Husband and I have been eating here for 26 years. We no longer live in Denver, but make it a point to eat here when we are in town--several times a year. The owner stops by all the tables, every time to check to see if everything is satisfactory . The salsa is the thin style, and we love the flavor. Hubby orders the F combo every time. Fun comedy open mic is the only reason for the star. I think they dumped a can of boiled chicken into a tortilla and said it was an 8 dollar burrito. No beans or rice on the side either. Also took us forever to get the bill and I had places to be, otherwise I guess the restaurant is okay. Feels more like an iHop than a Mexican restaurant though. We like coming here. A nice solid Mexican restaurant. Not super fancy, but not super expensive either. Nice margaritas - from house margaritas up to special ones. We have tried many of the menu items and they are all decent. But the kicker are the stuffed poblano peppers. Filled with a ton of veggies, spices and meat, they are delicious. I remember when the food here was actually good and that had to be over 15 years ago! For the price you would expect something that actually tasted edible! I would consider what I ate quite similar to Casa Bonita. The last two visit prior you thought we would have learned but we figured we would give it one and final time, maybe the visits were an off day for the restaurant however this isn't the case. My head was saying that this place deserves four stars, but my gut, which was full of grease after eating at Blue Bonnet, says to give it three. As usual, the stomach wins. This place was on top of service. Right away, we had a basket of chips in front of us, just begging to be devoured. Unfortunately, the salsa had way too much garlic and resembled Campbell's tomato soup. The strawberry margarita that I ordered was strong at first, but then tasted like syrup after the first impression. We tried the premium margarita and they got that one right. For dinner, I ordered a chorizo burrito which was actually pretty good. It has fresh jalepenos, which I usually don't see at any Mexican restaurants. I ate the burrito happily--and felt pretty terrible afterwards. Like I said, the service was awesome, however, the atmosphere was not. There were uncontrolled children roaming everywhere, which I know is not the restaurant's fault, but it still felt like we were in some kind of mind-numbing circus. Remember the chips and salsa that were so swiftly placed at our table? We were charged a dollar for them. Not a big deal, obviously, but it seems like if they bring you something without you asking for it, they shouldn't charge you. I was shocked at most of the reviews saying the food was greasy then my husband reminded me what I ordered. I ordered the grilled chicken tacos w/o dairy. They were light and fresh. The corn tortilla was not fried, but soft. I think if you thought more about your options on the menu you won't end up eating greasy food, order something on the healthier side. My husband had the chili relleno with chorizo w/o cheese and many substitutions and they got it right. The chips were good, they were the heavier style, large, but not out of the bag style like a lot of restaurants. The salsa was good, thin like I like it, spicy and a little bit smokey. Chips are a buck, I'd pay two. Our bill was $19 w/o tip. The service was good. He was available, but not a pest. The bathroom was clean. We don't drink so I can't comment on that. I've always liked the Blue Bonnet, and whenever I'm back in Denver, I go there. I like the atmosphere; it's divey and loud, but I feel comfortable in that kind of place. I only get the fish tacos and the margaritas, so I'm can't even comment on the food, except that the chips are not very good and the salsa's a little salty. But free food is always good, so I still eat it. Obviously, I love the fish tacos. I like how the fish isn't breaded, and that they use roasted peppers and fresh tomatoes. Yum. They have the fruity, girly margaritas that I like. I feel like if I have a few mango margs, then I'm getting my Vitamin C. But there's also manly margs and a good beer selection, so my guy friends are happy to drink there too. The food was like warm, the queso was water based chedder blend of cheese ...sent back to warm. Came out cold and lumpy the first time. I had crunchy taco and a tostado combo . Not extravagant. Absolutely the BEST fish tacos in town - be sure to order extra of some of the creamy sauce that comes with it! I tried other places, and some are decent - but NONE compare - I love these things. I've been going monthly for at least 4 years, and have turned at at least 6 people on to this awesome lunch spot. A word of warning, they test fresher the closer to noon heading onward. Outside patio dining is nice, but the inside is getting aged - I imagine it won't be too long before they get some better seating and layout. read more

