Salsa is good. Food is not. For the life of me, I CAN NOT figure out why everyone loves this place? Maybe the drinks are awesome or something. We went there at lunch and the service was not good, and we got seated on the patio of the patio (hard to explain, but there are two patios). It took us 20 minutes to get our waiter to order the food, then it was wrong. I wouldn't think too much of it, but I have had at least 4 meals here in the last two years, hoping against hope that my friends knew something I didn't. Ive been going here for 25 years. Excellent service and food. My wife snd I first dated while going here and we met Doug and Migel who were awesome. We went so often they out our picture on the wall w Red Miller and other broncos. It was just a little hole in the wall back then. They have always had the best margaritas and salsa in town. A restaurant called Blue Bonnet that serves MEXICAN food? The name of the joint isn't so indicative of the food you'll be served inside; as unauthentic as the restaurant sounds, the food isn't half bad. As a native Californian I have high expectations for Mexican and will pretty much seize any opportunity to try out a new place given my fairly consistent mexicana food cravings. Anyway, we decided to go here for our last team dinner at a conference we were attending in Denver. Our main criteria was some place cheap and we found exactly that at Blue Bonnet. The prices were totally reasonable. My entree (which was huge) was only $10. We also got guacamole and some chili cheese dip as well as multiple pitchers of margaritas that were pleasantly, quite strong. All in all, I don't think we spent more than $28 a head. Which is incredibly, unbelievably cheap. The food itself was good. Definitely not the best I've had but it satisfied the craving and I devoured my entire plate. My main criticism is that we ate dinner on plastic picnic tables. Kind of cheap and lame. Despite the table scenario, everything was good and this would be a good choice for large groups. read more

Terrible food - everything out of a can. We so want to like this place because it is within walking distance but it is just awful food - we have been trying and trying for years. You leave feeling fat and gross, the chips and salsa are blah blah blah. No amount of tequilla could make the food tasty. Very white people Mexican food, watered down and tasteless. I would rather eat the butt out of a dead rhinoceros than ever eat here again. It pained me with every bite that right across the lot was the Imperial. Knowing that those people were enjoying their meal and I was stuck eating food that could best be described as a dare. I will forever view Blue Bonnet through the rose-tinted goggles of nostalgia, since my parents took my brother and I here almost every Sunday when we were kids. This place is by no means ritzy (I don't want to call it dirty, because that's not quite true, either. It exists somewhere in between clean and dirty. Maybe that's not a good thing), although I don't honestly know who would expect that from a Mexican restaurant in this part of town. That said, I love the bottomless chips and salsa, and it's a lot of fun to come with friends and enjoy a long afternoon here. I went with a friend the other night for some dinner as he claimed this place was awesome Mexican food. Since I've lived here thirteen years and never been there, (even though I lived in the neighborhood for a while) I was pretty sure his idea of awesome Mexican food and mine differed. It was a weeknight, but we were seated right away and service was pretty good. The chips and salsa were good. My horchata was OK, I've had better and I've had worse, but you do get free refills on horchata which you don't see everywhere. The food was pretty mediocre IMO. We both ordered different combo plates, and mine consisted of a beef taco, chile relleno and something else I didn't touch. The taco was ok, the relleno pretty good and the thing I didn't touch was, um...not touched. Overall, I'd say it's ok stuff for the price, but fairly unmemorable. read more

Went to the bluebonnet with parents and my brother for lunch. While the food was decent, we left there pretty frustrated. First, and most immediately annoying -- table size. They seated us, a party of 4, for a table that would be an ok fit for a table of 2, but not much else. To give you an idea of how small it was, the waiter had to rearrange our menus in order to get 4 glasses of water on the table as well as the menus. It was a feat of space engineering once the chips and salsa showed up. It's not like the place was full, so they tried to accommodate a party of 4. They just have really small tables in the atrium room. Second, the service. It wasn't the servers fault. She was hustling from table to table. But that didn't help us when we need a refill of water or soda, or when it took FOREVER to get our order in. The bright spot is the menu and food. lots of options, food tasted good, though the salsa was fairly non-memorable. I like that you can have a salad as opposed to beans and rice as a side. If ratings were food only, they would get 4 stars. But given we were consistently annoyed, the service and logistics gets 1 star. 2 stars seems fair. read more

