Have not been there in years.........know the joint very well from when the original owner Bobby was located across the street to it's present location in Bridgehampton.. Was a hang out for literary and artist types together with locals. A wonderful mix. Food was ok, nothing special. Hung out with Vonnegut, Joseph Heller, Capote, media types, local building contractors, a wild mix an anthropologist would have fun with. You will get a decent meal there but that's not the reason to go. It's clubby...........if you rent for the season, own a house there, are local, or visit but know people, you will mix and have a great time. If your an extrovert with none of the above qualifications you will also do fine.........if not.........no reason to go there. I spent part of Memorial Day Weekend in the Hamptons. We drove to Long Island. and decided to have an early dinner at Bobby Van's. The fish was very good and the salads and bread were fresh. Service was also good. The only issue we had is that I think they were overly busy or maybe overbooked their reservations. So we had to wait close to 30 minutes for our reserved table. After being seated, the waitress was also very busy and the food came out of the kitchen a bit later than we would have liked. But all in all the restaurant was very good and enjoyable. I would definitely go there again, but probably during a less busy hour. read more

Was OK at best. Not Sparks, PL's, or Keens, so don't look for a similar experience. The BH location can do well with fewer tables, look like they are trying to over maximize their margins. Staff, somewhat like robots, no personality and somewhat disconnected. Wine list was a little disappointing, however would be hard to really enjoy a good bottle of wine in the over crowded dining room, so a few Martini's is completely acceptable. My wife and I ordered our drinks straight and when served found the bartender had added vermouth or used an unclean shaker. We told our waiter who confirmed with us that he ordered the drinks straight with the bartender and not with vermouth. He said he would replace the drinks but came back a few minutes later and said the bartender refused to remake the drinks. When we asked to speak to a manager we were told the bartender was a part owner! We of course left and ate across the street. read more

I debated since Saturday night on whether or not to write this review..we visit this BV location maybe twice a year, usually offseason & usually love it..food is normally good, service great, & ambiance fun, lively...Everything was so off last Saturday..We arrived at 8 & were seated ....bread, oil, & water was served....then it went downhill..Our waiter did not appear to take a drink order for at least 20minutes...i like to sip my martini and look at the menu...he finally comes to take the drink order but then needs to recite the specials which were quite extensive...another wait....martini arrives and he disappears again..its not like he was tending to other tables...he was gone..we order..Brussels sprout salads, ny strip, & chicken...Appy was good...entree, chicken..like rubber and my steak was MR instead of rare & tasted like it had been floating in the Sous Vide for at least a week...it was sour...i know i should have sent it back but I didn't want to create a scene especially since all 3 of the deuce tables were now discussing the service.. read more

