This was my first time at the Hoagy Steaks here in Hayward. I've been to the Fremont location many times. This is a very different restaurant than the other. The Hayward location is very plain and small. I always order the same BBQ hoagie with American cheese and onion and fries. The BBQ hoagie was great as always but the fries were way overcooked. The service is fine.. not much to the service, you order when you walk in and just find a seat wherever. You can get your own drink from the fridge and pay at the counter when your done. Im a Hayward Native and this spot has never disappointed. I've seen the same family run this place for hella years and I'm so glad to support a local family business, I don't even get bothered when they charge for extra refills because I get it, they aren't big ass corporations like McDonalds, IHop, and thus have to do what they can. And also that goes for the decorations/Atmosphere, it's simple and reminds me of the many spots like this in the bay. Growing up with a low income family background my family couldn't afford shit like Olive Garden or Friday's so we had to go to places that don't hella decorate but make it seem like you're coming into a home. I grew up in South Hayward, and recently moved back to the area. The first place I had to go back to is this place. If you look past the liqour store next door, the drug deals in the parking lot, and the handful of shady looking people loitering around, you'll quickly discover that this place serves great hoagy steaks. Bob's makes my favorite cheese steak! My family and I have been coming here for years and their sandwiches are consistently good. The bread holds up to the cheesy yumminess inside. Their portions are generous and I usually save half for later. It comes with steak fries and a pickle for under $7. No other cheese steak compares. I usually take my food to go, but if you're dining in, Bob's is a hole in the wall. It could use some renovation and tidying up but I think the food outweighs these flaws. This place is a fall back place for a Friday's night dinner beating the wait list. Its quick, and filling! Minus: Gross green carpeted floors, old 70's wall wood paneling, cases and cases of drinks right at the entry way, old not watered plants, and desperately needed new or "cleaner" tables and chairs. Within this entire little plaza, hands down I'd take this over the new remodeled Burger King, Chinese food, and Dominos. They've got about 5 different variations of their cheese steak sandwich, served with steak fries and a pickle - I usually get the mushroom cheese steak. The sandwiches are a good size (about 7-inches long) cut into halves and they do not skimp on the meat like other places often do so it'll definitely fill you up! Very, very thankful this place has made it into my life. First time coming here was after the SF Giants Parade and the homies & I ended up back in Hayward to drop some things off. My homeboy frequents this place & assured us we wouldn't be disappointed. Found this place on Yelp, stopped in here one weeknight and got everything to-go. We got a mushroom cheesesteak and a green pepper cheesesteak. They were both tasty, and I actually liked the steak fries (usually I hate fries to-go, they dont stay crispy enough). There was so much food, we ate it all, and I was completely stuffed with greasy deliciousness. It was definitely greasy and heavy, but that's exactly what I was craving. Since I'm usually a "let's make veggie stir-fry or salads every weeknight" type of girl, I love my junk food when I get my hands on it. I LOVE CHEESESTEAKS. There's a similar location in Fremont that I also recommend, but this one is conveniently placed on my commute home. The mushroom cheese steak is my go-to when I'm craving. I recommend getting the regular size (instead of the small) for ~1-1.50 more. You get the second half of the cheesesteak, just save it for later if you can't finish it. An order comes with steak fries and a pickle. The parking lot can get full if you come around dinner time (it's a small shared parking lot in a complex with many other little stores), so look out for that. Also, they charge for card transactions, so you may want to bring cash. The couple the owns the place is super nice and friendly. We went here for dinner last night because we passed by it the other night and I got curious. I of course made a Yelp-browse to find out what other people were saying about the place. There were a bunch of weird experiences and reactions which was why I wanted to find out for myself why. So here's my side of the review: Starting from five stars, let me deduct the following: (1) My fiancé and I took our orders to go, and when we got home to eat it, the cheese steak meat was dry. Most of the cheese steaks that I've had in the past had juicy shredded meat, but this one had dry ground meat. It totally looked over-cooked. (2) When we arrived at the place, there was nobody inside. There was also no food being cooked on the grill. We thought we got lucky because there was no long line or whatsoever. We ordered and sat to wait. After a few minutes, the Asian owners arrived followed by an African American customer who obviously knew the owners since they started chatting by the counter. It was so unfair when I noticed that the African American customer got his orders first and left. We were there before him! Maybe that's the reason why our meat was dry and over-cooked because it sat on the grill ignored. That was totally rude. (3) They do accept plastic, but they never told me that they will charge me $0.55 for using it. That was a total deduction for me. You might want to bring cash if you visit this place. I wouldn't call the location sketchy as most of the Yelpers have said. It's just a very small old strip mall. I just don't understand why people judge others by just their physical looks. Yes, there were people who go in and out of this plaza but they're not necessarily doing sketchy stuff. It's a busy strip mall with a decent Chinese restaurant, a Taqueria, Domino's Pizza, Burger King, a tanning and nail salon, a donut shop and a liquor store. If you act like you're in Hollywood, why don't you live in Hollywood and not call a part of the East Bay sketchy. I live in the East Bay, I can go anywhere in the East Bay and even go visit Hollywood without saying it is sketchy. Just because people wear Walmart clothes and not Armanis, it doesn't make them sketchy. I'd probably go back to this Hoagy Steak place probably because I have cash... you know what I mean. read more

