The first time I went to Blue Mesa for Happy Hour, no one explained to me that around the corner from where I was sitting was a complimentary quesadilla bar! And when others went to "get food for the table," I didn't realize they weren't paying for the apps, and I refrained from chowing down. So, since the happy hour drink prices weren't that great, I never had any intention of going back. That is, until some friends invited me to join them after work Friday. Some server was kind enough to explain how their happy hour worked this time around. Thank goodness, too. Because I would have otherwise continued to write this place off! I'm certainly a fan now (who doesn't love free, delicious food?). And I'll probably be the next one to suggest going here instead of the other way around. read more

Hands down, the best Happy Hour in town. I've gone here for happy hour numerous times. For ordering any single happy hour drink, you get unlimited nachos & chicken or vegetable quesadillas. They're really good too & they're made right in front of you. Make sure to tip the woman making your quesadilla! She's really sweet & always does a great job. The bar staff is really great too, especially if you end up sitting at the bar. They always have very good service & seem to instantly appear in front of you the moment you finish the last drop of your drink. Also, they're pretty well known for their "Blue Frozen" margaritas. I like it on the rocks, but it's good either smoothie-style or on ice. I've tried some of their other dinner items too & their other food is pretty good. This is a great place if you're looking to hang out with a group of friends. I always see big groups of people eating & if it's not too hot outside, you can consider dining out on their patio. I LOVE hatch chilies. I love that Blue Mesa has a hatch chili menu during August & September. I guess I'm getting old & cantankerous when we sit at the bar & my glass is empty & no one makes eye contact. If you buy a drink, you can help yourself to the Quesadilla Bar. What is a quesadilla bar?? Um, are you serious? What is the hype about? It must be the brunch. And ONLY the brunch. I got what the server suggested and it was pretty bad, my date couldn't even eat his. When she noticed we had pushed out plates to the side, oh, 5 minutes after we received our plates, she simply offered us a togo box and did not inquire about the quality of the food. Of course we had an emphatic "no." to answer her togo box question. The service was slow, drinks were slow...it was a crowded Friday night, but I was in the food/bev industry for 7 years. What a fiasco! This place is been the worse I have visited since I got into town. The server had a terrible body odor and u cannot tell me no manager or supervisor did not smell it nor addressed it. We ordered the table side guacamole and it was not the experience I was expecting. He left so quickly that if I needed more lime or would like more cilantro there was no way to get him back. I only recommend Blue Mesa for their brunch. I have tried several places for brunch and never enjoy it nearly as much as Blue Mesa's. They do it very well and is quite a hot spot for brunch. Come early/late or be prepared to wait quite a while. With bottomless mimosas and a large buffet selection, the $25 price tag is extremely reasonable. The buffet is quite impressive that includes some breakfast items along with a waffle and egg station. When it is packed, maneuvering can be quite difficult but something most just deal with. I always have a great time at brunch here and a great spot to hang out with your friends and loved ones. read more

Blue Mesa, I owe you an apology. Sort of. Since my first review of this place, I will admit I have been back 2-3 times - once for dinner, and the rest during their happy hour. Dinner admittedly was very good and a much better experience than happy hour; the drinks were much better, our staff was much more attentive, and the food was actually great! I have no bad memories of the actual dinner experience. Happy hour, however, continues to give me a headache. It's just such a good deal, so I feel bad throwing it out the window immediately, so I found myself slinking back one, two times, hoping for a better experience. I will say, since I now knew how the happy hour worked, I didn't have to deal with the host stand and their potentially annoyed reactions, so it was already off to a better start. The drinks were much better, but I can't say that they were strong at all like some people claim. Maybe I've built up a tequila tolerance? Haha. I think the absolute worst thing about Blue Mesa's happy hour is the SERVICE, or lack of it. I understand that it's always packed, so the waitstaff is busy, but since they are only serving drinks without worrying about food orders, I would think they would be more prompt. Every time I've been, the biggest struggle is tracking down our waiter to both put in an order and to close out. Frankly, its annoying. The last time I went, my friend and I had the benefit of getting the grumpiest waiter we've ever had. He didn't