Doctors at Blue Pearl recommended euthanasia for our large 3 year old family dog with liver failure. She was otherwise acting completely normal, her only symptoms were jaundice and orange urine. Even when they were about to put her to sleep she was eating, drinking, jumping up and down with a ton of energy, playing with her ball, etc. The Blue Pearl doctor told us she is beyond the possibility of recovery, and we are simply "prolonging the inevitable." Against recommendations, we took her home that day. It has now been three weeks, and according to her bloodwork, she is nearly FULLY RECOVERED. Our primary care vet says she will likely not have any damage to her liver. To think that Blue Pearl wanted to euthanize her is utterly horrific. As a teenager, this whole experience has been extremely traumatizing for me and my siblings. The lack of compassion and understanding the vet showed was shocking. I would strongly discourage anyone from visiting them. read more

I was supremely disappointed by how I was treated at Blue Pearl last week during a late-night emergency visit. My cat was having urinary problems and I was afraid he had a blockage, so I rushed him in at 2am. It was absolutely freezing outside, and when I rang the buzzer, nobody answered the intercom until my third buzz, and when I was buzzed in, there was nobody at the front desk to greet me for about 5 minutes. In an emergency situation, with a cat in extreme discomfort, my experience started off on a really bad foot by having to wait in the cold and then wait some more before even being acknowledged. This was just the beginning.... I was really freaked out and didn't know what was wrong with my cat and was already in tears upon my arrival. Rather than being treated gently and with compassion, the man who showed us to our room and took my cat's weight, etc, was SO gruff and oblivious and just unpleasant in general. He was an older Russian man. He was asking me if I was Russian because of my name, asked if I spoke Russian, attempted to educate me on the meaning of my name, BEFORE even asking my CAT'S NAME. When he did finally open my cat's carrier, my cat hissed and he said to me "Oh, your cat isn't very friendly" and I said, "No, my cat is very friendly, but he is scared and in pain." The man reaches into the carrier again anyways, and my cat growled and hissed and the man says, "No, your cat is very aggressive. Get him out for me." So, I took him out of the carrier, and I could feel that he was in pain by the way his muscles were stressing. I asked the man to please be gentle and could I hold him while he did what he needed to do. The man grabbed my cat by the scruff of his neck to put him on the scale, and I again started crying. He showed absolutely no compassion for me or my cat. I was sick to my stomach and wanted to leave immediately. The veterinarian that saw us was very very friendly and kind, but by then I was already completely distressed and horrified by the service. Furthermore, they sedated my cat when I asked them not to, because he was scratching and growling. Maybe they don't know this, but when an animal is in pain, they aren't exactly docile. I practically grew up in a veterinary clinic and even I know that they could have used gloves and towels to swaddle my cat rather than sedating him. My cat did not end up having a blockage, thank goodness, because I was told it would be 2,000 dollars with NO payment plan. I took my cat and left as quickly as possible (which was still a good 3 hours after I brought him in). The next day I brought him to a regular vet and had a much better experience - NO SEDATIVES! I will never return to blue pearl and do not recommend this facility for emergency care. read more

THIS PLACE IS DISGUSTING! I could go on and on but the jist of it is they like your money way better than they like your pet. I have pet insurance and I can afford vet care and I still would tell everyone to go to another place in an emergency. The doctors aren't that smart and when in a vulnerable state they become fast-talking salespeople trying to sell you procedures that cost thousands of dollars even though they know your pet will die anyway. To add insult to injury, I paid $450 for cremation and got back not only ashes but a "fancy" crappy urn and a paw print, WHAT?? I never asked for all of that. I bought my own urn. So again when in a vulnerable state they took advantage of my credit card. No other place includes that crap along with your pet's ashes. They do it so they can jack up the price from about $150 to $450 The owner of this place lives in Florida, figures! read more

Terrible place. Only reception is humane. If you can wait and go to your vet. Do that. My Dog turned out to have kidney infection and they wanted to hospitalize her. She is 13 years old and I wanted to try home care with medication. They refused to give me the full treatment just because I didn't want to leave her there. Have to go back to my vet to do blood work again. And get treatment. Plus she was dehydrated and they didn't want to give IV in the 3 hours I was there. But wanted to charge me for the IV needle as soon as I got there. Had to beg them to give her a shot. Point is.... These people just want you to leave your pet there and sign a whole bunch of stuff. Crooks not doctors. Paid 700 dollars tonight. Just to go back to my vet tomorrow. Stay away from this place. read more

