Worst Japanese food I have ever had....service was great but we just did not enjoy the meal. If you want just plain fried seafood, you are probably ok coming here. If you want really good Japanese food, there are so many other restaurants in Richmond to go. I was so disappointed. Don't expect a "bowl" if you order an ahi tuna bowl or anything labeled "bowl." Have only experienced takeout. Cannot imagine how dining in would be. First time, we were in the area & walked in, ordered takeout. Wanted to try the sushi but they said it would be 40-45 minutes. Not sure why.....there was NO ONE in the restaurant. We decided against it as we had our small children with us & were looking for something fairly quick. A few days later, decided to give it another try. Again, wanting to try the sushi. When we called our order in, they told us 45 minutes. Once we arrived, they said an additional 15 minutes. Was REALLY hoping the food would be worth the wait, but it was just mediocre. The ingredients seemed to be fresh, but the dishes lacked flavor. Nothing exciting & definitely not worth the wait. How is half of the menu sushi, but takes an hour to prepare? I can't imagine if they had more than one order on deck. The poor person who was 2nd surely would have to wait at least 2 hours for their food. Hire more help! read more

What a hidden gem!! My mom came to town and we needed a quick casual lunch and we found this nearby. We sat on a beautifully shaded deck and had a lite & very reasonably-priced sushi meal (but their menu offers a wide array of non-Japanese fare, as well). I'M AMAZED !!!!..... We just discovered this unassuming gem 2 weeks ago and we've had dinner there 4 times. The sushi is the best in the city - and could be the best I've ever had- get the Mars roll, it is my favorite. I was scared I'd be disappointed by anything else.... and then I had the RAMEN! My last trip was with a group of friends and we all got apps - the shrimp spring rolls are new and fantastic. THEN I GOT THE BURGER.... it has a crab cake and some kind of magic sauce that you'll dream about for years to come. read more

This restaurant was a wonderful find. The food is fresh authentic Japanese fusion, artistically presented, and perfectly prepared. The appetizer with fried and battered shrimp, wrapped beautifully with shredded potato was both gorgeous and crispy, not oily, and with a sweet savory dipping sauce. This appetizer is a must order, truly exceptional. For my entree I had the Spicy tuna rice bowl which came arranged in a lovely manner with avocado, lightly seared rare tuna, shredded carrots on a bed of rice with a mango spicy salsa. We have found our new regular dining facility! Since Soya closed down about a year ago, my wife and I have been searching for a more traditional Japanese style restaurant. We stumbled across this little diner that smelled like a traditional Japanese restaurant. They had the best shrimp we have ever eaten. Steak so perfectly cooked, it melted in our mouths. Our oldest son does not like steak, but he couldn't get enough of his mother's steak. The sushi was artfully prepared and fresh! Even my son's popcorn shrimp was to die for!!! The deserts were phenomenal, green tea cheesecake and green tea mochi ice cream. I can't wait to go back and try EVERYTHING on the menu. The owners and staff were very pleasant and welcoming. I heard this place was pretty awesome. Unfortunately, I cannot agree. I was craving a po boy one day after the beach and my wife wanted some fish and chips. She made out a little better than me, but $40 almost for two meals to go in foam clam shell containers was a tough purchase. Maybe I'll revisit when we can sit and dine in the small space provided, but going to be awhile before my confidence in Bluefish Grill is back up. Should have eaten seafood at the beach and tried something else in Midlothian, va. I always give places the benefit of the doubt being in the industry for over 20 years, I get it. Just did not scream value or experience. 2 butterflied, lightly fried shrimp in a 6 oz hoagie with slaw and a splash of aioli. Could have done the same great flavors with a different approach to show more volume in the po boy. Maybe smaller shrimp that looks like more. Went for lunch 3/26/19 with a friend and we both ordered the crab cake sandwich after asking the waitress if it was mostly filler or mostly crab. We even asked if it was lump crabmeat and she assured us it was lump and very little filler. It was not lump and it was mostly filler. It didn't even taste like crab because of how much filler was in it. It was the first time in my life I have been unable to finish a crab cake because it wasn't worth finishing. Not sure if it was just a bad day but doubt if we will return to find out. read more

