Not bad, but a definite disappointment. For a place that's so expensive and that has been out here for so many years, the food was just okay. Everything was bland with very little seasoning and the menu and specials were just boring. I had a crab cake with mustard remoulade as my appetizer. I enjoyed it, but I prefer a nice jumbo lump crab cake rather than a shredded crab/bread crumb puck. My entree was the petit filet which was a good size and was cooked to the medium rare I wanted, but didn't have any seasoning. My husband's porterhouse was seasoned extremely well though and was delicious. The thin crispy French fries we got on the side were also really great. Dessert was a waste of time. The flourless chocolate cake was either overcooked or not baked properly because it was pasty and chunky and just not good at all. Though it wasn't necessarily the restaurant's fault, the worst part of the meal is that we had about 4 big flies bothering us all through our entrees. We spent a large chunk of time swatting them away from our plates and the waitress just said it couldn't be helped since the restaurant was open to the outside. Went there when it wasn't busy, yet whenever I tried to speak to the waiter he would walk away as I was speaking, as though he was in a rush. I ordered the chicken Parmesan, and my husband the prime rib. The prime rib was mediocre at best but the worst part of the meal was the sauce used for the Parmesan. Bobby Van's is an excellent steakhouse in downtown Bridgehampton. I love this place. It is a beautifully classic restaurant with white linen tableclothes, superb waitstaff and excellent food to back it up. You definitely need to make a reservation, but if you have to wait, there is a gorgeous bar to have a glass of wine while you wait. FOLLOWUP: Had dinner at Bobby Van's last week and WOW, the stars went from 4 to 5 baby!!!! First of all, it is always super fabulous to be seated next to Rudy Giuliani. Then, to be served superior lobster and crab cocktail and super yummylicious oysters with a perfect tini.... LOVE IT. And that's just to start!! I had a bite of everyone's entrees. The filet is very tender and smooth and melts in your mouth; the lamb is perfectly prepared; however, the BEST selection was hands-down the New York Strip. Ehhh..... I don't know if locals avoiding places that attract a lot of tourists has anything to do with feeling that it's "too good for [them]." I've heard summer/weekend visitors of The Hamptons say things like, "The Locals should just stay in on the weekends," but despite the fact that tourists and locals may not be keen on each other in every situation, it's a symbiotic relationship. I grew up in the hamptons (all over- bridgehampton, sag harbor, sagaponack, wainscott, east hampton, amagansett) and am definitely still a local even though I sold out and moved to NYC. Bobby Vans is one of my favorite restaurants. I don't know a thing about steak because I don't eat it, but my parents love it. They have one of the best caesar salads I've ever had which was only made better by the tuna I had added (cooked perfectly and practically melted in my mouth-- in a good way!). Their lobster bisque is something else that's in my top 10 and I adore their pasta dishes. Perfect example of a place that can do it all without sacrificing quality. I also really love Bobby Van's atmosphere, it's definitely one of the classier places in the area and I love that it can be dressy or casual. The service is always prompt and the staff is usually pretty friendly. Minus a star for having to dine in close proximity to Lizzie Grubman and her family, gag. Definitely recommend making a reservation, but I've gotten in without one during the week for lunch. read more

This is based on having drinks at the bar and eyeing diners plates. We were en route to an opening and stopped by -- and I will say this: I am obsessed with Bobby Van's and I don't know why. Was it the casualness but elegance about it was it the bartenders, was it the customers? All of the above. It reminded me of an old school restaurant and that I adore. They made fabulous Martinis. No where worth the $200 for two we paid. The service was just Ok. Our waiter did not introduce him self and did not get us enthusiastic about the food. After having one bite I see why. Portions are WAY to big. The lobster bisque required 15 mins to cool down before we could eat it. The salad calamari was tasty, but was the size of a meal for two. The main course consisted of Hawaiian striped Marlin was excellent with fried oysters with my wife wife hot fresh fluke with I will say was "OK", but $50 dollars for each, sorry it's not Per Se or The French Laundry. Then after our appetizers came, we still didn't have a waiter so we had to ask another waiter if he could serve us. He did, but he was so busy we really didn't get much attention. What a rip off. I don't mind paying for excellent food, however this place so short of the bar. I tried this place twice this week. The staff is quite polite, if only the have a chef that professional. First visit I was told to go with the ribs, they are amazing. Amazingly disappointing. I'll stick with Lloyds ribs from the market. I also tried a weird thick cut bacon with a balsamic and maple glaze. By glaze, they mean a burnt sugar product that is over seared and with some strong chewing risking TMJ for life. I did get into a thin amount of bacon that was almost good. Almost. Second, just a filet mignon, Medium rate with peppercorn sauce and simple mashed potatoes to go. No sauce and a well done steak with a sear that looked like burnt wood. I could throw this fucker through a glass window. Oh and a drink from the bar @ 20.00. You know this place is the bomb. The bartender was a cool guy though. Bob vans, get a fucking chef. These are trained professionals that are highly trained in the art of preparing and cooking. Hire one, a good one and maybe your ratings will actually surpass the 2-3 star range. Went here for my birthday and everything was absolutely