BluePearl is expensive. It is a business. However, if it's an emergency and your regular vet is unavailable, BluePearl is the go-to on the West Side. (On the East Side it's Animal Medical Center, where the vets are miracle workers!) Blue Pearl is a real hospital and your vet may refer you there in extreme cases. We've had a few and have been very satisfied with the dedicated of the vets and staff. read more

Do not use this place! We had an awful experience. Took our seriously ill cat there at 8:00 p.m. on a Saturday night. Heard no word for hours. Staff kept saying there were a lot of patients, lack of available vets. Still no x-rays hours later. No one came to tell us how our cat was doing and at what stage the exam was at. We had no idea what was going on and this went on and on for hours. It all ended at about 3:00 a.m. (yes, truly) when a vet finally came and said they really didn't know, it might be her heart or lungs and she had fat around her heart. We are not rich people. We had to make a decision, and we decided not to go on and bankrupt ourselves. The vet didn't agree, but then, more useless tests would have meant more money for them. It was a horrible decision, but we felt it was better for our beloved cat and that we couldn't go through this again emotionally or financially. Having a pet now involves large outlays of money. I found Blue Pearl to be not only heartlessly slow, but not very informative. read more

Wonderful. After a horrible experience at Animal Medical Center (don't go here!!!) I was thrilled to deal with Dr. Ferrari. My cat has just been diagnosed with sinus cancer and it has been devestating. The doctor was nothing but wonderful, calling multiple times to update me and acting totally empathetic. I felt great leaving my kitty in her care. I would LOVE to give this place 5 stars but the costs are insane. I understand things are pricey but they should really offer a payment plan or something to encourage other pet owners to give proper care to their animals! read more

She's fantastic, her nurse Jason equally so, and the facility is organized, calm, clean, and my primary Vet at West Chelsea Vet Clinic loves them as well. Came in twice for an emergency visit. Last Saturday my dog swallowed someone's glove at the dog run. Well, today, 9 days later, she swallowed another one. (People need to watch their stuff!!) They took me in right away and a tech came to the exam room within 5 minutes. The vet came in soon after and induced vomiting for my poor doggy. Both times she threw up the glove. Everyone was friendly, the visits went smoothly and quickly (was there 40ish minutes which includes the 20 it took for my dog to throw up), and the vet was sweet and knowledgable. She even remembered my dog and we had a good laugh about her glove swallowing hobby. read more

Saved my cat's life with a GI surgery. Answered all if my questions clearly and patiently in advance of the surgery, upon releasing my cat, and then on the phone after the fact. Extremely expensive. CONSIDER YOURSELF WARNED! I was out of the country on vacation last month and left my dogs in the care of my trusted pet sitter/ dog whisperer. I was upset to receive an email from her while I was on the other side of the world that my 6 year old schnoodle had vomited/not eaten all day. Just to air on the side of caution and considering it was late on night, I authorized her to bring the dog to Blue Pearl for an emergency check up. The doctor there suggested x rays to ensure the dog had not eaten anything she wasn't supposed to and that there were no blockages. My dog sitter left the dog there to be examined and said she'd be back in one hour to retrieve her. During that time, I received a call from the doctor informing me he was very 'concerned' that the dog (whom he had no history with) did not seem like herself and would require a battery of tests and overnight care (in the amount of $2200) to be sure. He also posed lovely gaslighting questions such as 'Do I have your permission to rescusitate the dog if needed or is it a case of DNR..?' Hearing my 6 year old, otherwise healthy pup could be in need of emergency rescusitation sent me into an understandable panic. I eagerly agreed to the $2200 and purchased a $1000 plane ticket to return home early to my dying pup. After spending the evening crying & panicking, my dog sitter called the following morning to inform me she wanted to pick the dog up as she was now totally fine, as corroborated by the hospital staff, however since I'd already agreed to pay for 24 hour care they were intent on keeping her anyway. At that point my dog sitter insisted she had enough, was taking the dog home, and somehow negotiated a partial refund with them. I'm horrified a veterinary clinic would take advantage of a loving pet owner who was far from home and would have paid any amount to keep her dog healthy in order to monetize the situation to the fullest. read more