Walked out of World Pie after being ignored on a slow Tuesday afternoon, and walked into Bobby Van's across the street. What an 180! The hostess greeted me and offered several choices to sit, even though they were busy. The waitress appeared immediately, and my soup was delivered in minutes. Homemade and luscious on a brisk Fall day, chicken vegetable with the best seasonings! The crab and avocado salad, delivered in equally great timing, along with the Pinot Grigio made me feel like I had died and gone to heaven! Finishing my meal with a wonderful cappucino, and a brief, but friendly conversation with the hostess, referring to my experience across the street, we both agreed it worked out for the best to be ignored at World Pie and then to be treated so royally at Bobby Van's. My husband and I spent $200 on a holiday luncheon with our two teenage sons. Service was good. The Oyster Rockefeller tasted like it was from Applebee's. Having eaten at Antoine's in New Orleans where this dished originated I was very disapointed in this dish. The 'green' in Oyster Rockefeller is watercress and herbs not spinach! Furthermore,there is never cheese served on top! Pernod,butter and herbs and oysters. At $15.00 for this appetiser I expected much more. We also order the surf and turf springroll which was a big,greasy eggroll that was awful. Our meals were okay. My teenager got out of his seat to ask the waiter for a plain cheeseburger without tomatoes,pickles and onions on it and his plate came with it on it. I just had the worst meal I ever had in a high end restaurant. It started with a Caesar salad which had wilted lettuce and tasteless dressing. Then came the so called prime rib. It was "Prime Rib Night." We ordered medium rare and got lukewarm, well done meat which was tasteless. The cheesecake was delicious,Probably not made in house. Went to Bobby Vans for lunch today and had a not so pleasant experience. The reason I am giving it 2 stars is for its location, and outdoor sitting area and the fact that we were able to take our dog to lunch. Other than that. The service was awful and the food, beyond lower than average. I've had a completely different experience compared to dinner. Our server would forget to bring what we asked for the table. He certainly wasn't in the weeds. So if he couldn't handle the lunch shift, he certainly can't handle the dinner shifts. For starters, we split the Harry salad. The shrimp tasted very commercial. Not impressed. We asked for bread for the table 3 times. 2x to the waiter, once to the busboy. All 3 times were forgotten. Our food came out. Their sirloin was actually not bad. But I got a cheese burger that was supposed to be cooked medium. It was severely uncooked inside. I waited for the server who never came. I had to get up out of my seat to find the manager. She claims she was the front desk manager, but truly unprofessional and didn't act like she was one. I wouldn't be surprised if she were just the hostess and claimed to be one of the managers, because if the general manager were to hear of our experience, I am certain he would have made it up for our lack of service and inedible food. I ended up not eating lunch, as I was starving and when they came out with the cheeseburger for the second time after putting it under heat, it was still raw. The woman asked if I wanted another go at it that she wouldn't be putting it on the bill. I declined. I would hope she wasn't putting it on the bill after all that I had to go through. Everyone was done with lunch before I got my cheeseburger for the second time. Terrible. I ended up going to citarellas and grabbing lunch to go there. Would have much rather citarellas over having to experience what I did today. The manager charged us for all but the burger of course and didn't even send over coffee or dessert. Okay, so we're in the Hamptons and we want to have a nice meal. Bobby Vans was recommended by a friend who lives in the Hamptons and also got great reviews on yelp, so we figured it would be our nice night out. The bread they bring to the table is wonderful, chewy, soft, crispy, very nice. I got the filet mignon and my wife a fish cooked in saffron sauce. My filet was just okay, the outside was burnt and the ends a bit dry for my tastes. Of course, my comparison is the Capital Grille in DC, which served a melt-in-your-mouth, juicy, succulent filet mignon. Needless to say, Bobby Vans fell short, way short. My wife's fish in saffron sauce was pretty good, it had an interesting blend of spices and ingredients. But because Bobby Vans calls itself a steakhouse, I have to base my review on the steak and it was subpar, hence the 2-star rating. I can't comment on dessert because we were not impressed with the main courses, so we didn't stick around for dessert. But the dessert list didn't really appeal to us anyway, nothing creative or interesting. Just the typical apple pie with vanilla ice cream, flourless chocolate cake, etc. For $120, we got 2 entrees and a glass of wine (Malbec, very good). For those prices, I would have expected a better culinary experience. A restaurant charging those prices should at least consistently produce high-quality food (and by food, I mean steak) and I feel like I got the bad apple of the bunch. BOBBY VAN'S NEEDS TO BE SCHOOLED ON SERVICE/ATTITUDE AND TEACHER JUST ARRIVED. GET RID OF THE HOSTESS/MANAGER UP FRONT WITH THE BITCHY ATTITUDE who needs to draw THE RED LINE about EVERYTHING. Let me start by saying that I've LIVED in The Hamptons for almost 17 years and I'm a fan of Bobby Van's and have been for years. The food is great but lately, the SERVICE has been suffering. It's one thing to flub an order but TREATING FOLKS LIKE CHILDREN because it's Prix Fixe night is uncalled for as well as upsetting. We dine here all Summer and deal with the crowds and the poor service because the food is great. You can't find a better Steak out here along with a choice of wine. This past Tuesday, we decided to eat at BVs and were surprise to learn they had a fixed menu throughout the week THAT INCLUDED ribeye. We went for it, a great deal at $27. On top of that we ordered a bottle of wine but I'm getting ahead of myself. The crabby hostess (long black hair, in her late 50s) met us at the door and shoved us into a corner table by the bar. We didn't mind, we didn't have reservations. All went really well with our waitress but when it came to dessert, we were given the TINIEST piece of pie we'd ever seen. We realized it was limited menu but this was ridiculous. We asked the waitress for larger pieces since they were literally the size of a macaroon. She brought it to the BITCHY hostess/manager who decided to try and humiliate us into eating them after she had practically breathed all over it and touched it. We had to DRAW THE RED LINE with her and outright laughed as she continued to convince us that there was nothing wrong with it. At that point we pulled the "We're resident's and eat here at least once a week" card and at that point she went back to get us a decent sized piece. WHAT A SHAME THAT WE HAD TO GO THROUGH ALL THAT JUST TO BE SATISFIED CUSTOMERS. How much could that pie really cost them? In the end, we'll eat at BVs again; no doubt. Food is fantastic and so is the scene. BOTTOM LINE? DON'T count on your past reputation and those days when folks in The Hamptons didn't have a dining choice. With so many NEW and HIPPER PLACES OPENING up every Summer, it's just a matter of time before folks move on, if you continue to treat your LOYAL customers this way. I know I will. read more