I realized that a) we usually go there with them, at his request and b) it had been quite awhile since we were last there. They not only were able to accommodate Louisa's food elimination diet that I've spoke about previously, the manager stopped by our table to talk with her and tell her the extra step they would take to prepare her steak. Our server had explained it well to the chefs and the manager cared enough to do more and to stop by to tell Louisa. That's impressive. For the record, her diet is not about weight, rather eliminating foods that have been increasing her arthritis pain. Something like no suger, soy, wheat and a longer list of other foods. We each ordered from the special menu prepared for Cinco De Mayo weekend. I enjoyed Miguel's Shredded Chicken Tinga Tonga Tacos, which were a little spicey...in a good way. Amber had the same and Darrel enjoyed tamales. Our server, Abbie, did a great job and we were treated to a couple of songs from a Mariachi band. We came to visit with friends from out of town and enjoyed the great service. Our waiter was very accommodating, chips, salsa and water pitchers were refilled without having to ask. As far as the food, it's ok. Nothing that really stands out, we had 6 different dishes at our table. To be honest, I'm shocked that this only has 2.5 stars. I have never had a bad time here. I mean, once the service was slow, in that we actually had time to nosh on the chips and salsa before the food came out, but most of the time, we haven't gotten more than a few chips in our bellies before the food is on the table. They are impeccable about filling up our salsa and iced tea, and bringing out fresh chips for new groups. I don't understand why people think the service isn't awesome? Yes, they charge $1 for chips and salsa. UNLIMITED, delicious, chips and fairly mild salsa (good for me, perhaps not so good for spicy lovers), but they ask first, and have signs all over the place saying so, unlike some places. They have HORCHATA, which is one of the most delicious non-alcoholic drinks ever (disclaimer - I have not tried the Bonnet's booze yet) and have an incredibly friendly vegetarian menu -- all of the vegetarian items are in red, so you don't have to ask about chicken broth or lard. Their beans (both black and refried) are vegetarian, as is their red sauce, and you can get the stuffed poblanos and/or tamales vegetarian style. I love the smart size, smart price section. $7 for two enchiladas (any kind), beans and rice (and you can always sub a salad for beans/rice with no charge), but sometimes I go for one of the combos to get a chili relleno. My partner loves the stuffed poblano. My bestie loves the sweet corn tamales. I've never had a main course I didn't like (though I found the gazpacho to be too spicy for me). Blue Bonnet is my go to, vegetarian friendly, quick service, affordable Mexican place. Almost never a wait, and so many great options, I'll definitely be coming back. read more

The food is very yummy! I ordered the tacos on (Taco Tuesday) one fish taco and one chicken taco the chicken is ok but the fish was absolutely excellent!!! My mom ordered a chili rianos and a fish taco,She said the riano didn't taste very good it was sour, but the fish taco was very good. I will be coming back here again. I really enjoyed there home made chip's and salsa. The patio was so nice also. Visiting my sister in Denver, we inevitably started talking about missing the food we grew to love back home in Houston: Tex-Mex. A few minutes later we were bundled up and in the car on the way to Blue Bonnet. The chili con queso, margaritas and cheese enchiladas kicked our craving, but was certainly lacking from the deliciousness found back home. ugh, this was probably the worst food I've had in Denver. I am from California, and am a bit of a mexican food snob. I had been here once when I first moved to Denver, and remembered it having lots of cheese. Came back again recently while getting my tire fixed in the neighborhood. The chips and salsa cost $1.00, and the chips were stale. Everything was covered in a thick layer of really gross preshredded cheddar. I know you vegetarians are happy for lard-free beans, but they are boring. I left about half the food on my plate, which was mostly just cheese. The patio area was nice considering the location, I could see eating food somewhere else and then coming here for margaritas. If you want a big plate of melted cheese, this is the place for it. read more