A few years ago, we brought in our Shi Tzu to be treated for a recurrent infection on one of his front paws. Jill Abraham, VMD recommended amputating our pet's paw. We decided not to allow the procedure and never went back. Although the problem still flares up occasionally, our dog can walk, jump and run perfectly more than 85% of the time. Referred by our vet..very,very expensive-they all are. Many tests and retests. I finally complained about what they were doing and the necessity of all these tests and they did cut down. My little cat was ok for a few weeks, but died after all that. He was not a young cat, but we loved him and it's sad. I would still recommend them. I brought my beloved cat to them on a Sunday afternoon after he had a seizure and I thought it was probably prudent to have him euthanized. They used emotional blackmail to convince me and my young child to allow them to keep him overnight for observation. I signed a DNR and insisted in writing on no painful or expensive tests. The next day when I visited my cat it was obvious that he needed to be put to sleep but they refused. The following day he was sent home and I was charged nearly $$3000 for his care. When I objected to some items on the bill they said "oops, we didn't actually do those tests." My beloved cat suffered for a couple more weeks at home then had a massive seizure in front of my child and died. I wrote an e-mail to the founder and received no response. I then sent a registered letter and received no response. The founder was nice enough to connect to me on LinkedIn but when I sent him a nice, not crazy message asking him to merely read my e-mail about my experience he un-friended me. Again, no response. I was ripped off, my young child was traumatized and my animal was made to needlessly suffer in the name of higher profits. Shameful behavior. read more

If you need a specialist and have a choice between Blue Pearl and the Animal Medical Center, I'd highly suggest the AMC instead. The AMC is a little less expensive (e.g., AMC ultrasound = $450 vs BP ultrasound = $550), and they are always on top of their game. I only tried BP a few times because I live on West End and it was just easier to get to. Both times I took my dog to Blue Pearl were less than satisfactory. When I called to talk to my dog's kidney specialist, I asked if I should wait for him to get her file before asking questions, but he lied and said he knew my animal... then proceeded to tell me about kidney issues with cats :-/ I don't expect doctors at big hospitals to remember every animal, but I can't imagine why he would bother lying. Just weird behavior. He also filled out the insurance claim wrong and said my dog was treated for her kidney failure 4 years before, which initially led to a denial of the claim. Where he got that from I have no idea, also really weird. I had him send in a statement that he made an error and the insurance company reassessed the claim. It's possible that my experience with Dr. Eatroff is an anomaly, but we visited another time because of her ckd and I wasn't really impressed by the other doctor either. read more

I have been a pet owner for three decades and have NEVER in all my years dealt with a more dishonest practice. Please heed the warnings of other reviewers and, if you are at all able, choose another emergency vet. If this is too long to read, then know only this, make sure you either record anything you are told or write it down and have it signed with witnesses present for your own self-protection. I wish I could say I were being hyperbolic. Years ago my small chihuahua mix broke her front leg due to a fall. The break was repaired with surgery to insert a metal plate to stabilize the bone. A few years later the plate had to be removed as it had started to irritate the surrounding skin and cause repeated infections. Both of these surgeries were done successfully at another emergency vet on Long Island where we were living at the time. Unfortunately, two weeks ago the dog jumped off a small child's chair, it was less than a foot off the ground but it was enough to cause the leg to break again in the same place. My husband's uncle had died suddenly the day before and we were grieving and preparing to host family the next day after the funeral so we didn't really have the time or mental energy to research alternatives so when our regular vet recommended this location to treat the dog's leg we rushed right over without a second thought. I have no complaints about the service received. The leg was repaired and the dog seems to be recovering well. However, as others have mentioned, their billing and business practices leave much to be desired and I would argue go as far as fraud. Since surgery, our dog has been staying with my mother who can provide more attentive care while she recovers than we are able to right now as we have a two year old toddler running around and I'm 18.5 weeks pregnant. However my mother lives in Suffolk County on Long Island, an hour and a half drive in decent traffic from our apartment on the UWS. I mention all this only to make it clear that I would under no circumstances have driven while pregnant with a toddler to Suffolk County in rush hour traffic to pick up the dog and bring her back to this vet for her weekly bandage change but for the fact that we received assurances from the surgeon when we picked up the dog after surgery that all bandage changes would be free of charge and we would not need to make an appointment if we returned there. Having spent $7,000 on the surgery and an additional $200 for an emergency bandage change at a vet on Long Island when the bandage that Blue Pearl had placed actually fell off a few days after surgery I felt this was a worthwhile inconvenience. But today not only was I told that I, in fact, do need an appointment and was almost charged almost $200 for that bit of misinformation but I was charged an additional $80+ for the bandage change. I was humiliated and made to feel like a liar in a waiting room full of people while the dog tried to wriggle out of my arms. Having gone through this surgery process three times now, and after reviewing our records, I realize I have never been charged for a bandage change previously. Thus, I'm of course disappointed that this location would charge at all but I would NEVER have argued with the practice if we had not been blatantly lied to. The best they could offer me was a blanket, "I know it's frustrating when you have received wrong information that is then not honored". No, actually, it's not frustrating, what it is is fraudulent. Again, I urge anyone to please seek out another option for your pets. I wish we had done the same when we had the chance! read more

