well despite passing by here and thinking this place is bougie my friend gave me opportunity for our last day staying in Clearwater Beach Florida and heading back to Chicago Illinois tomorrow. The mai tai cocktail was strong and not sweet. Service was decent in regards to a explanation of the food. So far what they brought was extraordinary delicious the bread and the molasses ginger muffins was phenomenal. The muffins were very light and not crunchy or heavy on your stomach and the ginger muffins were we ordered two rounds which is why we didn't have any desserts. I am glad I ordered two sea scallops with my grouper and that was superb. My friend ordered the seafood platter which he was happy about. The grilled asparagus was delicious especially whatever sauce they use that they sauteed it with. Well despite that the mai tai was not that great I still give them five stars regards to the food despite unimpressed with the cocktail .ambience had that bougie classic feel. If you come to Clearwater Beach this is a must to go to when you have the money and the chance. The side salads were fresh although the vinegar dressing I was a bit more creamy than vinegar out of the choice of dressings. The escargot casserole was also yummy with the garlic bread they brought out. The eggplant was also superb. I usually don't like eating eggplant but it's Filipino style which is cooked boiled versus fried and it's usually a mushy versus crunchy and the right amount of flavoring or seasoning. Large group of us at two tables. Our server was really kind of terrible but the place was fine. He got one order wrong even though two of us made a big deal about ordering the exact same thing (same steak, cooked the same, same side, same salad, same dressing, etc). He even double checked when taking the order because they were the same. One came out wrong. He didn't really want to send it back when she showed him she didn't get what she asked for. He finally took it away and then she was so embarrassed and the rest of us were about half done eating so she tried to just cancel her entrée. He wouldn't let her do that either! So I felt bad for her. She was our host so I couldn't really argue with the server. I had a fine steak and seafood entrée. The guy next to me had snapper and I tried it and it was phenomenal the next night. I'm so disappointed with this place. It presents as an upscale restaurant, but the food is uninspired and basic. Nothing seasoned or marinated or interesting. Bearnaise was filmy and too thick, Bisque was ok, but the consistency was off. Filet tips with mushrooms was a dry and bland kebab layered with bland onion and peppers, with three button mushrooms that tasted like tap water. The filet was tough. I should have stopped with the wines by the glass, which were obviously chosen for price point and not for flavor. This is a great location with a beautiful entrance and a nice space. So. Much. However, I cannot give a better rating for two reasons. Firstly, a restaurant of this scale should not fry French fries and seafood with the same oil. He got them bronzed as the waiter suggested. I guess that means slightly blackened. Good choice. My girlfriend got the veal marsala. She said it was yummy as well. Her husband got salmon. Friends and myself had dinner this last Saturday evening, it had been the my first dinner here since just after the reopening after Covid. this restaurant had been my favorite place to have a nice dinner in the entire Tampa bay. sadly the place has lost its luster. I miss that they no longer offer lunch , but Covid was the excuse, same as everything else. due to the storm last year the entire restaurant reeks of Mold and Mildew even though they say it was professional remedsated. the mold smell is so bad ruined any chance of a nice birthday dinner as planned. i had a New York striip steak it was very good but the mash potatoes tasted like box flake potatoes our server was very nice , but the whole experience seems to be altered and not very special any longer I mean at this price point mash potatoes should be extra good. again I wanted to love this dinner and the experience, I had always loved it years past but sadly they have allowed the flame to burn out on their watch. at this level of service possibly the management should consider just closing up shop. and I hate saying that. my next nice dinner out I'll probably seek a different venue. read more