amazing, had the twin lobster tails as well as the baked clams both cooked to perfection. This is the rare restaurant that is classy elegant and casual at same time, and it has stood the test of time in the trendy Hamptons. We had an excellent dinner at Bobby Vans tonight and our server Keith was professional and friendly. The crab salad had perfectly crispy and light bits of bacon, very fresh greens and just the right amount of avocado. Shepard's Pie was pitch perfect. As a frequent diner out in the Hamptons, and also a server in the industry, I am speechless over the management service here. On a Monday night entering the off season, my friend and I requested 2 apps from the bar menu to be served at our table. We were told they don't normally do this once by our server, and later on in the middle of dining by the manager again. She also asked if we were ordering anything else so she could send the staff home. She then proceeded to stand behind our table in an empty dining room staring at us until we requested the check. Enough said. Don't dine here unless you want a pricey limited menu, with less than mediocre service. read more

I had the porterhouse since they didn't have a ribeye on the menu (WTF???!?). It was good! The waiter suggested that the two of us ordering it go with a porterhouse for two rather than two single steaks because the cut would be thicker. It was nicely cooked, even throughout, a good char on the outside with a nice buttery flavor. They probably could have seasoned it a bit more, but otherwise it was a good meal. One negative is in the preparation. Like many steakhouses serving the porterhouse, they pre-slice the meat and serve it on a hot plate. It's nice for sharing that way, but there was a pool of oil, butter and juices at the bottom of the plate. When you cut meat while still hot, you can dry it out. At the same time, after you cut it, the meat sits in a pool of liquids and makes the bottom of the steak sog the fuc& up, which just got a nice char in the broiler or on the grill. So while the meat becomes dry in the central parts, it also gets soggy and ruins the char on one side. I've griped about the way porterhouses are ruined many times. Next time that there isn't a ribeye on the menu, I might just have to stick with a strip or filet on their own, since porterhouses are inevitably destroyed on a regular basis at steakhouses. The server here at least had the sense to tip the plate up so that the juices didn't soak the char and make the bottom of the steak soggy. Side note - it is sort of a world of difference to go from ribeye to porterhouse, in terms of flavor. The ribeye just packs so much more of a punch. It's a shame they don't offer one regularly. I know they have them on special on occasion though (lollipop steak). I also had a taste of the lamb, which was very nice as well. I'll have to come back here next summer for the full experience of Jitney riders, tourists, celebrities, and locals mixing at the bar, but in the meantime I'll say that Bobby Van's seems like the kind of place that would become one of my favorite spots if I had a summer share in the Hamptons. I ate at the bar in between lunch and dinner, so the place was pretty empty, but I really loved the ambiance and the service was good. GREAT homemade potato chips served complimentary at the bar. My friend works there and says that it's the best service job she's ever had, the staff is cool and professional. We had the Lobster Roll and the Chinese Chicken Salad. The salad was a bit too salty for me (and I like salty food) and the lobster roll was tasty. Chef Stella has nothing to worry about what's coming out of his kitchen. It's a shame that the service was mediocre at best. The service was prompt, but that can be found at just about any diner or fast food joint. Our server made just about every rookie faux pas possible. My date had a full glass of wine while mine was empty. When asked if I wanted another, our server brought two new glasses. And before my date could finish her first glass, our server married her 1/4 remaining glass (classy) with the new glass - that was never ordered in the first place. When our entrees arrived, our server came right over to the table and assked us if we were enjoying our meal. This was of course before we had a chance to even taste them. Again, food was great, but last gripe is my parting memory of Bobby Vans - a horrible cappuccino. What I was served, was a luke warm cup of esspresso with steamed milk - no froth. I added my normal single sugar packet, then decided to ask for a new one, once I tasted how crappy & cold it was. I'm guessing my server merely nuked the same one, because when my replacement came and I added a sugar packet to it, it was waay too sweet. Bummer. This late in the game a restaurant like this should have a few more options for vegetarians. Even the vegetable soup had chicken stock in it. Bobby Van's is just a nice lower key place to put on the ritz. Usually crowded (even in the off-season) it's one of the more energetic places in Bridge. I have a simple rule for how to dress in the hamptons, do what you will but do it clean. Save the scruffy for BK. Service can lag a little bit at it's busiest and this is a bit of a one trick pony, but seriously though as I write this, I'm starting to crave the steak. Great to amazing steak. Thankfully, Bobby Van's a staple establishment that aims to please and doesn't disappoint. Our server was high-spirited and knowledgable about the specials and existing menu. Had the carrot & ginger soup special and split the lobster mac & cheese and full-size filet. Everything came out coursed beautifully and were prepared beautifully. So loud you cannot even hear yourself chew the delicious steaks.....Go here off season to enjoy a nice menu selection, always great aged steaks, fish specials and good sides. Large portions on all dishes, so make sure you go here very hungry. Carnivor's delight ! This is also a very "Social" place to see celeb's and be seen by the Hampton's in crowd.