It's like shopping at Berdorf's or Saks - if you have to look at the price, you can't afford it. My cat, a sweet Maine Coon tabby, got wonderful care here. Basically an he was an elderly cat who was a rescue, with dangerously low red blood count so he was anemic, with low blood pressure, irregular heartbeat, lethargic due to too many years on the street after being abandoned. I am lucky to have ready access to money to pay for things, since I own rental property in NYC and I am lucky enough to be considered wealthy. Trust me, I worked hard and planned hard for my wealth and it took 20 years to get where I am. They saved my beautiful cat, who will be able to live out his final years knowing it's not the cruel world that he had before. He's sitting right by me and purring on the pillow, his belly full of great food and he looks content. Bluepearl was great and caring. But make NO MISTAKE, this is not the place for anyone who is considered about what something will cost. It is a high end, state of the art place, and tests, fees, procedures, analysis, consultations, xrays, transfusions, injections, medicines, interventions, surgeries and aftercare can EASILY RUN INTO THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS IN AN EXTREMELY SHORT TIME. And if you cannot afford that and you don't allow them to do all the needed work, to make your pet better, you cannot blame them. Hospitals are hospitals, whether it is a 4 legged or 2 legged Earth dweller. It is extremely expensive and you could easily spend $5,000 in a heartbeat for an ill pet. read more

I unfortunately had a very negative experience here. For those of you with pets admitted here, please read. I hope my bad experience can be of help to you. Be VERY wary of the surgery-trigger happy doctors here. If it is a case of dire emergency and time is of the essence and surgery is the only option, then the decision is easy to make. If it is a case of finding other options and methods of healing, take down all the information and do some research yourself. You would be amazed to find that changing their diet to all natural, homemade food and adding supplements would drastically change their well being.o An animal's health is directly connected to their nutrition. Processed commercial dog food is the same as us eating McDonalds. Even if it claims to use organic ingredients, it is still processed the same way. A french fry made with organic potatoes is as unhealthy as ones made with conventional potatoes; its the process that makes it unhealthy. If you are feeding your pet something out of a box or can, please look into homemade food. Think of what would happen to your health if you ate Spam and Wonder Bread every day of your life. The doctors here get paid per surgery and I've experienced in many visits that they try to pressure you to commit to surgery even though there are other options. If I had known this info, I would've gone about things much differently with my 10yr old min pin. To make a long story short, my dog had to have his spleen removed (something I wish I had more time to think about, but at the time, immediate surgery was presented to me as the only option available.) He staff was very friendly and reassuring. Dr. Kyles was also very friendly before and immediately after the surgery. My dog had to spend the night there, but we were able to visit him during the middle of the night and called to check up on him every couple of hours. When we went to pick him up the next day, I was told he had 10 staples on his belly that had to stay there for a week. The recovery and healing process at home was pretty brutal, but we all got through it. We brought him back a week later and we were greeted with 3-4 vet techs. They brought him into a back room and told me they would remove his staples and bring him back. Several minutes later, they all come out and told me his scar is healing well and that he should be problem free. I asked if Dr. Kyles himself checked the scar, and they assured me he did, but that he had to run to his next surgery and couldn't greet me. Ok, fine. We took our dog and went home. As soon as we reached our apartment, I put him on his comfy bed but I felt something on his belly. I flipped him over to take a closer look, and I see that 4 out of the 10 metal staples were still in there. I take him back there and demanded an explanation. All 3-4 vet techs AND Dr.Kyles himself couldn't see that all the staples weren't removed?? Who is running this clown show? The best explanation they were to offer me was , "Oh, we thought we got all of them". "ALL 5 OF YOU THOUGHT THAT??" Obviously they are very careless here. Most of the reviews here rave about how nice they are here. Well, nice is nice but I'd much rather you do your jobs properly than suck up to me. I paid $20,000 for you to fix my dog, not for you to be my friend. My dog is healthy now thankfully, but I will never forget how unprofessional and careless this hospital was. Even after complaining to the staff about this ordeal, I did not even get a courtesy call from Dr. Kyles. It goes to show he is only concerned about the actual surgery itself, getting paid and nothing else. Don't get fooled by their niceness. read more