My girlfriend's house is less than 5 min away and we come here often. We always call in ahead to do a phone order so its ready to go when we pick it up. Usually it takes anywhere from 10-15min for pickup. The cheese steaks are very good, I get the regular and my girlfriend gets the mushroom cheese steak. The bread is full of flavor and grease from the steak and the fries are perfectly crisp. And they include a very snappy pickle on the side which soaks into the fries a bit and the fries tend to have a sour taste which I love. Most cheese steak joints are expensive but this place wont hurt your wallet too bad. The sandwich combos run around 6-8 bucks a combo depending on which one you pick. Make sure you bring cash or debit card, they don't accept credit cards there. Be careful in the parking lot because the liquor store tends to bring in some troubled people that can be mischievous. read more

Had a craving for Cheese Steaks and been passing this location for several years and decided that today would be the day I would stop in and get a Cheese Steak Sandwich. Hoagy Steaks Bobs is located in the corner of a strip mall off of Mission and Industrial. You have to look carefully because you'll miss it unless you're looking for it. It's a small little dumpy dinner. A true "hole in the wall" kind of place. The menu's are on laminated 8.5 x 14 piece of paper. They only offer basic sandwiches, hamburgers, and it looked like about 6 - 7 different types of cheesesteaks with a choice of regular or mini. Prices here are ok. Nothing here is over $10 and the mini cheesesteaks start $5.50 (mini) and go up to about $8. I put in an order for a mini cheesesteak with mushrooms. I sat at the counter and watched them make it on this large grill. It took about 5 minutes and they put it in a box with plenty of fries. I got to my lunching spot and dug in. The cheesesteak was pretty good. Meat was nicely diced and tender and plenty of peppers, mushrooms, and melted cheese on it. I was disappointed that a mini is only 3 inches yet I paid $6+ for it. The fries were total disappointment. They were your Costco steak fries. Very bland and need seasoning to. Too bad I got a lot of fries instead of a lot of sandwich for $6+. So as to the rating, if my fries were better, this place would rate better. But blah Costco steak fries don't sit too well with me. Also even though the sandwich was good, I ended up paying like $7+ (including tip). Not much of a bargain where most places for $7 you will get a 6 inch cheesesteak, fries, and drink for the same amount of money. But the cheesesteak was good and since it's close to both work and home will stop by sometime in the future if just looking to get a cheesesteak and go, otherwise, it's not at the top of my list and will look for other options where there is more value and better fries. 3 Stars and just average for Hoagy Steaks Bobs. read more

My husband introduced me to this place a little while back. He told me him and his buddies would come here all the time during high school and college. The steak fries are great- they make them fresh when you order so they're always hot and fresh. Nice and thick. The potato salad is regular cubed potatoes and the mayo dressing- pertty basic, something from Costco... kinda sweet. meh. Now- for the sandwiches. I always get a mushroom and meat sandwich and I add green bell pepper. It is really, really good. Jam packed with meat and veggies...and cheese... a real dripper and totally juicy. The roll is nice and stays intact while eating. My sis gets the spicy one.. peppers with more peppers.. she loves it and says she'll order it each time. They're generous with the meat.
