This place is a go to for American Mexican food and a good margarita. It's nothing fancy and it's nothing out of the ordinary. But it's almost always good and it's insanely fast. Worst service ever. Look I know you hate your job but in the service industry One has to at least try and be friendly. The door guy was a douche. Didn't even greet us or say a single word. I told him table for two and he motioned to the patio, do you speak? Perhaps a different job for you then. Waitress came over quickly but after we got our meh food she never once came to ask how our food was, she also was not friendly. Maybe she also hates her job. The salsa was so watery that you couldn't get any on a chip to save you life- fire whomever made that crap! Will NOT be back. Was not our first time here. Get new staff. It is hard to find good Mexican food in Denver, but we finally found it. They have the most amazing chili rellenos ever! It's not to spicy and it melts in your mouth. Plus, their margaritas were excellent. The service was great even though it was crowded. We went for lunch and the place was packed and I know why. It's absolutely one of the best Mexican restaurants in town. The atmosphere is fun and feels like you are in an old cafe. Great seating at the patio as well. This is truly a special find hidden in a not so great part of town. Thankfully my husband had been before with some clients and introduced it to me. I CRAVE the stuffed poblanos!! TOO DIE FOR! A nice fresh grilled pepper, keeping it's crisp, stuff with veggies and your choice of meat. No one in town can beat this. Service is hit or miss depending on who you get. I've had some of the best, most attentive service, down to hardly being noticed. BUT, most of the time I just want my food and drink and to be left alone to enjoy the company of my friends. So that's never been too much of bother. Fabulous price! Holy margarita! Any place that combines an appletini and a margarita immediately gets an A+ from me. But glad to say the fun didn't stop there! The boyfriend and I went out for a fun Saturday night dinner...so happy we ended up at Blue Bonnet! Started with the guacamole. Deliciously smooth with just the right amount of heat, and the perfect thing to whet out appetite. I got the chicken enchiladas (my all time favorite Mexican dish) and so glad it didn't disappoint. I'm the one to get the same dish everywhere to compare, and this just might have topped the list. My man the chef wanted to try one of the signature tacos, and chose the chipotle pork with the raspberry habanero jam. He isn't easily impressed, but this choice definitely had him smiling and licking his fingers when all was said and done. The rice and beans that accompanied both were superb as well. I don't write reviews but had to let you know! Horrible food period! Took two bites and was like omg how can you make bad shrimp tacos! All peppers BAD taste and 5 very VERY small shrimp. Took all home and dog wouldn't eat it and she will eat anything! Don't go here as Margs suck too! Blaa and no liqour!!! Server was nice and dealing with two other unhappy customers. First visit to Blue Bonnet, couldn't help but notice the magic mirrors upon walking in which mimics the DMNS Hall of Life's mirrors with a pinball machine, 90s juke box, and other Corona decor. Makes this a family fun-oriented place where one can order any Mexican platter and savor the different spicy ranged salsas to top off the heated crunchy corn chips. I will always have some love for Blue Bonnet, as it was one of the first places I went when I first moved to Denver. I love their margaritas, and on a recent trip shared a liter of Mango-Strawberry margs on the rocks with a friend. YUM....great combo, if I do say so myself. On the downside, they weren't very strong...after 2 of them we both didn't feel anything. But man were they delicious! My friend had the Tamale dinner and LOVED it. She said it was the best meal she's ever had there. I went with a combo plate that had a pork tamale, chile relleno, and beef taco. The taco was alright, but the beef was very bland. The relleno and tamale were delicious though. I wanted to add some more heat, so I asked for hot sauce. The server said they make their own hot sauces: a raspberry-chipotle sauce, and a roasted garlic, jalapeno, tomatillo sauce. I went with the tomatillo hot sauce...and holy balls, was it hot. It burned my face off....but I LOVED it, and kept putting more and more all over my food. Damn that shit was delicious! No, it's not even close to the best Mexican food in town. Seating was nice with having open doors to the patio area and the service was rapid and courteous. I'll have to admit - I'm feeling less than inclined to give any more detail as I'm WAY too full from downing too many chips and then eating my entire plate of food. I have been to this place before and remembered that it was pretty good. I decided to go back. this time, not drunk off my ass. so the food was decent. i had the shreded beef enchilada. the meat was flavorful and the sauce was good and has a lot of spice. they over did it on the cheese a bit. i know, i know, who complains about too much cheese! but this place sure isn't short on cheese. i didn't like the fact that they charged me $1 for chips and salsa. i can