This place is a factory of profits for its owners. My dog just died there on Monday morning, and the promises made that I would hear from the cardiologist, Dr. Gretchen Singletary never happened. They're big on giving you HUGE bills and demanding immediate payment with little interest in grieving owners of recently died pets. Dr. Singletary should be ashamed of herself. The practice manager, Tony someone or other sending me a survey to rate their abominable practice, ONE DAY AFTER MY DOG DIED IN THEIR CARE, is the utmost on caring only about bottom line profits and NOTHING about caring for the animals. I walked in this morning with a dead kitten and the woman at the front desk showed no empathy. She was so rude and told me they can't take in dead animals or stray cats. We just took our 3 year old rescue dog here for an emergency visit because he was acting "off" (i.e., no energy, no appetite, just seemed "depressed"). Fast forward to our visit and they were so wonderful. We were in a room with a vet's assistant immediately after walking in. She was so sweet and even acted as if we might be jumping to conclusions by bringing him to the emergency room and not just waiting for our regular vet to see him. (I thought this was particularly nice because I've heard that animal hospitals use the huge amount of leverage they have to capitalize on profits). I did not feel that this place was about money for a single second. Even the vet that came in was absolutely wonderful. She explained everything so thoroughly, she did an orthopedic exam on his legs as well (no extra charge, they include that with emergency visits) and turns out he most likely is a candidate for an ACL surgery (which she suggested to do at our regular vet as Bluepearl's prices would be far higher). To top all of this off, the vet called me the very next night to let me know that she was talking to the surgeon who did the orthopedic exam on him to follow up on some things that she thought would be relevant to his particular situation. I wish that they had a regular vet office because I would absolutely bring my dogs there, without question. I actually feel better knowing that I have this amazing place nearby should a real emergency ever happen. read more

Kindness from all staff from the front desk to the ICU. They call you back and answer your calls with professionalism. Not inexpensive but you can't have state of the art for cheap. My dog has had several hospitalizations/surgeries on an emergent basis as she has a chronic gastrointestinal condition. I was referred to Blue Pearl by Wendy McCulloch, DVM who for my money is one of the best vets in NYC and who I trust implicitly. My dog has had multiple life threatening conditions over the years. Fortunately I have Healthy Paws pet insurance which was one of the best investments I have ever made. Healthy Paws is unbelievably efficient in processing claims and reimbursement. If not for them I would have had to put my dog down. I have taken my dog to Cornell in Stamford and the Animal Medical Center (AMC) in NYC. While those facilities are good and can handle about any emergency, based upon my experience Blue Pearl stands by itself as an outstanding veterinary medical facility. My first comment would be that on every occasion my dog has been admitted I have found the facilities to be spotlessly clean. While I am not a doctor I have an extensive background in medicine having handled hundreds of medical malpractice cases as an attorney and therefore I am in an unusual position to give my opinion. I wish the hospitals I have been to during my lifetime provided the level of care given to my dog that Blue Pearl gives. Their ability to get your pet into the facility, triage the your pet quickly, assess the seriousness of its medical condition and give fair and reasoned medical advice is excellent. My dog has been in their State of the Art ICU multiple times. On her last visit which lasted several days I visited her in an exam room. Whenever we were done my dog would calmly walk back to the ICU on her own and get into her crate. That speaks for itself and the compassionate care that is given. The Blue Pearl doctors are always ahead of the curve in terms of keeping me posted as to what is going on during her /surgery/hospitalizations. Dr. Greenberg, my dog's surgeon, came in at 1am to perform an emergency surgery on my dog. Who does that? He is a great person as well as a terrific doctor. Dr. Ferreri, Internal Medicine, Dr. Pacifico, Internal Medicine, Dr Daly, Critical Care and Dr. Daly, critical care are outstanding Vets. There vet techs Rose and Rachel are incredible. After discharge Blue Pearl's doctors call and follow up to make sure that your dog is ok. The administrative staff is both friendly and efficient. They have helped tremendously in coordinating with Healthy Paws. Again, I would recommend Healthy Paws Pet Insurance to any pet owner. They are outstanding. Finally, I truly feel that the level of compassion is beyond anything I have experienced at any other facility. This has been a tough year with with my dog being so sick but I am so thankful for Blue Pearl. A final note is that they are expensive but no more so than Cornell or AMC. You get what you pay for and I have never felt that they were trying to run the bill up. Their estimates were fair and always on the money. read more