This is the worst facility I have ever been to and I have had pets and have volunteered at many facilities. My rushed my cat to this "emergency vet" thinking they would provide her help. She couldn't walk & was breathing very heavily and quickly. A dr. Kamen told me her potassium levels were so high her heart could stop. He told me that a catheter would have to be put in place and an iv would be needed. But before he would do anything for her he wanted me to pay an estimate of close too $4k. I didn't have $4k, the dr flat out told me since I don't have the money on the spot to just put my baby to sleep. very cold, dry, no compassion; I was crying heavily! He constantly sent in vet technicians with different estimates. He finally came down to $690. He put in the catheter and handed me blood work and pain meds. This was at 2am on the 30th. I ended up sleeping in front of the human society to bring my cat to her normal DR. For some real help. They did all they could for her but she passed away on jul 31st which is today. If you love your pet you will find a better emergency vet for them. This place is just money hungry and they don't care about your pet at all. They wasted a lot of time and they could've saved my baby. The dr. At the human society stated she never fully came out of the sedation that was given to her at blue pearl. Dr Kamen also stated that I could take my pet to the ASPCA but since she's an older cat and not a kitten they probably won't want to help her as much since she won't live for every long. The care was compassionate and accurate as I had taken my cat to the Downtown office the night before where he was misdiagnosed and I was treated horribly by the veterinarian. I would give them zero stars if I could... My dog recently passed away. I do want to note that he passed away in my arms while I was on my way to the hospital, so they are not responsible at all. Once I arrived, they took him away to see if there was anything they could do.... While I'm freaking out crying, the receptionist kept insisting I fill out paperwork. Certainly the best way to console someone whose pet just died, right? I do understand that paperwork needs to be filled out, so this has no relation to the rating I'm giving them. I opted to have a private cremation for my dog. I was told his ashes would be available by the end of the following week... No one called. The second week I called three times. First, let me say the doctors and staff here are INCREDIBLE. Wonderful service, very caring, very sweet. The facilities are very clean and wonderful as well. However, everything everyone says here about the money is accurate. My dog was very sick, and Blue Pearl assumed it was cancer, but still wanted to do a diagnosis by exclusion, meaning they kept her for a week while running test after test to eliminate possibilities. After a week, I had already spent close to $12,000 (yes, TWELVE THOUSAND DOLLARS) to find out what my dog DIDN'T have. Finally, they diagnosed the cancer. They recommended radiation treatment that would extend my dog's life 9 months-2 years (for this type of cancer). This cost another $15K. Sadly, my dog died four weeks (and $27,000) after treatment was completed. I'm not complaining about the money. I was fortunate enough to be able to pay for it, but there are many people who would not have been able to afford this. I find them to be very exploitative, to be honest, because they can be. If you love your pet, and you have the means, you will do anything to save them. Firstly, you need to check your bill carefully. They bill by the day, and there were certain days we would have been double charged for tests. There was one day in particular that the bill was off by a thousand dollars!!! The admin was very confused, but the doctor cleared it up quickly. I am disappointed that the treatment didn't work... and so obviously didn't work, so much so that she died four weeks after her treatment was completed. But again, the doctors and the staff are wonderful, but be warned that you will pay a fortune for treatment here. read more

