Went to dinner here this evening. Our waiter was by far one of the worst waiters I've ever had. Not only was the service horrible from the start, the bartender started screaming at the wait staff. Literally screaming to the point everyone turned to see what the screaming was about. By far the worst dinner service I've ever had. To the business owner, I would inform your staff not to scream out like that when customers are eating dinner. I've never witnessed anything like that. It's not a good look. Let me start by saying that over many, many years this has been one of my go to restaurants. Very good and consistently dependable dishes are served in a buzzy room with a wonderful bar. Today unfortunately my opinion of this restaurant has changed. We went for a late brunch and I ordered my favorite eggs Benedict. Brunch arrived as did my hard boiled eggs benedict. Our waiter graciously (not) admitted that the eggs were a little over cooked ... Really ? ... and offered to bring me a new soft boiled egg. He did not offer to replace the dish. I have to say to call yourself a steakhouse and not be able to properly cook a steak should be embarrassing. Ordered the bone in sirloin medium rare and was served a well done steak. The waiter was very kind and agreed the steak was over done, and so we sent it back which is not a normal thing for me. Ten minutes later they brought out a steak that had been seared but was so raw in the middle that it was completely cold to the touch. Pretty brutal experience at the location in Bridgehampton. Pricing is standard compared to most other high end restaurants, but the food is not good. Brussels and steak had no flavor or taste. Both dishes came out cold and the restaurant didn't seem to care. I had no intention on even mentioning that both plates were cold until the waiter asked, so I told him. Andrea T. who seems to be the owner stopped by the table with, in my opinion, a rude response. There was no apology and she wanted to "heat up my steak" but since it was already almost gone she simply walked away without letting anyone at the table get a word out. No Andrea, I don't want you to heat up my steak after it's already been cooked nor do I appreciate your sarcastic offer. Just a really weird, strange interaction. The food at Bobby Van's - ALWAYS fabulous and consistent! On my way out to East Hampton last night (Dec. 2) at 8:00 PM, I stopped in for their delicious grilled calamari salad at the bar before heading home. The hostess was very friendly, but the bartender barely looked at me, greeted me with "What'll you have?" and never spoke to me after that. He did not ask how my salad was during my meal, if I would like a glass of water or another glass of wine and did not say thank you or good-bye when I left simply, "You done?". During the hour I was there, he was talking with other guests, but mostly laughing loudly and dropping the f-bomb. SO disappointed with the level of customer service, lack of a welcoming attitude toward a single woman sitting at the bar and not even a smile or thank you. Please step up the training - hopefully he was only a temporary substitute for the usually more professional staff. read more

My wife and I were joined by another couple from the Town to have lunch at Bobby Van's. The rare tuna entree I ordered was rancid and foul smelling when it arrived, We needed to have it removed quickly because of the horrible stench. How could any kitchen staff not see the tuna was old and smelled ???? It was replaced with their hamburger,but not immediately removed from our check. When my wife asked for separate checks ,the hostess rudely said "this isn't a diner"!!! The service sucked- from the two ladies at the front desk who were a little rude to us when we walked in saying party of 5. One of them was more interested in texing on her phone as we mentioned we had a reservation. Our waiter was not in the best of mood and we all felt rushed. No service with a smile. As fas as the food- a friend ordered an old fashioned which he ended up returning because it was not properly made. The waiter was not happy about that, but he at least took the drink back. As a substitute we ordered a shot of st germaine and a shot of gin. The gin was correct but instead of st germaine we were brought simple syrup. When we addressed this the waiter got annoyed and said they didnt have any st germaine....with an attitude at that. He could have told us that from the beginning...and not just give a substitute and pawn it off as if it was st germaine. I had the bobby vans burger....it was dry and had no flavor ...at all. We drove by and never even saw the place , we were up in the area for the day and the restaurant was recommended to us. We came to the place the person at the door was very friendly . The place was not big but cozy with linen service. They had a good crowd of people that seemed like a lot of locals. This is always a good sign . The prices not too bad , food was excellent. Great experience from start to finish. Place was packed. Wonderful hostess experience and waiter Robert was excellent and so professional. Shared the shaved Brussel sprouts to start which they split. Filet mignon at 9 oz was cooked a perfect medium rare. The Chilean sea bass was amazing. Creamed spinach delish. Accepted with no problem a ten year old paper gift certificate. BV's was great once upon a time that now seems years ago. We used to go a couple times a month. We went last summer and I had to send my steak back as I had ordered it rare and it was served well done. Second steak came out medium rare so I ate it and groused about it. After that We took year off. Our family went last night and it was simply awful. Oysters Rockefeller were tiny little oysters slathered in oily cheese, with just a bit of Spinach, absolutely terrible. My Chicken Milanese was abhorrent - old rotten chicken that had been soaked in butter to hide the rottenness and caked in a half inch of bread crumbs. Disgusting. What a disgrace. Sent it back and did bother to order a replacement as I had lost my appetite. My wife's muscles were ok. My son's $60 steak was just ok and over cooked as usual. Check was over $200 for a dogs breakfast. We will never go back. read more