understand if the food was cheaper than every where else and they need people to help with the cost of chips and salsa but seriously, $1? that's like a slap in the face that we want to charge you just b/c. it's not going to hurt your wallet, and it's not going to help us much but we do it for the same reason that dogs lick their balls, b/c we can. most mexican places just give you chips and salsa for free. i wouldn't really go back on my own but if my friends drag me there, i wouldn't protest. i have other better mexican places i can go to before this one. and please, people, stop it with the unadorned criticism. Poor service sums our experience up. When we arrived the place looked busy, but we were sat pretty fast. It took a long time to get our initial drinks and then half our food orders came out incorrect.The waiter was nowhere to be found to let him know. It was as if his job was over once he took our order because I don't think he even came by our table except when we were done and he dropped the check off. My husband & I come here quite often. We usually get the breakfast burrito & one of their margaritas. We love the chips & salsa and the amazing service. This is one place to visit if you have never gone. We never had to experience a long wait or any issues with the menu or drinks. I'm so sad to see all these bad reviews. The Blue Bonnet has a warm, cheesy, Mexican place in my Colorado heart. I have so many good memories of the Bonnet and the food is always yummy and fast. The chips and salsa are great and the service (albeit "over-served") never fails. Your water glass or salsa bowl will never be half empty for long. True, the Bonnet offers simple American/Mexican fair, but I actually like it better than it's rival Benny's. It was just mediocre. I went for happy hour which looked really cheap! .....and it was not even worth what I paid. I ordered a margarita which I'm not even sure had any alcohol in it (just felt a little jittery from a sugar rush), and the apps were so tiny...ordered nachos and it was literally 5 or 6 chips laid out on a plate with a little meat and cheese on them. Gave the Bonnet a try for lunch. Interesting experience. Food was OK but bland. How about some spices guys? Doesn't have to be hot, just add some flavor. Booring. Utensils must be a premium cost these days as I was only provided a fork. I asked for a knife to help cut the chile relleno but it never appeared. Don't know if my server forgot or not allowed to?? Ended up stabbing it and just chewed on it. I'm sure the Bonnet has a thriving local crowd but I won't be joining. On another note, the dog in the dining area was interesting. The last time I was here was about four years before I was of drinking age. Now that I've had their margaritas, I will certainly be coming back! I had the habernero margarita and for someone who doesn't like tequlia or margaritas, I found this to be delightful. I liked the raspberry habernero jam and my quesdilla was good; just more of a "deconstructed" version. Late night munchie Nirvana. I found this place after bar hopping on Broadway St. in Denver on a Saturday night. It's a huge restaurant with good, inexpensive Mexican food. I find the humbleness of this place hilarious - they refill the free salsa on the table using plastic pitchers. Also the name "Blue Bonnet" is just funny to me because it's Mexican food and the name doesn't really match at all. They have awesome late night drink specials were you can get liquor drinks for only $2-$3! - the cheapest I have seen anywhere in Denver. The restaurant is really big, but the food is just ok. Nothing great, just Americanized-Mexican food. The service was really good though. The waiter noticed that my tostada shell was soggy (as I was eating it). He offered to bring me another tostada, and I said it wasn't a big deal. Then he brought me a new tostada anyways. The food definitely has gotten better over the years. But their idea of a chimichanga is totally wrong. If you aren't going to deep fry a burrito then it's a burrito! Plain and simple. Don't waste print putting a small side note saying that it;s not deep fried Move it to the burrito section. Some people may not see that since it should've been put in the title or description. So for you fellow Chimichanga lovers this is not the place to go for one. Usually when someone sees chimichanga on a menu, they are going to assume it's deep fried without reading the whole description. I liked the steak on the nachos though. Mmm. Service is great! Margarita is quite good and I like the salsa because I'm not into the spicy spicy stuff. I have been going to Blue Bonnet for decades, and the quality and atmosphere always bring me back. The chips and salsa are delicious (and unlimited for a buck), the food is great, and the atmosphere and location can't be beat. They have a great patio and outdoor seating to take advantage of Denver's wonderful weather. The margarita selection is top notch, particularly if you want a nontraditional fruit flavored drink. The good selection of Mexican beer on tap and TVs in the bar make the restaurant a great spot to stop in for a Broncos or Rockies game. The menu is also extremely vegetarian friendly. The many vegetarian options are clearly marked and quite tasty. read more