NEVER...I repeat, NEVER take your pet to this place. I have never in my life been so appalled by the lack of bedside manner the people who work at this facility have. My dog was in critical condition, vomiting blood, blood in his stool, and unable to move his back legs. My vet called ahead to ensure we would be seen right away. When we arrived, they shuffled me into a room and let my dog lay there helpless on an exam table for 2.5 HOURS and not ONCE coming to check on him or hook him back up to fluids. He defecated on the table and when I asked someone to come help clean it up, they looked at me like I had 5 heads and never came in to the room. I had to clean it up myself. The excuse for the wait was that they were "understaffed" however throughout the 2.5 hours I witnessed countless vet techs/nurses and staff going in and out of rooms, as well as about 10 girls at the front desk laughing up a storm like it was the best day ever, while my dog laid there as sick as possible with no one to care for him. They indicated he was "low risk" on the form and then someone came into the room and slapped a sign on the door that he had Parvo - before any doctors ever even talked to me. By the time he was seen, he was in worse shape than when he first came in. I truly have never been so disgusted and appalled by the lack of care and attention my dog received. He tragically passed away and I believe he would have had a fighting chance had I never stepped foot in this horrific place they call an animal hospital. If you don't have either you should try your very best to find help somewhere else, practically anywhere would be less expensive. I have to take one star away only because this place is pretty expensive. But if you have a pet, the sad truth is, it's only a matter of time before something serious happens that's going to set you back a bundle. It's the reality of pet ownership. The service here is amazing. You're going to pay a lot for emergency pet care wherever you go, so you may as well go somewhere good. So here's the story. Last Saturday night, it was late, and I was just discovering my male cat Gunther was straining to pee, and that there was blood in his pee. I knew this was serious, and brought him in first thing Sunday morning. (If he had been straining without passing urine at all, I would have gone straight away.) Anyway, the place is very professional. I was greeted very promptly, so they could gauge whether or not my animal needed immediate attention (like an ER) and even though we weren't in dire need of assistance, we were seen promptly. The doctor and technician were thorough and gentle with Gunther. He ended up having to spend the night. The staff called me several times during his stay with updates, which was great. Whenever I called them, I was always able to speak directly to the doctor and was only on hold a short while. Impressive! They also updated my regular vet at least twice about Gunther's progress, which impressed me also. Since he's been home, I've called twice to ask questions about his follow up care, and the doctors have been happy to speak with me. Great hospital! Having read some bad reviews of another 24 hour animal hospital in this city, I'm glad I went here first. read more