Visiting the Hampton's enjoying a Sunday we decided to go to Bobby vans. I would have enjoyed eating a can of chef boyardee before suffering through that chicken milanesa again. For starters it had no flavor (a little salt and pepper goes a long way), it tasted like they took a pounded chicken breast dipped it in egg and unseasoned bread crumbs and pan fried it in butter and nothing else. I had to put parmesan cheese and black pepper on top to make it somewhat edible. Thank god for my buddies ribs and the bread or I would have left starving. Idk who the chef is but you guys need to possibly retrain him. And this is coming from a Chef and not someone who doesn't know about food. read more

Had dinner with another couple last night. Food was very good and service was excellent. Sadly when paying the bill the Bobby Van's Gift Card for $150 was declined. The "manager" stated that it was only good for two restaurants in NYC. We said the card was purchased in Bridgehampton September of last year. There was no offer on the managers part to make it right. This is a clear case of credit card fraud. Next step is corporate office and maybe NYState Attorney Generals office. Going back? This is not a typical Bobby Vans. It's a moderately expensive restaraunt (especially if you order a lot), but it is great quality and can be incredibly reasonable. DINNER - Lobster Mac & Cheese - This is an almost nightly special in the summer and the best mac & cheese, period. It has large chunks of lobster and is almost always cooked evenly to perfection. Occassionally too dry, but really one of their best dishes. It's also a side dish but can easily be shared appetizer. Portion is fairly large. - Mussels - Possibly the best out East. Get it in a white wine sauce. There are a ton of them and the white bread they give you is great for any of the excess sauce. - Tuna - The seared tuna with jasmine/ginger rice is great. I get it a little less cooked than usual and with extra wasabi sauce. That sauce is awesomely spicy. It's a HUGE portion, so I'd reccomend splitting it as a main with someone. LUNCH - French Toast - comes with apples and a ton of french toast. It's fluffy and delicious - Calamari - sweet chili sauce is really good. Sometimes they skimp on the calamari but not the sauce so it comes drenched and soggy, but most of the time it's really really good. - Harry Salad - also a dinner item. Don't let the term 'salad' deceive you, it's pretty much everything you would want in a salad minus the lettuce. Shrimp (good), bacon (good), green beans/onions/tomatos (good). DESSERTS - almost always too full for dessert, but the banana split is pretty legit. STAFF / ATMOSPHERE - everyone is incredibly friendly and the atmosphere is lively, with a wait well after 10pm on weekends - they should switch up the ted asnis artwork though. overpriced and really just not that good. read more