I have been leaving messages for you for nearly 3 months to discuss my bill and the awful thing that happened to me and my family at the hands of your disorganized front desk prior to having to euthanize my dog. I purposely waited 6 weeks to reach out after the unfortunate event so I wouldn't be hysterical or thought to be looking for an outlet for my grief. I was told by one of your more competent front desk folks (after speaking with her twice, 6 weeks apart) that you would call me and that "something would be done" as she was very aware of the situation when it happened. I was told the same by someone in your finance department (one phone conversation, 2 emails). 3 months later, no response from you. In fact the only proactive correspondence I have received is a bill with a late fee. I have been avoiding writing the account of what happened with my dog because it is still a little too painful for me and also, since you do have some decent people working there, hoping we could have a private discussion. Much more my style for a private matter. You see, Paul M practice manager, you picking up the phone actually says you care about the people/pets who come to Blue Pearl and pay the exorbitant fees that you are able to charge since we consider our precious beasts to be family members. I was compelled to write this today after learning that a dear friend of mine who had to put her cat down had an awful experience and has ALSO been trying to contact you with no success. My beloved pooch has been gone exactly 4 months. Perhaps I will wait one more before posting the account of what happened. Or maybe Paul M? You could deign to pick up the phone before that. Because in my world (you know the world of hardworking decent people who have some sort of conduct code), if I behaved like you or the person that messed up there (without any make good in such a difficult time) in the first place, I would no longer be employed. Our beagle was suffering from a lot of pain due to two ruptured discs in her neck. After painkillers and meds didn't help her for two weeks, we found the NYC Veterinary Specialists. Dr. Levitin (Neurologist) was incredible. He was incredibly knowledgeable and reassuring, and he explained to us all of the potential diagnoses and solutions. He laid out pricing for us for all options and made us feel comfortable to make the decision of what to do on our own. We ended up doing a spinal tap and an MRI (which cost quite a pretty penny!!!), and when he received the results...he was completely honest that he wasn't sure if SURGERY was the best way to go. We know a neurosurgeon for HUMANS, and Dr. Levitin was completely open to us sending the x-rays to the neurosurgeon and getting a second opinion. We decided not to operate based on both the neurosurgeon's and Dr. Levitin's recommendations, and Dr. Levitin continued to prescribe more meds for our dog. She got better!! And the best part was that Dr. Levitin continued to follow up with us via phone calls until she was completely better :) read more

We brought our kitten here at 12:30am when he started to sneeze his head off after being super lethargic. (Adopted him from an animal shelter a few days earlier). Everything was super clean, and the staff was friendly. Our kitty got some fluids in him and some L-lysine to help him get better. Guess it's normal for cats to get super sick after living in a shelter with other infected cats. Yeah it cost over $200, but it was worth it to make sure he wasn't dying in the middle of the night. We adopted a 4 year old dog from a shelter in Manhattan and a few days later, as neurotic new dog owners, the dog was poorly with diarrhea and vomiting through the night and eventually we decided to take her to an emergency vet to be on the safe side. A quick call to these guys made me feel immediately better when the receptionist we so calm and helpful and said we could bring him in straight away. When we got there, we were seen by a nurse and a vet within 2 minutes! Everyone we met with was so calm, helpful and friendly we really received great service. The vet gave great, clear advice after doing some tests and explained everything we needed to know. I can't praise them enough for how they delivered absolutely what we (and our dog!) needed. He's now on the mend and his neurotic new parents are much calmer. read more