My 10 year old West Highland White Terrier was having what I thought was a seizure early Saturday morning. We rushed him to Blue Pearl and he was immediately taken in for care. We felt very confident about the medical staff and were very happy with the treatment he received. It turns out he had a stroke and we were given good advice on follow-up testing with our regular vet. I just took my cat (Spencer) here yesterday after being referred to them by my vet to perform a ultrasound guided biopsy. My poor boy has a mass in his intestines & a mass in his lungs. After reading some of the reviews, I was tempted to cancel my appt, especially since it was originally w/ Dr. Rocha. 1) I was late & I called to infer them & there wasn't a problem or any attitude given by the receptionist. She informed me that Dr. rocha wasn't in & I'd be seeing Dr. Lachowicz. 2) Rayshawn @ the front desk lead me right into a room & immediately paged Dr. Lachowicz, one of the oncologists. I didn't even have to wait in the waiting room. 3) Anthony, one of the oncology technicians, came in shortly after to get a complete history of the issue that I had come in for that day. He was very patient & understanding as I was highly emotional over what was going on with my pet. He was so understand & sympathetic. And he was so gentle with my little guy when he took the weight & tempeture. 4) Dr. Lachowicz IS a godsend. He looked over everything, explained the different variables (if it could be lymphoma, carcinoma or sarcoma) between the issues presenting in my cat. He throughly explained what tests he'd like to do & what he hoped to find. He even explained what the treatments might be depending on what he found. He was so patient, through & understanding about my little guy. I didn't feel rushed or pressured to make any decision. He even took the time to draw up an estimate for the 4 procedures that he proposed. He understood that I was in a financial bind & that I wasn't a horrible human for not running all of the tests if I couldn't afford them. Never once did I feel pressured to do every test. Once I got the estimate & confirmed that they did take Care Credit, I had them run all 4 tests for a total of $1500. (Not to high in my opinion as it was a needle biopsy guided by ultrasound of 4 different areas.). I did confirm that I wouldn't be charged the full amount if they weren't all done. I left my little guy in their hands for the tests to be done. Once they were done, Dr. Lachowicz called me personally to inform me that Spencer's diagnosis was much worse than originally thought. He had 4 masses in his lungs that couldn't be biopsied due to air around his lungs. (They had run another X-Ray (which he DID NOT change me for) to confirm where the original mass was & that's when they discovered 3 more.). They did the other biospy in the intestine but werent hopeful as to his overall prognosis. They air around his lungs, which can't be removed w/o causing further complications, will most likely kill him before the cancer does. Dr. Lachowicz was so apologetic for Spencer's diagnosis. I truly feel like he cared about Spencer even though he'd only just meet him. I picked Spencer up w/o any issues or attitude that's been described in other reviews. The bill was correct & only $500. & as I've said, I wasn't charged for the additional X-Ray that was done. For such a trying emotional day it went as calmly as possible. If you have to see an oncologist @ this vet, demand Dr. Lachowicz. Always ask for an estimate. & get Care Credit. Pets are expensive. Cancer is expensive. At least Dr. Lachowicz doesn't make you feel like a bad owner for any decision you might make for your pets health (as I've read in other reviews). read more

Blue Pearl saved my dog's life - no question about it. Their prices are exhorbitant but so are the fees at any other vet in NY and that's just a fact of life (unfortunately). What is inexcusable is their incompetence in processing pet insurance claims forms. I have now had my second conversation in three weeks over their failure to submit the form to the insurer that I had provided to Blue Pearl and this involves an $8500 bill (major surgery). The medical attention my dog received was great. While she stayed in the hospital everyone was available to answer questions. Her discharge papers stated to call the Dr. in 2 weeks to give them an update and 2 months later i am still waiting for the call. i feel if you are paying you will get answers to your questions once you leave you will here. I have taken all your information and the Dr. will call you back. Your phone will never ring you will here CRICKETS. read more

No one goes to Blue Pearl because it's a happy place. This is for the 3 am emergencies or when the neighborhood vet can't diagnose. They aren't cheap but they are the best. Darwin's history is way too long, gross and depressing to detail here, but he has had...digestive issues since he was an older kitten (12 years ago).Vet after vet, each with different diagnoses and medicines and tests and diet modification. T-Touch and Feliway and calming treats. Nothing worked. He'd be okay for a week or two, and then right back. We have spent an embarrassingly high amount on vet bills over the years and only a vague handle on what was going on but not how to treat. Our neighborhood vet sent us to Blue Pearl and Dr. Eriksson in particular. The hospital is state of the art and Dr. Eriksson is the first vet who is getting a handle on Darwin's condition. He is proactive about treatment instead of trying different levels of the same meds and hoping it works. I felt immediately comfortable putting Darwin in his care. Dr. Erikkson is knowledgeable as well as patient with both the cat (who fearfully hisses at both living and inanimate objects when away from home) and in his phone calls to me. He does not rush me off while we discuss next steps and answers all my questions. This is still an ongoing issue but I have confidence that if anyone can give this poor cat some relief, it is this vet and this hospital. A note about the fees: The other Yelpers are correct, they are expensive. And they do request payment up front. But, they are a business and this is NYC. I have Care Credit, which has saved us over and over with vet bills. **They also take exotics. read more