This place is a Denver institution, for that, it has to get some street cred! The food here isn't the best I've ever had, but the patio is sweet and the margaritas are even sweeter.... The food is cheap and they give you a lot of it, the margs are also cheap and a little light on the tequila, but, just drink 3 or 4 of them and you won't notice! Easiest way to get there from downtown is to hop on Broadway and go south (south to the border, baby) when you see the blue umbrellas and the packed patio, you're there! If you're heading from the south end of town, things get a lil tricky.....take Broadway north until it forks and turns into Lincoln, drive to Alameda, turn left, turn back onto Broadway and see above. Ok, ah, that was a whole lot-a directions but, now that you're there...eat. Oh, and, you know me, drink. Great margaritas (apparently I'm obsessed now--Jimmy B and I are BFF, I guess) . Great food. Great atmosphere. Good for everyone. During lunch hour, the place is packed but, there's hardly a wait. It's packed with lunch business meeting professionals in suits. Place is pretty cool inside. Our server was hustling the best she could but our service was sub par it was nice to have the manager stop by and refill our drinks though. Food was really good, I had the stuffed pablano peppers with beef could have used a little more spice but I was very pleased with the meal I ate. Upon initially walking in the side door we were a little confused where you go until we spotted the host stand across the room. At the stand we were barely acknowledged and then rushed to the table where the host threw down our menus and ran away without saying a word. Our server was very awkward and cold. After ordering and receiving our food quite quickly our server did not come by not even once to ask if we needed anything or how our food was. The food was decent but definitely over priced for what you got. We were looking for something that was vegetarian friendly and mexican, and after wasting too much time looking at menus and reviews on line, we deiced on the Blue Bonnet. The place is pretty neat and the crowd there on the saturday night we were there was pretty young, lots of margaritas being consumed - maybe its a good place to go before you go out. The place was clean and the staff was friendly and quick. The food was good, not too spicy - but mine really wasn't too hot (temperature-wise) either even though as the waitress said, the plate was very hot. I ordered the O combo .. Tamale, Chile Relleno, Cheese Enchilada and all were very good - not too spicy, decent flavor, and the constant flow of chips and drinks was good. . A lot of mexican places arent as veg friendly and the menu here at the blue bonnet is pretty clear with outlining what is vegetarian and what can optionally be made vegetarian which is good because i usually have to ask a dozen questions about sauce ingredients and food preperation before i can order, so it was nice to not have to ask .. Pretty cheap, and pretty good. Worth stopping in if you like mexican food. Maybe there is a more authentic mex place around but I dont know if those places would as easily please vegetarians. read more

The food was alright, seemed kind of bland. The service was mediocre at best (I was there with a large group of friends and we got shut off after about 2 drinks per person. I've never had that happen before, anywhere.) The atmosphere is kind of odd to me, not sure why. There is a diverse clientele, so that's fun, but overall it's not that great. Wow. Only 2.5 stars? Yelpers must have far higher standards than the people who keep the small parking lot packed on weekends (and whose cars spill over into the Sam's Club next door). I've tried to eat here twice before only to give up when I realized I would need to wait for a table. Well this Saturday I got into town early enough to catch them before the crowds hit, and I was glad I did. Nothing fancy, but the large menu is full of traditional favorites. They even have a bargain menu of smaller dishes for $6.95. I ordered the two tamales and was surprised at the size of the portion. The full-size must be enough for two. It was tasty enough and didn't seem like it had spent an eternity under a salamander before it was served (that and massive dumps of cheese are the two great sins of most Mexican restaurants). The place is clean, there's a patio that they leave open-air when they can, and the service was quick and good. Really, I don't take popularity as an endorsement most of the time (especially in the case of chain restaurants) but in this case I don't know what is missing. My family comes here regularly so we enjoy the friendliness of the owner and staff. I am totally addicted to the "Chipotle Shredded Pork with Raspberry Habenero Jam". I used to order a variety of other items from the menu but now I just come here for this very spicy sweet taco! I've eaten here a few times over the years for a few different reasons. One, is this place is a cheap with decent food options. Two, one of my friends who grew up here likes this place for the childhood memories it stirs up for her. Three, this place is a landmark. The food is ok, the margaritas are decent, but kind of small for the price. I've never had a bad meal here, but never a stellar one either. It's pretty much your run of the mill cheapo Mexican food place. Regardless of the bad reviews, and even my mediocre one, I'll keep eating here. This is one of those places that due to its location I would never pick to visit but everytime I come I'm impressed. The service is on point! and the food.... well its large portions but tasty. I eat a lot of Mexican food and I still haven't found my favorite dish in Colorado but this menu has lots of desirable options. I tried the Blue Bonnet Chimi Changa and it was perfect! My only regret was eating all of it! So much food but overall it felt fairly healthy for mexican. A decent portion of steak in a tortilla with cheese and green chilli on top with some fresh guac. pretty darn tasty. I also had a house marg and tried a sip of the coconut margarita which was really tasty and not overpowering. I'll be back. In fact, it's already on my calendar. :) read more

Finally a Mexican restaurant in Denver that exceeds my expectation. I have tried dozens of Mexican restaurants since moving to Denver 5 years ago. They have all been mediocre at best with everything pretty much tasting the same. My experience was positive from the minute I walked in until we left. The staff was friendly, the food fresh and light, and the service exceptional. I had the fish tacos. They were great. Just the right amount of fish, fresh toppings and creamy sauce. I was surprised at the lightness of the rice and the black beans were well seasoned. I will be back and will bring friends. read more

We've been coming here since this was a little dive two doors down from the current location. I have to admit that something went out of the place when it was sanitized and updated. I always get the same thing - the H. A wonderful crispy chili relleno, a cheese enchilada and a bean tostada. Lately though, the chips have been stale, and they keep putting the vegetarian sauce on the relleno, instead of the pork green chili. The service hasn't been up to the old standards lately, either. We'll keep going though, because even with the wrong sauce, no one makes rellenos like this. I should also mention that while there are only about 15 parking spaces at the restaurant, you can park in the Sam's lot, no problem. read more

The burrito had an odd smell to it, the chicharrones were chewy & tough not crunchy like they are supposed to be. I definitely will not be back.
