was one person using two cash registers. The banh mi had a really crispy baguette and in the middle I especially loved the pickled radish and carrot. Flavors were spot on and while i usually prefer my banh mi not spicy (which they don't have the option for), the mild spice level was bearable. read more

Not the best or most authentic Vietnamese place in SF, but if you live in pacific heights or happen to be in the area and want Vietnamese food this place will do the trick. There's just not a lot of vietnamese options in this part of town. The best Vietnamese food is probably either you going to be in the Tenderloin or Richmond district. I usually get the bun bowl here. I don't know how to explain it, but I personally prefer the crispy egg rolls with a different type of skin/wrap, these ones seem more Chinese style. read more

First, I need to say my first experience here was terrific the other day, I ordered the tofu sandwich and garlic fries, both of which were generously portioned and very competitively priced. My mother ordered the classic combo sandwich and also enjoyed it quite a bit. My mother is in a wheelchair and they happily accommodated her chair and even held the door open for us on the way in and out. Top notch service and good food, at great prices. So why only two stars? I came back and ordered the chicken bone broth soup for my mother, to go this time. I ordered the fries (again generously portioned) and the Organic Tofu Rolls for myself. As you can probably tell by now I'm a vegetarian. I brought the meal to my mother and bit into the tofu roll, only to find a piece of dead crustacean in my mouth, and plenty more in the rest of it. I'm not militantly vegan or anything, but the idea of having dead flesh in my mouth is the equivalent of finding a dead roach in my morning coffee. Just... NO. I instantly threw up my bite into the takeout bag and lost my appetite immediately. My mother ended up eating the rest for me so I didn't bother going back to exchange the order, my appetite was long gone anyway. Still, this was a terrible experience for me and I doubt I'll be going back, even though they made such a great first impression.