I know I need to preface this by saying every individual is different and reacts differently to treatments and medians are just that...medians of a sample. But at the same time I have to update to say...Blue Pearl and Dr. Lachowitz the oncologist CURED MY DOG OF CANCER. 4 years later and she has had no recurrence at all. I bet if you did a study of dogs diagnosed with undifferentiated sino-nasal sarcoma after the standard curative intent protocol of debulking surgery and radiation...there'd be ONE dog in the study alive 1460 days later.That dog would be Sofie, the destroyer of Kaplan-Meier curves. Of course, 4 more years of full, high quality life means Sofie was around long enough to develop another condition that was on the grey line of choosing treatment versus non-treatment. Of course, no question about it, she was going back to Blue Pearl. Did I mention they cured my dog of cancer? Sofie just had right side liver lobectomy at the Brooklyn location yesterday. They removed a (presumed) Heptocellular Carcinoma. Sofie was under the care of Dr. Kelson Danielson who was amazing. He let me stay with her until it was time to go in (as a moderate to high risk procedure, we had to say our goodbyes before she went under.) He called right before he started after she went under, and he called the second she was extubated and awake. He explained everything to me on the phone, gave me the play by play of the surgery, explained the continued risks and what they are monitoring her for and gave me an update on her condition again that evening. Sofie was in the ICU overnight and less than 24 hours after a liver lobectomy I was able to take her for a walk. Sofie: 2. Certain Death: 0. When I saw her this morning Sofie told me she thought Dr. Danielson was super cute and she likes being doted on by him. She's shameless. So I think maybe her positive attitude and fast recovery is related to trying to impress him. (This will sound strange but as a person in my late 30s that still gets carded to buy scratchy tickets, I have an inherent trust of a surgeon who looks young AND is at the top of his field. I know how tough that is to pull off.) But still - she is bright, alert, not over sedated and generally doing well. When Dr. Danielson called yesterday he said he was looking right at Sof while the vet tech was icing her incision! Ha! I swear this is for real. I am a human, no one has ever iced my incisions :( Anyway - this is the type of round the clock care she is getting. Don't be dissuaded by the bad reviews here. Yes it costs money. And I totally understand some people don't have the money to spend on an animal. But its insane to think a specialty vet hospital with a linear accelerator is going to give away care for free. You may have to service some debt to care for your pet here. That means you need reasonable access to credit. (Although employers by law can no longer judge people based on their credit in NYC - I still will. Sorry. Really, you're going to blame the hospital because no lender will spot you an unsecured $5k? C'mon.) Similarly, ease and accuracy of diagnosis - particularly in an emergency situation has ZERO relationship to cost. Its pretty clear that the doctors here are well trained in treatment protocols. But if you bring your dog in for lethargy, vomiting, and inappetance - what do you expect? (I once got into differential diagnosis hell myself for an atypical ear infection and ended up with an a brain MRI with contrast.) If you bring an animal in for an emergency situation, emergency vets will be trained to look for emergencies. I don't understand these people that say, "they failed to diagnose her CHF or parvo." How do you NOT know your dog has symptoms of CHF or pancreatitis or a UTI or parvo? (Cmon, PARVO. Its a $10 vaccine?!?) The vast majority of the things these ER docs must see aren't acute onset conditions but rather acute symptoms of chronic conditions developed but that went dismissed or unnoticed. Which is really unfair to Blue Pearl AND the pet itself. I KNOW when my dog is having a bit of trouble peeing, or is coughing, or has been eating less and I only had 2 semesters of organic chem in undergrad. In this last episode of illness, I knew my dog was eating less and drinking more by using a 99 cent measuring cup and a pen. How do you wait until a UTI is so bad an animal has to go to an ER doc? Anyways - the treatment protocols exist for a reason. They've been studied and restudied, results replicated, and residents trained on them. Don't wait until your dog can't stand up to get them evaluated. So far, following these basic rules of caring for an animal companion - I've had excellent discussions, communication, explanations and cost benefit analysis from every doctor at Blue Pearl. And so far I've had great outcomes. Eventually Sofers is going to end up with something untreatable but so far she's done great and had both her quality and quantity of life extended by Blue Pearl. read more

My vet who is a house call vet and does not do surgery recommended Dr. Greenberg to spay my french bulldog. She is healthy and does not have severe breathing problems. First of all when I called to make an appointment I was told they do not do spays unless they are doing another surgery. I went to consult with the vet about the spay anyway after my vet discussed my situation with Dr. Greenberg. I ended up with an estimate of 6,000.00 which 300.00 was the spay. So here I am trying to get my dog spayed and with a possibility of a surgery which might not be needed. To top it off I was charger 200.00 for the consultation which would not be applied to the surgery. The doctor was nice enough but I think the prices are ridiculously high .... read more