I was extremely happy with the restaurant. We went on a Monday, and made reservations. We didn't need them though, as there were a few empty tables. The atmosphere was phenomenal. There was even live piano! The food was amazing. I got the cheeseburger, and it had to be one of the best I've ever had. It was still hot, the cheese was melted perfectly, and it was cooked to order. I had a few bites of the loaded baked potato, and it was to die for. For dessert I had the baked Alaska. Words cannot describe how good this was. The place was very high end, and the wines were endless. I would go again. EDIT: I went a second time and the food was just as good, but the service left a little to be desired. Made my second visit to the beachcomber Restaurant after several days and lo and behold our terrific waitress Rhonda greeted me and recognized my friends by name and drink orders If you visit (and you should)..ask for Rhonda. You won't be disappointed. Now for the food..I ordered the frogs legs with garlic and salad. Six large legs came out piping hot and delicious..my friends had crab cakes which were excellent as well. The owner, Sherri, was extremely rude and our waiter, Nathan, was terrible. We had to constantly remind Nathan of missed orders, and getting his attention was always a challenge. In fact, the head waiter ran us down in the parking lot to admonish us for leaving only a 10% tip on a $669 bill. The fact is, we always tip 25% for great service regardless of the bill amount, however, the rudeness of the owner and the horrible service, was the cause of the 10% tip. My sister-in-law went to the restroom and a couple coming into the restaurant didn't see her and they collided. My sister-in-law fell into some chairs were guest could wait by the hostess stand. They had valet service that was complimentary behind the building. We were seated right away and the ambiance of the restaurant is beautiful. They have outside seating as well. The staff was great and very attentive. There were all different food options to choose from like chicken, pork, shrimp, steak, and of course turkey. The price ranged from $32pp-about $45pp depending what you ordered. However, for that price it came with appetizer, salad, entree, and a dessert! It is "family style" when it was served so it was large dishes of the items and you take and pass around. To start we had warm bread with four different options including corn, cottage cheese, beets, and apple butter. Next we had a salad and lobster bisque. For the main course we had turkey with gravy and mash potatoes which were excellent! A friend recommended the fried chicken so we ordered that as well too and they gave you a large portion of it! Although a bit weak, a margarita with a splash of Pinot Noir and old fashioned with Angel's Envy started a lovely dinner. They told us the fried chicken would be a 45-minute wait. This seemed odd, since it's their signature dish. But it ended up only taking about a half hour. The chicken was moist and delicious, not at all greasy. I've been debating if I should write this review. But here I am. My husband made a reservation for Valentine's Day '23 for 4 people. Two of our party couldn't make it, so I called the restaurant at noon,as a courtesy, and boy was I in for a treat. The woman answering the phone (she's always answering in such a pleasurable tone) sure wasn't feeling the love on Valentines Day and said that they had a table for 4 but not 2...huh? I was an utter shock...you are telling me you can't honor my reservation? Correct, we have you for 4 not 2. Craziest thing ever. I felt like I was being scolded by a school principle. The whole thing left me with such a bad taste in my mouth. Too bad, as they have such a beautiful place, great staff and food. Too bad they lost a local customer. Mad Men move over... This place could be used in the show (minus the smoking...thank god LOL)! I am a huge fan of this old school, classy establishment! I mean who does not love live piano music, white vinyl booths, and a bartender that pours a fantastic Manhattan! I have been here 3 times on two separate vacations and it never disappoints! The staff is professional, and I love that our waitress has been there for 17 years! She made excellent recommendations for food choices, and checked back to make sure everything was perfect. She even asked the bartender to switch to Monday night football when a Rays game was on... I could honestly go on and on about the wine list! It is huge and fantastic! All sorts of price points, we splurged just because it seemed like the thing to do there! You will start with a relish tray and crackers! Love that btw!! Then all sorts of breads. The salads are delish, the steaks have wonderful flavor plus done to perfection! Oh the best kept secret... Add a lobster tail for $12 bucks! I like the bar side of the restaurant... Go look at the telephone booth as it has cool sports memorabilia. This is a little more dressy for FL, and I wouldn't bring kids as they really wouldn't appreciate the restaurant... It's been a few years since I've given my opinion on this iconic Clearwater Beach establishment. Recently, they have opened an outdoor dining area just north of the main building that looks like it can accommodate a lot of folks. We opted to sit in the piano