When I first started coming here, owner Betsy Yee held command of the order desk with efficiency and charm. Always with a sparkle in her eye, she served her guests into her 80s, I think! Tonight I swung through the drive-thru for a spicy teriyaki bowl and Lyn Yee, the owner's daughter hustled my order out to me, even though there was a truck in front of me. What you'll get her is friendly service, a welcome familiarity, reliably good food and a reason to come back again and again. They use good ingredients and definitely don't skimp on serving size. A bowl always gets me two enjoyable meals! I am ashamed I haven't reviewed Blue Fin sooner! It's a legend in Central/Downtown food circles. Blue Fin is a Phoenix institution! My family and I have been coming to get our Blue Fin fix for many years. In all these years Lynn has been the friendly face we have always appreciated seeing along with some previous employees who are no longer with us(RIP Olga)! Lynn exudes so much POSITIVITY that is always welcomed. She tells my family and I we're her lucky charm who attracts customers when we visit. Maybe she tells this to all her regulars, either way we are happy to carry the torch if she truly feels we help her! The warm greeting always makes their food so much better! I am in no position to give Blue Fin a grade on its authenticity or it's level of preparing their dishes to the gold standard. I can tell you it always fulfills my palate and based on busyness, many others agree! This small Japanese shop is a small business owned mom and pop. I love the simplicity of the shop and the owner is super friendly with a cheery disposition everytime we order lunch. They close quite early, however. My go to is the oyakodon: egg and chicken on top of a bed of steamed rice. It's my guilty pleasure and reminds me of my old eats in NYC. I'm definitely in search of any Japanese restaurants that make oyakodon! Blue Fin also serves pork/chicken katsu, sushi, and curries as well. Had lunch there while we were down in Phoenix. Very small place but everyone there was super friendly. Having never been here before I asked for recommendations and she mentioned to try either chicken katsu or the fish katsu so I opted for the chicken katsu and the wife ordered the beef teriyaki plate. The place is very clean with outdoor seating. While we waited we noticed how the people working seemed to know everyone coming in they were all welcomed cheerfully. The meals arrived and the wife thought he beef teriyaki tasted differently than what we normally have so I switched with her. The teriyaki sauce was different but not bad tasting just different. The chicken was good and they provided 3 different dipping sauces for us to try. I liked them all. Portions were good size and the prices were excellent for the amount of food you got. I recommend this place but the wife not so much. I trust my taste buds more than hers. We don't usually like the same food anyway so thumbs up for me. Give the place a try when you are down that way. If you want to sit in for lunch, seating is also slim. Around dinner time it's empty and there's parking available. Service was fast during the lunch rush but very impersonal. During the slow dinner hours they're alot friendlier. Food was fairish, not great but not terrible. I've had the egg rolls, edamame, Vegetable Yakisoba Bowl (wheat noodles) with Chicken Teriyaki, the seaweed salad, and the sunomono (cucumber salad), as well as the mini mochis. Since the dawn of time, my husband has been raving to me about Blue Fin - so today I finally tried it. Okay, so he's been going there for 21 years, but he loves the place and I can see why: it's terrific. The lunch special is a great value. For $9.79 you get teriyaki chicken with rice, two mini spring rolls, a salad and a 20 oz. drink. I enjoyed all of it, except for the salad, which I found to be bitter. I could have hit it on a bad lettuce day so I won't deduct stars since the rest of my lunch was great. I only wish Blue Fin wasn't so far from my house so I could visit more often. My name is Doug and it has been nearly 2 years since my last visit to Blue Fin... so I hit it two days in a row to make up a little for lost time. (I needed to be downtown for two days this week and hit Blue Fin for lunch/early dinner on both days because.. why not??) While waiting in the drive-thru line, I realized that it has been about 20 years since my first visit to Blue Fin. I no longer work downtown, but I have made pilgrimages in the past. With the transition to a work-from-home job and the pandemic, however, it has been a while. You know how some places are better in your memory than they are in reality? Or, you SWEAR they were better "back in the day?" I am happy to say that the food here is just as good as I remember... and it was amazing back then, too.