We took our cat Velcro to Blue Pearl in the middle of the night as he was crying out. They saw us right away. Our vet (whose name I believe was Dr. D'arcy, I think?) was very kind and gave us a cost estimate of the potential treatments. Her tech was great too--a young man whose name I believe begins with R. They were concerned about his breathing and took him into the treatment area right away. Unfortunately, our little baby had congestive heart failure and because he was advanced in years, we opted for euthanasia. The doctor was extremely compassionate--the whole team was, in fact. They gave us all the time we needed with him and even a private room to sit with him for awhile after the performed the shots. I hope I never have to go in there again...but with two other kitties at home, that time may come. The only reason I'm giving this four out of five is the cremation package felt a little gimmicky. They did a beautiful job with the paw print and they give you a gorgeous, engraved box of ashes, but the bag was full of promotional materials for a pet memorial garden. Even the box itself had some promo on the bottom. We were glad they took such care with our cat's remains, but the promo left a bit of a sour taste in an otherwise positive experience--as positive as that kind of experience could be. But thank you, Dr. D and Tech R, for being so good to our little Velcro in his last moments. read more

My experience during an emergency visit was beyond my expectations. My beloved dog was having trouble breathing; within 10 minutes of arriving she was being evaluated by the doctor and given oxygen to ease her breathing. Possible diagnoses, next steps in diagnosis and care, and associated costs were explained to me at every step. I was given a private room to sit in, and was welcome to stay there throughout the first hours of tests and care. As my fur baby had to stay in the ICU overnight, I was taken to say goodbye before I left, and received updates by phone that night and the next morning. Discharge and aftercare instructions were clear when I was able to take her home the next day. Now 3 days later and my baby has seen her usual vet and is recovering well - from rodenticide poisoning, which I did not previously know was a threat. My thanks to all the wonderful people at Blue Pearl who saved her life. I wish the care at hospitals for humans was this good! read more

I have used Blue Pearl twice, once long ago for an emergency, and this past week for diagnostic surgery. In both cases, I found all staff to be exceedingly professional and concerned for both the well-being of my cats as well as for me with my own anxiety. On my most recent experience, I was fortunate to have Dr. Marc Greenberg doing the surgery, and was consistently impressed and grateful for his solicitous, thorough care. He remembered Scout from a consultation SIX MONTHS previously, and treated him like a VIP from beginning to end. As a precaution, he went beyond what my regular vet had recommended in terms of testing, and had he not, we would have ruled out some possibilities, but we would NOT have zeroed in on the actual problem, which, it turns out, should be very treatable. Dr. Greenberg was conscientious in his communication with me, calling me the day before the surgery, three times the day OF the surgery, and again the next day to prepare for Scout's release. He called two days later to check in on him, and the next day to give us the results of that extra testing and seemed as thrilled as I was to know that it was NOT small cell lymphoma (one of the possible outcomes), but rather something that (his words) would allow Scout to "put some meat back on his bones". Although I know he is busy and spends long hours at the hospital (judging by the times that he called me), he never made me feel like he was rushing through the calls or doing them just because he should. Finally, he asked me if I would give him a call in the future (after treatment from my vet) to let him know how Scout is doing--and I totally believe he meant it. Dr. Greenberg's profound interest in my "boy" is deeply appreciated! The only negative about Blue Pearl is that it is very expensive--but frankly, it was worth every penny to know my kitty is going to be OK, and to be able to have such a high level of confidence in their work! read more

