Blue Moon Diner - The waffles! - American Near Me - Beaverton, Oregon

This would be my first time; however, I go by it almost every week. I never saw many people there and that usually doesn't bode well. This diner has ol'American food; sandwiches, burgers, salads, chicken strips and breakfast. I cannot give much detail into breakfast since my grandmother and I got lunch. My meal: Fish and chips with a role and with an oreo shake. I received a side of coleslaw, lemon and butter for the role. I had to ask for tartar sauce. I am not sure if they had vinegar for the fish or not. I didn't ask nor do I eat fish and chips with it but it wasn't brought to the table. My grandmothers meal: Rueben sandwich and fries and a diet coke. The fries were either overcooked or the oil was not clean. They were a very very dark brown but not totally burnt. That was both my grandmothers and myself. But they were actual potato fries, not frozen. That being said they were not seasoned in the least; which is fine for me I love the natural potato flavor. However, like I said they were overcooked a bit. My fish was also over-cooked a bit but it still tasted really good. The role however looked like it had been put into a microwave and heated with a small saucer of water. It was wrinkled and didn't seem fresh. I didn't eat it so I don't know how well it tastes. (Not from the appearance, I ate my fries and chips first and got full; The serving size is a good portion). I don't like coleslaw so I cannot give a sufficient review. The shake was perfect. My grandmother seemed to really enjoy the Reuben sandwich and ate most of it; however, she agreed with me that the fries were overcooked. Service: The waitress was friendly for the most part; she greeted when we walked in with a smile and hello, we seated ourselves. It wasn't that busy. She came within three minutes of us seated to get our drinks. We received everything within a timely manner. Her service would be a three. She did not give us thorough information on the dish or ask any questions but wrote everything down. For example if I were to ask for the fish and chips she would have mentioned it came with coleslaw as well and a role. She did not; When my grandmother ordered the Reuben the waitress did not ask what she wanted as a side my grandmother had to ask questions as to what we could get or have with our meals and what came with them. Which should be information a waitress should give as we order. Once that was done and we received our food we had to flag her down if we needed anything, she did not come and ask us if we were okay or how our food was. She seemed like the only one there and there were two other tables so she might have been busy or doing something such as stocking. I didn't see any other staff except maybe main managers and one kitchen staff. The food and shake with drink cost around $30.00. The lunch to be honest, I don't think was worth the price nor the service. WIth $30.00 dollars for two we could have gone to Red Robin for better quality given in both. But like I said, that was lunch. The breakfast might be excellent, I have yet to try it or my grandmother and I just received the short straw with server and cook combo. Again it was my first time, but I wasn't that impressed and I am reluctant to go back and spend $30.00 dollars on sub par food and service if it were to happen again. read more

I just stopped in for lunch. It's a cute little diner. The server, which turns out to also be the owner is super nice. They had a nice little lunch pop. I like that they serve breakfast all day, but i do have to say they have some of the best burgers in town!!!! I highly recommend one. read more

It was 10:55 am Monday morning when I walked thru the door of the diner and was greeted by the waitress, who met me at the door with the query, "Would I like coffee,?", to which I quickly answered, "Yes, two cups of decaf.". I then sat down and selected my choice from the menu. and waited for the waitress. All this happened BEFORE 11:00 am! The waitress then went behind the counter and played with her smart phone for more than 10 minutes while I waited for my, and my wife''s, coffee. Only then did the waitress put down her smart phone and take our orders. Now comes the nitty-gritty": We showed the waitress a breakfast coupon for $3 off before 11:00 am which she now said was no good because it was now AFTER 11:00 and she would not honor the coupon!. She admitted that if she had entered the coffee when it was first ordered she could have given us the $3 off .....but,oh well.....Also, I agree with the one reviewer who suspected the pancakes went from the freezer to the microwave....tasteless! read more

I had just typed into Google 'breakfast places near me', this came up and we decided to give it a try. So glad we did! This place is so adorable. The second you walk in, you're instantly brought to the 1950's. The music, the decor, even the old school coke glasses with a bendy straw. Great diner menu, complete with full list of hand dipped milkshakes and malts. Couldn't help but leave this place in a good mood. We will definitely be back. read more