Love to eat on the outdoor patio and catch end of the day rays. OMG. Best. Food. Ever. Melt in your mouth seafood and steaks. Don't get me started on the BV potatoes or the lobster mac and cheese. Out-of-this-world onions strings. Hugest chunks of crab ever noted in a completely crumb-free crab cake. All previously noted dishes with perfectly crisp outsides, creamy (or tender) perfection insides. Body in shock from pure, rich deliciousness of everything. No food needed for at least 24 hours post visit. Downside -- we were nearly deaf by the time we left. Hugely noisy. Each table getting progressively louder as diners had trouble hearing each other. There was a point at which we simply stopped trying to converse as we were yelling across the table. We bagged the idea of having dessert and espresso and got the heck outta there. Wait staff couldn't keep up with the number of diners and nearly ground to a halt. Terrible experience, and really poor management. Table of 2, around 2pm on a Wednesday, with only 3 other tables seated. Once we placed our appetizer and main course order with the server, he left to go on break and said the other server would take care of us. She (the other server) never came over to the table once. There was no shared plates with our appetizers, we ate lobster tail cocktail off tiny bread plates. I had to go to the bar and ask for new silverware for our entree. We were never offered fresh pepper, no one checked to make sure our entrees came out ok, no one came by to ask us about another round of drinks. We sat there and watched the server chat with the manager about her social life. After having empty plates and empty drinks for 10 minutes, the female manager walked past our table three times with no acknowledgment. I asked for a manager and explained the disappointing experience. The manager blamed the server for dropping the ball, and apologized. The manager offered to pick up our drinks, only after I ordered a new one and asked for the check. The manager then addressed the lack of service with the server, not even 10 feet in front of us, where we watched the server stare at us the entire conversation. The manager then, dropped off the check, apologized again and said "the server saw you both eating and figured you had everything, and she didn't want to interrupt you." The mere fact a manager would even relay that pathetic excuse to guests is disgraceful. I would never eat at this location or a Bobby Vans. read more

Porting a Manhattan restaurant to the Hamptons usually goes about as well as Napoleon's 1812 Russian campaign -- you clean up in the summer but lose your shirt once the weather turns. Bobby Vans was here before anything happened in Bridgehampton after dark and, with apologies to Carl Yastrzemski, has done more to put this tiny stretch of 27 on the map than anyone. BV's is a hardcore steakhouse as in NYC, but it has a more relaxed feel out here that is more in tune with the surroundings. Whether dining outside, in the dining room or at the boisterous bar, this place takes some of the formal airs out of the high end steakhouse. In addition to steaks, there are always some good seafood specials on the menu. I'm a big fan of the spicy rare tuna, and I'm never disappointed with the raw shellfish offerings. This is one of the few hybrid draws in the area -- i.e, locals and summer folks both frequent the place. I think this is a tribute to the staff, as they've toned down much of the pretentiousness that afflicts the East End dining scene, as well as the fact that this restaurant's sheer tenure diverts the scenesters who thrive on it. This also supports them year-round. Tip: Portions are huge, so you can easily share an entree and an app or two. read more

Worst martini in the hamptons and served with an attitude at $18.00. so the bartender drops 3 large olives in a small martini glass and I said that takes up a lot of volume and he says so. I ask how am I suppose to get to the olives without a straw, he says finish the drink and you can get them. So he drops a red straw in my drink but not one for my wife who is drinking the same drink. When i voiced my displeasure he just says that's the way I make them and that most people don't eat the olives, there mostly for flavor. I said really and for the people that do are we suppose to stick our fingers into the drink and fish them out, Come on!!! Gimme a break. I'm paying for the Vodka and there wasn't much in there. I just went here for the first time on a Thurs eve. It was pretty crowded when we arrived at 10:30, but they sat us within 5 minutes. I wouldn't call the place dressy per se, but a guy would probably feel more comfortable in a collared shirt. We ordered the porterhouse for 2 which ended up feeding 3, along with 1/2 a dozen oysters, fries, and onion rings. The oysters were pretty average, but everything else was stellar. The steak came out a perfect medium rare, which my friend had stressed if it was medium, it would be sent back. Even though the service was attentive, we def felt rushed. At 11:30 the place was still 1/2 full, and our waiter was asking if we wanted more drinks when we were not close to being done the ones we had on hand. I used to work in restaurants, and it was always about letting the custys feel welcomed and relaxed. The bar tenders at Bobby Vans were outright rude and made us feel like they were doing us a favor when they served us. This happened on two separate days with two different bar tenders. The food however was great and therefore I would go back for the food and not sit at the bar. I certainly hope the owners will take the time to train their bar tenders to be polite and have respect for their customers who are spending good money at their restaurant. read more

Decent food. Nothing special at all. Calamari was nothing great- too greasy and rather blah. The salad- decent enough but nothing special. Same with the sandwiches. Okay for a nice lunch and they do have a lot more variety/choices than I thought they would for this non-meat eater.