greet us when he finally came over to take our order; rather, he walked over and just said, "Alright, what do you want." Really? Hello to you to! I just don't know. Four stars to the second best ever Brunch place. I was going to go with the words OH MY GOD! but figured I should explain why they only get four stars. First off, they were crowded as hell but there wasn't a wait to sit in the heat. So we chose a somewhat shaded spot on their patio and our waitress was the bomb. I have been here many times for Happy Hour and once for their brunch. I love their nachos and veggie quesadillas, because the nachos are loaded with beans and cheese, and the veggie quesadillas are bursting with flavor. These are unlimited during Happy Hour and free as long as you purchase an alcoholic beverage. They also offer pork or chicken on different days, but they're kind of plain tasting. The margaritas tend to come out slow during this time, so I would order two at a time if you're trying to get your "drink on" before 7pm. Now, Sunday brunch, the cost is $18 for an okay buffet. There are many Tex-Mex dishes available such as sweet corn tamale and enchiladas, but you also have your regular American breakfast staples. The dessert area is pleasing to the eye, but once you sit down and bite into it, you find out it's not the delicacy you thought you had chosen, but rather some mediocre concoction. No hostess at the front, but we knew the drill and immediately headed to the bar to find some seats. We found two seats at the bar and sat down, waiting patiently for a bartender or server so that we could get our margaritas going. We waited. And we waited. And we waited. We watched the bartenders scurry around busily, but despite the fact that we were sitting right in front of them as they mixed drinks, we were not acknowledged. It was getting close to 6:15 and we didn't want to miss out on the quesadilla bar so we took turns getting food while waiting for service. About 15-20 minutes after we had walked in and sat down, I finally got to flag down one of the bartenders to get us some margaritas. We eventually got the drinks, but were still missing silverware... After a few failed attempts at flagging down bartenders, we got our silverware... 5-10 minutes later. We did enjoy our quesadillas, but found the service to be incredibly lacking and the chips stale... Blue Mesa is one of our favorite local haunts (especially during happy hour). Not a big fan of the new location at all and I miss the old one on University... Parking is always atrocious here and it seems as though they are understaffed for the size of the new restaurant. read more

First visit here and we took the opportunity to have happy hour. Happy Hour includes bar margaritas (plain, blue, frozen, swirls) for $5.00 and they are made by hand - they squeeze lime juice into some of them and my hubby's blue one was made in a shaker. They offer a complimentary quesadilla and nacho bar, which was very nice. They offer shredded chicken or veggie quesadillas and the chicken was moist and flavorful. We also had some chips and salsa that hit the spot. The seats at the bar itself weren't very comfy but we so enjoyed the atmosphere that we elected to eat our dinner here as well. My husband had the Adobe Pie and it was larger than it looks in the picture online (on the Blue Mesa menu page). He said it was good, but not great. I opted for 3 street tacos, one beef, chicken and pulled pork. The pork was the standout, with the meat being very tender with a hint of smokey flavor. The chicken was sliced instead of shredded, and a little dry. The beef was the same, again just so-so. The sides of ginger rice and Chamayo Market corn were bland. I expected the really good 'mexican corn' like you get at Fuel City; however, it was just regular corn with a little sour cream mixed in I think. The rice was slightly overcooked/hard and lacked flavor. I think the happy hour deal is the thing to make this place a 4-star gig. Good value, great (and quick) service and the free food! I came here for a wedding shower brunch event. We had a private room set up for us, and it was really nice and roomy inside. The waitress serving us all was very friendly, and did her job well. We had breakfast quisadilla that was quite tasty. The best part was the potatoes with onion. I couldn't get enough of that! I had high expectations for this place, but was let down. We were a pre-planned party of about 100. They didn't have enough space to accommodate all of us. We paid a flat rate of $26 and I don't think we receive that in food or service. They ran out of food for those that attended late, so some of us had to take the scraps from the "buffet/served" trays. Food was alright, but the guacamole, salsa and chips were on point. Service was awful. It took them a very long time to get our water and adult beverages. I kid you not, I saw the wait staff more when we had to pay for our beverages than the whole night. We were given our bar tab several different times. It was one receipt per drink. We would pay for one round and then the wait staff would show up for the other rounds with separate receipts, so it felt never ending. read more