Just took the whole family and my 93 year old grandma loved it. Thai iced tea is a must, or if you're feeling more traditional, their shakes and malts are delicious. Wow! I just had their Thai burger and it was one of the most tasty, interesting burgers I've had in a long time. They also have lots of unique things like avocado ice cream, malts, and bread pudding. Great diner atmosphere and good service. This is my new go-to diner! Brough my dad here while he was visiting a few weeks ago. This place was great! An odd location and maybe not what you would expect, but it was a win! Husband had the Blue Moon Burger. It was delicious! I had the Monte Cristo, dad had the Reuben. Everything was carefully made and delicious! Restaurant was clean, service was A+! My boyfriend and I found this place close to my house for brunch. It is pretty good. We have been back several times. Not a fan of the orange juice but everything else we've had is good. Was a little hesitant about trying the place, based on the mixed reviews, but I had a coupon from Amazon Deals so I thought I'd try it out. Overall, the experience was good. I was expecting a mix of 50's and Thai decor, but the owners must have taken the advice of prior reviewers and nixed the Thai theme. It feels like a 50s diner inside. Fats Domino music played in the background. We were there this past Friday night, and over half the booths were filled. The service is really nice. Both waitresses were friendly and attentive. I asked for her recommendation and she said the pork chops were good, so I tried them, with eggs and hashbrowns. The marinade on the chops wasn't to my liking (sour tasting) but the meat was cooked fine and the hashbrowns were lovely. Nice and fluffy and crisp, without any greasy texture. My companions ordered from the separate Thai menu (which you have to ask for) and got Pad Thai and a yellow curry. Both were very good, although some fresh greens or carrots on the top of the Pad Thai was our only recommendation for improvement. The taste was great. The Thai coffee in the Coca Cola glass was super too. Ordered fried ice cream for desert, and we expected a lighter batter (perhaps because of the Asian influence, perhaps a tempura style) but it was thick and heavy. Tasted fine, but texture-wise not the best. The place is really, really, clean, and again, the atmosphere is comfortable and pleasant. We will try it again one of these days. read more

Food was terrible! They need to fire the cook, simple as that. If a diner cannot execute a couple burgers I'd hate to see other menu items. Just because the burger is 6 inches thick, it doesn't make it any better quality. My plate was swimming in juice from wet veggies, mayo oozing everywhere. Pretty much inedible. Today, 10/9/2016, at 5pm we went in to have dinner/breakfast. A waitress that had just got off work had her dirty, huge make up brush and a huge bag of make up laying on the front bar where customers sit to eat. A tray of clean silverware was sitting right by the bag. A big!! dirty!! make up brush!! laying next to the clean silverware?? sitting there putting makeup on.!! A ton of what looked like ten years worth of old makeup laying all over the counter. I was blown away. How gross!! I don't think that lady has a food handlers card. After seeing that, then the waitress had fineally got us 2 ice waters and a coke. She let us know she "would be back in awhile to get our order" then proceeded to go and take orders from people that came in and sat down long after we had. We had been there for about 10- 15 minutes by then. So after that and watching the waitress put makeup on, on top of the clean silverware. We left, We won't be back.. read more

My husband and I went to the Blue Moon Diner today. We recently moved to Hillsboro and we are still checking out new spots to eat particularly for breakfast. We had driven by this place a couple of times and finally decided to check it out. We had heard it had been turned into a Thai restaurant so we weren't sure if they also served breakfast. It turns out it reopened within the last 5 months under new owners. The digital sign outside quickly let us know breakfast was being served. I'm a total sucker for the old fifties decor and was eager to try it out. I had the eggs Benedict with hashbrowns and he has the bacon cheese omelet. Both were really good. I am pretty picky about my hollandaise sauce and they did a great sauce, more seasoned then tangy but still really good. The hashbrows were nice and crispy. Great basic breakfast. They have some breakfast specials that we missed on the specials board so we will have to check those out next time. We had a chance to chat with the owner and she was really nice. The atmosphere was particularly nice because we had the morning sun keeping us warm, which as you know in Oregon is always a treat. I am excited to see what the rest of their menu is like. I believe I've been back here just about once (sometimes twice) a week since my first visit 7/2017. I try to get something different every time I visit though I've had to revisit a few menu items just because they're THAT GOOD (I'm thinking of you patty melt on sourdough w/ onion rings and also the biscuits & gravy!). I've brought my mother on several trips, my husband for many, and my bestie for one. Everyone loves this place. Food is consistently good and everyone leaves happy. It can get busy weekend mornings but go in the afternoon and you'll have attentive staff and your food quick. My husband can't brag enough about the homemade cobblers. I've asked and the owner says she makes them from scratch - she says she tries to do as much as she can from scratch. Oh and the Thai coffee is to die for! Get that!!! read more