Honestly after reading so many great reviews I was ready to be disappointed - but not at all, this was a great little restaurant. Very small, maybe only 7 tables and some of those are 2-top. We had a lunch here for 10 of us so we almost maxed out the service, trying to get all the orders done pretty much at the same time. Then additionally it was a birthday celebration and they made just a gorgeous dessert presentation with fruit slices, ice cream and a brownie; we also asked for separate checks too, and they accommodated all that, so great! I started with hot green tea, served in a cute oriental ceramic tea pot with 2 bags already steeping. So appreciate a real tea pot! For lunch I had the Explosion sandwich, and chose a house salad with ginger sesame dressing for my side. The salad was very fresh and - oh yes - what looked like house made croutons. Not too hard, not too soft but just right. Not those little crunchy chucks you get most places that explode when you try to put a fork in them. The dressing was perfect, sweet/sour and served on the side. The sandwich had spicy slaw, spicy aioli and oh so tender sliced pork belly, just awesome and a great mix of flavors. I could only eat half, the rest came home. The cooking area is right there in the dining room, looked like a staff of 3 working and that's about all you could fit back there. Everything is just spick and span shiny. When there was a tiny problem with an order (a $1 upcharge for soup that the server didn't tell my friend about and honestly I don't think my friend even noticed) the owner came by and apologized and took the dollar off. Outstanding service and owner presence. They do have a small porch in front that could be used for dining in better weather. Look for this little spot - not easy to find - but completely worth it. read more

It is so nice to have an option for dining in Midlothian. Tucked in an unassuming strip mall, the Bluefish Grill is a wonderful find. The servers are extremely nice, attentive and helpful. The food is tasty and beautifully prepared. The restaurant is tiny (about 20 seats) so you can see the kitchen and I enjoyed watching the care and attention to detail as the chefs prepared each meal. Each plate that comes out is a masterpiece. While there is a clear Asian influence, there are also chicken and burger choices. The menu is several pages long and consists of salad, sandwiches, entrees and sushi. While there were not a lot of vegetarian options, there are plenty of meat and seafood choices. There is a tiny deck that allows one or two parties the opportunity to sit outside. The place fills up quickly on a Friday and Saturday night so you might want to try Bluefish out on a weeknight. I usually get ramen when I come and it's amazing. It's a generous portion and great flavor. Sometimes I get a sandwich and the bread they use is so soft and chewy inside with the perfect crust. Favorites are the soft shell crab and the explosion sandwiches. There are many menu items I still haven't tried but I'm excited to go back and keep discovering more great food! read more

The Bluefish Grill & Deli can be easy to miss, but once you eat there you'll never forget about its location or the delicious food that your pallet experienced. We had the Shrimp Tempura that was cooked just right and had been rolled in crispy panko bread crumbs served with a delicious sauce. I also ate the Curry Mabo Ramen. This is actually my second visit here. I'm a big Ramen fanatic and Bluefish Grill hit the spot both times! I had the Mabou Ramen and it was dressed in a very rich broth decorated with sweet flavors. This particular Ramen is also spicy, together with S&B spicy seasoning it ignited a fire in my stomach. After devouring the noodles and meats it was very difficult putting the ramen spoon down. I think I left marks on the bowl from the many times I tried scraping the bottom for that last bite. The owners give off positive vibes and the entire atmosphere will bring your day to ease. I've also noticed many families here and they seem to really enjoy bringing their kids here. I never thought I'd see a 6 yr old enjoy sushi! I will I definitely be coming back for more! read more

Hidden mom and pop (and son) gem in Midlo. Everything we've had here has been fantastic. Even simple things like the seaweed salad or beef rice bowl show an attention to detail and freshness you just don't get elsewhere. The miso ramen was the best ramen I've ever had in my life and the fried fish sandwich is ridiculously good. Super friendly service. My only complaint is that they're getting busier because other people have realized they exist! They deserve it though and I hope they stay open for many years to come. read more

Great little secret spot for yummy Asian food. Try it all on the menu! Bowls of ramen are filling and flavorful. Crab cake sandwich is a must order. As a rule, I don't usually order crab cakes outside of Maryland so it's a big deal that I found a place that serves up a proper crab cake. Sushi is fresh and rolled well. The owners are friendly and will remember you after your first visit! Prepare for a wait if you come on the weekend for lunch. It's a small venue.