We recently visited the brunch at the larger University Drive location and whoa - loved it. We knew the brunch was good but the choices here will make you eat yourself numb. I have been to Blue Mesa for brunch a few times with my family. The drill is: $20 per person, all you can eat and bottomless mimosas. The hrs are 11-3 and if you get there at any time before 2PM be ready for a LOOOOOOOOOONNNNNGGGG wait for a table. Once you made it in, they have several different "stations" with food. The first station has chips, several kinds of salsa and guacamole. You can also find salad with different dressings. There is another station of made-to-order eggs, like omelets, eggs Benedict etc. The next station is breakfast type stuff, like sausage, potatoes and already made eggs so you don't have to wait in line. Next station is lunch stuff, like enchiladas, corn cakes (delicious) rice, beans etc. The next station is "guisados" so that means stuff to make tacos out of, like picadillo, chicken tinga etc, you can also find freshly made flour tortillas here. What? Did you think that was it?? NO! There is also a waffle station (AKA my-jam). The waffle station has pecans, whipped cream, strawberry compote, ICE CREAM!! and other stuff that apparently people put on their waffles. The last but not least, the dessert station with mini flan, mini cheesecake, and other mini things. Not all of them are very good, to be honest, but the flan and churro bites are good. Ok, so after all of that long list of things, Why am I giving it only 2 stars? -The food is SUPER cold, so even if the flavors are delicious, it's kind of hard to like an enchilada that has a lump of gross cold cheese inside. -Waiters are super busy, which means you have to wait forever to get plates, the plates are not at each food station like at other places, which means that if you are lucky and the waiter sees you, you have to wait like 20 minutes for a clean plate. -Impossible to get drinks/refills, you can call your drinks bottomless all you want, but there are not so much when you can't get someone to get you one. -Mimosas? More like Ice juice with a splash of orange and maybe some champagne hiding somewhere. Seriously, WTH? -There is a fly party extravaganza! I don't think I will be going back. We arrived on Friday night and were seated rather quickly given the crowds. First of all, this is not your typical Tex-Mex menu. Blue Mesa is best described as something akin to "Southwestern fusion" instead of as a Mexican restaurant, which may account for some disappointing reviews. Fewer spicy tomato-and-cilantro based dishes and more masa, blue corn and freshly grilled items, including using a lot of seafood. Had the chile relleno and chicken enchilada combo, both of which were fantastic, accompanied by roasted corn relish and R&B. Sauce had some sort of smokey element, which complimented the dish well. Also famous for their fresh southwestern salsa and their sweet potato chips, free on every table. The bar is a favorite and trendy place for happy hour, and has quite a good selection of tequilas. My son and his partners decided this year to hold their 5th year dinner anniversary for MAB here. This was my first visit to a Blue Mesa Grill. The set-up for the event was well arranged along with the buffet of food. Service was very attentive but lacked smiles and friendliness attitudes except for the sweet lady bartender (3 stars***) that seem to have a deep passion for anyone in her favorite color, turquoise (she admired my turquoise top). The entrees of choice was shrimp bacon rolls, were a bit salty, the rice and bean rolled tortilla thing was good along with that flour one (sorry, I don't remember what it was called). Chips mixed with black, plain tortillas and thick cut sweet potato ones were a little bland and the salsa wasn't good......but I will say my frozen blue margarita chased the nastiness away fast. With a few mingles and hugs Poppie and I decided to make a dash over to Pappadeaux to wine and dine on some entrees of our likings. The happy hour at blue mesa is awesome. They have a Taco bar buffet. on Tuesday if u get there before 630pm and buy an alcoholic drink. They also give you sweet potato chips for free. Definitely get here early as the good deals gets this place crowded. I would recommend finding a seat outside (weather permitting) It can get a bit loud and stuff inside. We had a great dining experience at Blue Mesa Grill last night. For starters, the chips and salsa was amazingly fresh. They gave us two different salsas: one was a smoky version, while the other was not. The tortilla chips were properly seasoned, but the star was the sweet potato chips. My husband and I ordered Bloody Mary's from the bar, and they were among the best we have consumed. However, the main course entrees were phenomenal. I ordered the street tacos (shrimp, avocado and goat cheese, and BBQ Pulled Pork) which were properly seasoned. My husband ordered JB's Platter, which included some of their better meat dishes.