Wait staff never stopped back at table to ask how the meal was, only stopped to ask if we wished to purchase another glass of wine. Disappointing . A special salad of shaved Brussels sprouts , radicchio and a few other ingredients was very skimpy on the Brussels despite an $18 price tag . We have been going to Bobby Van's every year for my my boyfriend's birthday and have always thoroughly enjoyed the food and experience. However, we went there for lunch yesterday and were treated so rudely we will never be dining there again!! I ordered a glass of wine with my appetizer (which was delicious) and then I ordered a second glass with my entree (also delicious). However, after drinking a few sips of the second glass of wine, it didn't taste right. We were going to order dessert and I wanted another glass of wine with my dessert. So my boyfriend told the waitress that I was not happy with my wine. (We never usually complain). As I was walking to the ladies room I overheard the bartender tell the waitress that we just wanted a free drink! When I return to my table, the waitress is holding the 1/2 glass of wine I had just returned and tells me, "The bartender said it was from the same bottle as the first glass, so he won't give you a new glass. But you can finish the glass you didn't like and we won't charge you for it." I was nonplussed! Was I supposed to enjoy the glass of wine that I didn't like 2 minutes ago now because I wasn't paying for it? When I told my boyfriend the bartender said we were only complaining because we wanted a free drink, he walked over to the bartender and questioned him. The bartender was unapologetic and extremely rude to him. Needless to say we left without dessert! Horrible birthday meal. Why wouldn't the bartender just open a new bottle or offer an alternative? I had strolled up to the door where two waiters were standing there talking. As i approached they starterted to walk into the dining room, mind you they saw me walk up with my dog, so common sense tells me I want to sit outside. I asked if dogs were allowed one of the waiters said yes then the other started to say no and then I simply asked if my Boxer was allowed, he said yes but it was difficult for him, why I have no idea. I ordered the Lobster Cocktail. which was basically whole Maine lobster minus the body. This came with a piece of lemon you would normally find in a drink and the cocktail sauce was a stainless steel bullet. (people who ever worked in a rest. will know that for others its a soufflé cup. Not enough. Then I ordered off the Prix Fix menu. I chose the soup which was Chicken Curry. Now when it comes to soup we all like to see a lot of the guts, well this soup had it by far. I think the chicken comes from left overs of the roasted chicken on the menu. I get it " Food Cost". The soup had a light flavor of curry however what I didn't like was the dish water color, kind of a turn off. I ten had the Broiled Rib Eye ordered med rare, slightly over cooked, however it had good flavor. When a steak has good flavor then masking it with a sauce is just a travesty. Will I go back probably but it will be a while before I do and I'm sure when I do this review will come to mind. read more

This place is not good. It's one of those places people come to for the NAME and not because the food is really great. That's cool, i get it. But just know in advance. The lobster bisque isn't bisque. It's very dark, no cream I don't think. It's a soup broth that tastes like a LOT of Old Bay seasoning in water. There were a few small pieces of actual lobster though. I took one taste and sent it back. It was soooo salty and honestly only tasted like Old Bay. Blech. We also got the bbq beef short ribs sliders. They were decent. Lots of meat. But just bbq meat and rolls. Nothing fun or different. Then we got the mini kobe burgers ordered med (because i'm pregnant). They arrived raw. Not rare, raw. We sent them back of course and they returned to us (the same burger i had taken a bite out of) no more than 60 seconds later cooked Well done. I'm sure they were in the microwave. They were bland. Anyway, The server took the soup off the check which was nice. But for 2 mediocre apps, and 4 glasses of house wine, we paid $80. Unreal. Don't waste your time or money. read more

Best place in town!!! A staple in The Hamptons. I go there once per week, and if I don't, I get Bobby Vans Bridgehampton withdrawl. It is a great scene. Kristen at the door greets everyone with a huge smile & engaging demeanor, she is sharp, "on-it" & the BEST in The Hamptons. It takes a lot to coordinate the scheduling and management of a top restaurant and she does not miss a beat! James makes sure everything is perfect and that all of his guests are having the best experience. The service is superior across the entire staff. It is obvious that owner Joe Phair is a reason this place sparkles and shines as he is always working hard to make sure this well oiled machine is moving, while handing out hellos and warm smiles to his loyal and new customers. Customers love going back because they feel at home and the food is PHENOMENAL... I have been eating there for 20+ years and have never had a bad dish or even a below average meal, all of their dishes are outstanding, fresh and deliciously flavored... the steak, fish, appetizers, etc. are unbeatable. You will not find a better meal around. Zack & Robert are true professional waiters as well as the entire team. The bar is always hopping and has a great buzz with smiles and energy (they make a perfect dirty martini!!!). Great veal and ribeye steaks. Typical resort-ish restaurant ambiance, a bit hectic but ok. A bit old-school vibe. Service was alright but the steaks we ordered were superb. Busy place in summer. Would recommend if you crave for meat amid the vacation in East Hampton. Parking can be a challenge, but you can easily find a spot in the neighborhood. With their numerous NYC locations, who knew this was the original? But I digress. Its pretty much a prime steakhouse in the Hamptons. "Relaxed atmosphere" is not really what I'd call it since it can get insanely busy and noisy in here. "Casual upscale" is the better way to put it along with a healthy dash of "boisterous". Good bar scene. The food is solid. I haven't had anything here I didn't like - from steak to fish to salads to shellfish, etc. Its all good. Service is professional and attentive, no complaints there. The reason this doesn't get five stars is twofold: First when I say it can get busy in here I mean BUSY. Not uncommon during the summer to encounter wall to wall people at the bar and every single table filled (and they can be close together in many places). Second, the host/hostess desk isn't run as well as it should be. For example, when I walk in for a 5PM reservation with my family on Sunday at 4:55 and the place is empty, don't make me stand there until 5PM like you did last Sunday and give me some stupid speech about how Sunday dinner starts at 5PM like I did something wrong by showing up on time. But that's being picky of me. Overall, you will enjoy being part of "the scene" in the Hamptons at one of its culinary institutions. read more