We have brought 2 dogs in here in the past month. They took amazing care of our boy - Dr. Kyles did bladder stone removal surgery. The vet tech was amazingly compassionate, the ladies at the front desk were so helpful and kind - Dr. Kyles was honest, patient and clearly knew his stuff. Our girl saw Dr. Bishop last night - although we still don't have an answer, she was amazing to us - explaining everything and making recommendations to help us sort out what's happening. Please understand I am only writing our experience and my opinion of this facility. Our 16 year old little doxie woke up not eating. I noticed his stomach distended and rushed him over to this hospital. He already had arthritis and had lost his vision. They said they wanted to do some tests and keep him overnight. The next morning I called and it took two hours for a doctor to get back to me. My husband went in to see our dog hooked up in a cage to a breathing apparatus and iv to keep him hydrated. At this time we also spoke to our regular vet and had them speak with him, however the information they were giving him was vague. After speaking with our vet I decided I wanted to bring him home. His breathing was labored and although he had ongoing comorbidity they wanted to keep him another night and did not recommend us bringing him home. The doctor had said they wanted to keep him and then we would "make a decision" as what to do next. I knew what they meant. I insisted we take him home and we had to sign a document saying they disagreed. It was time to say goodbye to our little guy, yet they wanted to do more tests and put him through more torture. We brought him home and the next day said goodbye. We didn't want our best little companion to suffer another day and lead a life of one illness after another. The problem with our case was this. They wanted to keep him as long as they could and do test after test. I am sure the vets there are capable and care about dogs, however the facility thrives on people like us, who are helpless and frightened for our little friends. In 24 hours we spent over a shocking $3,000.00. I felt taken advantage of in a time when we were completely broken-hearted and worried. And if you have the money then fine, money is no issue. We have always done what was best for our dog. Only I would never take a pet to Blue Pearl again. read more

Update: we received a call from a practice manager stating the matter would be rectified, and it was not. I later found out three other clients went through this very same type of scenario, we will all be pursuing this. If anybody reading this is desperate and has an emergency and must go here, expect and accept to NEVER get reimbursed by your insurance. The veterinarians there distort every single thing you convey in such a way that medical reimbursement is an impossibility for a referral. Furthermore, the evaluation ends up being completely documented subjectively according to the emotions of the provider, and what she feels to be of priority, and what she recollects, especially if they are rushed as this one was. Expect the word "chronic" to be used interchangeably with the word "acute", in the medical world - there's a need to be accurate and exact, especially when spending thousands of dollars on our pets who are our children when we are depending on insurance reimbursement and Blue Pearl in their utter apathy and medical negligence is ensuring in every single way that this can not happen. read more

Did have one of may dogs in a couple of years ago and was impressed at the time by the doctor who worked with her (once again front office staff awful at that time). Just had to reschedule an appointment that took six weeks to get scheduled (so I do not lose my own job!) and when asked if anywhere else I could get my sick dog for treatment more quickly than another six weeks out pretty much got hung up on ... this after waiting over 20 minutes to talk to a rude person. read more

I had the most disturbing and heartbreaking experience at BluePearl. I was told by my dog's vet that she had congestive heart failure, but treatment was possible. They sent me to BluePearl because they were closing for the day and BluePearl was an overnight facility. They took my little girl to another floor, to what I assumed was to give her oxygen and start treatment. I finally asked what was happening after a very long 30 minutes. They told me the doctor wouldn't be there until the morning and that my baby was in a cage. They knew I was sitting there waiting and didn't feel the need to tell me. More importantly, my girl was dying and they stuck her in a cage waiting for a doctor who wasn't showing up for another 12 hours. I angrily demanded her back. They took their time and still charged me over $200.I took her home and held her all night while administering her the oral meds the vet had given me. I had to say goodbye to her the next day, but the idea of her in that cage all alone with no care ... how disgusting. Hideous place; hideous excuse for an animal medical facility. read more

They will giive you one estimate,(Low and HIgh), then give you a second going higher then the original high, only to go higher than the second when you go get you your dog. All they care is MONEY. I waited for almost 45 mins for a vet assistance to come in to measure my dog's temperature, and then another 45 mins -1 hour for the doctor to come in and try to get me to leave my dog here for the night and get IV, Xray, blood works done when he only has a mild fever. I asked for a estimate for the blood work, when she said it will be around $200 but the final estimate was $630. I gave some water to see if my dog drinks it, and he did. I can tell he is better than 1 hour ago. and I told the doctor about this, but she never gave a second option besides leaving him at the hospital tonight and do all the costy exams on him. so at last, I just asked her to prescribe some antibiotics. VERY Disappointing. Front desk lady was looking at her phone and showed impatient when talking to me regarding bills. By the way, my dog recovered the next morning, imagine if I made a wrong decision last night, I would be paying couple thousands for those unnecessary tests. read more