This was the worst food ever. We were the only people in the place except for two others. The owner lady was very kind, though the food was atrocious. The fries had some sort of breading on them and everything was super bland. We ordered a grilled cheese and burger, with fries and a salad. The menu is huge, and if you know anything about having a huge menu, with Thai food and American food, is that you are usually not an expert at both...which is too True!! The service was fine and again the owner was nice, though I would never eat here again. We left with a good sized bill for the less than mediocre food. read more

Fantastic, fantastic, fantastic. As a retired Culinary Arts Teacher Certified Exec Chef with almost forty years teaching the restaurant business and now a private Food Production and Management Services Consultant operating the Portland Area, I cannot say enough about this amazing eating establishment. The owner Kuong Jae (please forgive the spelling if I am incorrect), our server Rhonda and the unbelievable cleanliness of the diner are mind blowing. The food is fantastic (thank you chef and I'm sorry I didn't get your name this time, but rest assured I will know it by our next visit and the many more times you will see us in the future). The Blue Moon is our new "go to" place. The prices are more than reasonable, the portions more than ample, and the 1940s/1950s decor along with the rock and roll music subtly played over a speaker system made this old man have many memories of my youth. I cannot recommend this place highly enough. Ask for Rhonda as she is a gem. My only concern is after writing this, too many people will make it difficult for us to get seated because they will be standing in line to get seated....that's how good it is. My wife ordered banana pancakes thinkng they were average five to six inch pancakes. She ordered three...the banana were mixed in and not just dumped on top. Each of the pancakes was the size of the platter...(she brought one and a half home), My grandson had a huge waffle with two sausage patties...not a a crumb left. I had chicken fried steak, hash browns, and two eggs over easy (perfect eggs.great sausage gravy and the hash browns crispy and golden brown...couldn't finish the sour dough toast that came with it. And last....the best cup of coffee I have had min more than fifty years....Rhonda told us it was "ILLY".....I have to find some for home. I hope you all enjoy as much as we have.... read more

We took Grammy in, as it used to be a favorite place of her and Grandpa's. Yicks!!! I would never go back. The service was horrible. We could only see 2 other tables with people at them and it took 20 min for our server to come take our order. My husband got a milkshake and we had to ask for clean silverware, every spoon on the table was dirty. Adding insult to injury, they got all 4 of our orders wrong and when they finally got the orders correct the food was so bad that we did not eat most of it. When the server asked how the food was I told her I could not eat it and she just smiled and walked away. We were told later that it is under new management. So, having tired of the whining on evening cable political news, I ventured out a few blocks to Blue Moon Diner to try the Thai. Not only were there no Thai staff people, there were no other people in the place at 8 pm but I persevered and ordered a Panang curry, which was fine though skimpy (except for the long hair in the first forkfull). So cute. So cute. Old fashioned in every way, from the decor to the menu and music. Food as good- carious fried items (fries, hashbrowns, onion rings etc) were crispy and light. Omelettes were good and nicely portioned. The pancakes were quite the disappointment, but considering how lovely everything else was, that's minor. The server was a nice and patient woman; I say patient because our group asked questions (we'd never been here before) and she didn't seem annoyed at all. Decided to try this place as it's right down the street from my office. Met my wife there and ordered mozzarella sticks and we each got the patty melt. The food was ok, nothing special. The reason for the 1 star review is halfway through our meal my wife finds a short black hair swimming in the grease dripping out of the sandwich. I keep my calm and motion for the lady that helped us. I showed her the hair and asked for the check. She didn't apologize or anything. Just brought the bill and mumbled that she had discounted it. We are two months new to the area and decided to take a drive and as we were driving through Aloha OR I spotted the diner tucked back off the hwy in its cozy corner of the shopping center. From the outside it was bright, shinny and welcoming, and upon entering it was no different. We were greeted by a young girl waitress and a very friendly lady that turned out to be the owner. The atmosphere is right out of "Happy Days" and we loved it. 50's music in the background. Nostalgic photos on the wall. It was great. My wife ordered a hamburger, with fries and a chocolate malt and I ordered a patty melt, fries and a chocolate malt also. The food was great and the malts are made the old fashion way and you get the steal mixing can too with the extra. We had a wonderful conversation with the owner. She shared about its history and the local activities she has at the diner. We give it 5 stars and plan on returning at least monthly, maybe more, but it is on our list of favorite places to eat and reminisce. read more