Look at Blue Bonnet for what they do well. Their deck and outdoor patio is spacious and breezy so you can enjoy the beautiful springtime weather. The chips and mouth watering salsa are fantastic and just keep on coming. The service is no nonsense, attentive, & fast. The margaritas are served strong at a fair price. Finally, the food is delicious true Tex-Mex. This long time family run Denver institution located at Broadway just south of W. Alameda is somewhat of a dive inside. The decor is nothing fancy and outdated but comfortable and utilitarian. Their outdoor seating is most appealing to these Yelpers. Been coming to Blue Bonnet for years and love the Combination "O" with a tamale, chili relleno, and cheese enchilada smothered in vegetarian red sauce. I've been here twice. Each time I got the same old boring thing. The AWESOME The Blue Bonnet Chimi Changa- steak! I like their salsa- it's a bit spicy but I like it hot so fine by me. The chips and drinks were fine- nothing to write home about. The service each time was... well... crapy frankly. BUT- I'd still go back for the CCs. I "heard" the sopapillas are amazing but I just couldn't do the carbs...and the sugar...and the fat...even with all the oohs aaahs and mmmms that came from the others at the table. ;-) **NOTE- this is not a traditional deep fried chimi changa- but it's absolutely one of the best I've ever had and SO worth trying a "traditional dish" a new way. You know sometimes when you are flipping through the channels and stop at a movie you have seen before, not because you love it or have been wanting to re-watching it because you missed something before but because watching a mediocre movie is better than the HSN or just surfing because you can decide what you want to watch. Well when you feel like that about food I recommend the Blue Bonnet Fairly good Good Mexican and very attentive waiters. Our salsa never got low and our waters were always full and cold. First of all, I'm not sure why this is called a cafe and lounge because it's definitely just a Mexican restaurant with televisions. Lounge, yes. Cafe? No. I will admit the patio seating has a beautiful view and it was perfect for watching the sunset, but the tables and chairs look like they came from a garage sale and not in a cool trendy way. Wow, I am AMAZED to say that I still haven't found a "favorite" good Mexican food place yet. I've been to Blue Bonnet about 5 times in the past 4 years, and the visits were 100% due to sake of convenience. Each of these visits were immediately followed by disappointment, and asking myself, "Why the heck do I keep coming back here when I know the food is mediocre at best?" The help, however, has always been friendly. The tangerine margarita is pretty tasty, but that's all I can say. I once tried a special, which was some kind of meatloaf-in-a-burrito type creation, and it tasted like a microwave dinner. My bad on that one, for sure. I don't know WHAT I WAS THINKING. I am still on the hunt for an awesome Mexican food restaurant. I've been absolutely spoiled by Scottsdale's "Frank and Lupe's" in AZ. I would highly recommend it if you're in the Phoenix/Scottsdale area. On our last visit I ordered a carnitas burrito - I've been making my way around Denver's Mexican restaurants just to sample carnitas. The entire meal was awful. Awful! The burrito was so very bad - the moderately dry, shredded pork was seasoned with something I could not identify. Green chili sauce was not what was covering the burrito. The rice and beans were beyond bland and barely edible. Blue Bonnet should pay customers to eat the crappy tasting chips and salsa instead of charging customers $1.50 for a "bottomless" bowl; Servers - quit wasting water! Stumbled upon this place with a friend while looking for dinner. It looked alright as we walked over from the parking lot. Coming closer, the insides looked like a cafeteria. OK, I can deal with that. Just don't expect it to look nice. Got myself one of their "Specialty" items, the burrito plate. If this is one of their specialty items, then I really don't want to try their "normal" fare. Too be honest the servings are big, like enough that I didn't finish it (and I usually make a point of finishing my meal). That or it really just wasn't good enough to force down. The food all tasted the same, kinda bland, and greasy. Funny enough, I looked around for hot sauce to spice it up a bit, and there was absolutely none to be found. Friend got the fish tacos. Two of them were served on a gigantic bed of lettuce and tomatoes. He ate the tacos and left everything else, it still looked like he had a full plate. His sentiment as well was "meh". I'm a little peeved that the chips and salsa cost a dollar. A dollar's not a whole lot, but what makes me angry is that our server didn't tell us it cost extra. He brought them to the table just like any other mexican joint I've been too. I noticed when we got the check, and then spied a small 8"x11.5" piece of paper on the wall stating that chips were indeed $1. In any case, probably won't be coming back again. read more