The facilities and the doctors (Dr. Pacifico & Dr. Ferrari) are amazing, but it will cost you. I think this place is nicer than the hospital I go to! Had to go here because my dog Chevy needed specialized care for her her heart problem which caused other issues. Ultimately, we had to put her down, but the professionalism and the bedside manner of the whole staff was phenomenal. It's never an easy decision, but I know the doctors exhausted all options available. We were allowed as much time as we needed to say goodbye to our beloved dog, in our own private room. If I lived in the area, I would not hesitate to bring our pets there. It's expensive, no doubt, but if you have the means, I'd highly recommend this place. read more

When our 8 year old cat Suma stopped eating and became lethargic, we brought him to Blue Pearl. After running some tests, it was clear that he was very sick and needed hospitalization. Further tests indicated the worst-that he was dying. Throughout this shocking and miserable time, the staff were incredible- kind, polite, and helpful. Dr. Emily Ehmann was unbelievably patient, and empathetic, listening to all of our questions and providing thorough, clear explanations. She was amazing. I would recommend this pet hospital unreservedly. read more

Took my kitten here after she got into an accident and I wanted to make sure she was ok. At first everything seemed ok and got admitted immediately as an emergency and taken into an examination room. A vet tech came in almost immediately who took a brief history, temp, and inspection. Stated thinking so far so good. After she performed her tests, the vet tech told us doctor would be with us shortly. After over an hour of waiting I went outside to ask how much longer the vet would be. Apparently this is a difficult question to answer at this office as it took them a few minutes to answer that the vet would be with us shortly. After asking again for an answer in terms of actual time, I was answered with they don't know still. Keep in mind that I was admitted as an emergency, making me sign this nice waiver saying it was an emergency and requiring 175$ payment minimum. Thankfully it wasn't a life threatening emergency as I would find out from the next hospital I took her too. But I can't imagine how badly if someone showed up with an actually emergency what would happen. But I digress, so after getting an ambiguous answer on how much longer it would be I waited for another 10-15 mins before walking out and taking my kitty to another vet. Would not recommend, and if they send a bill I will not pay and argue tooth and nail. Ultimately my main gripe is that if this is an emergency animal hospital, they are dangerously understaffed and any real emergency for your pets should be taken elsewhere. I took my dog here after he hit his head rather hard. After spending countless hours, X-rays etc. I was informed by Lauren Stoltze (vet) that it was not an issue to take him home, she was not concerned at all and he should be fine. 4 hours later my dog and best friend died. I proceeded to contact an attorney only for NYC Veterinary Specialists to send an email on behalf of Ms. Lauren Stoltze outlining that she highly recommended that he spent the night in ICU. This was not the case. She assured us that there was no issue and was "very confident" that there will be no issue. This clearly was not the case and my family is devastated. This is the only experience I have had with this vet and unfortunately the only one I know of open 24 hours in NYC. I highly suggest asking or demanding another specialist who will be honest with you. read more

Terrible. Long waits, techs don't use gel when taking temps, high prices and bad "docs". Our pup had some cuts and bruising on her tail after getting hit by a car. She was fine save for some road rash and cuts at the base of her tail. We had X-rays taken and they said there were no breaks. After they shaved a bit of the tail and cleaned it up a bit we were sent on our way after 5 hours with a $600-ish bill. The X-rays were taken at our vet but read by blue pearl. Things were fine for 3 days until we noticed blood on her bed. There was a cut right below where they shaved and it had become infected. We asked for antibiotics but were told they weren't necessary. I took her back that night in hopes that they would fix their mistake. After 2 hours and the gel-less tech I finally saw another "doc" who said she would take a look. 30 mins later the tech came in and said that it would be a very long wait and that I should leave her and go home. They 'd call. They gave me an estimate for the work at full price. I told them this was their mistake and they said they'd split the bill with me and I agreed. 4 hours later we get a call where they said they didn't have time to do much other than re bandage the wound. I picked her up and was given a bill larger than my original estimate which I refused to pay. It took another hour to get her. Now we find out that not only did they miss the cut that became infected but they read the X-rays incorrectly and she did have a broken tail. Now we are going to be forced to amputate our poor pups' tail. If you value your pet or your wallet look elsewhere. read more