area. With their new cocktail menu, I decided to order their Madness Man Old Fashioned. I guess that I'm dating myself but I hadn't had one in years and it was awesome. Muddled fruit and bourbon are a relaxing combo. There were many seafood specials that night and we were hungry for softshell crabs. Not wanting to be too matchy-matchy, I ordered them fried and my partner ordered his sauteed in a meuniere sauce. After the relish tray(the corn relish was particularly tasty) and salads, the crab feast began. We had also ordered a small portion of their superb fried onion rings with the meal. Both orders of crabs were huge(see pics). Mine came with a remoulade dipping sauce which had a good punch to it. I was a little jealous of my partner's dish. The meuniere sauce highlighted the flavor of the crabs and they were oh so buttery, too! Thinking that we could not eat another bite, we decided to give the dessert menu a cursory glance. Upon the advice of our waiter(Don), I decided to try their special Pineapple Raspberry pie(see pic). It was a tart and tasty combination of flavors that was reminiscent of a rhubarb dessert. The crust was flaky perfection. My partner ordered, as usual, the Praline Sundae with it's toasted rum-cinnamon pecans, vanilla ice cream covered with their homemade hot fudge caramel sauce. My friend and I grew tired of sitting and watching tourists, we didn't want burgers so we decided to look for food. The Beachcomber was across the street, so I pulled up my handy YELP app, and checked the reviews. Most were good, so I nodded, this would be a good place to go, even if I was a little daunted by the three dollar signs. Walking in, the strains of piano music filled the air. The large Christmas tree in the cramped foyer glittered brightly and the hostess (and apparent owner) asked which side of the place we'd like to sit on - The lounge side or the restaurant side. I chose the restaurant. We were lead to the dining room, where white linen table cloths and evergreen decor invited us to sit down. Once seated, we were handed two menus and an extensive wine list. This was for the bottled wines, of which there are only just over 8,000. (8000 wines? GOOD GOD!) I perused it for a moment, but I'm not a wine drinker so I opted to just look at the food menu. I was rather impressed. There were listings for everything from Surf & Turf, to Farm raised chicken to Chilean sea bass and even frog legs. Everything came with a soup or salad, a veg, a starch and of course everything started with their crudite platter. Let's be honest, I've never been to a place where they bring out a serving tray that has cottage cheese, beets with horseradish, apple butter and corn salsa in it. I found it a bit odd, but hey, it's a signature thing, I guess. There were also rolls and crackers offered to us with fresh butter, cut from a stick, I'm guessing. The bread was good, but I didn't indulge in any of the sauces. When the food came out, and it came out rather quickly: It started with a bowl of YUMMY cream of onion soup,and a bowl of Coleslaw - The soup was great, but the slaw was .. well, it was too wet. There was far too much mayo on it. I had a bite and returned it right away, I couldn't eat it at all. The food though, was amazing. My chicken was perfectly fried, lightly crispy with a side of delicious mashed potatoes and Broccoli. My friend's meal was Chilean Sea bass on Risotto and broccoli, he said it was perfectly done. Over all, this was a nice experience. I would come back. Pre-pandemic this restaurant was a 6 out of 5. This was our family's go-to for great food and elegant fun (piano is fantastic), and birthdays for years and years! There was the unique and delicious relish tray, as well as bread baskets that we always saw others ask for more of. There was a dynamic menu with something we all looked forward to having - prime rib was the best! As of Feb 19, 2023, none of that exists anymore (except the fantastic piano player). The menu is very limited, and extremely expensive - $38 for a plate of shrimp as an example. However, the price of food is not necessarily the issue. The hospitality- it took 1 hour and 30 minutes to be served with just the salads that came with the entrees we ordered. It was an early evening on a Sunday. We also watched two separate couples be seated, poured waters, handed menus, and they literally got up left the restaurant after no one helped them for a very long time. With an early reservation secured well in advance, service and support was very lacking and quite disappointing. Food took for ever to be served and was very over priced, especially given the experience. If they are ever able to go back to the menu and operations from decades withstanding, we will be back. Until something else changes, it will be a big let down for you - even if you haven't been there before. read more