If you have an emergency this is a wonderful place to go. I walked in late on a Sunday evening and was immediately taken to a private exam room and was very quickly seen by a vet tech/nurse, who assessed my dog with great kindness and care. The doctor who treated my dog was wonderful -- great table side manner, warm and caring, and took time to explain everything to me. He also suggested I follow up for tests with my regular vet, who could do them more cheaply than NYC Veterinary/Blue Pearl could. Bottom line, they took care of the emergency, treated my dog with kindness and compassion, and made sure that he left feeling better than when he came in. And they made an accurate diagnosis and sent along all of the records to my regular vet for follow up. The cost of the visit seemed reasonable to me. Overall, as good an experience as you can have in an emergency situation with your pet. read more

My puppy likes to ingest anything that isn't nailed down, and as such we've made several trips to NYC Veterinary Specialists. The facility is state-of-the-art, the staff is caring & highly trained, and the service is quick but extremely thorough. Dr. Ferreri treated my dog. Not only is she a great vet, but you can see that she truly loves her patients. She has even called me several times to see how my little guy is doing post-treatment. I've never seen a doctor for humans do this! They are very specific and up-front about the cost of treatment, and they carefully explain the options and don't push tests/treatments if they think they're unnecessary (some pet owners are more paranoid than others so they present all options). We recently brought our cat in on an emergency. We found the staff , from reception through medical, to be professional, informed and compassionate. The doctor who took care of our cat was excellent - she assessed the situation, clearly explained the course of action and was kind and compassionate. Emergency medicine is never inexpensive - but all costs and pricing were clearly explained. Our cat had to stay at the hospital over night. They invited us downstairs in the treatment part of the hospital to say good night. They call the next day with updates. Upon her discharge we met with the nurse who took time to explain the treatment needed at home. Nobody rushed us and they were supportive and thorough. I recently had to rush my kitty to Blue Pearl when she was having seizures one weekend. While it was one of the most horrifying experiences of my life, I knew that she was in good hands at Blue Pearl. First, we saw an ER doctor -- Dr. Gibeon. She was very straightforward and I immediately trusted her judgment. And when I was overwhelmed by the emotion of the situation and all of the information that was being thrown at me, I appreciated that Dr. Gibeon weighed in and directly said "If it were my kitty, I would do ____." My kitty was then referred to Blue Pearl's neurologist, Dr. Levitan, for further testing. I cannot say enough positive things about him. He is kind, knowledgeable, patient, caring, and impressive. I was hesitant to consent to the MRI because it involved general anesthesia (which is always risky), but I knew that my kitty was in goods hands with both Dr. Levitan and the vet techs and nursing staff at Blue Pearl. I also appreciated that Blue Pearl was in constant communication with my regular vet at West Chelsea. So everyone was on the same page at all times. I am grateful that we have access to such a wonderful facility with such amazing doctors. I went to Dr. Bien on a Sunday morning after my cat was coughing through the night and seemed to have difficulty breathing. Upon walking into the clinic, everyone from the front desk to the nurses and doctor treated my cat as their own. They took my cat downstairs immediately and checked on her. I was worried my bill would be nearly $1,000. When Dr. Bien came upstairs, she consoled me letting me know that what my cat had was not an emergency but something to keep and eye on. She gave me the option for an x-ray but said that it wasn't necessary. She also took down my cat's regular vet information so she could pass on what care my cat received at this clinic. I was relieved that I wasn't pressured to do anything that was not necessary and expensive. I left feeling so relieved that my cat was okay and my bill was not excessive. I would absolutely recommend this place to anyone. read more

When our beloved dog Bernie was diagnosed with cancer out vet referred us to Blue Pearl and Dr. Timothy Rocha. And we are so grateful that he did. Dr. Rocha took the time to explain to us Bernie's condition and treatment options. And he did so with incredible compassion. The oncology vet techs were wonderful as well in the way they interacted with us and our dog. We traveled from eastern Nassau County to the west side of Manhattan every couple of months because we knew Bernie was getting the best care possible. He went on to live a happy, pain-free 18 months after his diagnosis on medication alone. We can't thank Dr. Rocha and his staff enough for all they did for us and Bernie. read more