Where should I start? If you're into mediocrity -go to Bobby Vans. Went in for lunch myself and another couple- celebrating my birthday... ordered two burgers and two French dips- I ordered my burger medium and it came out bloody raw. I had to flag the busboy to get a hold of our incompetent waiter (who was MIA for the majority of the meal and who never bothered to check in after he dropped the food-serving 101 people) I sent it back and it took at least 15 minutes for them to return the very same burger, on the same bun, same plate with cold fries no less. By that time everyone else had already finished eating. Not only was the burger not deducted from the check, when we asked to split the bill between two cards each party was charged for the full amount of the bill. When I called Bobby Vans about having the wrong charges removed-I questioned ANDREA about the level of service as it pertained to my situation such as a gesture in the form of a free dessert, glass of wine or simply the removal of the burger from the bill, she replied "that's not our policy." Well Andrea, I guess mediocre and sub-par service IS your policy. No wonder they thrive in airports- they don't have to worry about follow up clientele. read more

Save your money and go elsewhere! My husband and i went there last night for our anniversary dinner. We ordered porterhouse steak medium. The steak arrived raw, I mean purple inside, not even red. When we sent it back we were told that the chef said "if we order the same steak, it would arrive the same way". What kind of BS is this? We patiently chose a different cut hoping for better results but the next steak (sirloin) arrived so rare that only the outside was edible. We spoke several times to a very nice hostess who understood but seemed caught in the middle. I have been to Bobby Van's twice.....both times when we ordered they were out of the item and when asked to select another they were out of that also......I was not there on busy days, these were not exceptional selections they were sandwiches.......The last visit we sat down, thinking we were going to have a meal ordered drinks and then found they were out of everything we wanted....paid over $20 for drinks and no meal.....went elsewhere and will not return as this is no way to run a restaurant. read more

Very disappointed! The bartender was great, the hostess very helpful. It all ended once we sat. The waiter seemed uninterested. The beet salad with burrata was pre-made with wilted greens. Our appetizers appeared within seconds of ordering...a big indicator that everything is sitting around waiting. YUCK. Never got a water glass refilled, never was asked for another cocktail, never was asked how the meal was. The filet mignon was delicious, the side dishes were horrible, to the point that the hash browns were sent back. (someone must have dropped the salt container in them). DO NOT EAT HERE! I've been coming to the Hamptons for years but had never tried the famous Bobby Van's that I pass each time I drive out. We (party of 3) decided to give it a try. BIG MISTAKE. After being seated promptly we waited about 15 minutes for our server who only arrived after one of us got up and went to the host stand and complained. We had waited so long...now going on 20 minutes that we gave our entire order drinks and all on the first visit. The menu looked good despite the steaks being over $50. We all ordered cocktails, a first course and fish for our main. The overall food quality is POOR, served at room temperature with no flavor. The caesar salad is basically the same as the $1.99 slop you would get at a airport Applebee's except at Bobby Van's it's 16x the price. Before we could even finish our tiny first course a waiter from the kitchen shows up with our 3 mains. They just sat it all on the table while we finished but not before holding an auction asking us who ordered what. By now we were used to this kind of service because they did the same thing with our drinks and our first course. We each remarked that the food was cold and had no flavor. We asked our waiter for more bread that only showed up after flagging down the busboy. Our water glasses remained empty the entire dinner. I was unable to finish my salmon because it was cold, fishy and undercooked. The only time we saw our waiter from the time our order was taken was when he dropped the $237 check. As we left I shared my feedback with the hostess and what seemed like the manager. They were insensitive and uninterested offering a cool "sorry" followed by what seemed like a eye-roll. I was so embarrassed since I suggested this place to my friends. Long story short, if you're hungry after a long drive from NYC and looking for dinner, stop at the McDonald's in Manorville for quality meats and service with a smile! read more
